Unfortunately I've never been to their downtown location and yes I've tried luckily they are a regular at the Honolulu Farmers Market at the Blaisdell Concert Hall lawn every Wednesday 4pm-7pm which you're instantly able to see right off South King Street and parking is completely free so it's a easy choice to support these local small biz here. Giving my favorite places the once weekly love the gloomy weather has me craving something hot and comforting and decided on The Pig and the lady as they do have Pho and there wasn't any line which was quite unheard of so I took it as a sign and opportunity to finally give them a try. Their setup is quite nice with a bowl of what each dish consists of and with detailed description of each dish is going beyond to answer any questions or confusion anyone may have and decided on "Pho Ga" and "Tofu Banh Mi" for mom, you're given a number and pick up is on a designated table so you're able to grab utensils and napkins is a really great convenience though I do advise for you to bring your own bag as their giant brown bag was a struggle to carry. Everything was packed perfectly with the noodles was packed separate from the soup which was covered in plastic wrap making it secure is a very appreciated touch for the ride home and I was so excited and hungry after a long work week. The first thing I had try is the soup...woah! At first it was wasp of herb and flavor beyond anything I've had and I wasn't sure at first though once I was about to add the noodles I was horrified the amount of onions and green onions it was topped with knowing it was in there didn't think it would be that much and yes it's a personal thing I shouldn't asked to omit that lol! Once I was ready to go I was in complete love with it all and how the noodles had a great bite and didn't fall apart on me it had a bit of texture that picks up the yummy fragrant broth that I was in complete heaven. Mom enjoyed her sandwich it was filled with so much veggies and the tofu was more like aburage and you have a choice to go with or without mayo I decided to go without as everything on the sammie was perfect just way it is. Love the brick and mortar store but came to the farmers market to try the pho French dip and did not disappoint! I had the beef short ribs plate and my husband had the oxtail soup. They gave ample food. The oxtail soup was loaded with several pieces. I'm not sure what type of rice I got but it was a little too mushy for me. The flavor of the beef was on the bland side but still good. You could taste the beef flavor. If you eat there, they have a small table area, and they help make a spot for you if it's crowded. Was at Blaisdell yesterday for vaccination so I thought I'd pick up dinner to go at the farmer's market (and since I don't usually come here). I've heard many good things abt TP&TL. Been meaning to try but I didn't want to wait in line in Chinatown and the KCC farmers market booth was always packed. I guess one positive of COVID and social distancing is everyone like me who don't like to wait in line or squeeze with strangers get to try these usually busy stalls. The first thing I noticed was the potent and delicious scent of the pho broth. I didn't want to risk spilling soup during the drive home though. They had a lot of options to choose from so we settled on brisket curry and pork belly banh mi. The food was tasty but we weren't wowed by it like so many other reviews. The brisket curry came with one medium-sized piece of brisket propped up by giant chunks of potato and carrot. It was very tender though. The curry was dense in flavor. The pork belly seasoning is almost lemongrass-y which I enjoy and I really liked the pickled carrots and daikon and cucumber and cilantro but not the fatty belly bits. You're probably wondering why I got the pork belly if I don't like fatty bits. Coz it was for the hubs haha I stole a bite to taste! Maybe we didn't order the right items. They're a tad pricey too (average $15) but I'm happy to support local businesses, esp at these back-breaking and exhausting pop up events. I remember trying pig and the lady for my 18th birthday, and getting excited to come back after I could start drinking. Unfortunately, no bar at this farmer's market pop up, but the food was as good as I recall. I tried the bún thang after seeing it on their instagram. After maybe 15 minutes it was ready and I tried it at home (I accidentally poured some of my brother's pro broth in before I poured the correct one so take this with a grain of salt). THis was a very refreshing dish with light flavors. The soup was a little sweet, with a kind of citrusy and shrimp aftertaste, kind of like a sweeter yuzu shio ramen. There were thin strips of chicken, ham, and egg and a few vegetables as well. The noodles were thin and soaked up the broth. The flavors were very comforting and familiar, and were great on a windy night. This got me hooked to coming to this farmers market. A few weeks later I got the brisket curry. I've never been a fan of Vietnaese food. The combination of seasonings that they use just don't turn me on. But then The Pig and the Lady came along and turned my life upside down. Well, sort of. I still won't walk into a Vietnamese restaurant, but, I will eat at The Pig and the Lady at the Farmers Markets. Their food is predominantly Vietnamese but they put their personal touches on every dish they make, thereby giving Vietnamese food a whole new meaning. My most favorite offering of theirs is the Le Banh Me French Dip w/pho au jus. It's almost as long as a 12 inch Subway sandwich, and it's so good that it's hard not to eat the whole thing in one sitting (although I like to eat half at the market and save the second half for the next day's lunch). They toast the bread onsite, so it's very crispy and light. A definite winner and I hope they keep it on the menu as a regular item. For dessert, their toast with homemade coconut dulce de leche is divine. I could eat it everyday for the rest of my life. What!? I'm like 100% sure I've written a Pig and the Lady review, but I guess I'll write another. It's been a go-to spot for a few years now. I've seen changes from the pre fixe menu, to the addition of seasonal pastas and drinks. And most importantly, I've loved and have always come back for the weekly soft serve flavors. Each week, pig and the lady features two soft serve flavors, so once the week is up, they'll move on to a different pair. I've tried so many, but my favorites have to be the fruit flavors. I recently had the mango and omg. Amazing. You can get a huge swirl of soft serve in a bowl for $7 or get a sundae for $9. They also have other amazing desserts if soft serve isn't your thang. I prefer coming to pig and the lady for lunch, as the lunch menu offers sandwiches and pho. For dinner, the dishes are a bit more fancy and a bit more expensive, and I prefer the more simple dishes anyway. The Laotian fried chicken is 3 perfectly fried wings with this amazing sauce. They used to have duck fat rice, but I recently just ordered the Latino chicken with a side of white jasmine rice and it was still perfect. I'd suggest you scroll through their IG for seasonal items, as the menu is kind of small and it changes frequently. It's a great place to have dinner with friends or people from out of town. I've definitely taken most of my out of town friends to pig and the lady. It does get a little noisy, so idk if it would be a great first date place, but hey, the food is good. I would also recommend making a reservation! I'm a fan of vietnamese food, and their food is ok, but different from other restaurants I've been to: Pandan Claypot Chicken - 3 stars - My younger son actually wanted this because it looked good, but he could not eat it because for $9.50, the chicken was very soft, and they added drumsticks for him, but we didn't know that there's a kick of chili pepper taste that slightly permeated in our mouth. A good size portion, but the rice and chicken didn't have as much taste as I was expecting like other vietnamese restaurants. I didn't care for the pickled vegetables either. It was a little too strong in flavor to me. Stuffed Tofu - 3 stars - For $5 I got a bowl of 2 stuffed tofu with rice. It was supposed to come with pickled vegetable, but they forgot to add that in when I opened the bowl to eat , and it was too late to tell them since I was not at the market anymore, so I missed out on that. The stuffed tofu was different, but the sauce tasted like a basic tomato sauce instead of with spices. There was a long line for this vendor, and people had to wait 10 - 20 minutes for their order. They knew I was in a rush, so they were really nice to rush my order by the time I had to leave, but I think because they rushed my order, they forgot my pickled vegetables. The girl working the front was amazing and super helpful. She thoroughly explained the specials and shared what she recommended. She was right on! I split both the Pho French Dip (best seller) and the chicken salad and I wish I didn't because I wanted it all to myself! Not only are the workers professional, friendly and clean... They also set up tables for customers to dine with napkins, utensils and condiments. Amazing touch! Especially knowing the quality of the food, they don't have to do all that because people will come regardless if they have to sit in the grass. When we asked how we clean/pick up after ourselves the worker said they would take care of it. Restaurant type service on a lawn in the great outdoors. LOVE! I had the Dry Noodle Bowl (basically Vietnamese bun) with grilled chicken, which is served with your choice of meat (other choices were lemongrass tofu or lemongrass meatball) with cabbage salad, mint, Thai basil, cilantro, house pickles, vermicelli noodles, and fish sauce vinaigrette. I've never been to the actually restaurant in downtown but in the past I've always seen a lot of people gathered around The Pig and The Lady at farmer's markets and etc. I gotta say I stumbled upon the pho here one day after work and it is fantastic! Fresh flavorful herbs and spices, big portions, lotsa fresh sliced and marinated meat, convenient take out packaging to make sure the food stays put till you get home to eat it, hot steamy hearty brothy soup (none of that watered down instant stuff), noodles with bite texture and not all overcooked nor mushy. The pho is so delicious that I try to stop by every Wednesday when they set up at the Farmer's Market at the Neal Blaisdell Center. Sometimes I literally makes my whole day knowing I get to buy pho after work lol. Shhhh... don't judge my lifestyle. After trying the pho here I don't think I can ever look at pho the same way again. This is my new gold standard right here. It is pricier compared to say a bowl of pho from Chinatown or the instant kind from the store but you're gonna enjoy the high quality here. The experience of yummy goodness. None of that blah any kind whatever stuff. And they also have different items besides varieties of pho like sandwiches/ banh mi, dry noodle bowls, rolls, vegetarian, etc. I've yet to try those yet but I'm sure I wouldn't be disappointed. My pho broth was EXTREMELY salty. I personally love pho, it's my favorite! The pho was $15, I don't mind spending money on food, but the portion was literally child size like 3 bites and it was gone! Were in the middle of a pandemic the the guy packing the food was short, big guy with curly hair was constantly touching his face, moving his mask, only had ONE glove on and was touching the trash bags, and just basically contaminating everything!! There were at least 5 guys and 1 girl taking the customers orders and they all just kicked backed and moved soo slow! Disgusting customer service, and AWFUL AWFUL taste in workers! Please train your workers the basics of personal hygiene and proper food handling procedures! People could get sick with that kind of service! I LOVE THIS PLACE. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner and man, oh man. It is rare to go to a restaurant and enjoy every single thing you order, but this place was a total success with stellar food, service, and ambiance! The wait staff here was very friendly and knowledgeable about their menu. I forgot our waiters name, but he made some recommendations and they were all a hit. He also mentioned that the menu changes seasonally, so if you really like a dish, make sure to get it before it's gone. We started off with three appetizers (because 2 people need 3 appetizers, right?). The LFC wings were amazingly crispy, just as fried chicken wings should be. Great flavor. Definitely not your average wing. Even the coleslaw garnish was tasty (we ate it lol). We also had the Weekend @ Burmese Salad which was a fancy green papaya salad with dreamy green tea dressing. It was so fresh and healthy. All the toppings really complimented each other and worked in harmony to make a superb tasty dish. Our last appetizer was a citrusy Konbu Cured Hawaiian Kanpachi. The presentation was beautiful (if you're looking at pictures, it's the one with the grapefruit). The taste was ginger and grapefruit with thick slices of fish. Sooooooo delicious that I wanted to slurp up the dressing that was left on the plate. On to the entrees. My boyfriend ordered the Whole Moi fish and it was garnished with dill and mashed cucumber. The flavor was light and soft with earthy tones from the lemongrass. The fish was cooked perfectly. It basically melted in your mouth. But the true star was the Smoked Pork Jowl that I ordered (and my boyfriend envied). It was SO flavorful. Everything on the plate from the pickled clementines to the cooked spinach gently hidden underneath the thick cuts of pork worked together to create a flavor explosion that made every sense smile. It was very filling and had a killer presentation on this oblong triangular shaped plate. I left The Pig and the Lady with one regret: not ordering the Peanut Butter and Banana Cream Pie. But it was for the best. Someone please forward a photo so I can pretend to eat it later. I got the lemongrass tofu banh mi with pho dip. I really liked the crunchy bread with with the tofu and pickled veggies, it was all kinds of flavors and textures. The pho broth was a really nice compliment, I tasted tamarind and maybe pineapple?? The Vietnamese French dip is a cool concept and it was delish. I also got the Farmer's Market curry which I didn't like at all. I liked that they used the veggies from the market, but too bad the curry was so bland. I got it with noodles and I think it was a somen type noodle but it just didn't go with the curry, it wasn't a strong enough noodle or it was over cooked. I didn't want to take the curry home and my friend didn't want it, so we ended up throwing it away, there goes $13. I was expecting a bit more. They have a lot of choices but I opted for the Laotian chicken banh mi. It was flavorful but not much different than what you get at other Vietnamese/pho eateries that serve such sandwiches. I noticed the bread was really crunchy here. I guess because they serve it with the pho broth kind of as a spin on French dip, and if the bread was any softer it would be soggy when dipping it into the broth. I still prefer the bread at BaLe (specifically the Mililani location) where it is warm and crispy on the outside but really soft when you bite into it. My friend also ordered a noodle dish that had a slight curry taste. It wasn't that great, and we didn't finish it. We didn't even opt to take it home either since we both agreed that we probably wouldn't eat the leftovers. It had a real "earthy" taste almost like something you'd get at an eccentric health food store. It also tasted like a low-sodium type of dish. This farmers markets location was more accessible than trying to get seats at Piggy Smalls, which we tried a few times. We could have gotten seats one time but didn't want to wait an hour and a half. I never tried to eat at Pig & The Lady in Chinatown, but I'm sure it would be just as difficult to get seats. To sum, it was just okay. Came in for lunch and had a spicy noodle dish (can't remember the name of it), it contained crab and it was incredible. I was disappointed that I had to crack the crab arm, but it was well worth it. The dish was more like a stir fry noodle dish. To drink I had the horchata and it was very tasty and refreshing. Not your typical horchata it taste if milk rice and cinnamon was very fresh. I was so excited to visit The Pig and the Lady, and had made reservations weeks in advance. I was rather disappointed by the slow service and the quality of my entree, however, as well as a couple hiccups with the bussers. Our server was funny and knowledgeable, but every time we had our water glasses refilled they dripped water onto the table, in our drinks, or on our plates. Not a huge thing, but a minor observation that is easy to correct - just take your time a little bit when refilling peoples' glasses. Please. We ordered the truffle agnolotti as an appetizer to split, as well as the wonton soup. The dumplings were exquisite, with a delicious filling which wasn't too rich, as well as perfectly cooked noodle. After we finished our apps, we started to wait. And wait. The poor timing of our entree definitely contributed to our dissatisfaction. Finally, once the pork chop arrived, it was RIDDLED with fat and gristle. I know pork is a fatty meat, but if I'm paying $35 for an entree I should NOT be throwing away half of the meat because it's just unrendered pork fat. Still, the dish was delicious, even though I could only consume half. Well, I'll tell you I'm definitely no lady ;o) The Pig and the Lady...sometimes a pop-up, sometimes a caterer, most times the most popular booth at a local Farmer's Market, 100% of the time downright delicious. I've visited The Pig and the Lady more than several times now, and each time I am really surprised by the "twists" that they put on common Vietnamese favorites such as the bahn mi, and pho. They use fresh, often times local ingredients which of course puts them over the top in my book. Don't ask me to repeat the names of my fave dishes, I can't even pronounce them when reading the signs, but some of my faves are anything with pork belly, the pork wrapped in beetlenut leaves, the pho - with pork belly of course, and the pandan malasada which I only ever saw once, but PLEASE oh PLEASE Andrew, if you are reading this, PRETTY PLEASE make it again!! Pure heaven! The other thing that amazes me is that no matter where it is, how busy it is, how long the crazy line is (and more often than not the lines are crazy, all waiting for their culinary greatness) Andrew Le always has a smile on his face and is always so friendly and seems sincerely appreciative that people are enjoying his food. Another check for pig and the lady!! I have journeyed to kcc farmers market for their pop up booth, and their Chinatown main restaurant location. They are usually stationed at the Honolulu market on Wednesdays, in the back of the Neil bleisdail center. I was supposed to buy some veggies, but my feet and stomach brought be to their section;) I love their French pho dip, but I decided to be adventurous and try their "Pho Ga." It's a noodle soup of their mamas classic pho. Ingredients such as free ranged poached chicken, soft poached egg, aromatic herbs, chicken cracklings, and hand cut rice noodles were beautifully used. It was a nice breezy Wednesday afternoon in December. I sat down on one of their tables that they provide for hungry customers like me. I waited a few minutes before they brought a generous portion of my pho ga. They dressed a good amount of veggies and bean sprouts on top. I eagerly grabbed a few pieces of the pickled chilies in the jar, and with my fork, spoon, and chopsticks in hand, I was ready to eat! Ohhhhh that first bite was delightful. The squeeze of the lemon into the soup made the broth even more delicious! A taste of sour, spicy, and soft chicken welcomed my palate. The poached egg was perfect, and oozed out into the soup with a poke of my fork. The chicken cracklings gave a nice crispy exterior while swimming in the broth. I don't eat much noodles, but these are out of this world in my opinion. Every component complimented each other very well. I have to say Bravo to the chefs that created this! This is by far one of my favorite eateries to get food at the Honolulu Farmer's Market. While there are many places to eat at this farmer's market, I still come back again and again after trying other places. What I love is how the flavors are complex and that there are so many different ingredients used. The food is made fresh on the spot and they have a whole kitchen and kitchen staff dedicated to making all of the food. The menu is extensive with lots of different options and choices. My favorites are the Farmer's Curry (a curry made with fresh veggies from the farmer's market), any banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich), and any pho (rice noodle soup). The Pig and the Lady has a couple of tables with many chairs and it is all open-air seating. If all of the seating is full you can have a picnic if you bring a towel or blanket. There are really only rare instances where I'd knowingly subject myself to battling traffic during rush hour in the Ward area to go and wait in a long line for food out on a lawn. Lol! When it comes to The Pig and The Lady, I'd do it pretty often if I could. The pho french dip doesn't come close to any of the other Vietnamese places I've tried. My husband says, it's the only place that doesn't shave the meat so thin and isn't hesitant to throw a quarter inch brisket in a sandwich. It's no joke!!! It's meaty and delicious. Yum. Yum. Yum. Yum. The bread is today and crunchy on the outside, but soft on the inside. The veggies are fresh and tasty and there's a generous portion of it in every bite. The brisket is so soft and juicy. The fat is sinful and while some may eat it without a second thought, I had to close my eyes. But, it was worth it. The service is excellent. They do it all...under a tent and on the lawn. Had the pho French dip ($14) and it was pretty tasty. I like the phostrami at piggy smalls more but this was pretty good. S/o had the brisket pho ($14) which the s/o said was ok. S/o would've preferred to have all the sprouts and greens that usually come with pho for a heartier meal. We both agreed our meals were at least $2 overpriced. read more
