Stopped by the Pig Rig after reading a few of the reviews. I ordered the 2 meat combo with Brisket, smoked chicken thighs, and Mac and cheese. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best overall. I was fairly disappointed with everything but the brisket! That was the star of the meal!!! But the Mac could've used some work ( reminded me of boxed Kraft macaroni) and the chicken thighs had smoke but no flavor. If the brisket stays the same, I ll definitely go back! But a lot of the items need a little more love. read more

Couldn't even remember that I had visited this place a few years back just around the time they were getting started. Only real difference I noticed was the indoor dining room, I think they were remodeling or constructing it the first time I was in. Got the 3 Meat combo that only came with 1 side. They only have baby backs. They only had chopped brisket. Grabbed a half smoked chicken. Food came out Extra Fast! Don't really know if that's a good or bad thing. Technically all this stuff should be already cooked so there really isn't a good reason why BBQ food should ever take more than 3 minutes to put on a plate. But at the same time ... microwaves could be a factor. Ribs were slathered which is always a no no in my book. But Very good flavor of meat and sauce and rub. very tender and moist, and good amount of meat on the bones. Rub was actually Excellent. Hit all of the 4 S's - Smokey-Spicy-Salty-and Sweat equally. Picture kinda makes it look like it's still raw but that's just how smoked and juicy the meat was. Smoked chicken was really good too. Leg and thigh and breast. Awesome chicken rub that again hit all the 4 S's. Tender and juicy. Brisket is chopped and I've never liked it that way or ever will. Meat flavor and texture was pretty good though. Lot of fat lumps in there that didn't melt or produce any great flavor. And it was just sitting in a giant pool of gross Mac and Cheese as the 1 side with the combo. Velveta cheese with some bacon bits in there. Not the worst I've ever had. Cowboy beans. different from Diesel beans which is on the menu and I'm pretty sure it's just the cowboy beans with some tabasco sauce or something. Anyways, cowboy beans was pretty much a Sweet and Spicy Chili is how I would describe it. Much more beefy shavings in the mix than there were beans. Stewed tomatoes and peppers, it was actually really good tasting. I would get it again ... I just can't call it a bean dish. Had a choice of bread. Cornbread or a Sweetbread. I was really intrigued by the sweetbread but I had to go with the cornbread just to compare it to other cornbreads I've had. Should have just got the extra sweetbread. I feel like sweetbread is offered as the regular bread somewhere in the BBQ belt but this is the first time I'm hearing about it. Well ... cornbread was what I call yellow cake with some corn flavoring. They have an extensive array of dessert pies and thingies. Grabbed a slice of lemon cake and a snicker pie slice. Pretty good way to wrap up a meal. Nothing crazy, but can't really go wrong. read more

Originally, I was going to have one of the sandwiches. However after seeing they had burnt ends available and hearing good reviews from the customers inside, I decide to go for that meal. After about 10 minutes, it came in a to go container. For $18 with an extra fee for a drink, I got 6 big burnt ends, smooked mac and cheese, and cornbread. The cornbread was cornbread and was good. The Mac and cheese was homemade, but wasn't as smoked as I thought it would be. It was still good however, and was worth buying as a side. The burnt ends were a surprise. I had never had them to my memory, and they were very good. They were juicy and tender. The sauce was also a great BBQ sauce and really added flavor to the meat. I would come back for the BBQ instantly, though I am curious how good the other items that are always avaliable stack up in comparison to the limited supply Burnt Ends. read more

When I walked in I had a feeling I found some real BBQ, let's start with the ONLY 2 negatives. The chicken was dry and they use too much BBQ sauce on everything, maybe light the sauce and let me add my own. The ribs were cooked perfectly and the diesel beans were different, the smoked Mac and cheese was out of this world with all the flavor! So, you order at the front and go sit at a table and they'll bring your food. I like that sometimes especially if your coming in for a quick meal. The menu is great, so many options I was conflicted on. My bf ordered a brisket horseradish sandwich which he really enjoyed, his side choice was mac and cheese and it was smoky and had some meat in it. He just didn't like the cornbread but he was pleased with everything else. For my meal I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with a potato salad side. They gave me chicken by accident and I was impressed that they quickly corrected their mistake. My pulled pork was very good and the potato salad was fresh and had good flavor. I got sweet potato bread for a side and it was really good and different. I like the variety of bbq sauces, they even have jerk sauce that I put on my sandwich. We would def return. I used to visit Pig Rig when they were just a food truck in a parking lot! For a while now theyve been a full fledged restaurant in Wallingford. Nestles in the corner of a strip mall their food is top notch. I do not purposely seek out Veteran owned businesses, but Im glad I found this one, and it IS worth mentioning. Still continuing to serve the community, just in a different way. Still just as important!!!!!! The owner is also not shy about supporting and working with local first responders, another commendable trait, thank you! Over the years Inhave had just about everything on the menu, and Ive yet to find anything I don't thoroughly enjoy. Of course I have my favorites. The Diesel Beans are awesome. Amazing baked beans miced with Hummels hot dogs. Lots of flavor and meat in the beans. A great BBQ flavor and the flavor is outstanding. The Smoke Mac and Cheese has pulled pork mixed in with it. With or without the pulled pork this mac and cheese is down right awesome. From Pig Rig I expect nothing less. The Horse Power sandwich is my all time go-to. A perfectly soft roll, topped with bbq brisket and horseradish sauce. Great sandwich. Great. Sandwich. The rest of the menu is spot on for great bbq. The ribs, pulled pork, smoked chicken, all excellent and special shout out to their Sweet Potato Loaves. Different combos are available or you can go al la carte as well. There's a reason why Pig Rig is often considered one of the best BBQ place in Connecticut, especially when looking at average Yelp reviews. If you base what you get on price, portion size, and taste alone it really holds its own against the better known Bears BBQ farther north. What makes Pig Rig special to me is that excitement that a small family business and "hidden gem" can give you when you've uncovered a restaurant like this, but without the ridiculous prices that are needed to keep a businesses like that afloat! So lets get down to it. The burnt ends are something you should ask for right away as these will go out of stock if you come on a busy day. The ribs really do fall off the bone, the brisket has just the right amount of moisture while not being greasy, and all the sides (especially the mac and cheese) are top notch. The only item this reviewer cannot comment on is the chicken, so don't hold me accountable! But how does Pig Rig really distinguish itself? Pretty simple actually, you don't need sauce on anything for it to taste amazing. Sure, they have sauces that sit in large squirt bottles on the side, but only add to the fun and aren't the VIPs (last I counted, at least 5 unique BBQ sauces not including standard hot sauce, ketchup, etc.). My only complaint, is I can't get enough of mixing the sauces myself and now that Pig Rig has a larger seating area, I have to walk around more to find out who has my favorite bottles! read more

We stopped in on a whim looking for pulled pork sandwiches and found them to be a delightful experience. There was so much meat between the two slices of bun with some BBQ sauce on it. I would like to have had more sauce because of my swallowing issues. However, another surprise was the bun which was not a typical hamburger bun. Rather disappointing visit to Pig Rig tonight. Dinning with a friend, we both ordered two 1/2 rack dinners with cowboy beans and cornbread. The cowboy beans were as I have tasted in the past, but the serving on what looked like a hotdog "plate" seemed a smaller portion. The supposed star of the meal were the ribs. On opening the stryrofoam container, they were individually cut into separate ribs, as they should be. However the baby back ribs were like eating cardboard. Completely Devoid of any moisture, they had the texture and chewed like leather. Having eaten here since they opened this location moving from the food truck on the south side of Wallingford/Route 5, these ribs ruined my recollections from past visits. $40 down the drain and looking for a new " reliable" bbq. read more

Its not even close to the best. But barbeque is barbeque and this place does it pretty good. I got the three piece smoked chicken one time and the full rack of ribs the next time. If you've never experienced a barbecue you won't be dissapointed. Everything was tender. Warm. High quality and tasty. The ribs were fatty with no stringy hard bits. The chicken was meting in my mouth. Their BBQ sauce is smoky salty sweet and satisfying. Their sides are wonderful. The mac and cheese with pulled pork was smooth and enjoyable. And the cornbread was crumbly goodness. The only reason it gets a 4 is because the BBQ market is extremely competitive and any southern BBQ would probably beat this place. But for this price.
