Sadly, the current rating is not reflective of new owners. While friendly, the food was mediocre. It was clear my half bbq chicken was reheated from the day before. The ribs were okay. Their coleslaw was very fresh. The restaurant is tired and old... sometimes great if the bbq raged as a 5 star. One of my measures of restaurants is the bathroom - didn't meet might standard if cleanliness but it was ok. I was excited for great bbq based on the reviews and rating. Run down sad place. The ribs are what you'd get if you made baked ribs at home and slathered with an overly sweet "glaze". These had zero evidence of smoke like any decent BBQ place would serve. The chicken nuggets are all white meat, real chunks of chicken breast, no dark meat and certainly not chopped and processed food supply nuggets. The seasoning on the chicken nuggets is flavorful and tastes great, unlike any flavor that you can get anywhere else. The nuggets are cooked to perfection and moist, not dry. The mashed potatoes and gravy are always piping hot, so you need to remove the lid to let them cool off. The potatoes taste like instant potatoes and not homemade but are good. Fries are cooked to perfection, and the pickled beets with onions are my favorite, they have just the right amount of vinegar and are so tasty. It is a casual place to eat, I see most people pick up take out. You order at the counter and they have about 8-10 booths in an adjoining room and they will bring your food in to you on a tray. read more

Such a solid place to get fried chicken! Super simple fried chicken to-go joint that we have here. I was only able to try their fried chicken as well, it's what they're known for and now I know why! It's so good! Crispy, tender and juicy with no excess grease. It's not the most unique or special fried chicken but it's very comforting, simple and no surprise type fried chicken. I'm saying this in a good way. They were very quick with my order, the staff was also very friendly. This place is litterally a hole in the wall towards the end of a not so busy and small plaza. We've lived in Southington for over 2 years and just recently tried the Hen House a few weeks ago. My husband got a regular fried chicken sandwich. I got the mild Buffalo fried chicken sandwich. It was very mild but tasty. Next time I'll try something just a tad more spicy. I thought the fries were decent (and we ordered take out so everything wasn't piping hot as if we dined in). Having moved to Florida almost four years ago I must strongly disagree. Take the chicken nugget dinner for example. Lightly seasoned and breaded, these delicious morsels of mouth-watering juicy chicken breast seem to jump off the plate and into your mouth. Where'd they all go? In my belly will be the answer. :) Numerous rotisserie spits don the back wall of this establishment, slow-roasting whole chickens and ribs to savory perfection. Whether your a poultry or pork fan, this place will put a few pounds on you for sure. The place is dirty & small & the staff's attitude was less than helpful; the cook worked with a cell phone in his hand. Fried chicken breasts were hard as a rock with way too much dry coating. So I bookmarked this spot and finally got around to trying it out this weekend. Let me just say this is not the best looking place outside or inside. The staff was friendly and patient and asked if I had any questions on the menu. I ultimately decided on the two piece wing and breast fried chicken meal to go. After placing my order I sat on the dining side and waited for my meal to be done. After about 10 minutes my food was ready and I headed home. As soon as I was settled, I dug in. I found the chicken to be very moist, and fried very well but lacking in flavor. I've heard so much great things about this place and expected to be WOWED and I wasn't. Friendly people behind the counter. My first time in so they let me look at the menu without hurrying me along. The chicken nugget meal was incredible--in both portion size and tastiness/quality. This was really genuinely some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. It was moist, well seasoned, and fun. The atmosphere at this place is really weird, I watched an old lady play pac-man for like 40 minutes and she was doing really well. It was a little run down (not in a fun way), but I think if you're just looking for really good fried chicken, this is it It didn't look like the rest of the food was great, but I didn't try any so I can't honestly speak to that. Came here for my first time over a year ago because my boyfriend raved about this place because he's been going there since he was a kid and they have delicious, homestyle BBQ, are pretty inexpensive but also loved & well-known in the neighborhood. Upon entering we were greeted by the person manning the register and everyone in the back cooking and preparing meals looked like they were having a blast. This definitely gives off a "family owned and run" kind of vibe. I love that. We ended up sharing a pretty generous order of chicken nugget and french fries along with almost every kind of dipping sauce under the sun. I LOVE me some dipping sauces and each chicken nugget was juicy, tender white meat and deliciously battered. It was evident about my 3rd or 4th nugget in that these were not frozen and deep fried, but most likely hand-battered in their kitchen. Each of us ordered our own side to go along with this feast - the boy ordered mashed potatoes and I ordered mac and cheese, we shared the dinner bun that came with. My mac n' cheese was delicious, nothing insanely amazing to call home about, but it was much better than KFC or fast food places - kind of on the level of Boston Market's mac n' cheese, maybe better. His mashed potatoes were also quite yummy and had some nice potato chunks in there making me wonder if this was instant or not and erring on it not being. Cool beans. To boot, Hen House has a super old Ms. Pac Man machine in the back of their dining area - the kind of machine that you have to sit down on a chair to play and kind of resembles a table. I love those kind of machines more so than the arcade-style ones that you stand at. Four words of advice: GET IT TO GO because the food is wonderful, but if you dine in (at least on a Saturday when I did) the service is sloooooooooooooow. Everything is made fresh to order so when you fry chicken without a pressure cooker that takes a while. We ordered a fried chicken plate and a seafood plate and it took 35 minutes to get the food, It took 25 minutes to get 2 cups with ice. Both our meals were very tasty and satisfying. The "kids" (I'm old enough to be everyone's father who works there) know what they are doing & are very friendly -- the girl at the counter let me try one her chicken nuggets (also very good). Only complaint was the french fries were a bit cold by the time I got home, but I'm not exactly around the block either. It's hard to find good fried chicken places like the Hen House here in Connecticut. The only alternative are places like Popeye's or KFC, and the Hen House is certainly head & shoulders above them. read more

Fries were cold and hard, ribs couldn't be pulled apart even with utensils, overcooked and tough, the grilled cheese had one slice of cheese, the chicken sandwich was tough and came complete with a hair in it, and the wings were soggy and tasted like general Tsao chicken with ketchup mixed in the sauce. Oh and the $1 cornbread, 1-1/4" x 2" x 1/2" thick sponge full of oil. My son took me here and first impression, a hole in the wall with the ordering portion was Arisona hot. You see deep fryer back to back. The young lady which took our order was kind and funny. She knew it was my first time there. So, we ordered 20 wings and 8 rotisserie ribs and a small order of French fries. After the order my son walked through this door and it transform from Arizona to falls in CT. The chicken wings and fries was to die so for. But what blew me and my son away was the pork ribs. My family dined in on Sunday afternoon and had a very pleasant experience. The entire staff was very friendly and attentive. Understand when you go in that the food is going to entail a wait time. It is all served fresh, which accounts for the time. I am happy to say it is worth the wait. A few minor gripes: the coleslaw & potato salad were not so good. We would not order them again. Additionally the ventilation was not so good - you will leave smelling like the restaurant. Hopefully these can be fixed, but they will not stop us from returning. Ahhhh! The Henhouse Bar-B-Q...... To quote my buddy, the Photobomber, "This frikkin' chikkin' is lip likkin' good!" Or, to quote my dear Yelp friend Tonya J., "You've been Hen Pecked!". She's right! I really like the fried chicken here. Every time I come here, I exclaim that this is my favorite fried chicken. That is, until the next time I go to Greers Chicken in Bristol. They're both my favorites. I really can't decide which I like better. Tough dilemma, ain't it, having two really great fried chicken restaurants nearby? The fried chicken here has a mildly seasoned coating, and are large pieces, always perfectly cooked to a delicious golden brown, and served with a large number of optional side orders. French fries, onion rings, potato or macaroni salad, and cole slaw are all very good options to go with your chicken, ribs or fried seafood. Oh! Did I forget to mention that Henhouse also offers fish & chips, fried shrimp, and fried clams? All worthy of mention, in case your tastes run to seafood. Sort of "Chicken Of The Sea", I suppose. In addition, Henhouse also offers rotisserie roasted chicken, and barbeque ribs, things that Greers does not offer. I've yet to try those here, at Henhouse. I've heard they're very good. Maybe one of these visits soon. There are several booths in the plain, but clean dining area connected to the room where you walk up to the counter to place your order. They'll bring your food to the table when it's ready. Or you can get yours "to go". I think that's what most of their many customers do. There's often quite a wait, because the take out is so popular. I'll continue my internal debate about which fried chicken place is my favorite, but I think anyone would be well served to try Henhouse for any of their offerings. I have read about this place in the paper and finally got a chance to stop by and try i out some of the fried chicken - glad I did - it was the BEST. While I was there I ordered some of the ribs as well - glad I did - they were excellent. It is part of s strip mall, maybe not the fanciest place and it might be ore take out than sit down - but the counter staff was super friendly, chicken cooked to order and it is going to a regular stop when I want to have good, very good, fried chicken and as good as any ribs I have had in this area. read more

Maybe the cook was having an off day, maybe it was because we got takeout or maybe it was just bad karma, but our recent meal was not quite as good as anticipated. I stopped by to order our meals and was told it would be 15-20 minutes. I returned in 15 and our food was just being packaged. 8 minutes later we sat down to 2 orders of fried chicken - #2 white = 2 chicken breasts and #2 dark = a leg and thigh. The coating was a tad darker and less crispy than on my prior visit and the chicken was drier. Each order included a small container of ground up coleslaw, an abundance of previously frozen French fries and an unneeded dinner roll.
