Best egg biscuits ever!!! Their biscuits are so light and fluffy. I could eat them every single day!

During a vacation trip, we got off to an early start with breakfast at Mama's Boy cafe at The Falls. A counter-service venue, the food was typical breakfast fare that came out very quickly. The signature hot sauce on the table was nothing to get excited about, but the service was quick, friendly and constant throughout our visit. The cafe was bright, clean and wide open. I had breakfast yesterday with several friends at Mama's Boy and it was a pleasant enough experience. I'd give it a solid 3-stars. While I enjoyed it overall, I feel like there are opportunities to improve the customer experience. I will elaborate. First, the ordering and paying experience is a little awkward and difficult if you're with a group. The process is that the first person orders but doesn't pay. Instead, they step to the side and the next person orders, but also doesn't pay. Then when you get to the last member of your group they can both order and pay. Once everyone has order, you need to each go back to the register to pay. This seems very odd and redundant. I've been to plenty of counter service restaurants with friends but this is the only spot I've come across with this methodology. We had four members in our party and after finally ordering and paying we all commented on how peculiar this was. Second, there seemed to be no specific staff watching the dinning section for the purposes of refilling drinks, removing dishes or whatever else needed to be done. I had to wait quite a long time for my first refill of water. And then when I needed a second refill I finally got fed up of waiting and simply poured it myself. I feel like there are multiple solutions to this issue. The one I would suggest is simply make water, coffee, drinks, self serve. Personally, I am more than happy to get my own drink and not have to worry about waiting on my server. On the plus side, the food was great. I loved the peach French Toast. I also felt like the portions and prices were very reasonable. I'd say it was a positive experience with room for improvement. I'd visit again. read more

I've been a longtime fan of the original Mama's Boy in Athens, so I had to check out The Falls location--and wow, this one really impressed me! It's newer, roomier, and has a more polished, modern feel while still keeping that Southern charm. What I Loved: * The Peach French Toast was absolutely delicious--sweet, comforting, and full of flavor. It totally lived up to the Mama's Boy reputation. * The Strawberry Lemonade was so good, and yes, free refills! Major win. * The new space is beautifully done. Clean, comfortable, and feels more upscale compared to the original, but still welcoming. It's always a good sign when a place expands and still keeps the quality and heart. Let me start by saying the food was delicious & I would be back for that if I'm ever in the area. I had heard for years this is THE breakfast spot to hit in Athens. We also recommend trying the jam on the table for your biscuit! The service was just a little weird. We got there when it opened so there were only a few customers around. They let one of our friends order separate & then forced two of us to order together even though all of us were paying separately. They did let us split the bill the way we wanted to but for counter service this seemed strange & forced one of our friends to feel as though she had to rush her order. Then one of our friends was brought out the wrong meal, which they ultimately fixed - but being some of the first customers of the day seemed odd. After an eventful weekend, my girlfriend and I decided to rest and replenish. Our first stop was mama's boy. Upon walking in, the place was busy and lively. This is a counter service restaurant, so you order your food at front and they proceed to give you a number where you sit yourself. They'll bring you drinks, appetizers, and food. It's a crew of people working together to serve you and the service can be hit or miss if you need something extra. (My guess is they tip share here) The coffee was pretty mid, nothing out of the ordinary. The banana bread was warm and delicious it made me happy dance. It was one thick slice which is okay for $5. The goat cheese plate was yummy and very generous with the pita. The pepper sausage bowl was good and very filling. The company biscuit was flavorful and the salmon cake was tasty in it. Wow, has this place fallen off recently. Came for a mid morning breakfast with great anticipation, as they have always been good in the past. Found a nearly deserted place, with ordering at the counter as the only option. The attendant was pleasant enough, but I blanched at the request for a tip. Sorry, but if I have to stand at a counter to order, I don't tip, which I reserve for good service. Ordered a side of sausage gravy for my biscuit, and received a side of sausage patties instead. When they corrected this error, they brought me a stingy half full serving of lukewarm gravy instead - definitely not worth the $3.49 surcharge. All the food tasted fine, but the serving amounts clearly are victims of shrinkflation. Bill came to $21.03. I am not impressed. Left feeling sadly disappointed. Not sure if I would return. At least the downtown Athens location has some atmosphere. I may try that one again, hopefully with a better experience. read more

I came to Mama's Boy with high hopes after it received praise from my friends and hundreds of 5-star reviews online. Unfortunately, the moment I walked in, things felt off. You order (and tip!) at the front counter before sitting down. Reading the menu while feeling rushed from the line growing behind me made me unsure if I ordered the right dish. I felt like I was in a fast-food drive-thru, not a cozy brunch spot. Once the food arrived, the service vanished. No check-ins, and no refills for my increasingly empty water glass. I suspect pre-tipping removes any incentive for attentive service. The food itself tastes delicious, but the portions are so tiny it's hard to enjoy it. My plate had two tiny strips of bacon, an egg, and French toast that disappeared in an instant--basically a snack for someone who just finished a juice cleanse. I ended up leaving hungrier than when I arrived. I didn't feel like I got value for what I paid for, and therefore can't recommend Mama's Boy. If they change the ordering structure and serve satisfying portions, then maybe I'll come back. It's been a while (years, actually) since I dined at Mama's Boy at the Falls, but we were in the area, so hubby, our adult son, and I dined there recently. The facility is very spacious, especially in comparison to the "mother ship" over on Oconee Street. Parking is plentiful, and there is a nifty patio for outdoor dining. The interior has a lot fewer tables than it did before (a good thing!) although there's not much to deaden sound, so it seemed kinda noisy even half empty. The model is now fast casual, with some menus in a box if one is unfamiliar with it. I'd reviewed it online, so it didn't take long to put in the order. By the time we picked a table and got seated, coffee and water were served. Not long after, we got our meals. Hubby and son both got some sort of biscuit sandwich, and they were hungry, so I didn't get a picture of theirs, but I grabbed my phone and took one prior to digging in. I got the very first item on the breakfast menu, which is a couple of eggs, plus protein, side item, and bread. This was a lot of food! I thought mine to be very flavorful, but I had just had one of those darned "fasting" medical appointments, so maybe I was just really hungry. The coffee was good and refills were brought in a timely manner. While I am not a huge fan of fast casual, this was a very good visit. All my Athens friends have HIGHLY recommended Mama's Boy, so I was excited to finally try it out! There was about a 30 minute wait for my friend and I on a Sunday morning but it went by relatively quickly and they let us look at menus while we waited for the text letting us know we could be seated. Inside, you order and pay first at the counter and then are seated. There's plenty of space. I ordered the Salmon Cakes Benedict and also a half order of the Georgia Peach French Toast. Both dishes were absolutely delicious! The eggs were poached perfectly and the french toast was the perfect amount of sweet to finish my brunch. Food: 3/5 Disappointed in the daily special -eggs dry and biscuit recipe they use is not an example of southern biscuits (known for being light and layered). These biscuits are square-cut from a pan and are heavy bread. Fruited salad was small. Peach French toast -not fresh peaches. Service 4/5 Blake had a big job but did it well. Megan also worked at making breakfast a positive experience Unfortunately no coffee refills for whole meal breakfast, even tho price is around $3.75 per cup with "free refills" per the menu. Recent clearing allows views of a small falls over a short dam in the creek behind the restaurant. Love love love this place! Such an iconic Athens restaurant, so glad it survived the pandemic. I prefer the Falls location because of an abundance of parking options. Plus a cool view of the waterfall is never bad. Due to short staffing the group had to order at the kiosk (they had a weird way of taking everyone's order first and then lining up again to pay ) but once we got to the table everything was brought to us. All the food was delicious, the flavors were well balanced and the wait staff was very courteous and took very good care of us! Cheers to many more years Mama's Boy! Having eaten at the original Mama's Boy several times, I was ready for some more delicious breakfast food when I came to the Falls location for the first time the other day. I was a bit disappointed that the host was outside the building and there was a 45 minute wait just to stand in another line on the inside and order from a person behind a counter, but what followed made up for that debacle entirely. I ordered the UGA sausage and grits bowl, with a small stack of chocolate chip pancakes on the side. The food arrived quickly, and the atmosphere was clean and organized, yet still homey and comfy. I dove into my pancakes while they were hot, and they were perfectly balanced between fluffy and rich. The chocolate chips were both inside the batter and put on top of the stack. Nothing life changing about these pancakes, but delicious, nonetheless. One of the staff members, Nick, took extra care to keep my coffee refilled (great coffee at that) and ensure the quality of myself and my friend's food. He made a great deal of an impact on our visit with his service and friendliness, and I probably would not be leaving this review had he not. My grits and sausage bowl was absolutely scrumptious. I think it is also really neat how they use sausage from the UGA Ag program; this really added some depth to the flavor I was getting from the hearty chunks of sausage. I am a big fan of grits, so the grits in this grits bowl were perfectly nourishing for me on this late summer morning. The "garlic aioli" that was slathered on top of my bowl, however, basically tasted like sriracha mayo from a drive through hibachi spot, and I will probably get it on the side next time. I definitely recommend coming and expecting a wait. We checked out a store nearby while we waited so it wasn't bad! Had an amazing brunch with some friends this past weekend. The entire table LOVED their food. Staff was super friendly and attentive. The seating is pretty open and you seat yourself. There wasn't really any ambiance music or anything, but the place is lively :) We had quite a spread and I definitely recommend the cinnamon bun and French toast! Mama's Boy was my favorite restaurant when I was a college student in Athens. During a trip back to Athens, I saw this new location and knew I had to stop by for brunch. Just like always, I loved their food! I ordered the bacon egg scrambler as I usually do, and my fiancé ordered one of the benedicts. Portion sizes were smaller than I remember them being. My scrambler didn't fill me up at all, but it was good. The biscuits tend to be a hit or miss. They make the most amazing biscuits and I love it with their jam. But sometimes they come out burnt. Today was a miss day. My biscuit was very hard and burnt- not the soft, fluffy biscuit I love so much from them. It was still good with lots of the jam though. The truck stop benedict was also good and very filling! It comes with two poached eggs on biscuits with fried chicken and sausage gravy. The poached eggs are always perfect here, and the biscuits with this dish was soft and cooked perfectly. I do wish that they were more consistent with their biscuits because it is one of the reasons I look forward to coming here. I also wish their portion sizes were bigger especially for the price. I have heard about this restaurant quite a bit And finally got a chance to try it. Parking is quite abundant at this location and it is not a paid lot. I walked in around 11 AM and there were not a lot of people. This changed almost 20 minutes in around lunch hour. You order at the front and pay immediately. I ordered the peach French toast, veggie tofu, and strawberry lemonade. First the peach French toast was quite delicious. The bread was very Fluffy yet dense and the peach compote on top with the candied pecans and fresh cream combined offered a delicious elevated taste. They also give maple syrup which I did not use Because the dish was already so sweet. I would recommend a half order if you are ordering something savory and extra cream if you are a fan of whipped cream. The tofu and vegetables We're quite average and I would not order them again. They were heavily salted and seasoned to be tasty but I would have gotten a more breakfast option here. I would suggest that the business replaces dish with some sort of tofu scramble that mimics eggs like other breakfast places. I received this with a side of a biscuit which was well-made and crispy on the outside. Butter and jam are available at the table. The strawberry lemonade was terrible. I would not order this again and opted to exchange this for an orange juice. Service was otherwise OK and because you order at the beginning it is a little hard to get your service attention. I didn't take advantage of it, but glance at a beautiful Eli Stef woodsy view area in my was to the bathroom. Scramble was delicious. Biscuit different, but very nice. Grits? Watery and not true cheese grits. They were grits that had some cheese sprinkled on. Raspberry jam, home made? Delightful. All in all, nice experience for a flash in the pan. Get out. The Georgia Peach French Toast I purchased was truly fabulous and is the best I've tasted. The food here is always solid and satisfying. I really like the truck stop Benedict: fried chicken with gravy over biscuits, topped with poached eggs. Super yummy! The peach French toast is also very good, and the salmon cake Benedict is a repeat favorite. The only thing I've had that was a little disappointing was the cinnamon roll. The outside got a little dried out and crusty, so I likely won't repeat that. But everything else I've had is great, and it's a great stop for out of town guests. read more

We went to Mamas Boy for lunch today with out of town friends and what a mistake. Usually we like the food, but it has gone down hill drastically and not worth the time or money. Very disappointed. Still have counter service, not a fan and it really brings the whole experience down. The staff was a mess, lots of folks waiting out in the heat with numerous open tables. I know they will blame short on staff, but could have seated them and told folks that it would still be a wait, but in the air is a much more of an attractive option. There appeared to be plenty of staff to handle the whole service. Management not thinking. Staff wasn't on it either. Had to ask for refills, napkins, silverware, etc. Dirty/sticky tables. Then there was the food, not worth it. Everything has gone down hill.. Food a 3 Cleanliness a 1 Service a 2 Service attire/dress and cleanliness 2 Management of customers a 2 Counter staff was good, but still recommend doing away with it and going back to table service. We won't be back anytime soon, recommend making some changes so people want to eat there and return. read more

I ordered THE FARM which is a FRIED CHICKEN, CHEDDAR CHEESE, OVER MEDIUM EGG, BACON & TOMATO BISCUIT. I also ordered their GEORGIA PEACH FRENCH TOAST (half order option) because again... Two favorite breakfast items, can't leave without trying them both. After I ordered the young lady asked me "is this your first time here?? Because those are our two most popular items!" They were both amazing and the biscuit didn't fall apart, which is a must for me. Parking here is not chaotic like the rest of Athens, and there was plenty of space with available tables to be able to relax over some good breakfast. You order your food when you first come in, you get a number and sit wherever you want, then you receive regular table service. Everyone was super friendly and the food was fresh and came out fairly quickly. Some friends and I took a day trip to Athens today. Before we went, I did my research online and asked some friends where they recommend for brunch, and Mama's Boy was at the top of every list. And um after eating here, I can clearly see why. We arrived at around 9am and there was a line, but we only had to wait around 20 mins before we were called up. They have this great system where you put down your name and party, then when they call you up, you place your order and pay before you even sit down! I liked this a lot because I think it makes it more efficient, and means you don't have to wait around at the end to pay, you can just leave once you're done with your meal. I'm not sure if this is a COVID thing or their usual operations, but I almost wish more businesses would adopt this model! Honest to god the best coffee and best biscuits I have EVER had in my life thus far!!! Not just in Georgia or in the South! The coffee is Jittery Joe's (my new favorite now) and the biscuits were huge and fluffy, and not at all dry! They have jam at the table that pairs beautifully with the biscuits, and it's not too sweet either. I ordered the tofu stir fry, which, if you order this too, don't be caught off guard like I was -- the tofu comes in cubes like a typical stir fry, not like a tofu scramble. I read it as "scramble" so that's why I was caught off guard lol. But still, it was tasty! Well seasoned (love me some nutritional yeast) and the vegetables (mushroom, broccoli) were so yum. The tofu cubes were nice and dense, so if you like that, you'll like this stir fry. In addition to what's on their menu, they have a display board out front that has their specials. Today's read black bean cakes and blueberry biscuit (which sounds ah-mazing, and our server said he would willingly get diabetes by eating it). They have a nice patio space that overlooks a creek of some sort; the one thing to be aware of is that there are a number of flies buzzing around, which may be because of the water? It was a bit of a nuisance and ruined the vibes only just a little bit, but they have fans running at full speed and a fly trap (that by the looks of it was very effective). This will be describing our 3 most recent experiences only at The Falls location on Macon Hwy. After this was previously one of the best breakfast locations around Athens, one that we often enjoyed and also recommended to others, the quality here has unfortunately fallen badly in recent times where we will no longer go back. Following our first negative experience here, we came back again two more times with friends with the hope that it had simply experienced a temporary glitch and would be back "to its old great self," but we unfortunately discovered that those same earlier negative findings now appear to be part of the normal experiences to be found. * Immediately after walking in the door, you, must grab a menu and then quickly place and pay for your order (including tip) while still waiting in line to be seated; * Service here was once stellar, but it is now hit-or-miss and mostly fair to mediocre, with a recognizable non-personable and very young staff that appears overall to be less than thrilled to be working; * What was once the absolute best "banana bread" in all of Athens is now dry and with less flavor. The coffee remains to be excellent (thanks to a chosen blend from Jittery Joe's), but beyond that nothing we ordered stood out as being better than average at best. Sadly, we all agreed that whatever changes have been made with management, cooking staff, hiring practices, etc., we will not be back here again as there are many far superior local breakfast locations within the Athens area. read more
