I'll start this by saying that I do not have a green thumb. I have even killed bamboo, which my dad said was quite an impressive feat! But there's something about being around plants that makes me happy. My mom has the most beautiful garden, so when she came to Chico to visit me, I thought she'd love the Plant Barn. It turns out, we both did! I appreciated the welcoming employees, but they also didn't hover. We were able to stroll the property, and admire all of the beautiful plants. It was really peaceful. Although I didn't buy anything, I spotted a few things in the gift shop that will likely bring me back. I've heard that they host classes - wreath making, flower arrangements, etc. - and I would definitely sign up for something like that! read more

If you love plants and love to visit nurseries, Plant Barn will be like a dream come true. Lots of unique and hard to find plants- at least where I live - and the old favorites as well. The staff are very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable! But wait! There's more! There is a gift shop. Oh yes. I bought a house plant from Plant Barn and realized when I got home it wouldn't be a fit for my family (poison to dogs and toxic if touched by baby) I went to return it and exchange it; they were super helpful and ended up switching out the plants without any hassle. They're super big with a wife selection. Honestly, not too expensive especially when you compare to big box stores. It's fairly similar. read more

Did you know you can host a get together at the Plant Barn?! My girlfriend and I just hosted a "watch me grow" baby shower at the Plant Barn and it was absolutely perfect. We were in the bright and airy greenhouse and had a blast. Each person potted a beautiful succulent to take home. So fun and creative. Also, give me everything in their adorable gift shop. So extremely helpful! My husband bought me a pot for my office, and I went to go find a plant to fill it with. Well, it was odd in size and I was very particular about certain aspects of a plant I wanted: height, low maintenance, can handle shade and sun, inside, etc. The woman helping me was SUPER helpful and showed me all the plants that could fit the bill until I found THE one for my office. Terrible Customer Service! I ordered a gift certificate for a family member's birthday that lives near Chico, CA thinking it would arrive to her fairly soon. 10 days later, the gift certificate has not arrived. When I called to check on this, they said to "call the post office" and "it's not their fault". I am very disappointed with the customer service and the fact that they didn't even verify the address or anything. And most of all, my mother in law didn't get a gift on her birthday. Don't order anything from them over the phone or have them mail anything. Apparently they don't do tracking either. read more

The Corona Virus has shut the operations down for now, but not out. The owner told me that they are exploring all avenues in an effort to get back into some sort of business to serve their customers. Love this place. I'm an aspiring overbearing plant mama but have little to no experience in the field. After finding out about this place, I wrangled up my roommates and went out there for a plethora of the greens and some much needed care advice. So many options. As soon as you get there, you realize you could actually spend the good part of a couple hours basking in the beauty of their maze of plants & gardening trinkets.. Well maybe that's just me but the place is amazing, let me tell you. Someone asked me if I needed help with anything right away, (she could probably sniff out that I was a newb), so I unloaded on her my dreams of filling my home and new back yard with a plethora of plants and flowers. Not only was she helpful, she pointed me in the direction of the plants & flowers that even the worst plant parent couldn't kill, which was exactly what I needed. I came out of there with a box full of succulents, aloe plants & much more confident that I could officially start my plant mama journey with success. - it's been a few months now and I have to say both myself and the plants are holding up phenomenally. This is such a beautiful nursery, and they have a huge variety of plants and shrubs and trees. One could wander through here all day. I've always had good luck with their plants until recently. I bought around a dozen vegetable, herb and flower plants two weeks ago. I brought them home on Saturday afternoon, and Sunday morning I planted then in wine barrels. One of the plants, a gaura began looking dried up and almost dead the morning after I got it home, before I planted it. I watered it with all the rest and kept it on my counter to watch it. On Monday morning all the blossoms and the top few inches of the plant were dried and crisp. I decided to return it to the nursery, as it had dried up so soon. They'd told me it was the last of these plants they had, so I figured it'd been there too long and was just on its last leg. My experience with other nurseries is that there is at least a short guarantee on the plants you buy there. I thought they'd take it back and offer me another plant in its stead. But what happened is this: the woman who I first showed it to looked at me as if I was crazy. She said that it looked like I'd let it dry up. I told her that wasn't the case and that the other $65 dollars of plants I'd purchased at the same time were thriving. She called another worker over and asked her what she thought. She said that it looked like it had dried out and been remoistened. Astounded, I said "in four hours it dried out?" She assured me that that could happen. I told her that of course I'd watered it, and would've done so even if it hadn't crisped up as it did. She told me to just cut the top few inches off and it could probably be saved. The part of all this that hurt was their attitude towards me, as though I had done something wrong and had no business returning the plant. As though I was lying about how I'd mistreated the plant, clearly not believing me when I assured them that wasn't the case. After this interaction I will not ever return, even though I still have money on the gift certificate I used that day. Businesses shouldn't treat customers so unkindly. It was a 4" plant. If it was clearly savable, I feel that they should've told me to go pick another plant and they'd try to save this one. Not send me home with my crisp little plant, feeling embarrassed and demeaned. read more

I love The Plant Barn! They don't just sell the same old generic stuff that you can get in every discount garden center in town after town. They have cool, choice, named varieties, many of which are propagated right there in their own greenhouses. They remind me very much of Chico's long-gone Hubbard's Westside Gardens. I get all of my seasonal plants and flowers here. They propagate from seed in their own green houses. This is the only place like this in Chico. They absolutely know what they've doing, they know what will grow here, the place is beautiful, and they let me bring my dog. Very cool Homie local small town feel place. I've been buying from them for over 20 years. People have been working here for a long time and have lots of experience with local gardening. Some of these people are master gardeners themselves so thief experience is invaluable and has helped me kill less plants. read more

Why I love The Plant Barn- First, the ladies who work there. They are fantastic. They're helpful, kind, patient and try their best to get you what you want. Second, their stock. Ninety five percent of the time I find there what I can't at other nurseries. Third, their prices are right. I go here first before any place else.
