The counter server (I believe it was owner Zoe) was quick and friendly, however the drink had a hard to detect flavor of matcha, and was without "mouth feel" of matcha -- more like a clear plastic tumbler of iced milk. The lavender syrup was never blended, and only detected after being able to see it at the bottom of the clear plastic tumbler. (The latte appeared to have been blended -- same pale green color.) All this for around $6. Two stars for the availability of nice kitchen accessories, but I will never order a beverage nor sandwich again. I have come to conclusion that customers return here because it's a nice setting to sit and privately chat with a friend.

It is the sort of hamlet that makes a visitor slow their pace without quite meaning to, the Litchfield Hills rolling out beyond it like something out of a watercolor. Staying nearby at the Mayflower Inn, I went looking for a local table to match the setting. I found one -- almost. Marty Cafe, at first glance, is a small triumph of design and intention. Preserves and pantry goods gleam from jars along the shelves; a case of lunch wraps and a pot of tomato-basil soup make their case with real visual confidence; the menu accommodates gluten-free diners without treating the matter as an afterthought. I ordered the salmon lox on a bagel, which was excellent, and the tuna Italian sandwich on a brioche bun, which came with potato chips and was just as good, along with a lavender latte that I would, without hesitation, order again. On the strength of the food alone, this is a café doing something right. But a café is also a room, and a room is shaped by whoever stands at its door. That role, on the day I visited, belonged to a host named Charlie, and it is here that the experience faltered. Warmth was clearly available in him -- I watched him extend it freely to the guests before and after me, with easy smiles and unhurried greetings. What I received instead was a flat, appraising stare, and when I paused to consider the menu, he simply looked away, as though the moment of my deciding wasn't worth his attention. Whether this had anything to do with who I am, I can't say with certainty -- but I know how it felt, and I know it isn't a feeling any guest should carry out the door with their coffee. Good hosting, at its core, is not complicated: it asks only that everyone who walks through the door be met with the same ease. That standard should hold regardless of who is standing on the other side of it, resident or visitor alike. One employee, a woman with white-blonde hair, offered a genuine warmth that I was grateful for, and that I don't want to go unmentioned. It simply wasn't enough to change the shape of the visit. I also left without being offered a bag for my order -- a small detail, but one more sign that the care extended to other tables didn't quite reach mine. I don't doubt that Marty Cafe can be, for many, exactly the kind of charming local institution that Washington Depot deserves. The food supports that case handily. But charm in a town like this is only half the ingredients -- the other half is how a stranger is made to feel when they walk through the door. Overall, the interaction lacked the empathy and reassurance we had hoped for. No refund, credit, or acknowledgment was offered. As longtime customers who have celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones here over the years, the response was surprising. The bread exterior was very hard, and we noticed other nearby tables eating only the soft interior.
