I don't understand a lot of the negative reviews here. On a rainy stormy night we drove about 1/2 hour from Kent to visit this place that I had heard so much about, and the food did not disappoint. They have mint juleps at the bar, very nice! We split a caesar salad for an app, plenty for both of us, and perfectly dressed and crisp (despite some other reviewer whining about it being "bland"). For entrees, I'm not normally a meat loaf lover, but was intrigued by the inclusion of black truffle oil and marsala sauce and so ordered it. It was rather outrageously good, the accompanying summer veggies very flavorful. Partner had the seafood pot pie, very yummy except for the inclusion of fennel, which I personally do not care for. He loved it although the broth/gravy was a little thin for his taste. He plans to thicken it up a bit when he tackles the leftovers. My Cotes du Rhone wine with meal was delicious, but came in a smallish glass; could have benefited from a larger pour and a larger glass to expand the aroma. For dessert, which we don't always order, we had some sort of perfectly decadent chocolate lava type cake with just the right amount of ice cream. Way better than any lava cake I ever had! The accompanying coffee, even my decaf, was stellar. We sat in the room opposite the bar, at the windows next to the tumbling brook outside. Very nice atmosphere. The only mistep I would say was that when we called at 7.30 to make reso's, the gal on the phone stressed that the "kitchen closes at 8:00" and that we would have to order right away. We said okay no problem but were a tad worried about being rushed. She hung up before I could give my name and number in party. When we arrived, about 10 minutes to 8, the hostess who had answered the phone seemed confused and asked us if we were the ones who had called to see "if they were open". I said, well, we called for reservations, but you hung up before I could give my name. Despite this initial unwelcome-vibe weirdness, our waitress, Fiona, made us feel perfectly welcome and not rushed. Although she too did come to tell us, about 15 minutes in, that "the kitchen was closing" but we had already ordered and desserts weren't an issue. Something must have happened with a customer to make them gun-shy about this. In a nutshell, don't show up inside of an hour of the posted closing time if you want to be sure about getting served. And BTW the closing times on Google are incorrect; they are only open until 10 on Fridays and Saturdays, not every day. Although it's a long drive from where we actually live, we definitely plan to come back in winter to sit next to the cozy fireplace and sample the famous chicken pot pie and shepherd's pie croquettes. Burgers were extremely dry, overcooked, and completely flavorless. They took forever to arrive and were not warm. The buns were hard and stale. my partner ordered medium-rare, but it came out bone dry, almost white throughout. Crumbly meat. The server never asked if the nearly untouched plate was okay, just dropped the check. It was overpriced and utterly disappointing. To top it all off, I was confined to the bathroom shortly thereafter. Don't have solid proof this place was the culprit.... Go for the food, NOT the service!! Especially if you happen to get HARRY! We waited forever for this guy to take our order, then the French onion soup had a fly in it. REALLY!! Never in my life. This guy was so overwhelmed that I waited 1/2 hr for a refill on water. He was awful. The 3 of the 4 of us order coffee and dessert. 2 desserts came, never got mine. I just figured....screw it, didn't need it. The kicker?........after waiting at least 1/2 hr for them to bring us to-go containers we asked 2 different waiters for, we get them. Now this freaked me out....thought the guy was kidding......he brings the check and precedes to tell us another table paid our bill......but no!!....not in a good way where we walked away with a free dinner, the waiter had inadvertently given another table OUR bill and they paid it, so he gave us THEIR bill which he claims was about $35 cheaper! Our most recent visits over the past year have been noticeably better. The food tastes fresher and more flavorful, and the service has been consistently friendly and attentive. We especially enjoy sitting outside by the water when the weather allows. I'm happy to say that I no longer hesitate to visit. We've had some really enjoyable experiences lately. read more

This is our third time eating at this excellent restaurant. The food never disappoints. We started with an appetizer- we chose the Shepard's pie croquette. It was fried, crispy on outside and moist and delicious on the inside. As far as drinks we got the loong island iced tea( NY Accent) and an espresso martini. I loved mine b/c you could taste the cawfee. The main course was difficult, I wanted a comforting meal but the burgers looked sooo good. I begin my review in this way because so many other White Horse reviews seem nothing but complaints; Impatient foodies and people who just aren't happy unless they're complaining! On the contrary, The White Horse delivers consistent good value and 'dining out' experience over my 6 visits (with varying number of persons) over the past 10 years. Last night's experience reinforced my esteem of The White Horse's expertise in their tried and true (and extensive) menu, and no-nonsense server training. Service is spirited and prompt. And cheerful as if delighted to be there serving us. No undue wait times, and server check-ins: Yes -- but not intrusive -- the elusive balance! The overall experience is . . . lively (in a good way). I am here to confirm a recurring theme among reviews: The IMMENSE portions; I and my dining partner are small, lean people, and the remains of our meals made for two more satisfying meals at home. My chicken tikka masala was tangy and sweet and creamy and luscious in the right proportions -- and artistically presented. And I could see that my dining partner's marinated skirt steak over arugula salad was perfectly cooked (rare!), abundant, and, again, artistically presented. We shared the goat cheese and strawberry salad as a starter, and it was a super-fresh and savory meal in itself. We were too full to consider dessert! What a shame. read more

Mrs. K. and I arrived here to meet a friend for lunch. The White Horse opens at 11:30 and we weren't the first ones through the door this morning! A small crowd was waiting and that's a good sign for a restaurant. We were seated in one of the back dining rooms and warmly served. Lots of food today including a decent Reuben with fries for me and a French Onion soup for Mrs. K. She finished that with a crème brûlée that she enjoyed very much. If you can sit at the tables in the back over the small brook, I'd recommend it. I'm not sure if people smoke back there, but the water was lovely. We had a great meal and will definitely return. I met friends here for a pre-holiday meal; was my first time, but came very highly recommended. I was skeptical at first as the White Horse positions itself as an "English pub," but in reviewing the menu - it's all over the place. Impressions waking in were terrific. Great feel, good energy, beautiful dining room and bar with a perfect fireplace. The walls are adorned with history and there is even a book to guide you around the space if you choose to learn about what makes this place unique. We ordered some appetizers to share: spinach and artichoke dip and the goat cheese and arugula pizza. The apps tasted good (although the blended/pureed consistency of the spinach dip was like none I've ever experienced before) but they were small for the price. As a public service announcement, the items we ordered are literally an individual serving. I cannot speak for other apps on the menu. Entrees were much better than the starters. I ordered the chicken tikka masala (Punjab/spicy style) and it was very good. Savory, perfectly balanced, delicious. Enough food, for sure. Not a belly-busting portion - but I appreciated how the spice was balanced with banana, cashews, and a mango chutney. Very good. One friend ordered the chicken pot pie (which our server showed excitement about) - it was beautifully composed with a flaky crust and a cute horse crouton - but the taste was a safe "meh." Under seasoned, under chickened, just ok. Our other friend ordered the mushroom and walnut pappardelle in a cream sauce. It was delicious. Different. Savory. Maybe the best entree on our table. Service was OK. Attentive. But almost over-bearing. We were having a fun time and sharing holiday gifts, etc. clearly not ready to order - so we had to ask our server for some more time 3x. I suppose it's waaaaay better than getting lost in the crowd. Just no social awareness. All in all, I'm glad we went. We had a great time. Location for us was terrific. Feel and atmosphere was really good. I'll definitely be back and am anxious to try more of a pub-forward menu (burger, wings, etc.) One pet peeve: for a place that's an "authentic" pub, their "Shepherd's Pie" is made with ground beef. The White Horse is a country pub and restaurant with beautiful views of the river. I love that they made it look like an English pub. The menu also seems to be European inspired. From pot pie, Shepard's pie, bangers and mash, to French onion soup. The menu was lovely with a wide selection to choose from and the prices were pretty affordable. Inside, it looked historic which I love; there are apparently some historic artifacts as well. Parking can be tight but we were able to find a spot no problem. We decided to sit out on the patio; to my surprise there was a river back there. It was on the cooler May side but a sweater solved any coldness we had. I started off with a sangria and I really enjoyed it so I had two of those. Then a French onion soup which was delightful. My sons had Mac and cheese and that was ooey gooey good. There was a slight mishap, I ordered a chicken pot pie but a Shepard's pie came out; they rectified that quickly and gave me a sangria on the house. The pot pie was delicious; I love how flaky the crust was and it melted in my mouth. There were ample amount of chicken. The server we was polite and attentive. With the great views, drinks, service, and food, this place deserved 5 stars and I can't wait to go back. read more

We had been here before, and I didn't leave a review at that time because the place was extremely crowded and felt that our experience may have been a one off. We came here because it was highly recommended and the ambience was great. In our first visit, our food took forever to arrive and service was very slow. I ordered the Reuben and when I went to pick it up, there was a large hole in the other side of the bread and the whole thing just fell apart. . The pastrami was very dry and just not very good. Aside from that my wife's meal was very good and we had a beverage and enjoyed the ambiance. This time we went and felt that we had lucked out because there was no one in the place. Our first mistake was, we sat at a high top in the bar, but it was too close to the door, so it was very cold. Every time the door opened the cold air with flow in. I put that on us for choosing a poor seat. The waitress promptly came over and took our drink order and said she would be right back to take our food order as we were very hungry. We waited and waited and it took a while for her to arrive. It looked like she forgot about us and quickly stopped by the table after walking past And asked if we were ready and took our order without writing it down. About 10 minutes later someone else came over and said I'm trying to confirm your order because it was not written down and make sure that we had ordered was ordered properly. The place had hardly anyone in it and not all the tables were taken so we expected our food to be received rather quickly however, after about a half an hour, we started seeing the tables that came in after us were receiving their orders and we still had not arrived. We both had ordered burgers which didn't seem that complicated. After about 15 more minutes, and since we'd been there, almost an hour we still had not received our food. My wife finally went up to the bar and mentioned something to someone there and she said she would go check on the kitchen. She went into the kitchen and immediately came out with our food. Strange? So we basically waited almost an hour for our food and it appeared to have been ready in the back and just sitting there. When we first tasted our food, it was not warm at all. The fries were cold and soggy, and my both of our burgers were warm not hot. This convinced me our order was there and never picked up. At first we thought about sending it back but then after waiting almost an hour, we decided just to eat it and leave. I feel bad having to leave a bad review but it is what it is and that's what happened. I would understand if the restaurant was overly crowded but like I said there was many open tables so I'm not understanding what was the issue. They were running food out, but these runners seemed a bit confused. After two tries, I'm not sure we'll try it again because we like the other place in town up the street just as much. We arrived right at opening (11:30) Saturday 3/21/2026) and asked to sit by the fireplace. Our server was Jill and she welcomed us and took our drink order. We had been in and it was so tasty we came back because Kelly had to work on our first visit so hoped she could experience the great food and service we enjoyed previously with Rebecca outside on their gorgeous deck. We placed our orders and they arrived timely. Unfortunately, while service from Jill was exceptional, our meal wasn't as good. The Rueben sandwich was a disappointment as the bread was very lightly toasted, you could feel a slight toast, but couldn't see it resulting in a very soggy meal to attempt to eat. Some of it, we fork/knifed. Great Rueben's are grilled and the menu description says grilled (see pics). I will say the corned beef was good as was the sour kraut. Our son had the black diamond burger which came dry, no Dijon mustard so he had to request it, which came cold in a bullet (small metal sauce holder). This resulted in it not having everything mesh as well as if it had been put on immediately while it was assembled. His fries were also Luke warm. Kelly really enjoyed her meal, she had the bay crab burger with veggies instead of fries as did I (Rueben) and they were great. Finally the hubby picked the Punjabi version of the chicken tiki masala which is just a spicy version. Again, the chef missed the mark and it came out bland. Johnny showed it to our great server Jill and she retrieved some red pepper flakes for him to add himself. It made it taste slightly better, but couldn't have been incredible if it had been incorporated with the curry while cooking so all flavors meshed. The restaurant is so pretty with multiple dining rooms for different dining experiences. While we thought the chef missed the mark on 3 out of 4 dishes, it wasn't awful and we definitely will be back. This place is packed, they do quite a business. But the food is exceptional and the ambiance is very warm and rustic. On nice days you can sit on the patio by the stream. The menu is large and the food is exceptionally good. For something different I tried the meatloaf, which was excellent but very rich and filling (we should have skipped the nachos, albeit they had great flavor and the thin chips were very good). Went at 4pm on a Saturday. Wasn't crowded at all. No issues with service. Diet Pepsi and beer was fresh. The lobster sliders were delicious. The chicken pot pie was a little heavy with all the mashed potatoes. The burger was good but I have had better burgers elsewhere. The fries were tasty! If I could give the White Horse a negative review I would. I was employed here for about a month and a half and after that the manager completely ghosted me without putting me on schedule. I had messaged her twice and no response. I even tried calling the restaurant and they just said "she's busy right now" and I said to have her call me back... I was never called back once. Still haven't been notified if i was fired or not so i'll just consider myself as is. Complete lack of communication and respect. Saw that this restaurant won multiple awards in the litchfield county magazine. I had to try it. Started with the nachos which were excellent! I had a burger with wagyu meat outstanding. Couple I was with had fish and chips and the lamb kebabs. Everyone loved all the dishes. For dessert we had the chocolate moose cake, which my girlfriend said was the best she's ever had and I had to crème brûlée, which was probably also the best I've ever had and I've had it all over the place. We were able to get the last seats at the bar. We had cocktails and beers and everything was really good. We looked at the menu and so many things sounded good. Disappointed. This place is always on favorites lists and we were excited to try it, only to be very Disappointed. We were originally seated outside and no one came over to us at all for over 20 minutes. We went inside and were reseated. There seemed to be more confusion as to who was attending to our table. When we were finally asked for our order, we inquired about the sandwiches-- was the ham, turkey, etc. roasted in house? Nope. Nothing special here but what we got was decent. Prices are reasonable. After not having a meal here in over ten years because we no longer live in CT, I'm happy to report that the food was just as delicious as I remembered it being when we recently went while visiting old friends! I absolutely love this place. It is located right on the water. You can have indoor or outdoor seating. There are two different outdoor seating areas and two separate indoor areas one near the bar and one not. It's kind of dark inside, I always choose to sit outside. You definitely want to make a reservations to this restaurant. They have really cute drinks some come with little rubber duckies in them and the desserts come with little Buddhas and decorations on the plate. The pot pie comes with a horse on top made out of puff pastry it is delicious! The pot pie is a must-have! This time I went they were pretty busy so the service was a little slow but the food was so good! This is a place I go to after I visit Kent falls as it's close by. I'm updating my review after several recent visits. Go across the street to 202 instead. Their salads are excellent and you can sit outside by the river with your dog. White Horse is not dog friendly, in fact, you are policed with your service credentials, if you even have them. That's not my true issue with the place, however. Each and every visit I leave disappointed. If something wasn't wrong with the meal, then it's inevitably something off with staff. It's simply not a satisfying place despite all the hype. And, I'm not alone. So many people I talk to feel the same way. I wish it weren't the case as you think the White Horse is going to be fun. Stopped in +- 4:00 on Sunday with friends on the way home from Mt Tom State park. FOOD: Chilli Nachos, French onion soup, Fish and chips and burger were all very good. SERVICE; greeted friendly at door, accommodated us with a table next to the fireplace and was greeted immediately by our waitress, and the food was served within 15 minutes by other servers all seemingly working together. AMBIANCE; Did not do much recon, but a darker interior which was light enough to see and read your menu, plus multiple fireplaces added a nice touch on a cold wintery afternoon. Nicely located central bar but from what i could tell, not a very good view of the river out back if you sat directly at the bar. Looked like a great outdoor dining patio overlooking a nicely flowing river, would go back to check that out once warm weather is here. Look for updates!!! read more

I want to preface this review by saying that I never want to disparage a local business. With that said, I do pride myself on sharing an honest portrayal of my encounter and will continue to do that honestly and sincerely. My experience at The White Horse Country Pub was extremely disappointing. To highlight the positives, the glassware was fine and the olives were quite tasty. My martini was served in a cold glass but mixed with too much vermouth. My burger was cooked to a perfect medium rare but served with soggy bacon on top and soggy fries on the side. I did appreciate the unique mix of steak fries and sweet potato fries but I wished they were cooked thoroughly. My ultimate displeasure during my time here was the service. The bar staff and waitstaff were too invested in the needs of each other to be attentive to the guests' needs. It appeared that there were no defined employee roles and this resulted in me being overlooked while sitting at the bar. During my visit, my martini, soda, and water were never refilled. I was so thirsty by the end that I had to ask for my check so that I could leave to quench my thirst elsewhere. I also witnessed multiple guests who had to come to the bar with their billfolds from their tables both inside and outside of the restaurant to close their tabs. Staff members were on their phones, conversing in the back, eating while working, and more. From my perspective, the standards of professionalism here are very low and that created a chaotic and unpleasant guest experience.
