This is my review of The Pooch Pad in Midtown- Houston, TX. Negligent and incompetent care is what my Maddie received when I dropped her off when I went home for Thanksgiving. (Maddie is a 5-year-old Weimaraner). I dropped her off three days early due to their holiday schedule and so she was dropped off on a Tuesday evening. I got a phone call on Monday morning from a staff member stating Maddie's eyes were "a little red." They asked for permission to give Benadryl and stated they would call later that day with a follow up. They called a few hours later and informed me the Benadryl "cleared it up." I was relieved and assumed she was in good care. I came home Tuesday morning and went straight to pick her up. I walked in and the lady informed me she was in the kennel in the grooming room. I thought that was strange... but then she did not come out of the kennel for the women. I called her name a couple times until she heard me and here came Maddie, slowly walking with her head hanging low and tail tucked. She came over to me and hid behind me and sat down. She was shaking... and looked to be extremely ill. My first reaction was oh my god... what happened to her eyes. They were red, swollen and draining. I took her to the car after paying and she got in the passenger seat. When I got in the car, I looked over to pet her and immediately noticed a HUGE hematoma on her abdomen. I ran inside and asked the women what had happened to her abdomen. The women said she didn't know what I was talking about and came outside to look. When I showed her, she said she didn't even know it was there. I immediately called her vet and made an emergency appointment. I took her straight there and she was so lethargic she crawled under the bench and didn't move... Her treatment was extensive... she required antibiotics, steroids, pain medication, an ER visit for a ruptured hematoma/abscess and fluids, surgery consult, wound care every 2 days by the Vet for the sutured in dressing/packing and multiple blood draws/labs and continuous monitoring. I missed several shifts at work in the ER to take care of her (night shift nurse). Her recovery took approximately a month. To this day she is not the same dog I dropped off. I dropped her off at what I thought to be a reliable, safe, and competent facility. They state on their website they provide "wellness checks and continuous monitoring of your pets throughout the day" and "all of our dog daycare staff members are highly-trained, take their jobs very seriously." That was clearly not done. The owner even stated they have too many dogs to watch during the holidays they can't keep up with all of them. They had camera footage that could have shown what happened to my Maddie. The owner stated it is erased from the memory due to only saving up to 7 days at a time. I asked for her to save it and she said she was not good with technology and she would see what she could do. Needless to say, I never saw a second of the footage. Even if they did not cause the trauma/hematoma on Maddie's abdomen... (which no underlying condition was found by the Vet- she is a healthy dog) they did not report to me or take Maddie to the vet. They failed to monitor her. They failed to provide a safe environment. They failed to notify me of her condition. They FAILED. I have lost all trust in them. The owner stated she would reimburse me for her stay and the vet bills. After multiple emails and sending over the bills... she has not responded to any of my attempts. It saddens me to have to write such a negative review, but I feel it is necessary. I waited 2 days before posting this review to ensure My anger has subsided. What was done to my little Yorkie is cruel and unnecessary. I dropped my little Max off to be groomed at 9:45 AM. I called at 4:45 PM to check up on him and I was told he was not ready yet. I asked how much more time does she need and I was told an hour. She told me she can see him on the camera getting dried and shared with me that due to his dark claws there was an incident of cutting too short, but they have stopped the bleeding. I am aware this can happen sometimes. I came at at 5:50 and I was told he was almost done. I sat and waited for about 15 minutes are so and a gentleman brought him out with hair flying everywhere. It was okay I thought since they had to do last minute touch ups as the lady told me when I walked in. On my way home, little Max would not stop licking his paws (front and back) & his belly. When I got little Max home, I discovered why. :-(( He had 2 sizable cut wounds (about 1/2 inch in size) on one side of his belly and several bloody scratches on the other side. ALL of his hind claws were clipped to about 1/4 of an inch as well as several of the front claws to where the fleshy part in the center were exposed! What I don't understand is why would you do such a rushed job and hurt the poor little guy!!! This is not our first time (the 4th actually) at the Pooch Pad, but definitely our last. To the owner/groomer of Pooch Pad, PLEASE CALL THE PET OWNERS IF YOU'RE RUNNING BEHIND AND NEED MORE TIME!!! There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO BE SO RECKLESS AND HURT MY LITTE DOG THE WAY YOU DID. :-(((((( I contemplated putting pictures of what happened on here, but decided against it. read more

We've brought our dog here for grooming for the last 3 years but just boarded her for 6 days recently. The staff at the Pooch Pad is unmatched. They are so friendly and truly dog people. We were nervous about never having boarded our dog as she is a bit shy. But she came back to us in such great shape, in great spirits, with a great haircut, and all tuckered out from all the playtime and activity she got. We got regular updates and pictures sent to us which gave us so much peace of mind. She even made a best friend, who they strategically paired her with based on the dogs' personalities. they do such a wonderful job grooming our wheaten (not all groomers know how to cut wheatens) and they are so amazing overall with our pup. I dropped him off and ran errands for the afternoon, and they worked their magic!! bear can get little dreads on his ears and behind and it is difficult to cut them out without him getting squirmy. I called Thursday and set up an appointment for my dog to stay next week. My flight leaves at 6am tomorrow (Monday) and I was in a bit of a bind finding a place for him as my normal first and second choices were going out of town. They agreed to let me drop him off Sunday between 5-6pm, and everything seemed settled. They called me Friday evening around 6:30pm to confirm my reservation and time, but I missed their call. I called back Saturday morning around 10:30am after having my vet fax over his records. I talked to a young lady, and let her know I missed a call the night before confirming my dog's stay for the following week. I SPECIFICALLY stated that I would be dropping him off between 5-6pm on Sunday, and she confirmed that was okay. She was short with me, didn't ask my name or my dog's name and I had to tell her my name quick because she almost hung up on me. Fast forward to Sunday at 5:15pm. I pull up and the building is dark inside, no dog's anywhere, and the gate up to the house is padlocked, and dead bolted. I called multiple times, and left two messages between 5:15pm and 5:45pm, but no one answered. You have NO IDEA how much this inconvenienced me. If you are UNWILLING/ UNABLE to show up during a specific time, DO NOT advise someone you will be there. I cannot express the panic I felt, knowing I had less than 12 hours to find a place for my dog to stay for the week, or potentially lose my job. I don't know if it's due to a lack of communication on the part of the girl working Saturday, the end of Daylight Savings, or just a complete disregard for my time, but whatever it was is COMPLETELY unacceptable. read more

Took my dog here 3-4 times and was generally pleased with the service. But the last time(month ago), was the LAST time I go back. Picked up my dog, paid, got in the car and noticed blood on my shirt. Yes, they cut her(accidents happen), but they not only didn't try to stop the bleeding, they didn't even notify me of it. The cut also bled freely so it was not old. White dog, pretty hard to miss. Really loved the blood in my car and shirt before I saw the cut. I got home and called back to tell them what they did but of course they didn't answer. Not telling me about this was so pathetic, I would recommend NOBODY take their dog there. Who knows what will happen? And to the owner...before you get into a word war with customers on yelp, showing what a jackass you are, you might just put more effort into taking care of the animals, as opposed to arguing with dissatisfied customers online. I assume this is like if you don't want to move because your child [the kind with opposable thumbs] would have to go to a different [read: worse] school district. That's why I wouldn't move. I've been taking my four-legged, furry kiddo to Pooch Pad since he was around 8 weeks old - for the last 9 months. Anywhere from 1 - 3 x week. I've been told it's the cheapest place in town [pay cash and it's only $20/day]. Either way, this is definitely the best place for my 50 lb monster. They don't baby him ... but they do spoil him. He gets to run around with lots of other playful monsters, play in the pool, climb in plastic castles ... and make new friends. He also is taught not to jump, how to share and nap time means nap time. He comes home exhausted and whines everytime we pass the house. It's disheartening to see negative reviews about a 'rude owner.' The only light I can shine on that is ... it's usually her and maybe 1 or 2 other staff looking after 10+ dogs, while attending to their owners, her business and answering the phone. Her first priority is making sure the dogs are safe and taken care of ... so she may have been distracted. The only time she seemed distant to me was when she lost her best friend and Pooch Pad welcome committee, Max - but when I came back that eve to pick up Waylon we cried together sharing memories of how wonderful Max was ... and I'd only met him months before. She - and her staff - are in this business because they genuinely love dogs. And if anyone would like to sponsor my man ... I'd take him there everyday. Also, I've only ever taken my monster to Petco for grooming but ... seriously ... Pooch Pad is WAY better and cheaper. read more

I really, really wanted to like the Pooch Pad. It was the only place that had no bad reviews and my normal places to take my pup were all booked up. I boarded my dog over labor day when I was out of town and had a friend pick her up for me since I was getting home late. I picked her up from my friend late at night so I didn't notice the gash on her nose until I got home. My puppy came home to me in terrible shape - she had tiny scabs all over her body, a big gash in her nose where it looked like some dog had persumably attacked her, and she had 100% liquid stools. I called the pooch pad the next day to ask what had happened during her stay and it took awhile to get a hold of them. They finally got back to me and said there wasn't any particular event they recall that would leave a wound like that on her. They asked if I could bring her by so that they could examine her, but I was already on my way to the vet and heading out of town the following day again and just did not have time to take her all the way over there. They said without examining her themselves they wouldn't be able to help pay for the vet bills. Understandable, but I didn't have time. It turns out the liquid stools were unrelated to her stay there (it was her food), and I understand dogs play rough so the scabs were somewhat explainable, although there were A LOT. But the gash on her nose (I regret not taking a picture of it) was certainly NOT from playing rough. It was very clear that some dog had taken a bite out of her. I understand that this can happen, I really do, especially if there are a lot of dogs around like on a holiday weekend. But if you pick up your kid from day care and they have a cut on their face you're going to want to know at least what happened. The Pooch Pad wasn't able to provide a reasonable explanation, which is so disappointing. They said to have the vet call them to let them know her status, but I never followed up on that as there's not much a vet can do for some scabs, and the diarrhea was not their fault. Is this a reason to not take your pooch there? Probably not, but I won't be back. read more

I take my best friend Phoebe regularly to spend a day with her friends at the Pooch Pad while I go to work. I've taken her there for almost two years. They call her Princess there. When she gets to the gate she is pulling as hard as she can to get inside and sniff which one of her friends are there to play with. Her desire to be there tells me more then anything how they treat our dogs while we are gone. The women that care for the dogs are incredible. They are Phoebe's "other family". Kristi and the rest of the staff have been phenomenal and made me feel so comfortable every time. I have no doubt that they truly love and care about my dog and treat her as one of their own. Although I have not brought my dog to this "business" in 2 years I felt the need to write a review because I noticed that all of the bad reviewed have been filtered, I assume in hopes that people will overlook the 14 filtered reviews (on the bottom right) and make the mistake of bringing their pet to this place. The last time I left my dog at the Pooch Pad the owner brought her out to me and didn't even notice she had a large chunk of flesh missing out of her side. When I went back to the Pooch Pad to confront the owner about my $500+ in vet bills, she got in my face and said "WE CAN'T KEEP AN EYE ON ALL THE DOGS ALL THE TIME...IF YOU THINK I AM GOING TO PAY YOUR VET BILL, I'M NOT." The point of a doggy day care IS TO KEEP AN EYE ON PEOPLE'S DOGS AT ALL TIME. This is a sorry excuse for a business and even after leaving this place and going to a day care that actually cares about dogs, I still continue to hear horror stories about the Pooch Pad. I took my pup to the pooch pad for his first day of daycare since we have moved to the area and I couldn't be happier with the service + staff! To start something that sets this daycare apart from others is that their temperament testing allows for your dog to spend the entire day at daycare the day of the temperament test if they do okay with other dogs. Since my dog has been to daycare before I really didn't want to bring him in for a temperament test on the weekend before I could bring him in for daycare. Their system with the temperament testing was a HUGE plus for me! After my dogs first day he was completely exhausted for the entire night! To me that is the test of a great daycare! If my pup comes home tired from playing all day I know he had a great day at daycare. I had asked about their grooming prices and they were very reasonable, another huge perk is that they will groom him during his daycare stay so I don't have to bring him in for 2 separate visits. Last but not least- they have the BEST prices in town and their location is super convenient for anyone working downtown. Highly HIGHLY recommend ! read more

They got me! I Dropped off my 8 lbs dog on Saturday at 3:30 pm for a night stay. I was not allowed to pick her up until 5 pm on Sunday due to the fact that they are closed on Sunday. In order to pick her up on Sunday, they charge an additional $25.00. This was disclosed to me prior to the drop off so all is good. So I show up at 5 pm on Sunday and the attendant tells me that I need to pay for two nights plus the $25 charge for Sunday pick up! Now I'm a simple man but a nights stay is a nights stay. Charging an extra day is just stealing. They do not allow you to pick up any earlier than 5 pm and if they are closed, what is the additional day's charge for. So attendant called what I can only assume is the owner. He handed me the phone where she starts off in a indignant tone, "you were explained the terms before you dropped off". Ah, no! only the $25 charge for Sunday pickup. I told this person that "they got me" and that I would never be back. She then called back and told the attendant to give me a $25.00 discount which I refused. My thought is if your gonna steal, than the world needs to know you're a thief. The bottom line is this. The total charge for a nights stay was $95.00! Total time was 25.5 hours which was mandated by the facility. A morning pickup should have been available unless nobody is there on Sunday morning which leads to more questions like who is feeding the animals in the morning. The price if I waited a day and picked up on Monday would have been $70.00 ($60.00 if they charged the price on their website). For $95.00, my dog could have got a room at Hotel Derek without being left in a wire cage for about 20 hours!. Too many choices in the Midtown/Montrose area to get jacked by this place. Your pet deserves better. read more

Sweet folks and I feel sick that I have to rate so low but I'm pretty upset that my dog's eyelashes were trimmed on one eye. I'm glad the other eye wasn't trimmed but it will take months for the eyelashes to grow back to what they were. I'm not even sure how that happened since I had asked for just the beard to be trimmed. I love my dog's lashes though because they're so striking, so this has just broken my heart. I'm also upset that I was asked to pay and tip before seeing my dog. A lot of his hair is very uneven in weird places, which is disappointing based on how little of his body was actually trimmed in this cut. So I'm a little upset to have spent over $100 + tip, especially being that his lashes were chopped off. My pup smells a little fruity now I think due to the shampoo used, and it's not bad but it's a little too chemically almost like bubblegum so I think I'll need to wash it off of him as well. We love The Pooch Pad! I've been taking my dog Lola here for doggy daycare, grooming, and occasional overnight boarding for years. The staff is great and extremely attentive. I feel like they genuinely care about my dog and her well-being. The dogs spend the majority of the day playing out of the kennel, and for those hot summer months, they have misters and kiddie pools to keep the dogs cool. Lola is always very excited when we pull up and exhausted when she leaves, a true measure of a good doggy daycare, in my opinion. read more

If you have a normal dog, meaning he or she likes to play with other dogs, sunbathe in the grass, get dirty, play with lots of toys and receive tons of affection then this place is perfect. The Pooch Pad, conveniently located in Midtown, is a cozy Victorian house with a great backyard; the environment isn't confining or cold and offers the most play and social time I've ever seen available at any Houston kennel. The staff is friendly and laid back, they'll work with you on drop off and pick up times.... unlike some places that will charge you an entire extra day if you're 15 minutes late. The rates are very reasonable as well. Yeah sure, you can pay $65+ a night to have your dog stay in a luxury loft with fancy satin beds but if your friend could choose they'd run for a comfy couch and the tennis ball at The Pooch Pad =) read more

We love the Pooch Pad!! This place has been my savior since getting a little rambunctious puppy. My puppy loves coming and playing and is always so worn out after daycare. Prices are super reasonable. Highly recommend for boarding as well- they play all day at daycare (included in the price) which is a huge plus. Grooming services are also wonderful as well and the dogs always come home with super cute bandanas. Unfortunately this is another no for me as far as dog grooming in Houston. I recently moved to Midtown and was hoping to find a groomer close by (since I was not able to get in touch with Keeley from Paw Spa Galleria for a while who was anything but great). I was happy to be able to get an appointment the next day since Ari's hair started to get long and I wanted to shorten it to 1 ¼ - 1 1/2 " but he ended up with a 1/2 " uneven hair which looks horrible on a tiny maltipoo. If I wanted his hair to be cut with clippers I would take him to PetSmart and it would cost me half of what I paid. In fact I took him to PetSmart on Sheppard seven weeks ago and William gave him the best cut, besides Keeley, out of six groomers I tried in Houston with a hair length I wanted. It is my bad that I thought my dog will be more pampered at some place other than PetSmart. I have to point out that I was expecting more as far as the interior of The Pooch Pad based on pictures. It did not small so good either. Also the fact that they put my dog in the yard while they brought all other dogs inside and left him there by himself made me feel unsettled. He was still there when I passed by 15-20 minutes later. I almost went in to take him and after seeing his haircut I wish I have had listened to my gut feeling and did it. The groomer also nicked him deep, more than anyone ever, but she at least told me about it which does not make it less painful. One last thing to point out is that I do not appreciate any place that my dog comes from after being there for hours and can't stop drinking water. He stayed there for 6 1/2 hours and obviously did not drink any. See pictures of Ari from the last night and today and decide for yourself. I have been sending my dog to Pooch Pad for years now, so it's time for another review (my last one was in 2013). My dog Bodhi has severe separation anxiety, but he LOVES Pooch Pad. He even has a best friend - seriously! Christi, Abby and Elaine love dogs, plain and simple. I can go away on an unscheduled business trip at the drop of a hat with no worries about Bodhi feeling abandoned or being lonely. Bodhi stays there every week day and gets a bath on Fridays, and then his once or twice-yearly shave-down when hot weather comes. They are my partner in dog care. I love the Pooch Pad!! When my little family (me, husband, and pup) moved to Houston, we left all of our family and friends behind. We knew that this meant no one would be able to watch our pup when we went out of town, and we'd have to find a kennel of some sort where she could stay, which I hate. A couple months before Christmas, I started calling around to find out the rates/availability for her to stay at a kennel while we were out of town for the holidays. I started to get really worried after I talked to a couple places who were already fully booked. Then, I called Pooch Pad. They let me know that they don't typically take reservations, but will do so for the holidays. They said they were nowhere near booked, and I had time to make a decision about if they were the right place for my pup. They explained that their boarding is $35 a night, and is semi-cage-free, meaning that during the day, the pups are in doggie day care (free to roam!) and then kenneled at night. What a steal!! Most places cost more than this, and the dogs are kenneled almost the entire day. My only hesitation was that my pup, while fine with other dogs, had never gone to doggie day care before. No problem, they said. They had me bring her in for a day of doggie day care to see if it was a good fit. Bonus: first day of day care is free!!! So exciting. As it turns out, my pup did great at doggie day care, and she actually seemed to really like it. We made reservations for her for 6 days for Christmas, and although she was not happy when we dropped her off, she seemed to be in good spirits when we picked her up. We called to check on her, and the staff was great--gave us a funny story about her jumping up in a reclining chair when it was time to head to the kennel--and never gave me a feeling like we were bothering them by calling. About a month later, we left her again for 6 days while we went on vacation, and this time my pup was excited to head into the day care when we dropped her off! Again, we called once to check on her and they happily gave us an update that she was doing great. She will end up going back for a few days a couple more times, and although I still hate the idea of leaving her with someone who isn't family, I feel so much better knowing that she is at Pooch Pad. She seems to have fun, gets great staff reports, and comes home happy and dirty from playing with all the other doggies. I highly recommend pooch pad if your dog is socialized and would enjoy a doggie day care style boarding!! They are great and make me feel that my baby is well-taken care of, which is priceless. Other bonuses: 5% off if you pay cash (which is like $10 of savings when they stay for a week!); they separate small dogs and big dogs; they're great about following your instructions for feeding schedules, even when it's a little complicated (ie: 1/2 can of wet food mixed with one baggie of dry food twice daily). read more

I am saddened and frankly stunned to read any bad reviews for this place. I can only say that our experience with the Pooch Pad has been great. They seem to genuinely care for our pups, they know them by name, and they are always accommodating when we do a last minute drop-off. I've brought my Pomeranian as well as my old black lab here multiple times for grooming. They always do great on my pom's lion cut and my old man lab has been happy after leaving with a bath and blueberry facial. I didn't give it 5 stars because sometimes it takes a little longer than the quoted time to get the grooming done. read more

I've taken my boxer, Walker to The Pooch Pad for almost 3 years. They've always treated him exceptionally well and even taught him to sit and shake! Over the three years, they've demonstrated professionalism, responsibility and have provided the best customer service. I used Pooch Pad to groom my both of my dogs for almost 2 years and was always happy with how they came home. I liked that they kept them there all day so it was also like a doggie day care trip. However, one time I got them groomed and one of my dogs came home with her toe cut. They bandaged it up and said it would be ok and the vet wouldn't be able to do anything about it. The next day I take the bandage off and the cut is HUGE. I took her to the vet and they said the piece of her paw pad was hanging on by a thread so they had to cut it off. I understand that accidents happened, but the way Pooch Pad handled the situation was terrible. First of all, Christi (the manager?) shouldn't have told me the cut was no big deal and played it off as nothing. Then, when I went back and told them about the vet bills ($350 btw, AND I paid for the grooming in which my dogs toe got cut), Christi said she would notify the owner and get back to me about how to reimburse me. FOUR months went by, and I would call every so often to check, but no word from the owner. Super sketchy... you would think the owner cared about her clients. Clearly they do not. Unfortunately, won't be going back here again. read more
