I want to start by saying that our dogs have stayed at this kennel on a handful of occasions without incident; however, our last stay was not one of those visits. We dropped our two dogs off at Guten Morgen Kennels for a week-long stay in June 2023. After a long week, so excited to see them, we picked them up first thing Saturday morning not knowing the sadness the next few days would bring. As soon as we arrived home and got out of the car both dogs peed so much, how was that possible considering it was around 10 a.m.? Bringing them in the house both drank like they hadn't had water for some time. My husband and I were very troubled about both of those findings. After being home and settling in we noticed that both were very snotty and were sneezing. Our dogs have never had a sniffle so this was instantly alarming. Both got a bath and we kept a close eye on them over the next day. Monday morning I immediately called my vet to get both of them in for an appointment. Our Frenchie was significantly worse than our Mastiff. Our vet instructed me to head directly to the ER because she was very concerned about her respiratory system. Because she is a French Bulldog she was at risk for serious complications. Our Mastiff was put on antibiotics. Both dogs were diagnosed with kennel cough. Over the next few days, multiple antibiotics, and a stay in the hospital our Frenchie lost her battle with the illness due to complications. We were and continue to be in complete devastation. This wasn't supposed to happen. We just went on vacation. I alerted Teena Monday morning after speaking to my vet that the dogs were very sick and that our Frenchie was headed to the ER and our Mastiff was on an antibiotic. As soon as I heard the ER suspected kennel cough I relayed that information to Teena. I felt it was my responsibility to keep her in the loop so that no other dog got sick and another family didn't have to experience what we were. I was unclear how it could be kennel cough, as our dogs had all of their shots. Unaware that the dogs could still contract kennel cough even with the vaccine because of the different strains. The day that we lost our Frenchie the ER doctor called us with the results of her respiratory test. She tested positive for the Canine Herpes Virus Type 1. What????? In a state of sadness and anger, I relayed the message to Teena. At that time I couldn't even talk and sent the news via text. Thursday I received a call from her, many things were said on her end, I was numb. I heard a lot of excuses and even accusations that maybe our dog carried the virus. If either of our dogs carried the virus they would have shown symptoms previously. Again, they have never had any respiratory illnesses or symptoms at the ages of 9.5 and 5. Our dogs never went around other dogs. They were home with us all the time. They didn't go to the park, no play dates, only Guten Morgen when we had to go out of town. The kennel was instructed to not allow our dogs to play with others due to our Mastiff having an ACL injury. That was the biggest excuse. How could they get sick there if they didn't interact with other dogs? Good question, we are asking ourselves the same thing. Germs are germs and when asked, medical professionals agreed that the dogs had to have contracted the virus at the only place they were for 7 days. Our emergency contact (our daughter) should have been contacted immediately, but she wasn't. We were told they had no symptoms at the kennel. How could symptoms magically appear when we got home after being gone for 7 days? We couldn't continue to do the back-and-forth any longer, I ended communication via text. After expressing all of our feelings over the situation and the loss of our sweet girl, incurring over 6k in medical expenses for both dogs, I suggested that the least she could do was to refund our boarding fees. To date, this hasn't happened. I personally had two friends that had their dogs staying at the kennel during the time our dogs were there. They were never contacted to say that there were two very sick dogs and one resulted in a death. I was told that the other dog parents were contacted, some may have been, but my friends were not. If my dogs were in the same facility as another sick dog, I would expect to be notified immediately and would want to know what precautions were taken to prevent the spread. We are angry and still in disbelief. Things happen, we get that, but to take no ownership when the fact are the facts; medical test results are what they are............. As dog parents, we felt it was necessary to write this review to assist others in helping them when making a decision on where to send their fur babies.

I kept one of my cats here from September 19 and October 7 while I was on a foreign vacation. Months in advance, in April, I messaged this business to ask if they could board my three cats and administer a few medications such as "subcutaneous lactated-ringers fluid" for one cat who has stage-2 kidney disease. The owner replied, "Yes, we are able to provide the requested services" and "$25/pouch injection." In May, the owner and I again emailed each other, and she confirmed the services and prices. I decided to board only the one cat who needed medications and to keep the other two cats at home with my friend. On the business's website, I completed a registration form that asked about my cat's medical conditions, medications, veterinarian's contact information, and the cat's health documents. In September, the business and I emailed each other to confirm the dates of stay, the foods, and medications. The next day, hours before my husband and I would leave for our foreign vacation, we took our cat, carrier, food, and medications to the business for her to begin her stay. About 45 minutes after we left the business, two employees called us and said that they had never administered subcutaneous lactated ringers and did not know how to do it! My husband and I turned around our vehicle and drove another 45 minutes back. The owner should not have told us months earlier that that service is provided, and the employees should have told us when we dropped off the cat and supplies. At this point, I was considering keeping my cat at home with my other two cats and friend, but the employees told me that they could administer the lactated ringer's if I set up the bag, tubing, and needle. They said that they knew how to administer insulin injections, which also goes into subcutaneous tissue such as the scruff of the neck. They spoke nicely to us, and I appreciate that they were willing to try. My husband and I went on our foreign vacation. Our cat stayed in a small, multi-level cat condo, and she was occasionally allowed to roam around the larger room. On one day, an employee sent an email update about the cat. The employee tried to administer the lactated ringers and was able to give it one time in the 19 days. That medication was the entire reason why we kept the cat here. The total cost for the stay was $475. After we picked up the cat, she was vomiting more than usual, was dehydrated, and had much worse laboratory values. I will have empathy for the employees and will appreciate their efforts. I rarely write 2-star reviews, but the owner should not have told us that her business can administer subcutaneous lactated ringers.

That said, I used to train and show English mastiffs and now I have multiple little dogs as pets. I have seen and utilized many doggy day care centers, and Pgh Paws Pet Resort is excellent and a model for others to follow. What is especially different is the level of personal care and bonding each dog receives from caregivers there. The ratio of caregiver to dog is excellent and the dogs are separated into groups according to size and temperament. One of my pups is getting pretty old, and he has a whole little group of "elderlies" who hang out together and nap. When the group is rowdy, the elderlies are given their own space so they can relax without being bumped. My dogs have rarely been so excited to be dropped off for "puppy play school" as they are here. I feel lucky that they even want to come home!

I've bathed my Aussie here twice - the first time I decided to try out a new place; the last time, today, I decided to give this place a second chance. - The water is cold to lukewarm at best. - The soap is pushed through tubes by water - thus, it is watered down and cleans NOTHING...yes, they have the same system at Pet Supplies Plus, however, at least they provide pump bottles of each shampoo in addition to the crappy tube system. - The 'towels' are shammies no larger than a wash rag... thank goodness I had REAL towels in my truck to dry my cold and (still) dirty pup. - I don't understand the pricing... his first bath was $20.00 and his bath today cost $16.00... but he weighs more now!!! Save your money.....You can drive the same distance from the dog park to the South Park Shoppes Pet Supplies Plus, get a 'Dirty Dog' Card (5 baths for $26.00) be provided with real towels and more shampoo than you'll ever need - and the water is nice and warm.
