I'd give negative stars if I could. Start off with the room seeking of dirty feet, gross. The a/c came on maybe 2-3 times throughout the night, turned down as low as possible. The fridge didn't work, which we didn't realize until we had to throw away $60+ in fruit and juices. The shower wouldn't drain and found rolled up tissues in the bed. If all that wasn't enough to complain to management, he woke us up at 4am singing (praying) for an hour in the room next to us where it seems theyre living. Finally was able to fall back asleep around 5am, only to be woken up 30 mins or so later from a VERY loud yelling and shouting phone conversation. Not sure if its worse not being able to understand the conversation, or not. But when we knocked to ask them to be quieter, they came to stand next to the wall to speak even louder! WTF? Lone Pine, CA is one of the most adorable country towns. Its so sad someone would purchase a business and then take no pride in it or the community it belongs in. read more

Historic Hotel withsuffocating heat. My wife and I stayed at the Portal Hotel on our way from Nevada to SoCal. There were no rooms with private bath left. We took a room with a shared bath and shower down the hallway. The room itself was nice, we love old historical things. This was in March, still below freezing outside. When we entered the room, the heat was stifling. I was able to shut off the steam radiator, and opened the window In spite of that, the room was almost unbearable all night. The radiator was cold in the morning, so that was not the souce. The room was on the second floor, maybe the rooms below are super hot? The lobby has historic photos of John Wayne and others The shared shower was clean, and we didn't have a wait at 8 AM. Be ware, the tile floor is like ice when it is wet. The room had a sink, so you can brush your teeth and wash your face. A must see is the Western Film Museum, on the other side of the street. Great breakfast at Mount Whitney Cafe across the street. I also highly recommend Seasons Resturant Good steak at very reasonable prices. Would I stay at the Portal Hotel again? Probably not. The room temperature led to very little sleep. read more

Finding accommodations in this remote area is not easy. Motel rooms book up quickly, particularly on weekends. The Portal Motel is conveniently located on the main road into Lone Pine, and the price is reasonable. The rooms are modern, updated and clean. read more

The only downside is, like most businesses in town, the motel is right on Highway 395 with trucks rolling through all night, nevertheless I slept fine because the bed was good, and there was no neighbor noise so the walls are fairly solid since the place was almost full. Our room had been recently painted, the tub and sink area looked like new too, with nice granite countertop. A large, clean efficient room with micro and fridge, wall mounted flat screen, modern heat and a/c unit, a table, and parking right out front - just what we were looking for on a road trip, and oh yes, the price was right at under 70 dollars, with good restaurants within walking distance. read more

The Portal Motel sits along Hwy 395 as it passes through Lone Pine. Our room was a fair size, very clean with a comfortable bed, table and chairs. It looked like it had recently been renovated. The paint and carpet looked new. There was a fridge, micrwave and coffee maker with a large flat screen on the wall at the foot of the bed. The bathroom is all new, wtih granite bathtub surround. The hot water was very hot and strong water preassure. The room was reasonably quiet. It sits right on the highway, but the traffic noise was muted. The owner was very pleasant. The best part was the price. $66 for my wife and I. About the chapest price in town. If you are passing through and just need a room for the night, this would be my recommendation. read more

We stayed here on 2/10/2024, and this place really is a hidden gem. It's very comfy inside room, very quiet and extremely clean. The parking area is wonderful, you will park right outside your room so you can easily bring your stuff inside and rest assured your car is safe. I will definitely be staying here in the future. A "hidden" gem. Motel retro chic. You fill out a registration card when you check in. A card!! The room was very clean. Beds firm but comfortable. The AC worked superbly. Something you'll appreciate in this hot (yet cool/interesting) little town. TV a bit small but worked fine. Wi-Fi fast and reliable. Yes there is road noise. All night. All the reviews say clean rooms- they may appear clean but after my hike, I used my foam roller on the floor and found FOUR roaches in my room. Two were on their backs (dead I hope) and two moving. So gross and I was too scared to squish them and I felt it was too late (past midnight) to ask them to do it. At a larger hotel chain, I would have called but this seems like a mom & pop joint where not always someone at the counter. I sprayed my 100 DEET insect spray at the roaches but they are resilient and it did nothing. Water pressure in the shower is non-existent. When they cleaned my room, one towel had 2 big black hairs on it and I'm blonde... Other than that, this place was okay but I would not stay here again. $89 a night (that was with a $10 discount) I'd rather spend a little more and stay at the Best Western. read more

This room was great. I would request this particular room again. It was quiet and conventient and just outside the door was the most spectacular view of the Eastern Sierras. The toom was spacious and clean and although the beds were a little hard we slept well. read more

Nice little hotel, friendly staff. We walked in filthy from hiking John Muir Trail and were welcomed. The room was clean, functional, and allowed us to clean up from 3 weeks of hiking. The room price was good. The location is perfect for walking to dinner, breakfast, grocery store, etc. read more

I am not a picky guy. I have stayed at pretty horrible places around the world and have not complained. The reason for the two stars is the price ($120.00) and what you get in return. I would have given this place a 4 star review if the price had been $50 a night because that is what it should be priced at because of the following. 1. Run down with holes in the walls and door frames that are either left as a hole or patched poorly and left unpainted. 2. Lack of HOT WATER! I had just finished backpacking for six days and was really looking forward to a hot shower, what I got was a barely warm shower, which both of my friends in other rooms also had. 3. Dirty. It just felt unclean everywhere. When I did complain about the shower, someone did come to "look into it". The response I got was that too many people were taking a shower at the same time. As far as Im concerned I paid $120 for a room and it shouldn't matter if someone else in another room is taking a shower at the same time. Again, I would not be complaining if the price was different. I feel that they are taking advantage of a busy time of the year and gouging their customers without giving them the basics. read more

The Portal motel had very clean, tidy and cozy rooms. Not stingy about having coffee maker like other chain motels.

A basic and clean motel. Rooms are spacious. Bathroom is small but clean. Refrigerator and AC work. Ceilings are high at ten feet and have crown molding which is a nice touch. Window shades are clean and work. A bit pricey for a motel but its a Saturday in July. They don't take online reservations which is maybe why we were able to get a room the day before. We went here because Best Western did not have any vacancies. Came out to $88.00 for a non-smoker single room for a night. The motel seems to have gone through some pretty great renovations because the shower and sink appeared to be really new. Room came with a fridge, microwave, corded phone (who uses this anymore?), wi-fi, flat screen TV, alarm clock, and basic amenities. The bed sheets looked like they were straight from the 1980's. Overall, decent place to rest up after a hike. read more

This is a nice little place. The room was very clean and seems to have been recently remodeled. I liked that the fridge was on the large size for a room fridge because we brought most of our own food because of COVID. It is convenient to Mt. Whitney. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it is a little pricey for a basic Motel and the coffee is undrinkable. The woman running the place is very nice and friendly. read more

I think "A basic and clean motel" sums this place up nicely. We stayed in the Annex - a room with two king size beds - it was a big room! It's a classic and well maintained facility. AC worked great and you have lots of DirecTV channels on a smaller flat screen. We were there on a Friday night in the middle of summer and the price was $130. Anywhere else this would be a nice $65/night place - but high season in Lone Pine we could have easily spent $200/night for not much better accommodations. You're withing easy walking distance of several food/drink options. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. read more

After coming thru Death Valley on 136(exhausting) we came to Lone Pine and finally found a hotel that takes dogs. This was a nice change from our usual Motel 6! Nice sheets , big room, fridge,good air conditioning. Good wifi too. Thumbs up! read more

Very clean, comfortable and reasonably priced motel. It looks like it was recently renovated and it's also centrality located so you can walk to restaurants and shops on Main Street. Only downside is that the bed is hard like a rock. read more

Over the years, I have stayed at this Motel about 5 times, and every visit was pretty good. I go to Lone Pine to fish and explore, not to be pampered at a spa or lounge around a pool. The rooms in the portal Motel are basic, very clean and smell fresh. The owners of the Motel are super nice and gave us some great tips on where to eat and what to do in Lone Pine. The air conditioning works very well! It gets hot there! Over all, I like this place and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a nice place to stay without spending big bucks. read more

Not a bad place for post-Whitney lodging; price was better than the Dow villa for four people. We got back at 2am from Whitney and they had given away our room, but they were nice and gave us 2 two-person rooms for the same price. Issue with their showers tho - there's no edge under the curtain to catch water (gym-style), so if the drain is clogged, water will run out of the shower, out of the bathroom, and flood the sink/microwave/fridge area, at least for room 6. read more

Let's start with the positive .... clean, very large room. Down hill from there. Some of their rooms are on a side street which we had #17, noisy, flies (broken screen), very loud a/c unit, beds very hard. Made a late reservation for a Thursday on way to June Lake, not sure what but everything else was booked. Probably will avoid in the future. read more

Clean and comfortable, The Portal is an adequate Motel. It looks to have been built in the early 60s however it has been renovated and kept up to date with what you would expect to find in any major chain motel. In fact, they provided things that most motels do not such as, a refrigerator, a microwave, a flat panel TV, and free wireless Internet access. I have seen some negative reviews on other sites but they were 2 - 3 years old. It appears that they have gone through a renovation since then. It is family owned and they take pride in providing a good service. I would not hesitate to stay there again. read more

Basic motel, clean and well run. Rooms and and bathrooms were nicely remodeled. The air conditioning unit (true of many motels) was effective but loud. The "low" and "high" fan setting should be renamed "Jumbo Jet Takeoff" and "Space Shuttle Launch". Bring ear plugs if noise bothers you. read more

Clean, comfortable beds and affordable. If you ask for a room in the annex you are a bit off the highway which seems to be unusual for Lone Pine. Good place to stay on the way to Death Valley. read more
