The one Star reviews do not understand this is not some fancy establishment... this is an arcade dive bar... do not expect a five star meal and a drink. Another surprise waiting around the corner in Savannah. This was a little bit of a walk from our hotel but ended up being a happy accident (we were going to the dessert place nextdoor). The Portal is an old school gaming bar. A plethora of pinball machines awaits you here (Ghostbusters & Stranger Things top the list). They also have 2 skee ball lanes in front and The Walking Dead shoot 'em up game. Classic TMNT Arcade game (but only one player could play - the other slots weren't open). A massive screen with about 50-60 old school titles to play available too. One pool table, one air hokey table, a classic Mrs. Pac-Man/Galaga machine, a Pac-Man machine & a few other novelty games available. The bar was near the back and didn't have a ton of room. There is an ATM machine, next to the quarter dispenser. Good news is, the ATM will give you 2 Tens if you select $20. The quarter dispenser takes $1/$5/$10. Overall, it's a fun stop and I'd recommend checking it out. read more

Who doesn't love a game room! This place has an impressive collection of pin ball machines. If you love pinball or haven't ever played this is the place to go. They also have many other type games like skee ball as well. There is a small bar and a pool table in the back. They have a great selection of beer for such a small place. The service is always great! They have the wall filled with fake ids on the wall of the bar. So don't even try it! It's great for small groups or even date night. We ordered a Ruben and a Chicago dog, two drinks. They were both delicious. Had a good conversation with one of the bartenders Regarding a digestif he had at the bar. I looked up a drink mix and he made it, delicious. Then I played Star Wars platinum, haven't played pinball in years. two bucks for 20 minutes to play. Lots of fun, great place to go. We were looking for somewhere quick to grab a bite to eat before heading to the dessert restaurant where we had reservations. This place was a few doors down so we decided to give it a try. Upon walking in, this place looks like a total hole in the wall....floors could use a little work and there are old arcade games (which I found very cool) everywhere making it a bit crowded in an already small area. It's very retro and games are priced from 25 cents to a dollar. We headed to the counter to see what kind of food they had. We didn't have high expectation when they told us they were out of a few things my friend tried to order and when trying to order soda, we were told that the carbonation system was broke. We didn't have much time before our reservations so we decided to order what we could. My fiancé and I opted for chili dogs. Let me tell you--these were THE BEST damn hot dogs I have ever had (yes, I had to curse, they were THAT good)! It was a 1/4 lb beef hot dog, juicy and delicious topped with chili and onions. The chili seemed homemade? It was sooo good. Our friends ordered a meatball hoagie and a panini and they agreed that their food was very good as well. We tried to order more hot dogs but the one gentleman that was working behind the counter by himself was overwhelmed and told us it would be awhile. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to wait. I have been here several times to humble men at air hockey. lol they are probably one of the few places downtown that serve Hennessy. The ambience is really nice and chill. Once you get your quarters your kind of to yourself and everyone that's in there is really relaxed. The service is always nice. It's really loud and can get super spendy with some of the pinballs demanding a buck a go, more favorable pricing can be found on older games. they also have some vintage video plus a host of shoot 'em ups and a couple of old time oddies in the air hockey and the ski-ball machines. stopped in to work off some of the evening's desserts but someone had turned music up to 11... Full service bar inside but discretion is the better part of keeping a driving license. real food is available - the snacks in the cooler case look super good. really loud music accompanies videos on some of the bar side monitors but relative calm can be had out front on the sidewalk - had a nice chat out there with mr stephen and ms chelsea :-) I am usually easy going with bar-cades but we have a poor combination of the portal being too loud and me being too old so I can't be a fan :-\ read more

It's a few blocks away from where I work which makes it very convenient for me during shift. Right off the rip: the hospitality is a little rough around the edges. But I can easily look past it - for one, Portal fills a much needed void of late night food options. Secondly, it's a barcade and their game selection is awesome. So it's a place I enjoy going where I don't expect my experience to be catered. Sat down at an empty bar, with two people working behind it. One cook making hot dogs and one lady who is the bartender/server. Sat there for a few minutes while the lady was on her phone and decided to finally come greet us. It's a cold Sunday night so i wasn't expecting the place to be busy. But the service should've been a little better. The hot dog took awhile but it was pretty good, surprisingly good actually. Which made this experience a little better. The games looked pretty cool and they had a pool table that we played on. The pool table definitely needs some work and the balls needed a good cleaning, but it is what it is for a $1 game. Saw a bunch of youngins walked in and played the games, they looked like they were definitely under 21 and not old enough to be in a bar, it was about 11pm so didn't think underage kids would be allowed. I enjoy bars that have arcade games. There is no pressure to order a drink if you want to just play games and vice versa. The Portal definitely has a dive feel to it. The have a lot of the classic arcade games as well as the pool and air hockey tables in the back. The games all take quarters, so there is a change machine where you can feed in bills and then get the quarters in exchange. They had a stack of cups next to the quarters which was also convenient since my friend and I got $10 worth of quarters to play games (we did not use all of them). My favorite of the arcade games we played were Ms. Pacman and Galaga. We did not have any problems with the machines and they worked well. Overall, it was a fun pit stop while exploring the nightlife scene in Savannah although not my favorite place we went. read more

Unadulterated fun with an uber retro feel. The portal is an arcade that reminded me of my youth. The establishment has a ton of old school coin operated games that are reasonably priced. There is an air hockey and pool table in the back. The portal is also a full service bar and serves food until 4am. The men (especially Nick) behind the counter were so friendly and personable which lent to a great time. We were having such a great time we decided to order food. The food was good however my only critique was it was lukewarm. That was strange because it was cooked right on the spot. Nevertheless, my husband and I have found our new hangout spot. We were coming from out of town to visit for a week and stumbled upon this place while looking for game shops and nerd stores in the area; upon walking in I was not only blown away by the at home feeling that only a dive can provide, and secondarily the sheer number of vintage and new arcade games. Hands down the WORST example of arcade bars. Saw it on the street and got excited as I love the current trend of arcade bars across this nation. This is a FEEBLE attempt at what others have done well. Why you ask? If you visit headquarters in Chicago or Nashville. Or joystick or revery in Atlanta, the games are free and the bartenders aren't surly jerks. Helpful tip from one bar owner to another- when you stop trying to nickel and dime your guests you begin to make a fortune. Unlock your games like EVERY OTHER ARCADE BAR IN THE COUNTRY. It alleviates the the exceptions and complaints I had of two games eating my coins and not working as well as keeps your guest in-house longer. Charge a dollar or two more for your drinks to compensate for the difference and keep an eye on your bartenders attitude. Maybe when you close I'll swoop in and do it right. read more

Absolutely loved it. Stopped with my family (wife and HS aged kids) to kill a few hours before our flight home. Definitely a dive bar atmosphere, which I like. Food was described as better than cafeteria but not a restaurant, which is pretty dang accurate. I had the chili dog and my son had a quesadilla and we both thought the food was good. Staff was friendly and and relaxed. The gal (didn't catch her name but she just started) was easy to talk to and stayed on top of things. The games were $.50-1.00 per play which I don't think is out of line. If I lived in the area, I could see myself being a regular at this place for sure. I highly recommend. read more

I went here with my brother on a recent Monday night. As expected of a Monday it wasn't too crowded, so it was a perfect experience for us. Plenty of great arcade games from our childhood were here and also air hockey and a pool table. Decent selection of pinball machines. The staff were extremely friendly and gave great beer recommendations. I also see that they serve coffee which looked good but I didn't try any. Savannah has a lack of things to do downtown that aren't solely alcohol related and also a lack of arcades. This one hits two birds with one stone along with reasonably priced food! First walking in is EXCITING!!! It's definitely a "PORTAL" into the past!!! We placed our order and went to go play on the machines while we waited. There were so many to choose from: pinball machines, classic arcade machines (shooting, fighting, racing, etc.), foosball, billiards, darts, air hockey, etc.! The food came out and it was hot and delicious, seasoned and flavorful. We had the gauntlet, Mario, the Luigi, and a chili dog. i was told to visit here instead of 'Totally Awesome Bar', currently closed. I looked up their menu online, but their buggy website was not in tune with my ad-blocker, so i could not check prices, which they won't show, for some reason. For those interested, a Chicago dog costs $4. No need to go online. I ordered one of these along with a 'jalapeno popper' dog. Both were ok tasting, but the Chicago was a mess. A Chicago dog (properly done) is easily the best hot dog you'll ever eat. If you get one here it will NOT be done properly. The bun is too small and all the condiments piled on top, making it impossible to eat- that's the first time I've said that about a hot dog. My first bite of it caused the dog to explode all over my shirt. i asked for a fork/knife, only to see their cutlery display was completely empty, their stoner employees too busy to fill it. I wound up having to eat a simple Chicago dog with a knife & fork while wiping off mustard all over my shirt. The 'jalapeno popper' dog was easier to eat and pretty good, though not worth the $5 you'll pay for it. Seriously, for half that, go to any 7-11 or Circle K. Their 'arcade games' are a shitty mish-mash of arcade games, heavy on pinball. Places like Free Play and Nickelrama back home in Dallas turned me on to 'throwback arcades'. This place turned me right off. I ate my dogs, didn't play one game, and got the f@#$ out of there. You should, too. Decent (easy to eat) 'jalapeno dog' keeps this from being a zero-star review. read more
