I stopped in here for the first time recently when I had an hour to kill and didn't want to walk around in the dark and rain so much. I felt instantly comfortable. It's the type of place where you can sit at the bar by yourself and read a book while you drink a pint. They have a varied tap list and a decent happy hour - $3.25 pints! The room is long and low but the lighting is warm enough that it doesn't feel like a dungeon. The place is owned the greek restaurant upstairs and you can order food to the bar. I haven't had it but the menu looks good and the prices are decent. This is a good place to come on your way home from work for a quick drink or for a low-key night with a group of friends. read more

Dust parted, I was suddenly bathed in white light, a choir of angels sang a harmonized "aaah" and doves flew dramatically behind me when I took a bite of the pub fries -- french fries drizzled with mornay sauce and topped with a fried egg. The egg yolk and the sauce and the perfectly crispy fries. Oh mannn. If it wouldn't kill me to eat it everyday, I would. Awesome beer choices too! Service is inconsistent. They're always really nice and friendly but sometimes, it's kind of slow. No big, really. You'll want to stay anyway. But if you're not wanting to hang out all night, it might make you not very happy. Also I've been here a few times and they have yet to play music that I don't like. They've played the Black Keys (Attack & Release), Cold War Kids (Robbers & Cowards), Fugees and even some Charles Bradley. Quite the unexpected gem. read more

On a particularly cold and blustery November evening here in Seattle, I was invited by a friend to meet up with her in her favorite pub in Seattle. The Pub at 3rd Place. I've gotta admit, I liked this place before I even set foot inside the door. Why you ask? Because of the DOOR itself. Kinda felt like I was stepping into a log cabin, a wilderness lodge, or a place called the Bigfoot lodge down in LA (cool spot if you're down there). The inside was equally inviting. Lots of craftsmanship went into the design of this place. From the finished wood bar, to the wrought iron-leg tables. Lots of wood all around. The books along the side wall made for a nice touch as well. (even though I really didn't peruse them much). A very warm and cozy feel to this virtually hidden gem. The Pub at Third place feels like something out of Lord of the Rings. I wouldn't have been surprised at all to see a Hobbit running around. Or if Gandalf himself had poured my drink. And speaking of drinks: fantastic beer list! Loved every one. And they've adopted the food menu from the Vios cafe upstairs. I've already had Vios' food before (see review) so I knew what to expect. Excellent stuff. Though I have to admit, somehow Greek food - although excellent - seemed like a strange fit for the feel of this joint. Just didn't really feel like a greek food kind of place. Nevertheless, the food was excellent. Only con: The service was very slow and almost non-existent if you weren't sitting at the bar. Probably because it seemed like the bartender was the only person actually working here (not Gandalf). A couple more staff would be helpful. Overall, a great place to meet with friends, enjoy a small bite and share in some great conversation over some excellent beer. No attitude here at all. I'll definitely be back! This is my neighborhood go-to spot. It's a great option for happy hour, beer & board games, and even studying. There is always always a little bit of everything going on here, which adds to its appeal. The pub is very cabin-esque, with all the wood and big open tables in the front and back, and board games you can choose from. (I often bring my own because on busy nights all the good games **rummikub** are taken). They have a nice beer selection and a good but odd mix of food. There is the pub menu which has classics like burgers, mac and cheese, and fries but then there is also a large Greek menu. My favorite are pita dips, salads, and gyros. The mezze platter is a little skimpy- they give you one meager skewer and a tiny portion of dip/salad which hardly makes it worth it. Overall the greek menu is good for sharing a few small plates but difficult to make a complete meal. I am probably one of the youngest regulars at this establishment, but I keep going back. It's my favorite bar when I want to go out, but don't actually want to go OUT. read more

Omigosh! It's back to the 70s...fitting for a location in the basement of the former original PCC. The pub fronts on NE 65th street and is part of Third Place Books. Happy hour runs till 6 p.m. with $3 pints and a nice selection of brews on tap. I love the hoppy beers like IPA and their Diamond is a good, if quirky, entry in this category. Husb likes malty beers and drank a couple of Rogue Stouts. The pub grub was tasty enough. We split their nachos, made with tricolor corn chips, then, switching continents, went for a calzone stuffed with sausage, olives and ricotta served with marinara. Our hirsute waiter with long hair and ample beard evoked the kinder, gentler 1970s...or even the 60s! Service was mellow. Fellow pub-goers looked like they all walked over from their Ravenna abodes: no hipsters here. One youngish couple brought along a Scrabble game. It's a low-ceiling-ed place, long and narrow, with a pleasant bar and tables made of huge hunks of wood. If you missed (or miss) the old Seattle: here it is! read more

Are you looking for a nice little pub that is kind of off the beaten path? A nice cozy place to relax? The Pub at Third Place is exactly what you need! During Fall, my boyfriend and I decided to try one new pub every Thursday night. After driving by Third Place everyday on our way to school, one Thursday evening we decided to stop by for a beer. Mmmm. It was wonderful! They had a really good selection of beers on tap ranging from your average light to dark. The bartender girl seemed really knowledgeable about the beers (I can't stand bitter beer... she made a great recommendation!) and was really friendly. The ambiance is really what did it for me though. I really loved all the wood... the wood staircase, bar, neat tree trunk like walls. The decor made me feel like I had been transported to another world... and what's better than being transported to another world with beer! Mmm. I have to give The Pub at Third Place five stars for its excellent ambiance, knowledgeable bartender and yummy beer! read more

After 2 years in the University/Ravenna/Roosevelt 'hood, I was sure I had discovered all of the noteworthy pubs. I was wrong. In fact, I had overlooked one of the best pubs around. The Pub at Third Place has an amazing beer lineup, which is key. I tried three beers that I've never had before, and the bartender was willing to answer my questions as I tried to choose my next pint. To top it off, prices are reasonable and they have happy hour all day on Sunday! The wood decor is like something out of a fairytale, but it's warm and comfortable at the same time. One wall is lined with books and board games, and there were some beer-related magazines at the bar as well. I tried the nachos and crab cakes as well and I'll second that they are fantastic. I would've liked a few more food options (I'm wheat-free, my bf is pescatarian), but the quality of the food made it worth the try. This place feels like a thieves' den. Most likely hobbit thieves who love rustic wood decor. You enter through a solid wood door on the side of the building into a long wood-paneled basement space with tables and a bar top made from heavy slabs of glossy wood left in its organic form so the curves and knotholes remain visible. The closed-off feeling really works for this pub. The space is very cozy and would be a perfect spot to bring a date during fall or winter or you can settle in with a good friend and a beer. They have a great California cider here and also serve Greek food from Vios upstairs. Service is average to good. read more

Really you don't come here for the fast (or even table) service. It's nice, like someone (maybe a hobbit) carved a huge redwood tree into a pub and hired locals (who have adapted the slow French countryside life of living) to run a freaking awesome place to drink and be merry along with other activities like reading, laptop battle, do board games or meet up with friends. I watched a middle age couple, come in and get so angry that noone came to help them, they were so pissed, and when a food runner came by they waved him down and tried to order beers without yelling at him. MY point is, don't come in thinking that you are getting served. Really DIY, get up off your bum and go to the counter. They are friendly. ps: The spinach lasagna is great. read more

This is a pretty cool place. It is below the third place bookstore and they have a lot of natural edge wood furniture. No liquor but a pretty good selection of beer on tap. The food is from upstairs and isn't bad. I've been here a number of times when it appeared that graduate students were gathered to talk science and drink beer, so it is kinda an intellectual crowd. I have a friend who lives for this place. I enjoy it fine but don't go out of my way to get here. read more

This is one of my favorite hidden jewels of the Seattle bar scene for the dark, grey, rainy season in Seattle (i.e. any season other than summer). It has the cozy feel of a ski lodge, complete with beautiful exposed wood beams and fine, original craftsmanship all around. Honestly, the woodsy atmosphere is mostly what I'm there for. It almost feels wrong to walk in without slippers or order something other than a hot toddy. There is an entire bookcase of games for anyone to use and a good selection of beers. I'm not a huge fan of Greek food, but the menu items for Vios (in the bookstore upstairs) are tasty albeit on the pricey side. I've never had luck getting table service so now just dump my stuff at a table and head up to the bar. Once there, I expect a slightly -more-than-reasonable wait before the bartender takes my order but nothing too absurd. read more

I tried this place out for the first time last night. I visit the upstairs bookstore/cafe fairly regularly, but I've never felt the inspiration to head downstairs. I've missed out! As other reviewers said, there's a shiny wood/hobit vibe going on with the decor, but, I guess that doesn't bother me too much. The area is bright and it actually feels a bit more like a nice eatery (with hobit theme) than a bar. We had the nachos (beautiful and good), the crab cakes (which were FANTASTIC! - there's some kind of ginger thing going on w/ them), and the merlot, which was good enough. There's a bunch of games and books on shelves in the corner, so we played a game of scrabble. Fun, fun! This is near enough to home that I might just have to make it a hang-out! read more

I have to preface by saying that maybe I was going to have a great night with my fiance regardless of the venue, but I think our stop at The Pub at Third Place was the cherry on top of a wonderful evening. We stopped in on a Friday night for some beers and snackage. The joint was pretty busy with lots of groups playing board games, but we found a private spot and ordered some good beer and even better food. I played (and won) Rummikub for the first time over a Meze plate of lamb skewer, warm pita, green olive tapenade, and kopanisti. The fiance had the same with hummus and the kalamata tepanade. The lamb was spiced wonderfully, and despite getting large portions of the dips, we nearly finished them all off. The green olive tapenade and kopanisti were the stars for both the fiance and me. The bartenders were friendly and attentive, they had Bob Dylan playing the entire time we were there, and the atmosphere of the pub as a whole was intimate and welcoming. I really liked the decor, too - from previous yelp descriptions I thought it might be a little more cavernous and dank, but the wood features and lighting (plus alcohol) made for a very warm ambiance. The cafe up top is my new favorite spot to study, and I can't wait to study late enough to have an excuse to visit the pub again. read more

It's an unique place and I enjoyed the food and beer selection. The 4-star rating is for the restaurant-bookstore connection. If I lived in the neighborhood, I'm pretty sure I'd be there all the time. My husband had the eggplant sandwich and he said the bread was pretty tough, but otherwise okay. We both enjoyed the appetizer dips. Their beet salad was yummy. The only really downfall was the slow service. I use to be a waitress, therefore I understand that things could be happening behind the scenes and want to give the benefit of the doubt. They were somewhat busy, but the patio had four tables open. They told us to go ahead and seat ourselves, so we did. All the tables still needed to be bussed, but that was okay by us. We'll just wait at one of the tables. And wait. And wait some more. A server came and went several times with no signal from her that she'd be with us. A bus boy walked by and cleared another table (perhaps he doesn't recognize we're new customers?). My husband finally stood up and grabbed our silverware, water and menus from a nearby waitress station (not sure if we were suppose to, but we were thirsty from a day in the sun and not sure when we'll get service). I used my menu to scrape all the food from the table to the ground (I needed to take some kind of action after staring at it for 10 minutes). Once the waitress came by, we put in most of our order since we weren't sure when we'd see her again. I'm curious what the service would had been like if we ate inside. read more

I joined up with some friends at around 6:45pm on a Saturday night. The place was deserted. No big deal, maybe it's a hidden gem. No such luck, the waitress acted like she couldn't have cared less about us being there and just sort of stood and tapped her foot while we looked at the menu. I'm not a huge fan of beer, but I did have their pear cider and it was pretty good. Hence the 2 stars instead of 1. The mac and cheese was bland and for $7 for a bowl I was hoping for something better, the top was cold and the bottom was searing hot. Seriously, Kraft would have been better. Overall I was mostly disappointed with the lackluster waitress and food. I'm really quite surprised in these times that a business wouldn't appreciate your business. read more

I want to give this place six stars. This is one of my favorite places in seattle. It's also the only good thing in Ravenna, pretty much - besides the parks and the dogs. It has no windows because it's in the basement (I think), but that just gives it a warm cavernous feel. It's a great neighborhood spot, everyone knows my name, and the food is AWESOME. I started eating chicken because of their wings. It had been more than 20 years. They are that good. Sad for all of you (and me), they've (hopefully temporarily) stopped making the wings. Their other food is good too though. I recommend the mussels, the braised greens, the mac and cheese, the popcorn, even the pickled egg. But also, please join me in asking them to bring back the wings. Really great people work there, and it's a nice place to hang out for a couple hours, play chess, do some work or enjoy great company. This is some serious pub food, I never felt so good being in a pub. You can tell the food is cooked with love. Being down in the pub, we sat at the bar and ordered off the pub menu. This place is super chill with books and games to chose from. it reminds me of a little speakeasy I used to run in my previous life. Anyhow, like I said the food is cooked with with love and care. My body was willing digest each bite. We started off with pub fries and a large Caesar. Pub fries are the best in Seattle and smokes any poutine I have had in this city. Granted its not a poutine, but when were talking anything with some sort of gravy style sauce, it becomes defined as poutine related. The sunny side egg was cooked perfect. Truthfully, I thought I would get a fast cooked crispy around the edges egg with an overcooked bottom but instead it was a soft, perfectly cooked, runny yolk, sunny side up egg. I love it when restaurants cook eggs right. The Caesar here has to be the best Caesar in Seattle. The dressing is lemony with lots of dimensional acid as well the anchovy flavor is great. I could swear they are using white anchovies, just because the fishy flavor is so clean and authentic. don't ever change that Caesar. Next my guest and I shared Steak frites. Super tasty and cooked right. Nothing to complain about. Spending a couple hours there, just drinking and eating away we had dessert which was the semolina, hard to pronounce Greek thing. Sorry about that, but just perfect. Anyhow, this is my new go to spot when at pubbing. You just gotta know how to enjoy a non pretentious chill spot and grab a seat at the bar and let time pass by. read more

I was visiting Seattle over the weekend and I just wanted to have some beer with a friend that stays close by, so we walked into The Pub at Third Place. The place made me feel like I was inside a tree. They had so many beers on tap. I was craving native beers from Washington or Oregon, so we ordered a regional dark beer. The price was super great! quality plus affordable-nice!!! they stated they have about 18 beers on tap and the pitchers are only $13.00. This is my neighborhood bar of choice because of the great happy hour food (try the hummus plate) and the great selection of local beers. They also have my boyfriends favorite beer, Old Rasputin, on tap, which we have not found at a single other place in the city. The food is tasty, and moderately priced. I especially like the pub fries, which have an over easy egg on top. The service can be spotty when it's busy-takes a long time to get noticed and served, even with an empty beer glass on the table. I wish I could give this place more stars. It's my go to place for the off chance of a night free. The food is good, the beer selection is great. But the service totally blows! Every time I have been, I've had to wait more than five minutes for staff to notice me. More often than not, I have to get their attention by going up to the bar to order. Rarely do I see them more than a couple of times when I spend two hours there. Once, an hour? Really? I can finish a beer in 15 minutes. I'm only given a menu if I ask for it. I only get attention if I stare long enough. I used to wait tables and bartend. I usually tip more than what is necessary knowing that tips are what pay the bills, not the pay check. It's rare that I tip less than 20%. Even for mediocre service. But the service here gets 12% if they are lucky. read more

This is a terrific neighborhood hangout. Warm, inviting, great selection of beers on tap, plus excellent food (for a bar!) from Vios' kitchen upstairs. The vibe is much more Ballard-meets-brainiac than Capitol Hill hipster. Trendyness leaves at the doorstep -- you could hang here in your PJs and no one would bat an eye. Seems to attract groups of game-players, and their collection of board games (Catan, Scrabble, Pictionary) attests to this common pasttime. Again, this is not a hip bar, it's just the best place to relax with friends, enjoy some good food and drink, perhaps play a game or two, and call it a night. read more

An interesting combination Bookstore/Greek Restaurant/and Basement Pub up on 65th, this is a fun place for a beer, a snack, to do some Internet, or maybe buy or even sell a few good books. The bar doesn't have any windows but still has a warm and hobbitlike coziness. It seems like most of the interior, bars, and tables, was all cut out of one giant tree. Interesting. On tap you will find Mack and Jacks, Guiness, and a dozen or so other good beers, some local and some imported. We were there on a Monday and the place was pretty full. Seems to be a local favorite. The menu includes baked mac and cheese, burgers, Gyros and various bar foods. All good. Upstairs is the Greek place with a wider menu. The bookstore itself seems pretty good. I enjoy a place with lots of books that isn't part of a massive international chain. There were a number of people here with laptops; I didn't try the Internet but they do seem to have it. If you're looking Papas and Beer with drunk chicks falling down the stairs and people playing beer pong while yelling "Woot woot woot", this may not be for you, but if books and beer and a bar made out of a giant tree sound like the ticket, then this is your place. read more

My best friend wanted a logger fab birthday theme. I suggested the Pub at Third Place because I knew she would appreciate all the beautiful wood. I should have told her not to expect champagne but she was so thrilled by the Twin Peaksish vibe that she settled right down and joined in with me on a fabulous pitcher of Mac & Jacks. Our other best friend who completed our logger fab group was brave enough to join us in what I had previously referred to as my little Hobbit bar. This frightened her but she entered and was pleasantly surprised at the minimal style...and no creatures from middle earth. Just a very sweet bartender that the birthday girl affectionately referred to as "the yeti". I told her that wasn't nice but it was her birthday you see? He had lovely music playing the whole night. I must note also that the not birthday girl was not a beer drinker and became one that night! Wow! Lots of people talking quietly and playing board games. I was a little worried that we were interrupting the library vibe. (I tipped extra to make up for our raucous birthday celebration.) We ordered a big plate of nachos to share. Don't do that! What is the worst thing that could happen to a plate of nachos? Yep, not enough cheese. Just have beer for your meal. You'll want the extra room it's that good. read more

I found this place two years ago when I was wandering down the street in Roosevelt. It feels like the inside of cabin with everything from the walls to the tables carved out of wood. It has not only a beautiful decor but also has great beer. The beer I tried when I was in was a smoked Porter. It was a twist on a classic and porter and boy was it yummy. The also had an IPA my boyfriend loved and got two of them. Try the dip plate also! I love Tapas style eating and the dip plate is for someone like me who enjoys that style. The music was good old school Bluegrass. The Bluegrass really complimented the atmosphere and it made cozy and warm. My only small complaint was the music was a little too loud but what are you going to do. Overall a super cute neighborhood pub for all. read more

Upstairs: Fab bookstore that I gave five loving stars. Downstairs: Pub that looked very cool. As soon as I walked in I thought it looked like somewhere the Hobbits would hang out. It's all wood and cool lighting. Like it was carved out of a tree trunk. People. Why can I not get a f*cking drink in this town? Is there something about ordering drinks in Seattle that I don't understand? Can they smell the California on me and that's why I get abusive bar staff in this town? It's like I'm wearing a sign that says, "See how much abuse I'll take just to order a goddamn drink." Ok, here's what happened. I sat down and assumed it was table service, since neither of my male companions offered to get me a drink or pushed me in the general direction of the bar (either of which I would have been fine with although the former being much preferred). So I sit there for a few minutes and almost forgetting about the fact that I don't have a drink and the bartender comes over and says something along the lines of "Did you want to order a drink?" I can't remember exactly what he said because I was so taken aback by the tone. Let me explain. Imagine for a moment that you are in the Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton and a smelly homeless person walks in wearing only a cowboy hat and rubber duck on his privates (maybe you live in San Francisco and you don't have to imagine that because you've seen it). Anyway, the homeless dude comes in and he smells just horrible, of human filth and rotten fruit. And he sits down at a table and starts munching the free bread and drinking the free glasses of water. He's scratching his but and smelling his fingers and farting and burping at the other diners. The head waiter comes over and says, "Would you like to order anything, sir?" Now. You can imagine the kind of tone that would be said in, right? The sheer loathing dripping from every word? What they are really saying is, "I'm about 5 seconds from dropping your nasty ass right onto the curb. Now we can do this the nice way, or we can do it the hard way. What's it gonna be?" That is the tone that the bartender used with me. I wasn't offended or angry. I was, well... kind of scared. I thought the guy was going to throw me out on the street. He acted like I'd done something horrible. Dude, I don't know the procedures for the Hobbit Bar! Anyway it just kind of left me feeling a little weird so I was like, "Um, no, thanks, I'm going to leave..." and then I quietly backed out the door and ran to my car and locked it behind me. Yikes. You know, even now I'm kind of scared to give it less than 3 stars because I think the bartender might try to come find me. I don't KNOW about the Hobbit Rules, I don't KNOW! read more
