Started off with the Large Meats Pizza, which was built like a linebacker and baked like a dream--crispy crust, meaty mountain, and just enough grease to make your napkin sweat. No notes. Just vibes. Then came The Chief sub, and let me tell you, this thing had more going on than my group texts. It had flavor for days--every bite packed a punch--but by the time I was halfway through, it had collapsed like a poorly planned Jenga tower. Delicious? Yes. Dignified? Not even a little. The place itself? Clean and bright. There's a seating area if you want to dine in, and the decor's got plenty of Indian items to admire--plus games, in case you want to munch and match wits. Asked my buddy from Mt Gilead where to get a good pie since we were camping at Jellystone and he pointed me to the Purple Indian.....Excellent pizza in a small town environment....got the supreme and a large pepp extra sauce and it was fantastic! I worked in Mt Gilead 30 years ago and loved The Purple Indian. I recently moved back to town and couldn't wait to have it again. It did NOT DISAPPOINT. The young man that took my order was so polite and helpful, the Big Chief was delicious and it made my heart smile to know that a hometown pizza shop has successfully survived all these years. Many changes with new ownership. The sandwiches are very whimpy, meaning very little meant, cheese and toppings. The bread is different also. Disappointing. The pizza was very skimpy on the cheese and sauce and I'm not a sauce lover. This made is very dry. read more

Although it wasn't excellent, it was pretty good pizza. It was just greasy enough, decent sauce, decent amount of cheese, and the right amount of toppings. I picked up my pizza for a takeout order, so I can't say much about the restaurant experience.It is reasonably priced. The breadsticks are like Olive Garden breadsticks, so that's a plus. I would order their pizza again, but I would have to try it again one more time before I can recommend it to a friend. Overall, it was decent. read more

I've been going to the Purple Indian for as long as I can remember. This place holds a lot of nostalgia for me, as I spent countless Friday nights there as a kid, after the football games, drawing on the giant chalkboard and gobbling up pizza. Birthday parties, dinners with friends, and once I was old enough to drive, picking up pizzas and bringing them to parties. For me, going to the Purple Indian is the quintessential small town experience. That being said, the pizza itself is fantastic. Now I live in NYC, where great pizza can be found on every corner, but nothing compares to the pies served up by PI, with the crust that is deliciously crispy and chewy at the same time. I insist on getting pizza from PI *every* time I make it back to Mt. Gilead. I crave this stuff and look forward to it all year. read more

Great pizza, but the service on the night we were here was sub par. To be fair, our party of 12 kept the location open about 20 minutes past the close time of 8pm, but the employees kicking rocks up with their tires leaving was a bit much. Okay, enough of that, the pizza was fantastic. This exact place is where my mother and father met and had dates before I was born, so I guess I gotta thank the place for life. I am happy to see that even in this economy some of the small shops are hanging on, and hope to see this one do the same. read more

Great pizza, subs, salads, and chicken. A Morrow County staple for many years. Great quality product- not too many pizza places make their own fresh crust on site and still shred their own cheese! Even when they are super busy (most weekend nights) they are still super efficient and friendly. read more

I got a meatball sub and it was delicious, but quite messy. Seemed fairly quick considering it was obvious everyone was busy filling pick up orders and the prices were very reasonable. I have had many meatball subs and some places skimp on the meatballs, purple Indian did not! We will be back! read more

A friend had told us about the Purple Indian Pizza, it is a place you wouldn't just stumble on to because it is in behind a car wash. It was a Sunday evening, very busy but very courteous, the pizza was amazing,fresh toppings, homemade crust, and the most reasonable prices I've seen anywhere. Restroom leaves a lot to be desired but great pizza made up for that!!! read more

Arrived to pickup our pizzas and it was probably 100 degrees in the restaurant because of the ovens. Can't be sanitary especially with cheese and dairy based products in that heat. Got sick the following day with severe stomach pains. Wouldn't recommend this place read more

Just got home. Ordered a pizza and got a raw, undercooked pizza. Had to finish the pizza in the oven at home. Absolutely not acceptable. The worst experience I've had at this place. If they don't step it up. I'll never order here again. read more

I have only eaten inside the restaurant once and it wasn't a good experience. Very crowded and took forever to get out food. When we did get the pizza it was very excellent. Other than it being very crowded it was also a bit loud and the tables were really close and it was a bit crazy but had a good time!! read more

My friends and I tried this restaurant because of recommendations from some of the locals, and we were very disappointed. The staff is very friendly, but the dining room was atrocious. The floors were dirty, and our table was beside an air conditioning intake vent which was COVERED with dust. It was disgusting! We ordered chicken wings, which came highly recommended in other reviews. The interior of my first wing was ICE COLD. Ya know what that means? You guessed it....they'd obviously been refrigerated/frozen! My friend ordered chicken tenders which were dry as a bone and were more breading than chicken. The pizza was a big disappointment as well. I had read reviews that the pizza was greasy, due to the large amount of cheese. I didn't find the pizza greasy at all, but I did find it completely lacking in flavor. It was just bland. I'm not quite sure where some people draw their comparisons, but I suppose it's a matter of individual taste. I would never disuade someone from giving any local establishment a try. I love local "mom and pop" type restaurants. I had high hopes for this one, but it just missed the mark. Sorry! :-( read more

zero stars! they cant even get orders right!our order was repeated back correctly but was totally wrong! we cant eat peppers they put green peppers all over it! we ordered 14" pepperoni,half mushroom,half green olive plus 10 wings. we got a 14" pepperoni,all mushroom,all green olive,and all green pepper. had to wait an extra 20 mins. for the wings cause the forgot them.they didnt even offer to make a new pizza give our money back or anything for their screw up! the old owners would have made things right.plus the food and service was a lot better no matter how busy they got! purple indian needs to be shut down w/ how bad they have gotten read more

Kinda dig the place! Always get a good pie when traveling through. We have had a bunch of different toppings and always good. In all fairness, the back could use a thorough cleaning. Like a power washer, new tile and repaint. But the food and subs are all good and seem to gravitate to the PI when wandering through. And no, this is not NY or Chicago. Think it through. Just like comparing Lake wines to NAPA Valley - if you do that your pretty stupid. Way better than the chain place down the hill. read more

Used to be good. Last pizza was horrible. Soggy crust and sparse sauce. It lost its edge when they did away with the big black pizza oven.

It's not the prettiest place in the world but it's got the best pizza in the world. The pizza is just greasy enough with the right amount of sauce. There's always plenty of cheese and more than enough toppings. The subs are also pretty darn good. Any time we are in Mount Gilead or passing through we always have to stop at Purple Indian. read more

I have defended and recommended this establishment for years. I decided to take a friend there to eat today (11-30-2014). I got crap in a box. There was water pounding in the middle of the pizza and they swear they didn't water down the sauce and told me the "new" sauce is thicker. The dough was not cooked evenly and uncooked in a few places What a load of crap. They put extra punches on my card which I will never use again. HUGE disappointment. Won't be back unless it changes to what a great pie it used to be . read more

Disappointed in the lack of customer service. I was told they wouldn't make a pizza with BBQ sauce instead of pizza sauce. Especially since they have BBQ wings on the menu and all pizzas are made to order. read more

Not my hometown place but we were coming to town weekly for appointments. we had went to mcdonalds and pizza hut (dry food) so many times we were not impressed at all.. and I sought out to find this restaurant which my 63 year old father recommended several times for subs. We found it. I was hesitant to go in.. it was an old trailer looking shop in an old parking lot behind a car wash.. I doubted they were even open. We tried it anyways.. we love new pizza experiences.. always seeking new tastes.. the insides was very 80s and old looking but clean.. they give paper plates and cups we ordered a 2 liter for me and 3 kids.. The pizza.. omg mouth watering.. it was thin crusted and very greasy so much I remember folding my slices in half and eating like a taco..but so good.. we still crave this place.. something about how they make it... is unlike most we have ever found. They have a punch card.. something about every visit adds up and you get some perk when its full.. Ive only got one mark on it.. but plan to go back.. we no longer go to this town so its going to be a planned night out. read more

purple indian has went down hill so much in the last 7 years. this used to be the place to recommend and brag about, not any more. they've trimmed the sizes of the pizza itself, obvious to a faithful customer for the past 7years. the personal presentation of your pizza even sucks now, I simply ordered a 2 topping pizza last night. it was just thrown in the box with part of the cheese and toppings laying beside the crust itself. it was then cut with large squares tapering down to itty bitty child size bites. no pride in the work anymore at all. I usually have been ordering extra cheese for the past 2 years just to equal the amount you used to get normally on their pizza. last nights pizza had at least 6 pieces with absolutely no cheese or toppings at all. just sauce and crust, I was also charged 16.50 for an extra large 18" 2 toppings. I know this seems expensive to what it used to be for the quality your getting. the sauce and crust is the best thing about their pizza now. only thing keeping me coming back. theyre comparable now to a speedway 8.00 large pizza, only with better sauce and crust. overall a total joke now. itll taste good of what you get, but youll definitely feel ripped off. used to be a loyal customer. now I think twice about it . read more
