So disappointed tonight. We have enjoyed eating at Amatos for the last 3 years. We waited 15 minutes until One of the servers finally waited on us. My wife ordered a gluten free pizza with pepperoni and cheese. I ordered pepperoni, sausage and cheese. Someone had recommended this to me because of the gluten free crust, which was surprisingly not the issue. I ordered the gluten free "pizza" and Caesar Salad. The salad came out with no detectable dressing. The server said: "Oh yea we do it traditional without Caesar Dressing...Just olive oil and vinegar." No Caesar dressing on a Caesar salad? Odd. But I ate it. I was starving. I waited thirty-five minutes for my pizza to arrive. It had almost no cheese on it. Server said: "We use fresh cheese so it's not going to cover your pizza..." Newsflash: I use fresh cheese all the time and never have that issue. She offered to remake it. Which would take another 20-30 minutes, with the same amount of cheese as before... "If you want more cheese to cover it, you'll have to pay extra.." "Can you bring me cheese to put on top of this?" "No. It won't be melty." As I was leaving, she said: "Our pizzas are dry. Our salads are dry..." What a way to be remembered! 34 bucks for dry Romaine lettuce and pizza with almost no cheese that took forever to make... Today's lesson: Make sure you bring your own cheese and dressing, cause Amatos isn't providing it...The whole meal felt like she was making excuses for why they were clearly cutting corners on everything and for why they couldn't provide you a decent pizza covered in cheese or a salad covered in dressing in under an hour. ( And under 40 bucks of course). Its lackluster at best and they aren't really willing to work with you to fix the problem. Sure, they'll remake it with the same amount of cheese and toppings as before and it take more of your time but if really want coverage on the pizza that you ordered. you'll pay extra. (Even though fresh cheese doesn't really melt enough to cover it...) This particular server was way more interested in lecturing me on why it's more traditional to put a drop of oil and vinegar on a Caesar salad than Caesar dressing! The picture below shows the way pizza came: Little to no topping, almost no cheese and almost burnt on the edges...With plenty of excuses and customer blaming to go around... Very disappointing this evening and never dreamt I would say that in the past 10 years. Wait staff very so so, the owner wasnt there which is rare. No floor manager it seemed. Waited and hour and 15 mins for food and wasnt even busy. Food was decent but not at all what it used to be. Hot quick and delicious! Back hallway was stacks of supplies and boxes of who knows what. We really enjoyed our time at Amato's. For starters we had the Italian Sausage, the meatballs and the bruschetta. The sausage and meatballs were both delicious. Actually, the sausage may have been our favorite of all we ate. I wouldn't order the bruschetta again. It was fine, but paled in comparison to everything else we had. The arugula salad was my second favorite thing. We had it with the blue cheese vinaigrette. We order two pizzas, the margarita on cauliflower crust and the Adrianne with sausage and caramelized onions suggested by our wonderful server. How a simple margarita pizza had that much flavor is a wonder! It was delicious! That being said, the Adrianne was so good that we came home and made homemade pizza to ditto it. We were in town for the weekend exploring all of what Delaware has to offer. The patio is what drew us in for a late lunch and cold drinks. We ordered the pesto bread and grilled appetizer platter. While it took quite a long time for our food to come, it was worth the wait. Both items were seasoned to absolute perfection. The honey almond beer we got was also a great choice. I don't know if the slow service is due to the lack of service staff or if it's the nature of the restaurant, but hopefully it's not something that they struggle with for long. Their patio really is a great space. It offers a great seat to take in downtown Delaware and to enjoy food and drinks. I look forward to stopping in next time I'm in town read more

We had simply a perfect evening here after Pride. Do you remember summer evenings as a kid, running around a public space outside a restaurant, maybe listening to live music and just having the time of your life? I do, and that's the vibe we had sitting out on Amato's patio watching the cars go by in busy, adorable, progressive little Delaware. Don't sleep on Delaware - it is cute, hip and full of trendy little shops and restaurants. Amato's has great wood-fired pizzas, including gourmet options they devise or custom 'zas you create yourself. Hubby and the kid both had and loved pasta dishes: carbonara and Alfredo. I had the Margherita pizza and it rocked. Pasta dishes came with generous portions of garlic bread. My pizza came out fast. Drinks were always kept full. The sun was warm and we were all happy from Pride - and we could see Delaware's rainbow Pride flags from where we sat. The pizza here is great if you like thin crust with primarily vegetable toppings. I came alone and chose to sit on the patio. The menu clearly indicates gluten-free options. Amato's in the center of town! We're here visiting "oh wuuu" and needed a quick lunch. The server was helpful getting our order in fast. We sat on the patio and watched lots of loud traffic roar by. I'm not sure what was loudest: fire truck, EMS ambulance, diesel pick ups, motorcycles, semis, or the animated locals yakking and puffing cigarettes on the sidewalk. Delaware is a much busier college town than I envisioned. But I digress. The pizza is fresh and tasty, and it is cracker thin. That is both a compliment and a complaint. We ordered the meatballs as an appetizer. They came out very quickly but were just okay. They were a bit dry. Although the appetizer came out quickly our food took quite awhile. So much so that we had to flag down our waitress and ask her to check on our food. The grilled chicken sandwich was dry and not very flavorful and the bun was extremely burnt. Almost to the point of not being able to eat it. I would have sent it back but we were in a hurry. We just moved to Delaware a week ago from northern Florida. Took our daughter and son in law to dinner here after helping us get settled. We had a great server, very attentive. After enjoying the bruschetta appetizer, we ordered 2 San Giorgio pizzas. They were amazing, hot, fresh, & flavorful. The cheesecake dessert sealed the meal. Pretty good place for pizza. I made my own, while my GF ordered one of their specialties. They come in 8" or 12" sizes, thin crust only. Overall, we thought it was just okay. The crust was crispy at the edges, soggy in the middle. Sauce was just so-so; not too much flavor. (We both had tomato sauce.) Toppings we're fine, had a good taste, but we just weren't wowed. It's fine, but nothing special. I don't want to down play them too much, b/c the pastas DID look amazing! We just thought it was more of a pub that sold pizza, than a pizza joint. My husband and I always neglected going to Amato's because it's a small place and there was always a wait (which is a good sign, I know). We finally were able to snag a seat early on a Friday night before it filled up and quickly realized why it's difficult to get here without having a wait! We were seated at a table close to the bar/wood fired pizza, which was a nice treat on a chilly day. Our server was quick and friendly to get our drink orders, bring them to us and take our order. We figured the pizza might take awhile since there were a couple large groups, so we put in an order of the meatballs. No sooner had we finished that and our pizza was delivered to our table. It was so fast and everything was so good! We'd ordered the large of the Cippolini and it was just enough to fill us up - which was kind of sad because we were looking forward to leftovers! We've since been back and sat at the bar (just the two of us at a busy time so we didn't want to take up a table), which I enjoyed because we got to watch them make the pizzas! We ordered a Cippolini (if you like French onion soup you should try this - that's exactly what it reminded us of!) and a Verdura which was so amazingly fresh tasting. It's a small place so plan appropriately and know there might be a wait BUT it's amazing so you should try it. They have a pretty large menu with starters, variety of pizzas (and option to build your own), pastas, sandwiches and more. In the summer they do have a little patio area that is covered so you can enjoy the weather without being directly in the sun. Another bonus to this place is it's one of the few restaurants open in Delaware on Monday's! And now that I've written this review, I'm craving some of their pizza again... read more

Stopped for lunch at 12:30pm. The place smells great. Real hardwood is burning in the pizza oven. Meats a Italian seasonings are wafting from the open grill. The wife and I were seated right away at table #6 and our server, Kristina, was prompt, although she said they do not have diet tea. I had to settle for unsweetened tea. We were undecided as to what to order but we finally selected the anti-pasto platter for $10.99, 8" margherita pizza for $8.99, and 8" funghi pizza for $8.99. Our order was put in at 12:41pm and we received all our food at 1:14pm. All-in-all, not a bad wait for the quality and quantity of food. We almost couldn't finish it all but I managed. $36 for a great fresh roasted meal. At the time we arrived nearly every table was full. If I could offer one suggestion to offer a complimentary pesto dip and some bread with the drinks while waiting on the food. Thanks for the lunch. read more

Amato's is located on a corner street in downtown Delaware. The outdoor seating and fountain creates a relaxing ambiance. The pizza is delicious, but the rest of the menu is overpriced and underwhelming. There's no kids menu, so you have to order a $14 adult meal for a young child, which would be acceptable if there weren't always lots of families eating there. During my latest visit, I ordered a meal that came with bread. After 45 minutes the food finally came, no bread. When I asked about it, I was told the ovens weren't working. Funny, there were plenty of pizzas out. There were two bread options offered as an alternative and I selected one. The bread came out 25 minutes later. I was surprised when the bill came and I was charged for bread. Very disappointing. My suggestion, update the menu with better/new options, improve service, add kids meals, and work on the food delivery times. read more

Amato's is hands down one of the best restaurants in Delaware, if not the best. Their wood fire pizza cannot be beat. It is so thin and comes fresh out of the oven every time. But that isn't the only good thing. Everything on the menu is great. Their pasta, subs, salads, appetizers. Some of my other favorites include the Italian sub and the pasta Amato. There are very few restaurants that are as consistently good as Amato's. The staff is friendly and most of them have been working there for years, therefore they are extremely good at their jobs. There are tons of parking options in downtown Delaware. Since this is one of the best restaurants, there is usually a wait on Friday and Saturday nights but it is worth it! They have a beautiful clay oven for wood fired pizzas (which are among the best in the city) Their pasta never disappoints (my husband's favorite is the pasta fungi with sausage)! When amato's first opened, we came at least once a month. We ordered pesto bread and a pepperoni pizza and it was really good-no burnt offerings on the pesto and the pizza was done with the perfect amount of sauce. That was then! Now (3rd times a charm?) pesto bread was burnt with that charcoal taste of burnt with very little pesto and the pizza middle was not done with watery sauce dripping off. This makes 3x of getting both this way so I had to write about it. Sadly age has not made this establishment better.
