I chose to stay at the Quail Lodge for about 3 days due to all the excellent reviews I'd read previously on Yelp and other sources. This was one instance where my instincts were not lead wrong.
This place is great! The staff is super friendly and we really loved the slow-going atmosphere of the lodge. We stayed in one of the Fairway Villas and, although a bit rustic and dated, it was a lovely experience! Having a private hot tub was a really nice touch as well, though I could survive without it.
The food at the Quail was incredible! We ate at Edgar's 3 times during our stay, once for breakfast and twice for dinner. For us, the food was THAT good. We had never tasted such fresh calamari and all the entrees (from the fish to the Quail Club) were top notch. Service at the restaurant was also very friendly and warm. The last night, we ate outside right near the golf course and it was such a tranquil experience.
Our we big fans of golf? Not at all, but the lodge offers so much more than golf. Didn't get the chance to try out the spa, but the pool was great. Very well heated and a joy to swim in.
Another thing I have to add is how much the Quail and every place else around it makes you miss your dogs. We didn't take our dogs this time, but we were quite sorry that we didn't. I've never experienced a more pet friendly hotel than the Quail, and I think that Carmel has become even MORE pet friendly in the last number of years. I was also amazed how many guests came with dogs in pairs. We will DEFINITELY be bringing our pets next time!!
So, the tops in a nutshell:
1. Very friendly and gracious staff
2. Terrific food
3. Very quiet
4. Beautiful atmosphere
5. Hot tub a nice touch
6. Parking very easy
7. Very easy and check-ins and checkout
8. We got a free blanket!!!!
Disappointments/Issues? Yeah, there were a few little pet peeves.
1. The Fairway Villa, although a great room, DOES need an upgrade which, in all fairness, we were told by the front desk. The fireplace, for example, although amazing, should have a screen in front of it. Wasn't too crazy about the fact that the fire was completely exposed to the room. Made me just a bit uneasy.
2. Second would be the TV. Now, most of us have televisions and the whole point of a change of pace is to do something different from the same, mundane things of regular life. Watching TV is often part of the mundane nature of everyday life. Although we're not addicted to television, in this age of digital revolution, it was a little disappointing to see a very old Zenith tube television on a tray that looked liked it could very easily tip right over. The television was rather small and was very dated. Now, we were aware of things like this when we reserved the room and were told that the villas aren't as "modern" as some of the other rooms. Quail Lodge, you're awesome, but come on, guys! Let's get a nice 40-inch flat screen in there! They've been out for a while now. Channel selection could also have been a bit better. We only had the tv on between 8 and 10pm or so, but when you come from a city with Comcast digital cable and a constant programming guide on your screen, it's a little 1980s-ish to have no such guide on the screen nor a wide choice of programming to choose from. For $300+ a night, those rooms should have all the major local and premium stations, and yes I am talking Starz, Showtime, HBO, Encore...all of them!
3. The in-house bar....$2.75 for a can of Diet Coke that normally costs $0.75 to $1 is beyond absurd thus why we never touched anything in that bar. $9 for a little can of cashews which would cost $3 at Trader Joes? Forget it! I know that everyone needs a profit, but your fees should cover a lot of that and at the very least, the sodas should be complimentary.
4. Shower head.....don't get me wrong, we LOVED the force of the water in the shower, but why do so many hotels insist on installing the shower head so low at around 5 or so feet high? Anyone who's shorter would still have no trouble with the shower head, but for someone who's above average in height, it's a bit distressing to have to bend down to get your hair wet.
5. Bed pillows....I've heard some say how comfortable the beds and pillows are. The King sized bed we had was definitely very comfortable, but for the record...I'm bringing my own pillows next time. Not sure what they're like in the other rooms, but the pillows in the Fairway Villa had virtually no firmness or support to them. I like pillows that offer a lot of neck and head support. I had to use 3 just to get some support at all.
Overall: I still give the Quail Lodge 5 stars. None of the criticisms I mentioned above would dramatically effect my opinion of the lodge, but they're definitely areas for improvement. Next time, we're definitely bringing our dogs and would like to stay in one of the Garden Suites!! read more
