OVERALL I was always down for a dive bar, and Gilligan's Irish Pub nearly fit the bill. I was fine with the no-frills aspect, but outside of the Guinness on tap and signage, it didn't feel quite like other Irish pubs I've been to; rather, just a regular watering hole where the regulars came in after work, shot the shit, didn't care too much of what they were drinking, and possibly husbands hid here from their wives. There wasn't a kitchen, so outside food was allowed, but I understood they sometimes had food trucks. Additionally, I wasn't sure whether or not they had a happy hour. The prices were affordable, the liquor selection was decent, and the service was easy. Plus, I preferred to support small mom & pop businesses whenever possible. OK look, I've been a customer here for years now and there have been some mishaps, sure. And there have also been people here who have been there for me when I've needed it, no doubt. But there are lines. So the other night, a Friday, a moronic patron was at Rattler saying he hates Jews and wants to kick ALL their a*ses. So I tell the barback and bartender (a three syllable name starting with 'A'). Barback says he has to hear him say it. I told him he could just walk up and ask him because the Jew hater was a proud one. I went up to the Jew hater so the barback could hear. The barback asked and the Jew hater said yes he wants to kick Jews' a*ses. They asked him to leave. Now the guy really wants to kick my ass and is waiting for me outside. But the bartender, a woman I thought was a friend, called ME an instigator for approaching him so they could hear the hate speech (you're welcome by the way). Bartender A was pissed at me because the poor thing had to kick out an antisemite because of me. I should have gotten over it and just moved away? No. She's just self serving and lazy, I guess. It takes crap like this to know who your friends are, who would hide you in their attics or who would just hand you over to the enemy. I feel badly because I have people there I consider family. But this is a bad look for any establishment and people are supposed to feel safe when they go out. I hope this is looked at seriously. The owners should be ashamed. And they have a reputation for not 86ing violent, racist, homophobic people. These owners (or at least one) also owns Over/Under Public House in downtown Burbank and there's another (I'll try to remember the name). It's important for people to know that, too. Octapharma I went on a Tuesday. First off, there should be a list of the questions asked of new donors who only look on the website to attempt self-eligibility determination. It really really REALLY sucks to wait 3 hours only to find you have to be deferred because your routine colonoscopy was not quite four months prior. To that end, I also felt strange when the nurse/assistant questioned why I had a coloscopy. Ummm, cuz I'm 50! Makes me think every donor over 50 in there is lying. Secondly, the place attracts some degenerates, for sure. I mean, yes I understand everyone who comes needs the money, myself included. But donors should just know it's not always going to be a pleasant experience with some of the others. One gangsta looking dude and his girlfriend decided it was appropriate to play video with audio on their phone, no earbuds. How arrogant, rude, and annoying for those around them. Not that the offenders care. So I figure I'll play some tunes to cover up the distracting, irritating sound of their lame speakerphone. Guess who was asked to turn off the phone volume? Yup, ME! By the assistant at the desk in the waiting room. So I said, "Sure but can we make that a rule for everyone?" That's when gangsta guy is all, "What the f&#k is wrong with you?!" The administrator said she could hear my phone and I said I could hear his and was just trying to cover the noise so I could relax for the three hour wait (this is no Gilligan's Island). And I asked, "So I can watch TV on my phone?" She said yes but "only if the volume is down enough as to not bother others." Ummm... HELLO! I was being bothered by the sound of others, lmao. Ridiculous. When I said, "I'm just trying to drown out the sound," the psycho dude said, "You should drown yourself out!". Aww, a five year old child wants his witty retort back, geezer. Point being, just make a rule for EVERYONE to adhere to that prohibits all from annoying others in the waiting room via cell phone media use. So dumb and easily avoidable. So I might not go back after my "deferral date" is lifted. Will see.... read more

I went there with four other younger women all around 25-30 years old. There was no on playing pool so we started up a game and halfway thru some jerk comes out from the bathroom and says nothing just grabs all the pool balls and slams the into the pockets. We all were like what the hell dude? We were in the middle of a game. He yelled at us and said he was next and pointed at a small chalk board. I said you were not here and no one else was either. The bartender looked at us and I said is this how you let me treat the only 5 women in your bar? He said nothing and we had even all ordered drinks. This place is completely unsafe. Avoid at all costs. I'm surprised nobody gets murdered here every day. There is no security. Patrons openly threaten other patrons. I was threatened by a white racist who didn't like my conversation with a friend and made it clear that I needed to shut my mouth or else. This was after a female staff member was threatened by a patron in a scary shouting escapade that went on forever. You couldn't pay me a million dollars to come here. Good jukebox. After a few minutes of reviewing the menu, we each placed our order at the bar, our drinks were delivered quickly while the food took mere minutes to arrive at the table. We had to approach the bar each time we ordered something, but any empty glasses and plates were collected at the table. Once we closed out our tabs, we were thanked for coming as we headed out into the night. Everything was chill and easy - thank you! PARKING (Varied; FREE this instance): I parked in the nearby original Glendale Galleria parking structure and simply walked over first to The Americana then to this place. Otherwise, there was limited parking along the main drag of Brand Blvd. and other surrounding side streets, the nearby Glendale Galleria II parking structure, The Americana parking structure that offered validation, numerous public transportation options, and rideshares - 'nuff said! ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A dark cavernous speakeasy-like place with open space, various tables and couches strewn about, and a large long somewhat decorative bar with an impressive whiskey selection displayed behind it. I appreciated the exposed brick walls which gave it that old-time feel with a few framed pictures hung on them. Minimal natural lighting came through the front doors and windows while minimal electric ceiling lights filled in rest. OVERALL It was nice to slip into The Famous Bar for the first time in over a decade, and if I found myself spending time in downtown Glendale again, I'd consider another visit. Sadly, I try to avoid the highly congested area as much as possible. I loved the fact that they had a daily happy hour (4pm-7pm) and late-night SU-TH happy hours (10:30pm-close), so there was always a deal to be found. The drinks were the main reason you came, while the food was just an add-on. The prices were elevated, but you had a good menu selection of libations (nice local craft beer list) to choose from. The customer service was easy, friendly, and straightforward. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $42.00 BEFORE any discounts/tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... Why such a long hiatus? The tap list over the last months just hasn't had anything I've wanted to drink. It's been a lot of repeats of things I've had over and over or beers that just aren't appealing -- or, in many cases, both. The Glendale Tap used to have a fairly good turnover of new brews, but lately, it seems to be in a rut. Imports are pretty much never to be seen -- like everywhere else, sadly. Even out-of-state beers are rare. And on my most recent visit, at least half of the tap list was tapped out. IPAs and sours take up so much of the list -- stouts in the cooler months -- while styles like bitters, milds, (non-India) pale ales, brown ales, bocks, amber lagers, smoked beers, etc., get little to no space on the tap list. I still love the atmosphere of the Glendale Tap, and the bartenders there are the best. Prices are fair, and there's always something at least decent to drink. But I miss those fulsome tap lists with a variety of beer styles from far and wide. More and more, the Glendale Tap is becoming too much like every other beer bar. I know L.A. beer drinkers are extremely parochial with very limited tastes (basically IPA, IPA, IPA, and IPA, with some super sours thrown in), but I would hope the Glendale Tap could return to just a smidgen of its former excellence. Until then, I probably will be visiting biannually instead of bimonthly.
