I've driven by this place over a hundred times on my way up to Glen Haven Memorial Park where my folks are buried because the timing wasn't right. Last Sunday I stayed a little longer just so I could get to the Hideaway when they were open. Am I glad I did. Great place for a Beer and a Burger. The customers were friendly and welcoming to a stranger even though it was apparent that they came there on a regular basis. This is a jewel hidden in the hills just outside L.A. by Sylmar. Thanks to my uncle for the referral. Came in mid week afternoon and the vibe is very chill. I guess they have live music on Fridays and Saturday. The food is surprisingly very tasty! We had the tacos! Several beers on tap and a full bar. The lovely lady behind the bar is awesome! I use to live in here back in the 90's' . We would ride our horses here, try to find a place to tie off (on a busy night, there would be 15+ horses tied up) sometimes extending into the parking lot where there was a tie rail. We would hang our reins inside on hooks and hand our pistols over to Roger, the bartender. Different time, different place. There would be a car load of girls from the west side looking for cowboys. There were fights and I walked home on a couple of occasions because my horse was a master of untieing herself. The place is ok. I live in the canyon so it's easy access and close to home. I really love the location and vibe of this place. There is a really cool outdoor patio, $3 Hideaway beers, any cocktail you like, a stage for live music, a pool table, food, and lots of space. They only stay open later if people are there, but because it's a bit remote for most people they usually aren't open very late. I would love to change that. They have karaoke on Friday nights that starts around 7:30pm! Turn up! Get this place popping because it's one of the coolest spots in LA and I would love if some local bands played there. It feels like you're already in a mountain town even though you're barely just up Kagel Canyon at the very beginning of the foothills. This place said it was open but nobody was there. No note, no sign saying they weren't open. We took a little drive to get there too because it was recommended to us and their hours said they were open. At least stick a note on the front door saying that you won't be opening that day. Well, we came early and were the first customers but we were treated cordially by the nice older lady in the remote premises. I should've taken pix of this great tiny gem, but I was happy and thinking about my beautiful pink man and that we were about to imbibe some vodka & soda water at 1:30pm and we had the pool table all to ourselves. It was great fun! Except when we got our pleasantly eye-catching drinks and took a sip, we were perplexed about the mysterious absence of the core ingredient of booze that would amplify our spirits. Turn off the paved road of Kagel Canyon to Don's & Cyn's Hideaway and you've now entered California Western, circa 1900's. The outside front is wooden, a wide boardwalk flanking the dusty street, a few wooden hitching posts, all that was missing were swinging entrance doors. The Hideaway dive bar is quaint, maybe 9 comfy stools, and a small second room with more seating and stage for live music. I wouldn't attach the name grill to this place simply because theres no kitchen. A small neon sign displays the grill "menu" offers 3 items: Nachos, grilled cheese and tomato soup and is easy to miss! I couldn't help but notice we were the only ones that ordered food. With that said the nachos were far from memorable, Ive had better nacho's in a movie theater. I was hungry, didn't want to waste the food & so I ATE IT and washed it down with a cool brew! :X What kept me at the bar was the music, I enjoyed listening to some Blue Grass over a Stella! It's bomb. Yep, funky bathrooms, kinda dirty, and that's why it's called a dive bar. Sunday night is Blues night and the music was wonderful. A woman played guitar and covered a Joni Mitchell tune. It was so good I dropped a 20 in the tip jar. If you're under 35 you probably shouldn't go, unless you're a musician. I made the effort to find this bar and if you drive too fast you can miss the entrance. Old wood, rustic original with a nice feel. Cindy the bartender was always on the move keeping me hydrated and cleaning at the same time. It is a clean bar. Even the house draft is good! The patrons I met, some local, others making an occasional stop, were diverse and friendly. I even ran into an old friend I haven't seen in years. I did not find any of the problems posted in 2018 regarding rude staff or billing issues or any other negatives but one can always nit-pick! Drive safe, stop in and check it out. Stopped by the hideaway with a group of 7 people (including the previous yelper Monique). It was a friday night at about 11pm and we were greeted immediatley by an extremely rude blonde bartender lady who not only hollered and pointed at my husband for his ID as if he were a dog, but also did the same to my lady friend right as we walked in. I was so distracted by the music and the ambience that i didn't realize what had just happened until she then did it to me as well. She pointed me out from waaayy in the back of the crowd and again rudely demanded my ID. Let me just repeat this in case you missed it, there were 7 of us... in a group... together... yet this woman by some crazy coincidence chose the only 3 brown people in our group and aggressively demanded ID. I get it, shes a bartender and shes required to ask. So why not everyone else who entered the place at thee exact same time? I'll never know her motives but we felt extremely disrespected none the less. We all bought drinks and beer anyway, took a seat in the empty area by the pool table and started planning our next stop. As we contemplated, the manager came up to us with an apology. Turns out he was sitting at the bar the whole time and caught the whole thing. He was extremely sincere and ultimately he is the only reason we stayed for a couple more rounds. The location is great, the bar itself is small and quiant. There's a really adorable outside area with chairs and tables. The jukebox was good and the live music was ok but none of this makes up for the horrible introduction we got here from that wretched bartender. It might be located in the larger Los Angeles metropolitan area, but you'd be forgiven for thinking it was located in Detroit, or the deep South, or any other place where misfits and rejects need a watering hole to call their own. Everything about this bar ("bar & grill" would seem to be overstating it) screams "dive." But it's a friendly dive, not a menacing, out-comes-the-switchblade kind of dive. As for the colorful cast of characters populating this friendly dive: Seated next to each other at the bar on a recent visit were a 20-something punk rocker with a sky-high, rainbow-colored mohawk...... an old guy with noticeably missing teeth..... some biker dudes..... and a well-dressed couple in their 30s. I sidled up to the bar to order a Diet Coke, and weirdly, the bartender warned me that it would be an "expensive drink" (it was $3.50). To me, that didn't seem any more or less expensive than it should be. Maybe he was being ironical? So why was I there in the first place? I had been invited to sit in on vocals at the Shuffle Brothers Blues Jam (4-6 pm on most Sundays). The players are mostly in their 50s and older, but what the scene lacks in youth, it makes up for in spades with chops and talent. By 7 pm, most of the old blues guys had already left, and there wasn't much of a crowd otherwise. But regardless, I appreciate that a place like the Hideaway exists for a misfit like me to call her own. read more

There is a 90 decibel tolerance level - and if you don't adhere to it - get ready to be chastised. And if you're in the band and you're thinking you get to drink for free all night - think again. I have to say, that i adored this place. A friend of mine and i rode our horses today about 2 miles to get to the Hideaway and then we tied them up at one of the hitching posts outside and walked in to a true L.A. time warp. Thank God a place like this still exists! It was about 2 p.m. on a Friday so there weren't too many people in there (Bonanza was on the tv) but it felt friendly and the girl working the bar was real nice. We each ordered a bowl of chili with cheese and onions and i couldn't believe my ears when she said it cost ONE DOLLAR. I thought she meant the addition of cheese and onions was $1 but the whole bowl with everything was a buck! And it wasn't bad! Since it was really cold and windy out - 50 degrees at 2 p.m. - i ordered a shot of sambuca to warm me up - $4. I'm used to paying double that at any other place so that was great too.
