Lo and behold, we found a decorated storage unit for nazism and miscellaneous BS. While the questionable "art" alone didn't bother us much, whoever was creeping around us, the person who I assume is the owner, did. It's a shame, because before we had the opportunity to acknowledge that this wasn't a place we should be in, we did find some items that were amusing, a couple of which we were prepared to buy. However, when one of my friends tried to compliment an item he had taken an interest in to initiate conversation with the employee/owner, mostly to break the eerie tension that only came from him staring at us silently from the other room, the owner/employee ignored him, only ever breaking his silence a minute later to bluntly tell the aforementioned friend to put an item down. After about 15 more seconds of receiving stares from this old man, feeling like we might become murder victims, we left, hearing the dead bolt lock behind us. The cashier offered to buy them for $10 and hit me with the line all shady thrift stores and pawn shops say "this isn't what we are looking for but if you want we can buy it a low price" knowing full well they would turn around and sell it close to retail if I sold the sneakers to the store. Not only that, but I've seen the quality of their items, especially with the clothing selection and its always lacking except for indie brands they mix in with the other clothes and sell which are extremely over priced. Its a cool store to browse around and waste time in while walking around Deep Ellum drunk on a weekend, but that's all I can recommend because the store is a waste of time. There are plenty of online shops and resellers holding on to better items, and apps like Depop to sell your items at reasonable price.

In my final attempt to give this place a chance, I walked in while a frozen faced "influencer" was ambling around Like Jack Skeleton and filming content. As she blurted out "boughten" instead of "bought" or "purchased" in front of a camera, I cringed. I casually mentioned to another girl at the counter, "You may want to let her know that 'boughten' isn't the correct word. It's bought or purchased--just FYI." The girl at the counter's response was accompanied by a scolding voice and an ugly glare. Instead of acknowledging what should be a faux pas (to say the least), she censured me with "We don't need that kind of negativity here." I interpret those words as we do nor care to cater to an educated and well-spoken customer base. Ironically, the negativity was written all over HER face. An older couple standing nearby heard the exchange, shook their heads, and said, "They clearly have no concept of grammar or what customer service is." The girls behind the counter seem to be living in some sort of designer-label dreamland in which they believe they are in a position to size up the people walking through the door. Here are some basic lessons in retail: Never size up a customer. You have absolutely no idea who is standing in front of you, what they do for a living, what they are worth, or what they can afford. Always remember what side of the counter YOU are standing on. One side "earns" a working retail wage while the other side (the customer) has leisure time and disposable income. Many of the customers walking into a consignment stores are professionals who could walk into Neiman Marcus and buy new, not used, merchandise with concierge service. Professionals shop consignment because they are discerning about how they spend their money, not because they need a retail associate deciding whether they look sufficiently affluent. Wealthier people are generally also educated in basic grammar. Ergo, poor grammar and low class behavior is grinding to them. With that said, there is no shame in working in retail. However, when you are being paid to represent a retail business, customer service is quite literally the main part of the job. Smile, be gracious, stop sizing people up, and keep your mouth shut when eloquent language eludes you. If English is your only language, and you are creating public content for a business, knowing the difference between "bought" and "boughten" seems like a fairly low bar. I've seen far better customer service with a genuine smile dropping off things at Goodwill. NEVER To Be Continued...

I called ahead yesterday specifically to ask whether this store accepted custom-made suits because another consignment company I use does not. The person I spoke with told me they did and simply said to bring them in. Today, I brought in four custom-made suits worth approximately $12,000. They were folded neatly and brought in bags. When I arrived, one employee greeted me politely and asked how he could help. I explained that I had called the day before about consigning custom suits. Another employee turned around and said, "It was me." He immediately and rudely asked what size the suits were. I explained that they belonged to my husband and I wasn't sure. He then said, "Well, first of all, you need to bring custom suits in on a hanger." I apologized and explained that I hadn't been told that when I called. His response was, "You didn't ask." That was the entire interaction. At that point, I thanked them for their time and left. Businesses are free to have whatever intake requirements they want, but basic customer service and professionalism cost nothing. Had I been told over the phone that the suits needed to be on hangers, I would have happily brought them that way. Instead, I was made to feel like I had done something wrong for not knowing information that was never communicated to me. I also own a business in the same neighborhood, so I understand firsthand how important customer service is. Every person who walks through the door deserves to be treated with respect, whether they're bringing in one item or several. The way I was spoken to was dismissive, rude, and unnecessarily condescending. It was such a poor first impression that I immediately decided to take my business elsewhere. I will also be sharing my experience when customers, colleagues, and neighbors ask for recommendations regarding local consignment businesses. If this is how potential consignors are treated before they've even become customers, I cannot recommend this business.
