I've stayed here twice and both times were only for one night and I wished they were longer! The beds are so comfy, the robes are soft, the showers have great pressure and temperature. The breakfast when I was there the first time was a lot better - quiche and baked good. This most recent visit was supposed to be a breakfast sandwich, parfait, and muffin, but the muffin was missing. Overall a nice stay and I look forward to a return visit! read more

I brought a friend her to celebrate a very special birthday. It was very quaint historical place. We found out we sat at Jackie O's favorite table. I read the reviews ahead of time so I went with the duck wontons and fried green tomatoes- they were crunchy, flavorful and accompanied by two delicious salads. They had complimentary warm roll with butter. The main entrees were the crab cakes and bbq salmon. Both came with the goat cheese grits and spinach squash gratin. These crab cakes were huge and full of sweet crab meat and the salmon was delicious too. Entrees are pretty pricey so I would only come back for special occasions. I was fortunate to have my beautiful wife surprise me with an early birthday stay here in Downtown Middleburg at The Red Fox Inn. We arrived and checked in around 4PM and were surprised to see others checking in too, they clearly do a nice business on Sundays at the Inn here. The lady who checked us in was VERY helpful, friendly and accommodating in explaining the Inn, the amenities and how to get to our room and even the best place to park. The Inn is comprised of many buildings over the 3 square block area in this part of town. The room we got (#31) was a very small house, but it was beautiful! It was very nicely laid out inside with a queen-sized bed, which was very comfy (with very comfy pillows and very clean linens), a desk and a large flatscreen TV on the wall. We arrived to our room to a bottle of bubbles and a dish of cookies - A Very Nice Touch!! The bathroom was roomy and very clean with all the typical amenities needed. Towels in the bathroom was plush and large and very clean! Something we really liked (the many don't seem to pay attention to) was that it was nice and quiet in this room! Since we were well-off the main street, on a back street, there was little to no vehicular traffic and little ambient noise. The AC unit in the room was extremely quiet and VERY efficient too, which helped us enjoy a comfy stay and restful sleep. The room also came with a couple of bottles of water too. A very nice touch was the stay included a full breakfast from their breakfast menu in the Tavern. This was truly a treat! I'll review the tavern separately, but the food and service there is just as amazing as the rest of this place. I would most definitely return sometime!! read more

I came here for brunch with a few friends. The food was good, but I wasn't wowed and was downright disappointed in their customer service/accommodation. The one thing I didn't like is that it's not al a carte. I didn't know that before arriving. If you have any sort of food allergy, medical restriction, etc, I would not suggest coming here unless you want to pay a lot for the chance to be able to eat possibly very little. This is what happened to me. I wasn't pleased. Fortunately, my friend agreed to split food with me so that I didn't pay more than $20 for food I couldn't eat anyway. At "nice" restaurants, I wouldn't normally do that, but I didn't have a choice. Even after I explained my medical issue (which I shouldn't have to do), they wouldn't accommodate the dietary requirements caused by my illness. Not cool Red Fox Inn. If you're perfectly healthy, go for it. If you're not, maybe reconsider--or spend useless money. read more

Wow!! When an amazing getaway! From the comfy bed, spacious suite, friendly staff, delicious food to all the fun things so close by, this place is a true getaway! We had an amazing dinner! The butternut squash soup, pecan crusted halibut and banana bread pudding were so flavorful and perfectly done!! We also loved the creative cocktails, wine, and port. We greatly enjoyed the town of Middleburg. Very cute shops, Christmas shop, clothing stores, and a fun distillery. During the day we enjoyed multiple wineries super close by. Really loved staying at the Red Fox Inn not only because of the very cool history, but the amazing experience they created for us. It is a place everyone should go! From start to finish, this tiny little town has a tiny little gem that everyone reading this should experience at least once. It's literally in an inn that's old and the walls are stone. Incredibly charming and romantic. We arrived with 2 children and there was no hesitation to greet us and make us feel welcome. I am sometimes ambivalent, as a family of color, to go into rural areas where confederate flags are stickers on pick-up trucks. We truly felt welcomed by the staff here and our server was delightful. I don't remember her name but give her a raise because she was attentive knowledgable, helpful and super sweet to my children. The food. Man. The food was incredible. We ordered crab cakes, a pecan and date salad, truffle fries and everything taste as good as food can possibly taste. I was so pleased. For my entree, I ordered the scallops and they were amazing. I have nothing but great things to say about Red Fox Inn. Whatever they are doing, they should keep doing because it's fantastic. read more

My delightful and considerate husband, Dave, made a reservation for us to have dinner at the Red Fox Inn. What a fantastic meal!! I ordered: Anne Bonny: Great cocktail. Duck Wontons: Ok, as a oriental, I know that cream cheese is not traditionally found in wontons. I know Mama is probably shaking her finger at me for committing the cardinal sin of eating this wonton. Buuutttttt...these wontons are fabulous. Absolutely delicious. Dave liked the flavor of the spicy plum virginia chutney. Peanut Soup: If you love peanut butter, like me, you'll like this soup. New York Strip with Goat Cheese Grits, Brandy Peppercorn Cream Sauce, and Lemon Caper Cream Sauce: The steak was nicely seasoned with salt and pepper. The Brandy Peppercorn Cream Sauce, and Lemon Caper Cream Sauce brought the steak over the top. Wowser!! The goat cheese grits were wonderful. The steak, grits, and sauces were still delicious after being microwaved the next day. Elizabeth provided great and friendly service. The tables are nicely spaced. I apologize for probably not being correct about the style of the decor, but it appeared to be decor fit for a country lodge. This is not a cheap restaurant. The Tavern at the Red Fox Inn has generally been a great place to stop in for a drink and dinner, however Sunday afternoon evening staff is sub-par. Dropped into the upstairs bar and service was horrible, bartender/waitress was on her phone and completely unprofessional. I was hoping to get dinner but service was so bad I paid the tab and left - terrible attitude, long delay before seating and taking order (we were the only people in the bar area) and she completely forgot to take my wife's order. I stopped by to see the manager on my way out and shared the experience and she was equally as dismissive. Does not reflect well on the Red Fox management team or the ownership. I used to wonder why the Oyster Bar across the street, Red Horse and the new Tremolo were always busy and the Red Fox Tavern was not, I guess now I know. I hope they make some changes and this is from a local who used to stop by weekly. Avoid this place until they make some changes. read more

The Red Fox Inn is a quaint, 18th-century hotel located in the heart of Middleburg, Virginia's horse country. I stayed at The Red Fox Inn around New Year's Eve, and it was magical. Between the plethora of fireplaces, the antique four-poster beds, and the incredibly friendly staff, it was the perfect romantic getaway for a few cold winter nights. Although it's only about 40 minutes away from the metro DC area, the Red Fox Inn is a world apart. The RFI embodies the essence of 18th-century Virginia gentry, and the long history of the place is evident throughout the Inn. Even so, it's extremely well maintained, and it feels nothing short of luxurious. The Red Fox Inn is not particularly large--it has less than 20 guest rooms/suites, making it rather intimate. During my stay, the service at the Inn was impeccable--the staff was extremely accommodating, the rooms were cleaned every day, and delicious oatmeal raisin cookies were left for us on the dresser, nightly. They went above and beyond on New Year's Eve, and even left us a bottle of La Marca Prosecco, and chocolates, as well. The treat-loving kid in me was very excited for all of the goodies! :) The Red Fox Tavern is conveniently located downstairs, and is open to hotel guests for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast is included in the hotel reservation (and is limited to hotel guests only)--where they offer a short list of delicious Southern country breakfast favorites. Lunch, dinner, and brunch on the weekends are available for purchase, as well (the Tavern is open to the public for those meals). The Inn is located in downtown Middleburg, so everything is just a short walk away. Like the Inn, the town, itself, retains it's 18th-century character--and it's a lovely place to walk around and explore. If you're looking for a quaint, historic, yet romantic place to getaway from the hustle and bustle of DC (or anywhere)--I highly suggest you consider Middleburg, and The Red Fox Inn! :) read more

We walked in through the garden very nice very pleasant walked into the bar area well lit light airy and the hostess said to us all reservations were seated down stairs . We went down stairs very small confined people brushed by us as we were eating not the most optimal thing when dining what was weird was all the empty tables that were available upstairs where we walked in no need for the ( commoners ) to be subjected to the basement . The food was good but after spending 178.00 for my wife and myself I understood clearly what the management was indicating by seating us in the basement. I would suggest to anyone not to make a reservation but if you to avoid the bottoms of the restaurant. read more

The wife and I laid low at the Inn after a whirlwind East Coast adventure (DC/NYC), and it was fantastic. Huge room, especially after spending a few nights in NYC, king bed, big bathroom, nice robes. The Inn's layout is a bit quirky, in a cool way. We walked across a parking lot, under a terrace, and across a little street to our room. We stayed two days in Room 27 and it worked perfectly for our purposes. Added bonus: free breakfast made to order. Good food, great service. Cuppa Giddy Up is next door and there's a full market within walking distance. And if you're into horses, Saddlery Liquidators is just down the road in Haymarket. Think: tack shop on steroids. The RFI&T is a great place in a beautiful town. We'll be back. read more

My husband and I enjoyed an amazing dinner at The Red Fox Inn just recently. Everything was perfect. The butter is softened for the warm rolls, the side salad was amazing and the salmon was some of the best I have ever eaten! My husband had the lamb and it was perfect. Overall, it was a fantastic meal experience, well executed, and would be a great capstone to a day of wine tasting in the region. Ambiance is romantic and cozy with old stone and wood, think spruced up colonial era decor. Service was polite, friendly and professional. Really appreciated the little touches, like how the offered to keep my wife's meal warm while she had to take care of our fussy infant. Very charming location in Middleburg, VA. Located in an historic old building on the main street of this little town in old Virginia horse country. We were told it was the longest continuously operating restaurant in American. The food was excellent! I had the scallops. They were incredible. The best scallops I've ever had! I also had the peanut soup. It was delicious. Others in my party had the salmon and they said it was the best they had ever tasted. All eight in my group had a variety of items and no one had any complaints about the quality. Many of the portions were decent sized. It is expensive, but with this quality, you get what you pay for. This is a review of the restaurant - a venerable, ageless kind of historical place in the horsey, Virginia countryside. Stone walls, a fireplace, low, heavily beamed ceilings. and a respect for the products of the lands surrounding Middleburg are the watchwords here. Also, peanuts. They're a cash crop, and a favorite base for the local soup. It was as delicious as it is rich. A cup goes a long ways to satisfy a luncheoner. Look for any ham on the menu, and order, too. It's a local specialty along with wines - In Colonial times, anyone buying land received a specific number of vines written into their deed. Wine here is a time honored tradition, just as it's expected that a local will allow unimpeded access to their private property during the Fall's fox hunts. read more

*** BRIDES PLANNING REHEARSAL DINS BEWARE*** To say "nickel and dimed" is an understatement. Ashley, the events coordinator provided us with a "set" value for our contract to reserve the Jebb Room upstairs. I made the reservation exactly 1 year out from the event and the "set" value was confirmed. When our actual contract came in I noticed that the price had conveniently gone up by nearly $1,000 (from $2,600 to $3,500!). I spoke with both Ashley and the general manager of the restaurant and they brushed it off completely saying that this was their "high volume" price and I had no other option but to pay it if I wanted to hold my reservation. The food at the RedFox in is great, the atmosphere enchanting with history... however, if you like being totally played by a bunch of crooks then this is the place for you! read more

After writing a review of some pretty less than stellar treatment from another restaurant in Middleburg, I began to reflect on some of the excellent experiences I've had at fooderies (is that even a word?) in western Loudoun. I also remember this old saying about how a happy customer might tell one or two of his friends about their experience but tell as many as ten others about a bad experience. Well, I'd like to remedy the fact that I didn't put in a good word for this wonderful establishment earlier this summer when we stopped in for dinner. So, myself and a group of friends totaling 9 people made a last minute reservation back in July after leaving one of the local Middleburg wineries. They asked us what day and time we'd be coming in, to which I answered "in about 30 minutes." The hostess on the other end didn't even pause when she told me to come on over and they'll have some tables ready. We were also directed to park around back when we got there. They had plenty of parking and had one of their staff waiting outside to direct us through an events area in the rear of the building (which took us right into a large dining area they had dedicated just for us and also saved us from having to walk around the building). Once seated, the servers were so nice and accommodating. They knew we were a little "lit" from a day of wineries but they were good sports and had fun with us. I wish I could remember names, but it's been a coupla months. What I do remember was the smiles, the service oriented attitudes and the charm of the tavern-style dining area. I also remember how tasty my appetizers and entree were. If you want some good food in Middleburg, ya need to stop in to Red Fox Inn. My guests had no complaints and actually thanked me for turning them onto this spot. A couple of them have even been back since. Came here for my anniversary with my s.o. This place does an awesome job serving local specialities with an extensive local wine list. From the moment we walked in we knew we were in for something special. The host greeted us with the biggest smile and showed us to our table even though we were early for our reservation. Kristen promptly came over and recommended an amazing bottle of cab franc from barboursville vineyards. We had the crabcake appetizer which was huge! Sooo yummy! Dinner at The Red Fox Inn & Tavern has always been a wonderful experience. Great atmosphere, delicious food, beautiful location. I enjoyed tremendously my visits in such a historic inn, one of the oldest in the USA. Brunch on the other hand, it was the opposite. The hostess has a very unfriendly attitude, telling us our favorite restaurant room is closed for lunch time and we will be seated in a smaller room that we didn't like at all, and that they only serve a two or three Prix Fix meals for brunch. The Prix Fix menu has a few good choices for salads and soups, but the main course options were not at all appealing. I usually have the crab cakes for dinner, so I wanted to try something different for a change. The Eggs Benedict or biscuits and sausage gravy are too common of a choice, nothing special. The server,who was very nice, recommended the fried chicken with redskins mashed potatoes as a main course. We all ordered the Dates and Goat Cheese salad with candied walnuts for start, and it was delicious, loved it. However, between the natural sweetness of the dates stuffed with goat cheese, caramel sugar covering the walnuts and the sweetened salad dressing, the salad left an overall delicious, sweet taste similar with having desert. We were all fine with only that salad, so when the Prix Fix imposed second course fried chicken arrived, it seemed greasy and completely unappetizing. The red skins mashed potatoes were nothing special at all either, My friend is vegetarian, and the only vegetarian choice on the menu as main course was the Fried Green Tomatoes Eggs Benedict with French Fries. Nothing special about it, in fact, quite disappointing. In conclusion, while the dinner menu is good and offers flexibility and restaurant rooms with character and better atmosphere, the brunch is very disappointing, and we will not like to repeat. Prix Fix menu has poor choices, forces one to order too much food than we need to, unhealthy choices and the atmosphere was not as pleasant. Conclusion: the brunch was more food than we needed, limited, and greasy unhealthy choices at an overpriced "Prix Fix". Never again. read more

A darling old stone building with low heavy-beamed ceilings, and dark aged wood is plenty of atmosphere for those in tract housing, 'starved' for the real thing. The comfort of sturdy thick stone walls surrounds the visitor. In the winter the table near the fireplace becomes 'hot' property. Nouveau American cuisine with a bit of fresh, maybe local, produce thrown in. I have enjoyed the meals there in recent years, though a bit pricey for the serving sizes. Though locals eat there, old Loudouners think of the Red Fox as touristy. As a local here with old roots: do not believe the sign on the building that says 'est. 1728' . Back in the day, the owner put that up to make fun of the historical hysteria of Loudoun wannabes focused on social climbing and all the locals knew it was a joke. Back then Loudoun had the likes of the DuPonts, the Melons, Symington/Harris, [the Kennedys in the 60s], and other family names you might not recognize. Extraordinarily wealthy folks, the kind that didn't flaunt wealth because that would be gauche and unkind - in other words the really rich and powerful. Well 60 years later, everyone is dead, the wealthy moved out, and no one remembers the silly joke about that sign. Now that IS funny! read more

We are hosting 2 high school exchange students from China, and thought a trip to a historic location in Middleburg would be perfect on a beautiful week day. Made a dinner reservation through Open Table for 5:45pm in the Tavern. Realized 5 minutes later that their dinner menu is more upscale than the lunch menu which I've had several times. I called the restaurant to ask about lighter fare, and the hostess who answered the phone told me that it would be best to try the Pub upstairs, as there is a room with tables and a lighter menu. Perfect. We arrived at 6pm and told the hostess we were looking for the Pub for dinner. She said, "Yes, absolutely...right up these stairs.". Our party of 5 climbed the stairs where we were greeted by 3-4 waiters who looked at us like we had 3 heads. I said, "There are 5 in our party for dinner". One female waitress with blonde hair said, "We're not serving...we are setting up for a private event on Friday night". I said, "Well the hostess downstairs just told us to come up for dinner." Blonde waitress: "Well we aren't serving. Sorry. You can eat in the bar, as she glances over to the 10 male patrons who were clearly enjoying happy hour and filled the small bar area upstairs." Me: "I have 4 high school girls with me...I don't think that is going to work." When we got back downstairs, I noticed there were only 2 patrons in the Tavern. I told the hostess: "The upstairs staff told us they aren't serving because they are setting up for a private event on Friday. Since it's not busy at all here, can we please just sit down here and order off the Pub menu?" Hostess: "No, we don't allow that." Okayyyyyyy..... Totally just got the Middleburg snobbery in our face. Welcome to America.... To the owner: your staff needs to communicate about daily events, and work on their customer service skills. read more

I'm guessing the price of a 2-course brunch of $28 is due to this being a historic landmark. I had Cesar salad and fried chicken. Salad was good, but not great. The fried chicken had a hard crust on it, and the breast was very dry. Leg and thigh were better, but really small. Gravy had way too much pepper. Wife had fish and chips. The fish was really good w/ a light flaky crust. The tartar sauce had what I think was pickled capers. Unique and good. The fries (chips) were so-so. Bourbon pecan pie... heavy on the bourbon, light on the pecans. But it was pretty good. It's just that there's better food for the price. Service was fine. The staff at the Red Fox Inn/Restaurant are always very professional and pleasant to deal with. The staff work as a team/family to make sure that everyone has a fine dining experience!
