When on business in the Denver metro area, I checked yelp to find somewhere to go for lunch. I found this amazing Peruvian spot, The Red Llama, in Lone Tree close to Park Meadows Mall! I was very impressed with the service, food, and ambiance of the restaurant. My server was very attentive, and friendly. I ordered a glass of Chicha Morada, which is made from purple corn - I usually describe it as holiday festivities in a cup. Haha. It comes with chunks of pineapple in it. For my entree I ordered the Arroz Chaufa with Pork along with a side of Salsa Criolla. The Arroz Chaufa was a good mix of salty and sweet and pairing the Salsa Criolla with it was just the right combination. Portions were pretty big and quality of the food was on point. I have been wanting to try this place since lomo saltado is a bit hard to find in Colorado. I only tried their lomo saltado and it was average to above average. I liked that the beef was tender but the sauce felt like it was lacking a certain umph. Their menu is also on the pricey side, so I'm not sure I would go back although their passionfruit cheesecake does sound good. Parking was easy in their lot. Staff were super nice. Thought this was going to be a fast casual place (the location was previously something else, and there's a Panda Express next-door), but it's kinda-sorta table service. The results, though, were a fun experience and fantastic food. The parking in front of the restaurant and its neighbors is narrow and difficult to park in. You'd almost be better off parking across the street at the Barnes & Noble / FedEx Office lot and walking. (You'll want the walk after the meal.) Reservations are recommended (at least on a Friday night, where we arrived around 6:15 and barely got a walk-in table for 3). FOOD: A reasonably ample menu of Peruvian food and drink. All that we tried was fantastic, tasty, filling, and making us want more. Also includes a bar menu of tasty Peruvian cocktails. Quite a respectable pisco sour (I tried the classic, but there were three other variants). SERVICE: Very friendly, as well as helpful -- when you could get their attention. Some free tasters of a couple of the non-alcoholic drinks were provided. When food was ordered, it came out pretty quickly. However, tables are not assigned waitstaff, menus are a QR code, and the encouraged (though not required) avenue of ordering is through the Toast app. Descriptions of the individual items in the app were lengthy, but it still felt a bit disjointed, given unfamiliarity with many of the items. AMBIANCE: Bright and festive and fun, if pretty loud. VALUE: With cocktail and an entree, we were around $45 each. That said, serving sizes were quite respectable and we brought doggie boxes home with us (took a couple of tries to get them from the waitstaff). We went there to celebrate my partner's birthday before going to our concert and we were warmly greeted by one of the servers. We were promptly seated and ordered some maracuyá pisco sours, and they were absolutely delicious. I ordered the tallarín saltado with vegetables for my food and the server surprised me by asking if I wanted mushrooms or tofu, I was very pleased to find out that they had more than one option for vegetarians. And to end the meal and continue celebrating, we had the maracuyá cheesecake (soooo delicious). One thing that probably most people don't speak of was the bathroom, the ladies bathroom was wonderfully stocked with everything a woman can need, and it's beautifully decorated. The food was like a flavor bomb exploded in my mouth! So many flavors that I hadn't hadn't had before. The restaurant is decorated in fun vibrant colors and decor, they have a photo area in the back with props and the bathrooms have anything you could need including mouth wash! Had a long travel day into Denver. So we were looking for something nearby to eat dinner at. Lomo soltado is always a good dish to have. But my expectation of it may be skewed because of the lomo soltado at the Vox in Fountain Valley. Our group if 8 was seated promptly. The owner or the manager served as samples of their maracuya and their chicha morada. Also eventually got a sample of their pisca drink. The table had complimentary cancha as well which were like popped corn but not popcorn though. Their menu is changed daily. Which is think lends to the slow ordering and confusion. You can order using their app while ur seated. But they also said, oh we'll come by and take down what you're ordering. Which is great and all, but they took a long time to get our orders. When the food came, it was all confused as to who ordered what, especially on the drinks. And the bill (divided into 4 groups) was also delayed and super confused. The waitresses was trying to handle it then the owner/manager stepped in. It was all sorts of confused. We had their lomo soltado as well as their Peruvian ceviche. The sauce on the lomo solatdo was not what I was expecting. It was ok. It has nothing on the Lomo soltado from Vox. The ceviche was good. Very citrus forward. Fresh Mahi Mahi in it. It tasted amazing. Could've drank the rest of the soup/sauce it was in. Fried plantain on the side got a little soggy but still added a nice crunch to the dish. Other things we had were the beef heart. It was soft and tender. Wouldn't have known it was beef heart if no one had said anything. Their chilcano de pisco with maracuya. It was light and refreshing. My favorite dishes were the Peruvian ceviche and octopus (incredibly flavorful and served with delicious homemade sauces -green Mint Salsa & Rocoto. This was our first time eating at this place. My husband is Peruvian so we had high expectations. We ordered chicha, causa with crab, lomo saltado and cebiche tradicional style. I loved the cebiche, and thought that the lomo was tasty as well. My husband enjoyed the lomo but didn't love it. We both were somehow disappointed by the causa. I think it needed some more citrus. I discovered that I like Peruvian food after eating here! The parking lot is shared with the surrounding businesses so it gets packed quickly! We made a reservation online and still ended up waiting but it was worth it. It was very packed and loud but that told us that it was worth it! I came after 6pm, and there was enough seating. My partner and I got seated immediately, got water and acorn nuts (not exactly sure what it is), and our server approached us at the right moments with samplers (passionate fruit and a cinnamon-infused juice). We both got Lomo Saltado (he got beef and chicken, I got beef), and it was good enough portion size that $30 was worth it. He got full (clear plate) and I got leftovers. If you are seeking the best Peruvian food in Denver, look no further than The Red Llama! As someone who has been to Peru multiple times, the plates at The Red Llama are as close as you can get. I was craving the flavors and was so surprised to see so much of what I love available. The Huancaina sauce is spot on and delicious in the Papa a la Huancaina and the causa is also just as I remembered. You get a plate of dried corn kernals too which is CLASSIC Peru!
