The main singing attraction was Deborah Stevens and her coterie of melodious singers. A lot of songs were sung like Corcovado by Kim Austin, Swax by Deb Auer, Wave D by Steph Walker and One Note Samba by Leeolive Tucker to name a few. The open mic had several musicians who played well and everyone enjoyed it immensely. Even though Jazz by Jorei is held from 8:30 pm till 12:30 am, I find that I stay for as long as possible. Today there was plenty of food and chocolate cake for Kat who is the tireless organizer of this wonderful weekly jazz session.

My concert doors opened maybe 20 min late and I was fortunate enough to see band playing on the rooftop too. I was maybe 5 min late to doors opening and all of the good spots were already taken! I guess that's New York for you. I found a little nook that no one thought of & placed myself there for the rest of the night. Highly recommend as a concert venue! The venue had either just opened or was in its soft opening phase, and some of the staff promoting the club were inviting people in from the street to watch the game. They were also offering a complimentary whiskey-based cocktail and a scoop of Van Leeuwen ice cream, so a friend and I decided to check it out. We got there towards the beginning of the game, so we were able to get seating. The space was brand new, with lots of velvet seating, projectors showing the match at both ends of the room, lush fake greenery throughout, small cocktail tables, and a long bar running along one side. It has an intimate, lounge-like atmosphere, and the sound system was very good. It made for a great sports-watching experience, and I'm sure it would be a fun experience on nights with a dj. Throughout the match, the crowd ebbed and flowed, and it didn't end up feeling too crowded. The complimentary Van Leeuwen ice cream was a nice touch (two flavors to choose from). After the complimentary cocktail, we each ordered another drink, a glass of white wine and a beer, which came to about $30 before tip/tax. Service was friendly throughout, and the bartender was attentive and quick. Overall, it was a fun place to catch the game, and I am curious whether they will continue hosting sports watch parties or if this was just for the opening weekend. Either way, I would be interested in coming back to experience the nightlife scene.

My adventure out to the Purgatory club was to see the performance of an artist from Japan named…read moreIsiliel. This show was the first of two in the USA with the second being on the West Coast. It would start on the very early side (3PM) so I headed out there via the MTA and while the ride was long, it was more straightforward than I would have first thought. There are currently quite a few clubs for shows like this in Bushwick and Williamsburg but today's adventure was going to be my very first time at Purgatory. Once onsite, I went in to meet with the artists manager since I was going to do some PiercingMetal stuff at the show. The bar part was not yet open but its a nice sized bar with plenty of chairs around it and a couple of smaller lounge areas that I really liked the vibe of. Outside in the front there were a number of small tables and chairs forming a sort of patio space. Their rather remote location probably let's them do this with relative ease and the train is right near them so if you're out there you can watch them go back to the city or deeper into Brooklyn. There was also a photo booth area downstairs if you like that kind of stuff. Upstairs is a small but rather awesome concert/event space. The stage is a tight one and I felt that the room itself would fit about 75 people. Spatially speaking, if you've a three piece of guitars, singer and drums you'd be okay but the kit needs to be small or digital and you need to be mindful of the space you have to share. This might be great for an intimate acoustic event or even a live podcast of some kind. I felt that the lighting was good for the artist I got to see and the sound was solid and a nice surprise. There is an upstairs area reachable by a gated stairwell but I think this is for tech and artists waiting to go on stage. There is also a small bar upstairs and an alcove for artists to sell merchandise. I was there to see an artist from Japan named Isiliel, and this was one of her two US shows. I didn't see any notion of food being served at this place so I apologize if they do and I didn't make note of that. There was an open Wi-Fi signal which let me do some social media between groups. Depending on who the performance is from I'd definitely come here again. I don't know the general area so cannot even determine what other options might be around here but the folks behind Purgatory have really set up a cool spot.

The video screens on the walls and ceiling playing old music and dance clips is a nice touch. I came here for a jazz night featuring CAFFEINE. A band everyone should see! The sound was perfect. The volume was nice without blowing out your ears. You felt more immersed in the groove than it being so loud you feel it in your body. The drinks were delicious and well priced. If you're looking for a gem, this is your place!
