What a nice little spot! Walked in and they were friendly at the counter. Have a weird alcohol rule/law that they have to open and bring the drink to the table so they explained that very nicely. I got the Reuben which was very tangy due to the addition of pickles to the sauerkraut. I liked it, but it was a lot of one flavor over the others. My boyfriend got the Spicy Wreck, which was spicy indeed...maybe too spicy! The Red Pepper Deli is a unique cafe located in downtown Madison. The building itself is 150 years old! Thanks to Yelp reviews and a fellow travel blogger, we decided to grab lunch here after hiking through Clifty Falls park. My husband had the special of the day, I wish I remembered the name of it but it was really good (with lots of meats and chipotle sauce!) I had a roast beef panini. They offer a variety of cold and warm sandwiches, each is served with a bag of chips for around $7-8 a sandwich. You can grab a side dish from their small deli case if you prefer that over the chips, for an additional fee. They have unlimited Pepsi fountain drinks available (just under $2) and also a beverage cooler with some drinks as well (didn't catch what those were). Sandwiches were good, nothing that "wowed" me but they were good and hit the spot after a cold hike. All are made to order so you can customize your sandwich as you'd like. They also have fresh soups every day. And catering available. The cafe was very clean (in fact, the staff was cleaning up each table as people left while we were there). read more

Food was made to order. Sandwiches were fresh and above average. For example, my veggie sandwich had freshly grated carrots on it instead of pre-shredded like you can buy at the grocery store. The kids meal grilled cheese came with a cookie, pickles and a bag of plain potato chips. It was plenty of food for my two kids (7 & 1.5) to share. We didn't have any of the speciality salads (broccoli, pasta and potato) but they looked really good. The only thing I would change is the price since a sandwich with a bag of plain chips and a pickle runs around $7-8. The unsweetened iced tea was terrific! read more

They have a huge selection of food, they cater, and they serve dinner. The service was cheerful, attentive and quick. Parking is a little confusing, but I realized that you just park wherever you want in their wrap around lot. The decorations were interesting, but not as impressive as their food. As far as the restaurant goes, it's pretty decent. However, seeking catering proved extremely difficult. I called twice and they told me that they would call me back with more info. No one ever returned the call for pricing or further details. I went once to the restaurant in person and asked about it. The person working told me that she would have the owners, that have all the details, call us. She took down our number and a note and we were still never contacted. While it may just be a miscommunication, the communication regarding catering certainly should be better handled. Whether that means a separate contact or a detailed menu or something. But the inability to even bother to return a call certainly resulted in the loss of a catering customer. I don't recommend it. And can't imagine that if I can't get one call back that the whole catering process would go very smoothly. read more

This company has a wonderful monopoly going on with a pizzeria, coffe shop and ice cream shop besides the deli. The locals affectionately refer to them as the Reds.
