Mount Shasta Hatchery - Necklaces from the gift shop Museum

    Mount Shasta Hatchery

    (10 reviews)

This past summer we visited Mt. Shasta Hatchery for the first time on their Free Kids Fishing Day…read more What am amazing experience! The Department of Fish and Game provided free rental poles, bait (worms and power bait), a link to hold the fish, then bagged and iced the fish to go when guests were done. The was a 3 fish limit per child and the ponds were so stocked the kids caught their limit within an hour. Growing up in a family that loves to fish, I appreciated this event as it gave the kids the opporunity to really learn how to fish on their own and they didn't have to wait too long before catching their first fish. Also, there were plenty of volunteers available to help bring fish in with nets and remove hooks that were tough to remove. The rules are clear, fishing is for the kids, no catch and release, you must take what you catch and there is a 3 fish limit. We saw fish of all sizes caught and were happy with what we got. The Mount Shasta Hatchery is also a great place for kids to learn about the fish life cycle, see them at different stages of life and feed the fish. Next time we visit, we hope to check out the museum. One thing to note is it is a very far walk in from the entrance to the ponds so get their early or be prepared to walk really far.

If you look closely, you can see scars and injuries the trout have from living together in such close proximity. Their constant fighting over food only leaves the strong, seasoned warriors making it all the way to adulthood (huge sizes). There is a public restroom by the parking lot. They also have a covered building where you can see the very small babies.

He took my husband and I to a great spot and the fish were there! I also felt very safe with him driving the boat. I highly recommend Mike Bogue's guide service, and will book another fishing trip with him in the near future! Best day fishing, thanks Mike.

Mike is a lifelong resident…read moreof Shasta County which makes him uniquely informed and networked with all the fishing information. His North River boat is the best laid out and designed jet boat I have ever fished out of. Extremely confortable and open design makes sure nothing interferes with getting your fish to the boat. Great top of the line tackle makes sure you are matched with the species you are chasing. Myself being left handed he even has the tackle diversity to offer my choice of which hand I want to reel with in both levelwind and spinning tackle. When fishing is tough he knows the secrets to give you the edge on the competition, many developed by him and also local history to keep the day interesting. Great for all ages male and female, he got my daughter hooked on fishing and that gives us something else to share throughout the future. He is honest about the quality of fishing and isn't just looking to take you for a boat ride. He realizes that makes repeat customers and so he can get really busy so book early especially during Salmon season. You can't go wrong and he is always my choice of a fishing guide.

We booked a houseboat at Antlers Resort over Memorial Day weekend and overall had a good…read moreexperience, though there were both highlights and some notable drawbacks. What Went Well: * Booking and Check-In: The resort staff were organized, clear, and responsive. From initial inquiries to payment reminders, everything was handled efficiently. Check-in took just a few minutes, and they helped us transport luggage and spent 30-60 minutes giving us a personal walkthrough of the boat, which we appreciated. * Boat Quality: We were pleasantly surprised to receive a free upgrade to a nicer boat. The vessel was well-equipped, featuring a hot tub, water slide, full kitchen (oven, microwave, running water)--everything was in great condition and very enjoyable. * Support and Communication: Throughout the trip, the staff were easily reachable by phone and did wellness check-ins, which made us feel supported. When we had issues, they were quick to advise and assist. * Departure and Return: Staff helped guide us out of the harbor with hand signals and came out to help dock the boat at the end of the trip, which we really appreciated. What Could Be Improved: * Instruction at Check-In: The person assigned to instruct us was clearly more mechanically inclined and admitted it was their first time training guests. The walkthrough was overly technical, hard to absorb, and not well suited for first-timers--especially with 11 people depending on us. We wish we had received the manual in advance, or even better, a simple infographic showing common procedures (e.g., starting the boat, docking, using the generator). * Safety & Docking Design Flaws: A major issue occurred when another group walking across the rocks used our mooring ropes as support, dislodging the stake and causing our boat to drift. The bridge (gangway) detached and fell underwater, and due to its weight (~50-100 lbs), we struggled to lift it back. This wasn't addressed in the manual, and the design--where the bridge is easily detached and only secured by ropes underneath the boat--feels flawed. While staff were helpful over the phone and eventually explained how to fix it free of charge, we were initially told it would cost $150, which was frustrating. This kind of issue could be much harder for smaller groups or families to handle safely. Final Thoughts: Despite a few technical and structural frustrations, Antlers Resort staff showed professionalism, courtesy, and willingness to help throughout the weekend. The boat itself was excellent, and the free upgrade and strong support helped offset the downsides. However, we recommend that they improve onboarding materials and bridge design for a smoother and safer guest experience. We'd still consider returning, but would come better prepared--and would strongly suggest that future guests request the manual early and ask about bridge/docking procedures in advance.

Most of the staff are busy working on winter repairs of the facility, so if you need someone, call first. Noone will ever answer the phone, so just leave a message. They are responsive. I rented PWC SeaDoo's. They were newer and in good condition. Expensive, but worth it. They are not good communicators, but nice friendly people. Expect to take an hour to rent anything, and another hour to return and process paperwork. It's the only game in town, on the north end of the Sacramento arm, of Shasta Lake. Overall, the marina and docks were in good condition. They have gas too.
