I mean where do I even begin... We arrived in Missoula, wandered our way over to the Rhino, and the rest is history. If every bar was like the Rhino I think the world would be a better place. You walk in and it feels like home, mix of young and old, funny stickers, slot machines, worn in pool table, taxidermy. After our first night we used the printers in our hotel lobby to print resumes and we tried to all get jobs here and leave our previous lives behind. With a warm, soft smile, the tender politely said that they're currently not hiring. So we resumed our positions from the night before and drank $4 shots of Jameson until they kicked us out. I'm a little reluctant to label the Rhino a dive bar. The Rhino is simply a great neighborhood bar located smack dab in downtown Missoula that offers a relaxing atmosphere and extensive beer and scotch selection. We came from the Stockman's, so it was just a short walk through the parking, allowing me to see the sharp-looking, red "Rhinoceros" sign on the building's side. After a few steps, you're greeted by the bar on the left and high top tables and a large booth on the right. The bar is outstanding with a wooden bar top with no rail and an angled bar overhang to a bar face with vertical wood slats. Sitting below is a short box footrest. The barstools come in many different configurations. The back bar contains the beer taps and bottle shelves with HDTVs on each end. Beyond the bar is a pool table and other games. Plenty of beers and strong drinks should make anyone you're with happy. The vibe is laid back with a mix of Missoula. Each time here, I've had excellent service. Really loved the Rhino and plan to make multiple trips any time in Missoula. read more

Went to the rhino looking for a great experience, instead I received the opposite. They only had a rank summer shandy on tap, and I couldn't ride the play rhino on the wall. I sat at the round tables outside of the bar for around an hour and a server didn't come around. There whiskey selection was the worst in the state. Went here for a few late night beers and what a surprise! Not only a great beer selection, but one of the best whisky/bourbon selections I've seen in a long time. I was salivating at the thought of trying everything. The place was packed and the service was great! A ridiculously successful effort on so many levels. You would expect that somewhere in western Montana--probably in many somewheres, you might expect--that someone would figure out how to make money running a bar. And they would get good at it. The Rhino is Exhibit A in the case for good business models in this town. First up, stuff I don't really care about: bacon vodka. Served in their already-legendary bloody marys, they make quite a combination. Other stuff I don't care about: fancy multi-ingredient shots served for the delectation of UM sorority girls and other coeds. These rolled out by the trayful both times I was here. They were clearly made with care, though I didn't listen for the names or look too closely at the ingredients. What I do care about: the beer. dozens of taps, lined up in faucet after faucet all in two rows on the barback. Clean lines. Mainstream favorites as well as imports and tons of local and regional craft beers. Big beat-up bartop. Comfortable stools. Comfortable booths and tables. Peanut shells everywhere. Friendly people everywhere, students and townies alike. Pool and shuffleboard. No fights or aggro at all either time I was here. Very friendly bartenders who know their lineup pretty well. Love this bar. It's my favorite place in the Zoo to kick back and enjoy a cold one with friends. The bartenders are not pretentious, and neither is the old school crowd...I usually avoid all bars in the downtown area on weekends because I don't like to deal with the college kids but whenever there is a concert or great event, my friends and I meet here. The beer selection is great (50 beers on tap) and the bartenders make good mixed beverages. To be perfectly honest, Anne makes the best Bloody Mary in town (besides Snowbowl); on top of that, the bar makes their own infused vodkas to use in mixed drinks. During the summer, the bar has an outdoor patio area they build up and break down every day for ultimate summer relaxation. My only dislike about the patio: they tend to break it down way to early at night for Zootown party goers. This is a great dive bar. They have one of the best selections I've found in Montana. Tip: Get the blackberry sour. It's such a fabulous beer! The Rhino is officially my favorite Pub in Montana. 50 Taps...many flavors. Brick outer walls, and Cabin-like rustic wood inside to make ya relax; and just what Taxidermerist did the work I couldn't tell ya - but an actual RHINO is forever charging right thru the brick west wall into the Bar. The Critter must be from North Dakota, cuz Montanans generally have more sense. On the other hand...I'd do whatever necessary to get to this bar too. Students tend to pack the Rhino on Thursday Pint Night. Summer geezer solftball leaguers on Tuesdays. (I'm gonna be in trouble for that!!) Perhaps the charging Rhinosceros Totem explains why the BeerTender tolerates it when my Harley pals rumble Hogs right thru the place, from back door to front, during a Bachelor party. Now, these are totally sweet down-to-earth folks. But I suppose they're called Legends for um, SOME sortof good reason(s). Lest you think H-D dudes are some kind of exclusive society, consider again the content of character. And an amazing variety of 'em...some in all kinds of dis-repair - rescued rusty from some snow-bound farmers garage - and somehow brought back to life. Montana folks aren't rich (you don't need to be) but we sure like to have fun in the great outdoors - so Montana is a natural Harley culture. These babies are well-loved and still running. The Chef on a scooter (I mean a real one: TINY) among those Harley dudes COOKS, so heck yes, do their BBQ!! But don't steal his scoot as a joke - as he'll be mad all year. (It's been done. And he deserves better, dammit!!) You hear the HD rumble all summer in Missoula, as riders head over to Surgis, South Dakota and back. White Trailers you see by the highway are Feds' listening stations. On the job, violatin yer personal civil rights w/o probable cause of ANY crime. Better watch your mouth cuz the bastards probably will arrest SOMEbody to try to justify their jobs...even tho they've been exiled to the West w/o being told Dick Cheney's asbestos deals - and Geologist's Bosses should be their chief targets. Heck, the crimes of concern to locals aren't even on their radar. Like what the Colstrip Mine and coalbed methane are doing to the bio-region's rivers. Or how badly the local Courts treat Indians. Now that stuff is CRIME. Oh, yeah, about The Rhino. DOZENS of Tasty micro-brews, on rotating Taps. Yes, you can sample before you commit to a Pint. Staff know their stuff, and can help you choose a fav. Kindly Tip well...and stay as long as you like. On a Full Moon - draft beer is just $2 a Pint... even my Guiness. Boy, O Boy, I love a full moon in Montana! It can get dang hot inside in summer, so bring sunglasses & do the back patio for outdoor air. The only things that could make me like the Rhino better would be live music and Food. There are PLENTY of places to get that within 4 blocks, as this spot is right in the downtown core. Be sure to eat dinner first, cuz you'll wanna stay, and in June it's still daylight at 10 PM, and you might not realize it till late - and ya gotta eat, drink a gallon of water, and get ya some shut-eye, & return to do it all again. Ahh the Rhino. On service I would give it a 3, beer selection a 5++, and drunkenness a 4.5. This place can be lit up one night with everyone rolling, squeezing, and jiving to get there next beer to slam. Another night it will be empty. If you look in and the place is packed its best to just start slamming beers cause its gonna get loud and cozy, and its best to be drunk. The music is house music and generally pretty good if you can hear it. On a Sunday it was mellow and they played Grateful Dead all night it was nearly a sing along in there. If you want a new beer to try the Rhino is the place that will have it. They have an extensive and properly chosen selection of beers. I would also advise to always check the board for drink specials. Out back in the summer now has tables that you can sit and drink at, but you are pretty much sitting in a dank alley, and they don't serve food. On a busy night there will always be folks out there or on the front stoops smoking. It is adjacent to the Missoula Club and the Top Hat. For one of the best greasy cheeseburgers hit the Mo Club, for live music check out whats happening at the Top Hat. Best place for peanuts, beer, and yelling indoors. O and they also have a pretty sweet shuffle board table and a couple of pinball machines its either a playboy or a terminator. read more

The rhino has TONS of beer, definitely the best selection in town. I like the crowd, although on Friday or Saturday it can be really overwhelming, lots of people packed in there. Funny thing...I never noticed the GINORMOUS Rhino coming out of the wall for years...and one day I was sitting there drinking a beer, and turned around and incredulously asked some people..."When did they get a Rhino???" They looked at me pretty funny, trying size up how serious I was. After a moment, they said "Uhh it's always been there!" Who knew?? Not me. I heart the rhino. Came here before I lived in Montana and was thrilled to go back once I moved to town. Everytime I've been in the bar back is great and the drinks - ah, happiness. Get the bloody Mary if your into that sort of thing. And there was mention of homemade huckleberry vodka ( didn't have it but would like to).
