I had a terrible experience today when getting my haircut by Brandon. I got a haircut from him a few weeks ago and it was great, I had no complaints. Today on the other hand, was anything but that. As soon as I sit in the chair I notice he's pissed and not in the mood. He cuts my hair per usual but is moody and inpatient the entire time. When cutting my sides, he asks me if I want it shorter and i tell him yes just a tad. He proceeds to look to the side and sigh heavily, clearly giving off that he was annoyed. He goes on to rush it and completely ruin the evenness and even cuts the top when I didn't ask for it to be cut. The final product was nothing what I asked for and I'd like to say that I don't expect my barber to be happy all the time, but this was different. IF YOU'RE NOT IN THE MOOD TO GIVE A HAIRCUT AND DO YOUR JOB...THEN GO HOME. Not to mention, the entire haircut took only 12 minutes just to give you the perspective. He was clearly having a bad day but I can't pity him because whether you like it or not, it's your job to come in and cut hair, not to f**k around and send people off with awful haircuts. If you weren't in the mood today, then don't come to work, as simple as that. Don't come here. read more

I believe​ this is my first ever 5-star Yelp review. This place, especially Trevor, really goes beyond what is necessary to create a great experience for their guests. To start, they accept walk-ins and take appointments which is great for the busy college student. Every time I have gotten my haircut by Trevor and every time​ I have been nothing but satisfied. He is great at what he does and is great at conversation while in the chair. They also have a haircut card, and after 6 haircuts you get a discount on your 7th haircut. They take credit/debit cards as well as cash. Added bonus, they do eyebrow waxing and I have never left unsatisfied with their services! read more

Re-visited after 2 years. Got my hair cut by David. Very happy with his cut. He also provided good advice about products to use in my hair. Trevor has been bringing in his 8 month-old puppy (French bulldog?) who is very friendly and cute. My only complaint is that I had a ton of stray hairs on my face, in my ears, and on my neck afterwards, which I wish David would've brushed or blown off with a hair dryer. Very good value. read more

Today was my first time at the Ritz Barber Shop. All 3 barbers were older guys, which is a plus. Some barbers are better than others, but years of experience help both the good ones and the bad ones. The haircut I got was alright. I think I did not explain very well what I wanted, so I did not get exactly that. I thought afterward that I should have pointed to one of the IU basketball players on a poster that was hanging on the wall to give a better idea of what I am looking for. In any case, the haircut is not disappointing, so don't take this as a criticism of the place. Finally, haircut was only $12, which is much better than what I payed last time. In summary, I recommend the place, but I will be updating my review after the next visit (wait a few months). read more

I have lived in Bloomington for nearly 15 years and for the first seven, I was testing the water at virtually every shop in town. You have to give barbershops 3 or 4 cuts before you can really judge them - so it took me a while to make my rounds to get to the Ritz. In my experience, this is the only barbershop in town that's really worth it. They listen to you, take their time, and are OK with conversation or no conversation. And at $12, you can't go wrong... Larry - the owner and the first chair - is a great barber. I've lived in several places and I would put him with the best barbers I've had in Boston, Providence, Chicago, and DC - and that's some select company. The man listens, knows how to use the tools of his trade, and is genuinely a pleasant guy to talk to. When I have a wedding or an interview, I'm willing to wait however long it takes for one of Larry's cuts. Second chair is solid too, although he's a lot quieter. Something very zen about getting a cut from him. Cracks a good joke out of nowhere, too. The guy in the third chair is new (as off November 2011) so the jury is still out. I know Larry is keeping an eye on the situation - he wants to make sure the quality of their cuts is solid across the board. Gene used to be third chair but had to retire. Looked forward to my conversations with him, and he gave a good cut, too. (If you see this Gene - you're a good man and I miss our talks. Stay well.) ANYHOW - as a rule, take reviews of barbershops in stride, especially when someone says it was their first visit. Barbers can't read your mind and most often, if you get a bad cut, it's because you didn't tell them what you wanted very well. I can't say much about this place, but hey, there aren't many other barber shop reviews. The atmosphere was kind of dull, and I did not like my haircut. It was partially my own fault, because I did not wash my hair prior to going, but nonetheless it does not seem like these guys are too good. read more
