I'm pretty low maintenance when it comes to my hair - today is February 7th, and my last cut was mid September. My hair grows fast, and I have a tendency to go from pixie to past-my-shoulders with only one or two cuts inbetween. On this occasion, I was starting to realize the strange "ombre" effect I was developing was due to shimmering golden split ends. Eeks! Time for a cut. I'm actually wanting to grow it longer, so I asked for a trim. You've heard the horror stories about trim requests which turns into six inch cuts, but thankfully this is not one of those. Kemp showed me how high the damage went, explained how much he would need to take off, and worked with my existing (grown-out) layers to keep as much length as possible while transforming my hair into a a luxuriously soft and healthy look, still with lots of length and body. Amazed! I enjoyed sitting under the gentle dryer and reading a magazine rather than the typical harsh and hurried blow out, and I also love all the "eye candy" that adorns the walls and high shelves. I appreciate the care taken to create a beautiful *and* visually interesting space, especially when quality haircuts like these do leave you sitting and looking at the walls as the transformation occurs. Josh did my haircut and I really enjoyed how he took his sweet little time to cut my hair, shampooed and conditioned it (he even gave me a head massage) and blow dried it well. This haircut was a present to my mother who can't afford one because she is the only caretaker of my grandmother and can't work. The stylist was filled with confidence. But after she was 30 min late, taking a 45 min break in the middle to the drug store to buy socks and more ban aids for an open womb, which she changed in front of us, sitting on the ground and changing her into her new socks in front of us, and never saw a hand wash. we lost confidence. The color is not was we asked for. Ashy and lifeless. The cut is not what we wanted. It's been butchered. Blunt, frizzy ends. Choppy layers. I added a photo. It's so sad that my mother a woman who cares so much for others get one afternoon to herself and gets not just a terrible cut and color but an experience that's exhausting and somewhat terrifying. Kemp is a super friendly person, we had a great chat. I felt comfortable from the moment we started talking about what I was looking to achieve. He was recommend by a friend who's hair I've always envied. While I haven't had my hair colored, my friend's hair always looks great. Cut was $35. It's hard to find a hair stylist that can contend with stylists in New York or Chicago but I can guarantee that Boomerang is a safe bet and if you don't have a stick up your @$$, you'll enjoy your experience too. read more

I had my hair cut and colored by Tamara about two months ago. This was my first large-scale coloring and I was a little nervous, but I relinquished full control to her and trusted her judgement. Her and her husband are very laid back in a great, friendly way. The salon is cute and clean, even with some parking out front! I was at the salon for a LONG time, so long she was juggling the appointments after mine in between the breaks my hair needed, but it was due to how meticulous and dedicated to my style she was. She made sure every inch of my hair was the perfect shade and cut, and I really appreciated her OCD with my hair! She even skipped lunch to fit in extra time on my coloring. Definitely someone who is dedicated to their craft. In the end, the price was extremely fair, even though it took a little longer and was more complicated than I originally planned, but it was totally worth it. I've never received so many compliments on my hair, and I'm still getting them almost 2 months after my visit...jeez! I'll be back as soon as can afford another cut and color! read more

All of us have our different opinions and wants and likes and y'know--stuff like that. I, for instance, walk into sleek, modern salons, and I feel immediately out of place with my frizzy hair I half-heartedly brushed and my frumpy skirt and shirt. The stylists at those places would probably be great for people who like sleek hair and delicate looks; for me they're intimidating, people I try to strike up a conversation with but can't quite find a topic common between us. At Boomerang I walked in. The place is eclectic -- the floors wooden, a chair made out of gradeschool stools as far as I can tell, a bumper sticker on the wall that reads "guns don't kill people, men with moustaches do." The guy owner was on the phone, but he waved at me and smiled. Tamara wandered out a moment later, sat me down, and casually got me moving. This is not a place for people who want pampering and sleekness. This is for people like me -- we more casual laid back types who don't mind being snarked at. Tamara was like "You're not a girl who likes messing with her hair, are you?" and I said "Not at all, do what you will," and she gave me a haircut that's rough around the edges and looks TOTALLY FAB rolling out of bed and ruffling it up a bit. That's what I need. If you need a sleek style or a place where they pamper you: don't go here. I'd hate that place most of the time. But if you want a laid back relaxed place, go here -- and that for me is as good as it gets. read more

After going to a couple of other local salons who didn't seem to be able to figure out my weird wavy hair, I've been coming to Kemp for several years (on a friend's recommendation) and he's done a great job. Love the cuts, love the color. I usually just tell him to do his thing, and the less direction I give the better it seems to come out. Even if you're only sort of happy with your hair, Kemp and Tamara are a multi-talented performance team who will entertain you with singing, guitar playing, and hilarious stories. Kemp has also told me that since he charges lower prices (about $10 below most comparable places), "you can bring your own tea." Sara Martin is your girl! She is funny, friendly, and accommodating. I'm really bad about last minute decisions with my hair and she always works me in. She currently does my hair(and occasionally my makes-up). I met her when I was looking for someone to do my hair and make-up for my wedding. My hair always looks like whatever photo I bring in which isn't something I've been able to say often with other stylists. I have suuuuper thick hair with natural body but she can always tame the beast. Could not recommend more highly! Also, the owners are awesome. Super fun and outgoing. I got a single process of a soft black to cover my grey spots and a really cute haircut. I went from long to shoulder length with bangs. When I called on Sat. am to discuss the blown appts., Kemp was rude and insulting and hung up on me. Tamara later claimed she was "sick." Since I went to this place based on Yelp recommendations, it's only fair I post my experience after the fact here. I went into this place with long hair, looking for a medium-length cut. I asked the stylist for a shoulder-length haircut and he immediately started cutting at chin-length (at the back of my head where I couldn't see), and by the time he made it to the sides (and I noticed) it was way too late to change anything. Needless to say I was not happy. There kind of isn't any recourse at this point other than waiting a couple months for my hair to grow out to the length I actually want. The stylist ended the session with a comment that "it's not what you think... it's what everyone else who sees you thinks of your hair" which I found quite condescending. Also the floor at the chair they seated me was covered in other people's hair, which seemed gross and unprofessional. read more

I have only good things to say about Boomerang. If you are looking for a stylist who knows what they are doing, loves what they are doing, and will go above and beyond for you (without charging you an arm and a leg) this is the place. I don't get my hair cut often. I don't have a lot of money and if I'm going to indulge on my hair I want to make sure it's done right... which is nearly impossible. My hair is thick (THICK), wavy, and before my cut went down to my chest. Even when my hair is relatively short, there is enough of it on my head to make wigs for a family of five. I literally have had a stylist at another salon (to be fair, a very pregnant stylist on a hot July day) tag team out of my cut and have someone else finish it. I'm sure stylists in my past have decided to finish before they've perfected things to their usual standards because of how long it was taking with my amount of hair, leaving me with a "satisfactory" hair cut that I'm not particularly inspired to keep up with. Tamara at Boomerang gave me a perfect hair cut. I went in with a few random photos with entirely different cuts ranging from wavy bobs to pixies to Keira Knightley in a pinned updo, and said "something like this? I don't know? I'm not scared of short edgy hair but I work in a doctors office and its best for me if it can still be soft and feminine." She heard this, saw my style, looked at the pictures I'd brought for about ten seconds and said "Okay I know what I'm going to do." An hour or so later (way longer than my appointment slot) I had exactly what I wanted but didn't have the ability to articulate. Tamara told me that she gives her clients 7 days to come in and let her know if there is anything they don't like and she will fix it for free, but I don't think that will be necessary. I love my haircut, and have been getting nothing but compliments on it. Even though the sheer quantity of my hair meant it was going to put her behind, she wouldn't rest until everything looked right, every piece textured and cut properly. The person scheduled after me was an easy going regular, and with her permission they had Kemp do her hair so she didn't have to wait on me. When all was said and done I was sure I would be charged a way extra than I was first quoted (which would have been totally fair considering how long it took), but instead she charged me just what a regular cut would be. I tried to tip enough to make up for it but I really appreciated they didn't demand it out of me. Tamara really knows hair, she might even know more about your hair than you do. She's also super cool and straightforward. The whole vibe of the place is relaxed, artsy, eclectic, fun, and all that is backed with real talent, skill, and commitment. There's great parking because Kemp and Tamara make sure no one steals their customers spots (If you park in their spots and you aren't a customer you might receive a "World's Most Inconsiderate Parker" award on your car). In summation, this is a place committed to their clients and their craft. If you are a certain type of person you are going to fall in love with this place, and even if you aren't into the vibe of the place, you might want to just go anyways because they are going to give you a damn fine haircut for damn fine price. read more

So I just moved from San Diego to Indiana and was worried about finding a suitable hair stylist. To be perfectly honest I was scared any place I went into would only have two men's cuts: Crew Cut and Shaved (hey, that's all I see on the guys here). There was plenty of parking in front, everyone inside was really nice, and the place had a cool vibe without being pretentious. My stylist, Madison, was awesome. I came in with a mop of hair and showed her a picture of me with a previous haircut I wanted to revert back to. Not only was Madison able to quickly look at the picture and know just what to do, but I would have to say she made it look better than the original. Being new to Bloomington and coming from a bigger city I was nervous about finding a new place to have my hair done. I decided to give Boomerang a shot based on other online reviews. The shop is really cool and full of some neat vintage furniture. I really liked the craftsmen tool cabinets they used to store their gear. The music was great, the people were friendly and the parking was free! I brought a picture of the hairstyle I wanted and Kemp matched it perfectly. Overall had a great experience. I had to take 1 star off as there was a bit of hair on the floor and I wish it had been cleaned up before my cut started. I will be back! read more

When I moved to Bloomington, I was very nervous about finding a new hair dresser--after all, nobody wants to spend months growing out a botched cut or color. Many places/stylists had mixed reviews; others had wait lists two months long. I can't schedule my hair appointments two months in advance--that just doesn't work for me. I recently got married near Bloomington and called a number of salons in town to find someone to do my hair for the wedding day. I ended up going with Madison at Boomerang. I cannot say enough good things about Madison. She is amazing! She met me the day before, was so responsible and professional--and reliable. And then she traveled to the hotel on my wedding day to do my hair and makeup, as well as the hair of 6 of my friends. Everyone was so impressed by her! We had traveled from New York City and Chicago--and my girlfriends are picky! But they loved Madison. And she had some diverse heads to work on--from curly to straight hair, updos and blow-outs. Madison also did my makeup and I've never had my makeup done so well. She is so talented. She saw what I was going for in terms of my makeup, veil and hair right away. She is also so affordable--easily the best deal in town. And finally, Madison is so fun and nice. She was with me and my girlfriends for nearly 6 hours on the wedding day and made it so much more fun. She was relaxed and enthusiastic and funny. I don't want to make this review too long, but I just want to make sure others know how great Madison is so they can enjoy her services in the future!! read more

I came in with high hopes based on the Yelp reviews but I was a little let down. Tamara cut my hair, her and any other staff I encountered were very nice. Also, I think the design of the store is super cool-- I felt like I stepped straight into the 70s. However, I don't think the cut was worth the price, $35, which granted is still pretty cheap for a quality salon. I showed her a picture of exactly what I wanted, and she went her own way anyways and even said to me "I like to do it my own piece of work, not exactly like the picture" I'm fine if hairstylists do this, but please tell me that before the cut! I wasn't as happy with her interpretation as I would've been with the image I showed her, but if this would have been communicated beforehand, I would have trusted her to do her own thing and just tell her which parts I exactly had to have like the picture, I guess. This was about 2 months ago that I got it cut, I showed the same picture to a girl at great clips and she got it how I wanted it. I'm not saying don't come here, I enjoyed the experience.
