Of all the food pantries in south Madison, this is the biggest and best. They always have a generous selection of viands to choose from, including fresh produce. They are truly a godsend for the poor. The only quibble that I have with them (and it is a VERY minor one) is that some of the volunteers who assist clients in selecting items are obviously referrals from the court system doing community service as a condition of their sentencing. While they behave appropriately, they don't manifest the solicitude of true volunteers who are motivated by faith and empathy. Rather than engaging with the clients, they simply process them. It is disconcerting to be treated as a product. I suppose that the society employs them for ethical reasons. However, if they are not absolutely needed, I suggest that it disengages as a vehicle for offenders' reparations and relies exclusively on volunteers. The experience is so much more pleasant.

I come to the co-op for fruits and vegetables before I go to Whole Paycheck or Willy. And while I don't buy as much wine as I used to, I've switched my allegiance from a liquor store a couple miles from my house to the co-op. Whenever we have a gathering at our house I can get whatever booze I need there. Most satisfying to me is that every dollar I spend there helps keep this invaluable local resource going. Anyone living within a mile of the store would be wise to spend more shopping time at the co-op.

I just hope that people stop spreading hate on regent market co-op when it's staff and it's management are really trying their best with the limited resources they have. If you really want to hate on a company, review bomb walmart or any megacorporation, not a cooperative serving the communit for over a century.

While they seem to be known for their sandwiches, and for good reason, they have a lot of great artisanal items rooted in Italian cooking. This includes oils, wines, sauces, spices, treats and more. And while the frozen soup is minimally acceptable everything else is trash. Their prices are minimally less than sale items at your local grocer and worse quality. Case in point. Their brisket Tri tips are more than 85% fat cap. I marinated two of these this weekend for 24 hours. Rinsed. Dry rubbed. Smoked low and slow. In this case 95% by weight measured pure fat. The 5% left was tougher than a shoe-under the same time, wood, temperature as your average lousy Costco cut that turns out fine. Tonight was so bad that for the first time in a decade I had to apologize to my family and encourage them to eat anything they could find in the house worthwhile to eat.
