This store sits in the former Whole Foods location, with a Mediterranean food truck parked outside (not sure about its hours). I first visited in May for produce but found the quality and selection underwhelming. Later, I heard they stocked some unique ice cream brands, so I went back to check them out. While I appreciate the unique selection, the prices were pretty steep--likely due to tariffs, logistics, and convenience. There was only a couple of customers on a weekday lunchtime, so it was quiet. Since I make monthly grocery runs to Chicago suburbs, I ended up getting my specialty ice creams there instead. I also browsed their hot food bar but didn't find anything that appealed to me. We were in Madison for a few days on business and stopped in the market a couple of times. Their hot bar was really good, and I just can't stop thinking about their yummy macaroni salad, so much so that I will be trying to recreate it at home really soon. I took a picture of the label just in case I forgot all off the goodness in it - perfectly cooked pasta, shreds of good cheese, celery, green pepper, scallions, and apparently some cream along with the mayo. Based on the reviews, I didn't expect to find much at this store, but I was pleasantly surprised! I loved that there are so many organic and natural options without additives, preservatives, or synthetics which is what I was looking for. Compared to other stores in Madison, I felt like the prices were at the lower end which again was a nice surprise. I also really appreciated that a lot of their products are sourced locally and that they prepare a lot of fresh meats and baked goods in house. Has everything you need and is in a convenient location. There are some good deals, but most are just a dollar or two off. The set up of the registers is what frustrates me. They are placed in such way which makes it confusing to pick a line and tough to tell which are open or not. Produce, groceries, a warm breakfast bar, sushi bar, this place is great for a quick pop in if you're hungry, or if you're needing a few things for your empty dorm fridge. Prices are higher than if you drive out to Woodman's but convenience is king. They could improve their coffee bar, as two portable carafes with no stir sticks or a garbage nearby is weak. Summary: The Market raised the bar for grocery stores in the downtown/campus area. Previously, the other grocery store options were sad, listless options, where you thought "well...at least canned goods are all the same wherever you go, right?" However, Fresh offers the variety which one now expects from grocery stores; fresh meat case, deli, sushi, rewards program, etc. The walk-in beer cooler and craft beer selection isn't on the scope of the monolith Woodman's selection, but they do a good job of selecting both local and nationwide beers. Recently, they have started offering a growler program--bring your own growler to fill or join a growler discount program. Fresh Market has a nice selection of produce and a good-sized bulk food section where I pick up my fresh Nature's Bakery granola and nuts for a reasonable price. They have fresh bread from local bakeries like Silly Yak and Stella's. The supermarket doesn't win for selection, but given its location downtown near campus it's a good one to have nearby. This grocery store is the closest on the west side of the UW-Madison campus, and it works for students in the area, and for people working in the area. I particularly appreciate the little breakfast bar and the fact that a small container makes for a decent breakfast at around $3 to $4. If you have a few extra minutes to wait for a paninni it's definitely worth the wait. Also there's a good selection of grab-and-go sushi's (just grab from the bottom where they're colder). I have to say that I don't quite understand how people in other reviews call it overpriced, but it's not some monolithic Walmart grocery joint spitting out tons of boxed processed foods. It has a nice variety and if you know you can get a popular item somewhere else, then go there, but otherwise if you want something fun and different get it here. If you are driving through and need to park, there's an underground lot in the Lucky building off of Lake Street. Today, though, I discovered the lowest price for a package of Potter's crackers ($3.99/pack) than I've found anywhere else in Madison!! And I thought $4.49/pack at Metcalfe's was a steal... Appreciate a campus grocery store. Service has consistently been A-1 BEWARE: The parking is free BUT....SO LONG as you spend X amount of dollars in the store. I don't know what it is, but I have visited on two (2) occasions where my parking was not comped and I had to pay to exit. If you know anything about the LUCKY bldg where this place is housed...everything is over-priced. We bike/walk to the store and bought too many things so the FREE Delivery was ACES and actually made it in less than an hour. So my Saturday remained on schedule and in tact. I really only shop here because of convenience. The store itself is bright and clean, but it is a fairly small grocery store and because of that, there are certain products and brands that they do not have in stock. The items they do have are often overpriced. You really have to plan ahead and shop the weekly deals. If you don't, you have to pay the price... literally. The staff is hit or miss. A friendly manager helped me find something once which was a great experience, but the cashiers are often unfriendly or just seem like they don't want to be there. One cashier was even dropping the f-bomb as I waited for her to check me out. So you would think that a grocery store would have bad "fresh" food, but this place will seriously surprise you. I came here with no expectations, and it's now my go-to for quick and easy food (especially after I spin at Cyc upstairs). Favorite item here? Definitely the sushi, which is an answer that surprises me. I am pretty picky when it comes to sushi, and it's wonderful here if you come when it's just made (so around 11AM - 2PMish). I believe it's called the rainbow roll (the roll with salmon, cucumber, and crab with avocados and spicy mayo drizzled on top), and that stuff is good! Another favorite of mine is the BBQ pulled pork. Don't expect 5-star southern pork, but for the price you pay at the hot food line, it's well worth the $5-7 you spend. I always get it with the fresh hot wedge fries on the side, and I eat it together. Yum! Give this place a chance when you stop by for beer or toiletries (or whatever you people shop for). The UW campus has been lacking a fully-stocked grocery store for some time now, and Fresh Madison Market finally stepped up and filled that need. And it has done a pretty damn good job at executing it, so I expect it'll maintain a stranglehold on this market for some time. Shopping here is just like shopping at Whole Foods or your typical suburban grocery store. They have a variety of extras that you normally only find in big chain grocery stores. There's lots of high-end organic food available. The deli has a sizeable selection of delicious lunch meats, cheeses, and salads. There's a bakery with a lot of cheap and tasty sweets, great for getting breakfast or dessert. And you can get a box of fried chicken, mac and cheese, salad, or whatever else they have as the daily special at the hot bar up front. What's really nice is that they'll also deliver your groceries to your home for free if you spend over 40 bucks in there. I easily spend that much on any grocery shopping trip. There sometimes is a lack of variety, but it's generally rare. I once tried to find myself a big bag of pre-made chicken here, and found nothing worthwhile. Fresh Madison Market is kind of expensive, but that is to be expected in downtown Madison. It's certainly a lot cheaper than getting my groceries from Walgreens or Capitol Center like I used to, and I can find everything in one place. I know I'm getting the best deal on campus here. If you have a car, it might be more worth your while to drive out to a place like Wal-Mart or Woodman's. read more

Just your average grocery store in a convenient location for downtown residents. Prices are generally on par or a little higher than other stores. There is underground parking with plenty of spots in case you're driving. I was told by the cashier that one can park for an hour for free with validation at the store. I left the store after about 25 minutes and was charged a $1. Not bad considering it was raining, but not good because the cashier said it'd be free. If you live at The Hub Madison, you're given a "Hub Club" card that gives you 15% off groceries (this deal should be good until at least 7/31/2016). read more

Mmmmm...soup and salad bar... You know how you go to some salad bars and it's an assortment of ill-chopped wilted lettuce and tomato wedges the size of your hand? Yeah, that's not how it is here. I work down the block from here and this is a standard go-to for a quick lunch to take back to my desk. The salad bar has a ton of fresh options of un-wilted meat veggies and meats. Their soups are darn good too. I highly recommend the turkey chili, clam chowder, and tomato bisque. Their hot bar is decent, although the hot wings were not that great. The grocery store is what you'd expect from a store their size. Not a huge selection but stocks more than enough ingredients to make a complicated and tasty dinner. Plus alcohol. Can't forget that to accommodate your complicated and tasty dinner. The prices are typical of most grocery stores, if not just a tad bit higher. Overall though it's a clean and fun presentation. Meh, I've experienced better reflects my exact sentiments with this grocery store that I sadly have to interact with once every couple of weeks. The prices seem drastically high compared to grocery stores farther away from campus which really discourages me from shopping here. Overpriced grocery store but the most convenient on campus. I usually go here if I don't have time to take the lyft down to woodmans. The fruits and veggies here don't last as long as woodmans(they sometimes go bad as fast as 5 days). I can spend about 20$ here for the same amount of items as I would at woodmans for 5$ probably (just to give you a price comparison). During freshman year I'd buy some of their premade food. As I used to live nearby, this place was a shop to get my grocery shopping. Located at a very strategic spot, Fresh Madison Market has been very crowded during the school days along the semesters. Some students, including myself, love to come here to get something on the way to class or after class. I realize it could be pricey, but nothing beats its strategic location, especially for those who don't drive and live closely. I will never ever understand why no one ever built a nice, big supermarket on campus. This is one of 2 nearby options and is way overpriced and offers very little variety. Sure, it has the basics but not much more. Also one time I bought gluten free fresh pasta there and got home to make it and it was moldy. Gross. The best thing about Fresh is definitely the location. Other than that, I feel like you'd be better to go to Woodman's (or even Cap. Center if you're a student without a car). The food is very pricey and the selection is awful. I almost never find what I'm looking for. Even though they are situated right off campus, they have almost no selection of typical college foods (ice cream, pizza, etc). I will hand it to them that their produce is a lot better than a lot of other locations, but it is not enough to justify the cost. The only time I will EVER go here is if I need to pick up a last minute ingredient and know I won't save money by going somewhere else. i love this store. they have reasonable prices (i've seen the same things at hy-vee that cost way more, for example) and a good selection for a smaller store. i used to work at uw-madison and it was a handy place to stop in on my way home, and now i have my groceries delivered and they are very dependable and efficient. i was originally leery about having someone else pick out my fresh fruits and vegetables, but they always do a good job and i get what i wanted and expected. they are very helpful when some sort of problem arises (like, i forgot to update my credit card info and they took care of it right away when i ordered groceries - no problem). recommended! read more

I've done a little grocery shopping here, but I generally try to avoid it because they are SO expensive compared to a place like Woodmans, or really any grocery store that isn't downtown, so they automatically get a few stars off for that. There are some high end or organic products here but it's mostly overpriced conventional stuff. It is a genius location, however, because although I do not live in this area, I recently returned to the university to take classes and this is where most of my classmates do their shopping. So I don't think they really care about pricing because lazy college students (and those without cars) frequent this place in droves and I'm sure they are making plenty of money. What I have stopped in here for on a semi-regular basis is the hot/salad bar. It's decent. The hot bar is pretty salty but you can get a variety of seemingly home-cooked food and the salad bar has a nice selection of things to pick from. The price isn't too outrageous either, I usually can get a full lunch for about $5-6. A plus is that if you are in a hurry (which I pretty much always am when I stop here), you can get your food and check out pretty quickly. If I were to rate the hot/salad bar alone I would give it three stars. When I factor the overall grocery store in, however, I've got to bump it down to 2. read more

Their customer service reps are nice and knowledgeable. You can see the food is bright and clearly marked. The management team is usually visible and always willing to jump in and get customers serviced. They aren't the best, but their consistent, you know what you can expect.
