Fishing off the shores has its challenges as most of the fishing action is deep in the channel which you'll need a small watercraft to access that area. When I first walked in, I immediately noticed all of the natural light coming into the room. It really added to the outdoorsy ambiance. The employee at the front desk was super friendly and was quick to get me set up. As for equipment, grabbing shoes was easy (pulled them out of the storage cubes to the left of the front desk), and they provided a harness as well. I'm not sure if the staff normally does the walkthrough on tying a proper knot, since my friend and his friend did it for me. Nonetheless, I do like that they have that area separate from the main climbing area. Helps to take the pressure off a little bit if you're new. There seemed to be dozens of different climbing paths to choose from, with signs at the bottom indicating the level of difficulty. I found that particularly helpful since, as a newbie, everything looked hard. Also, the people I observed and interacted with on the floor were extremely friendly. Really great vibes coming from the community here. The pricing, based on information from my friend, seemed reasonable, since it included the gym and classes. However, I live in Elk Grove, so I probably will stick to visiting this place only now and then. Recommend giving it a try, though!

However, the current reality of visiting the park is deeply frustrating, and it is no longer a pleasant or fully accessible space for local residents, families, or people looking to exercise and relax. - The most glaring issue is that the park is effectively being used as an open-air living space and informal encampment center. Benches, shaded areas, lawn spots, and surrounding perimeter spaces are routinely occupied by unsheltered individuals and their carts of belongings. - True compassion isn't enabling open substance use, street living, or leaving vulnerable individuals in triple-digit heat--it is directing people into designated shelters, treatment programs, and structured services. Allowing public recreational spaces to be taken over is unfair to both the unhoused and the surrounding community. Local residents, runners, and families with kids should not have to constantly navigate around encampments, debris, or feel uneasy about their personal safety and belongings. Furthermore, the park has developed a reputation for feeling unsafe after dark, which severely limits its usability. The park's physical infrastructure is severely neglected: ---- Benches: Many of the traditional wooden benches are worn out and badly in need of fresh paint. The hard-material benches are heavily stained, dirty, and uninviting. ---- Bleachers: The wooden bleachers near the tennis courts are completely dry-rotted. The walkways, grass, and surrounding paths are blanketed in bird feces, making large portions of the park dirty and unhygienic to walk through. The geese are aggressive--blocking sidewalks, charging, and hissing at park-goers who try to pass by. The city needs to implement active wildlife management to significantly reduce this population, as it has become a genuine health and nuisance issue. -While the rose garden looks picturesque from a distance, looking closer reveals hidden trash and litter tucked away in the landscaping and flower beds. Between the littered grounds, unmaintained areas, and territorial geese, the overall environment is deteriorating. POSITIVES: The outer jogging loop remains the only real highlight of the park. Until city officials take proactive steps to enforce public space guidelines, direct individuals into shelter options, and clean up the grounds and wildlife, McKinley Park fails to deliver on being a safe, welcoming neighborhood staple.

They also have a few native gardens around and some seating. They did have a sign up to help take care of the gardens. If you follow the trail it will land you on a small beach like setting around the American River. Around the office they have a big yard and its well kept up too. Park ranger were around and employees keeping up the place. Over all pretty good spot for a quick trip to let the kids run around or a spot to fish. Ans you can see some local WILD LIFE. There was a spot to leave a requested donation for $5 parking/visiting, not sure if someone took it or of it was removed. But not fully required too.

They do have picnic tables right out front. It's nature so of course there's a lot of trees and bushes and I think there might be pathway for a nice walk. I'm just not sure if it's a good place for younger kids to hike because if they go off the path, there could be prickly grass etc that could be unsafe. I wanted to leave an updated review for those that are considering a visit. From the pictures on yelp to what I saw, the park has changed drastically and also patrolled by park rangers more. The tube they gave us was already torn before we even used it. As soon as we got on it, it ripped completely, even though we used it normally. Instead of taking responsibility for giving us damaged equipment, they blamed us and tried to charge us for it. They first demanded $230, and only after we argued with them did they suddenly lower the charge to $170, which makes no sense if we were actually responsible. I would not recommend renting from this place. Poor customer service, damaged equipment, and unfair charges. Save your money and go somewhere else.
