The food was fresh, decent portions. Tried a few salads to sample, corn bread, cup of pork, 2 pork belly tacos. The salads were pretty good but what threw me was I didn't order black beans - I ordered bean salad. Don't get me wrong. I think the black beans were perfectly seasoned for me, and they arrived hot, hate them with the seasoned rice (perfect complement). But I was expecting a cold bean salad. Smoked pasta salad was pretty good I honestly liked the flavor believe it or not and texture was good. Same with the potato salad, I enjoyed the cubed potato salad. I liked the coleslaw. It was to my texture and taste. For me? The pork belly tacos were "eh"- agreed that it absolutely could be a personal preference - which? Makes sense since I ordered it, I'm eating it lol! Spicy, very sweet and portion was OK. I think? Next time I would like to try something else - interested to hear what anyone else thinks of the pork belly tacos. Seasoned rice was good. I purposely got it because I wanted it to go with the beans. Last but at least, was the pork, I wish they had drained it and that it wasn't so wet (water/oil)? But? I did enjoy it. Good flavor, tender, mild enough when I drained it, I made sandwiches with my own dressing, etc. Next time I would like to try their chicken and see if that is tender and flavorful, but I like that everything was a good even flavor and seasoned perfectly other than the pork belly for me. read more

Like so many long-time Charlotte favorites, The Roasting Company isn't much to look at. It's been in the same spot on Montford since I moved here decades ago and the owners haven't bothered updating the inside. It's clean but plain, with some old tables and chairs inside and on the sparse patio. But you aren't paying for ambiance. For that, go elsewhere. But if you want hearty food at a good price, The Roasting Company is your place. My favorite forever was either the chicken jaco or the chicken and queso, both served on rice that I then mix with a healthy side of steamed spinach. Then I discovered the Thursday chicken and dumplings, which is what I had today and why I am finally letting you all in on where to get excellent chicken and dumplings if Dish (off Central) is too far away. Like everything we've ordered at Roasting Company, the serving is generous and stick-to-your-ribs delicious. Don't let the size fool you, if you're going for takeout; that 16oz container is filled to the brim with a thick mix of tender shredded chicken, dumpling noodles and a dense, flavorful sauce. Mind you, all the chicken and sides I've tried there are good to excellent (except I didn't really care for the smoked cheese and pasta salad). My husband swore by the chicharrons and the chips and queso or guacamole are solid sides. So if you happen by there after the chicken and dumplings has sold out - which happens pretty much every Thursday - or it's another day of the week, you can't miss with their regular menu or their other specials. So many of our older Charlotte favorites have gone out of business or the owners retired. Heed my advice and try The Roasting Company. Long may it serve us delicious food! read more

Very tasty, very filling, just an all around comfort meal plus you get a side of cornbread. I haven't had a chance to try their wings yet but I am very eager to. Is RoCo under new ownership or management?? For the first time in 30 years, I had a bad experience there. There were three people in our party, one of whom is 93. Two of us ordered sides of spinach and our elderly friend mistakenly ordered a side of mashed potatoes. The cashier did not inform us that they were out of spinach or that they don't offer mashed potatoes. After ordering, we noticed that there were no lemons for the sweet tea. When I asked the cashier where the lemons were, she seemed perplexed and directed me to the bar. The bar was full of customers eating but no bartender ever appeared. So I then asked a very busy server for lemon and she said she would bring some to the table. She eventually brought a couple skinny lemon slices, wrapped in a napkin. Then it occurred to us that there was no silverware. So, I went back to the cashier and asked where the silverware was and she said the server would be bringing the silverware to the table with the food. When the food finally arrived (longest wait I have ever had at RoCo), the (other) server dropped it off without mentioning that the two spinach orders and the mashed potatoes were missing. When we said we were supposed to get spinach and mashed potatoes, he said 'there is no spinach' and 'there are no mashed potatoes' and seemed surprised that we wanted substitutes for the missing items. Deciding on suitable substitutes was an awkward process without the benefit of a menu but two of us succeeded in completing that process. Our 93 year friend was so confused and frustrated that he said he would just keep the sweet potatoes that had been mistakenly served to him - which turned out to be way too spicy. And the "silverware" turned out to be very flimsy 'plasticware' which was completely unsuitable for cutting up the chicken breasts - which were very dry and overcooked. So, after all the prior frustration, the three of us, especially our elderly friend, then struggled to eat the disappointing food. Hopefully, this was a one-off experience but I am worried that RoCo might no longer be the great place it used to be. read more

I was looking for some veggies to eat for dinner and stumbled upon this restaurant. There weren't many customers after the lunch hours. I ordered pinto beans, mac & cheese, greens, and mashed sweet potatoes. Initially, with the veggies served in individual, small containers, I thought I wasn't getting enough. After serving myself half o the portions, I realized the serving sizes were perfect. The vegetables were pretty good and I loved the pinto beans. Excellent experience and my first time here! As soon as we walked in we were greeted. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. Food came quick, portion sizes were great and they even had a salsa/sauce bar where you could help yourself. I got the rotisserie salad which was huge and loaded with chicken. Great place for a laid back experience with a beer and/or and rotisserie chicken dinners. We stumbled upon the place looking for outdoor dining on a Friday night and saw this place and decided to commit :) It's super casual. If you eat at the bar, it's full service. If the bar is full or you want to sit on the patio, you simply order the food at the counter (they will bring it out to you) and then go order your drinks directly at the bar. The beer selection was solid and apparently on Friday's drafts are super cheap (only $4.25 for a Wooden Robot IPA). My bride ordered the Texas Bowl ($10) and really enjoyed it. Usually bowls are mostly rice, but in this case it was light on rice and loaded with all the other ingredients. I went with the signature rotisserie chicken - all white half portion with one side ($12) of baked beans and I really loved it. The chicken was a healthy portion and perfectly cooked. One of my co-workers gets lunch from The Roasting Company on a regular basis and each time I see him eating it I ask where it's from because it looks so delicious. I finally went to get some for myself one day and now I have been bringing home The Roasting Company for dinner on a regular basis. The chicken is always perfectly cooked. I like to get a sandwich with the JACO sauce, it is so good! So far my husbands favorite it the Carolina Pork Bowl. I tried the queso chicken with squash casserole and white bean au gratin, it also came with a jalapeño cornbread muffin. Had a jalapeño pale ale draft as well. Others with me had the half of chicken, the chicken salad, and the chicken barbecue sandwich. Fresh food, tender shredded chicken, good easy vibe. I should order order from here more often. Every single time a walk away satisfied. A Charlotte must and lucky to have kme nearby. They made some wonderful renovations a couple years back and rather enjoyed sitting at the bar. Chicken here is always on point and always get with rice. Sides are on the undercard but should be the main event. Both my wife and I love the mac and cheese. The squash casserole is so good as well and I am not a huge squash fan. Many choices! Seems this spot has also become my New Years tradition to get the typical New Year's day yummy plate. I go with the Jaco Pork on Rice. For my sides typically go with black eye peas ( it is only served in Tues but the restaurant is so amazing they made an exception for NY day). Other side- you guessed it - collards. I've enjoy the rotisserie chicken and super sides at this neighborhood hang out for 30 years over which time it is evolved into as much as a casual sports bar as a diner. It does both well. As a diner, everything is freshly made, delicious and, as evidenced by my photos, served in generous portions. All chicken options are winners and I love the black bean salad. Even the condiment bar, with sweet vinegary onions, and 3 different salsas including a red hot pico, is special. Unfortunately the corn bread was not. On my last visit it was cold, dry on the inside and soggy on the outside. Of course, I do realize that's being a little picky, but hey, I love corn bread and was looking forward to it. As a bar, it is nearly open air and has a real beachy vibe. The first time visitor would be as comfortable as the regular. There's decent draft beer choices and the usual bottled beer selection. Yes, I have continued to give The Roasting Company, year after year, a try because of the talk and good reviews. However, unfortunately I do not get it. From the service to the food, everything is a let down in my mind. Last night, almost a year after my last review, I decided to try them again for their so called "great" chicken and dumplings. Okay, if you like mushy dumplings with no flavor this dish is for you. Blah, wouldn't order again. It comes with one side and cornbread. Cornbread was hard as a rock and cold, ugh! However I will say the mixed veggies were pretty good. But, honestly, how badly can you mess up stir frying veggies? This place is flying under the radar. I can't believe I didn't get around to trying it sooner. We came on a Friday for lunch and it was pretty crowded. You order at the counter and then wait for your name to be called. We were able to find a seat in the dining room which is fairly big. I decided to get the chicken and black bean combo con queso with a side of squash casserole. Everything was delicious. The chicken had a lot of flavor and queso makes everything better. The squash casserole was full of flavor too. My husband got the wings and really liked them. They have a salsa bar which is a nice touch. Since it was crowded, it took a while for us to get our food which is understandable. I highly recommend trying this place if you haven't already. We will definitely be back soon! read more

RoCo as the locals call it offers some delicious roasted chicken and other Southern specialties. The day my coworkers and I visited was chicken pot pie day. Naturally, we opted for the special and it was definitely delicious. It is piping hot, so use caution when eating. Nice large chunks of chicken breast, peas, carrots, and potatoes are baked into a medium sized aluminum take out container with a crispy crust topping everything. Super delicious, especially, with their habanero hot sauce. Will return to try their roast chicken next time! read more

Recently got take out tacos from RoCo in this new reality that we are living in. Ordered chicken and pork tacos and both (came with 2) were packed full of protein - a little hard to eat since the tacos are on the large-end of taco spectrum. Also ordered chicarones with queso, which is my new jam. Admittedly, the Roasting Company isn't the first place you would think to get tacos, but it was perfect for the alignment of the universe that was Cinco De Mayo and Taco Tuesday. I later saw some horror stories from the usual taco places (not to call them out) with long waits and pick up times. I was very happy with my unconventional tacos from RoCo. I love being able to come in and eat in this restaurant... hopefully we will be able to do it soon in the future. But it's a pretty casual place, slinging good, mostly slow-cooked food. Everything packs flavor (hello! roasting). My last visit (pre-COVID) also let me have the satisfaction of getting the last pot pie on pot pie day (Wednesday). Something about getting the "last" pot pie makes your day (unless you are the person behind the person and wanted a pot pie yourself). All of their sides are delicious... You can't really go wrong here. Probably the only downfall I can slap onto this place is your inability to choose what to get (because everything is great). read more

I've came here a bunch! The location is great and most of the locals know about this spot. The food is always great. Recently the service has been absolutely dreadful. My wife and daughter just came back today from eating there at lunch. This specific experience lasted around 45 minutes. We sat down, placed our drink orders and our daughters food order. They then came out with the drinks and my daughters food immediately. Another 30 minutes went by and nobody came to take my order nor my wife's. We couldn't find our waitress so we had to pay our tab at the bar. I'm not sure if that came down to a staffing shortage or what had happened. My wife and I had both left hungry which was extremely disappointing. Like I said previously - the food is great. The only issue I usually have her is service related. Finding someone to wait on you is extremely difficult if you request a table. I will probably come back and give them another chance because the food really is good. I am truly hoping it's a staffing shortage or something. Once we sat down at 1pm we never even saw the waitress in our section again. There were other tables that were also sat, brought drinks, and never had orders taken during the span that we were there. As far as the ambiance goes it's pretty normal. The first time I came here there was a lady on the sidewalk yelling at all the patrons at the bar and outside seating. Unfortunately she continued until an employee had told her to leave which took around 5 minutes to locate an employee to do so. That was around a year prior to todays visit so it does appear that staffing remains an issue. This could be fixed by having servers more present. read more

Unprofessional employees with bad attitudes! I ordered takeout. Went to the "pickup window" and was told by one of the guys working to go stand in line behind 5 people ordering. When I asked if he couldn't hand me my takeout bag that was in arms-length (which he had prepared), he said "I'm busy." When I finally got to the woman taking orders, she had a bad attitude and practically threw the bag at me. When I said I'd have to think about the tip next time (bad move to include in an online order), she yelled "Bye! Don't come back." Real class act. And the food isn't that good. read more

I've been coming to Roasting Company park rd for 15, maybe 20 years. It's by far one of my favorite, most consistent restaurants in all of Charlotte and surrounding. Other night after work I came and ordered a half a chicken uncut and chips with queso to go. I don't know if it's related to "post pandemic employment" problems, or it was just late, 9:00pm on a Wednesday??? What I do know, is the staff and food blew. Rude people. No chicken. Old queso, stale chips. I hope to return when it's back on track. I'd hate to loose another Charlotte staple to this pandemic. My review six years ago......is far different.
