Over the years, Bungalow 44 has become my favorite place in Mill Valley for a celebration meal -- which is funny, because when I first moved back to the area, it wasn't. Coming back to the Bay Area after living for years in a foodie town with innovative chefs like Renee Erickson and Rachel Yang and their stellar restaurants, Marin felt much quieter and smaller, and the food scene, too traditional. But consistency is an asset here, and Bungalow 44 delivers time after time. It ultimately won me over. It's now our go-to celebration spot. It's consistently good: good food, atmosphere, buzzy and celebratory on weekends, and has friendly, professional, timely service. We like coming occasionally during the week for oyster happy hour and we always reserve ahead to sit inside in the main room. Last night's meal: ahi starter, braised short rib, pork chop with wild mushrooms, good wines, and sticky pudding and a glass of tawny port were all spot on. Always delivers. read more

First off, the service here was amazing! The staff was incredibly attentive and did a phenomenal job throughout our visit. I have celiac disease, and they were very knowledgeable about the gluten-free options. They even have a dedicated gluten free fryer for the fries, which made me feel so comfortable eating here. The vibe felt upscale yet still casual. It was raining, so we sat inside, but they also have cozy outdoor seating with fire pits that would be perfect for drinks with friends. Food-wise, the truffle fries (gluten free!) were fantastic and we loved the Cali-groni cocktail. The only downside was that the short ribs were a bit tough which is why I'm giving four stars instead of five. read more

Recently visited Bungalow 44 on a Thursday night. We got there in time to enjoy some of their happy hour oysters (Miyagi). We ordered a tray since there were a few of us. They were mostly good - but mediocre shucking. I'd rather pay more and have them served clean. We had a few cocktails while were there, and I found most of them pretty underwhelming. We shared them for tasting purposes, and I don't think any of us were overwhelmed. Not particularly creative (for the price) nor well executed. I will give a shout out for Irish Coffee though - that was among the best I have ever had - so keep that in mind. It is on the desert menu. Food was good. We tried a range of dishes, family style, so we could try a wider range of plates. We had cauliflower, hummus, fried chicken, and a few other dishes. Fortunately the food was better than the cocktails! Everyone enjoyed the food, but I think the fried chicken was the winner winner! Overall a pretty good experience! When I seen they had $1 oysters for happy hour I had to make it a point to stop by while I was staying in Mill Valley! Also my favorite number is 44, deal was sealed! I sat at the bar and was immediately help by the bartender. I put my order for 6 oysters in while I checked out the menu. I had dinner planned elsewhere, I wanted to kill some time and hang out until then. Socializing at this bar with strangers was easy, everyone was so friendly and wanted to talk one another, I appreciate that! I met Barbra who said she goes every day and I witnessed dates, friends catching up, and men watching the game. It was a fun environment! They oysters were good. Mine didn't come with mignonette sauce, I had to ask the bartender for it. Unsure if that's normal or not. I also got a lesson in Oregon wine from the bartender so that was interesting. B44 is the place to go in Mill Valley on a Monday for a quick happy hour because it's open and you can usually grab a seat at the bar, inside in a booth, or outside on their redone patio with heat lamps. There is a great bar inside with helpful tenders. There is an open kitchen so you can watch the chefs do their thing. The menu pretty much stays the same and has seasonal specials like a summer green gazpacho. Everything is tasty and while not original it's just fine. The hamachi poppers are like a twist on sushi. The Brussels are yummy. They definitely stepped up their service and expectations during quarantine and sold such awesome take out buckets, to go drink kits, and more. They don't really have much of a happy hour other than oysters for a buck, but still that's not nothing. On this visit, we had the kicken chicken, oysters, and salad. read more

We have traveled every year for at least the past 5 years over 500 miles for the chicken dinner, never again! Chicken was just okay but the mashed potatoes appeared to be instant potatoes, the coleslaw was not even edible, (what was it??), the cornbread used to be a large moist piece with a honey butter, now a dried up small muffin and some sort of chili/honey sauce. The peppercorn sauce was good but glad it was served on the side bc the filet was so good on its own that I alternated bites with and without sauce. The mushrooms served with it were magical. Spinach was perfect. Overall really nicely balanced dish and so delicious. The hummus app was also so good. I thought it might have been a wasted opportunity in the appetizer section but my mom wanted it so we got it. I'm so glad we did! The hummus was interesting and pickled veggies were fantastic. Pita was not your ordinary pita. It's a huge portion. The butterscotch pudding was good but I wish it had no toffee or chocolate and a lot less whipped cream. I can't wait to come back here to try more things. So happy. read more

This is my surprise meal of the year! This is an absolute 10/10. From the service, to the location to the food, all flawless. It mine and my wife's anniversary today and we just wanted to keep it simple. We wanted good food and a nice experience, we weren't after a Michelin star level experience. Well we found exactly that at Bungalow 44. As soon as we were greeted by our server Tony (who I highly recommend asking for), I knew we were in the right place. After ordering a dozen oysters (1$ each 5-6 PM!!) we let our server know that it was our anniversary and we wanted to take our time eating a drinking as much as we could. He was more than happy to facilitate that and also give great advice. Tony was one of the best servers I've had. He could have been straight out of French Laundry. Even taking the temperature outside into account for our orders. He guided us into some amazing starters like the Hamachi Poppers and the Crazy Corn. Both were grand slams. So good. We also tried the shrimp and grits and it stole the show. For entrees we tried the Filet and the Fried Chicken. As a southerner, fried chicken is gospel to me, and this is the best fried chicken I've had in the Bay Area. Not to mention the more than generous amounts of food. This is a true hidden gem. We both ordered a cocktail and we were asked if we wanted still or sparkling water. I asked for sparkling water...I didn't ask, nor was it offered that we would be paying for a large bottle so that was slightly annoying. Plenty of restaurants offer in house sparkling water. We ordered the corn ribs. So incredibly delicious. Seriously. The quail was a VERY small portion. While I realize they are not chicken sized by any rate-we estimated there were probably 6-7 bites. Flavor was good. The salmon was also flavorful with a nice peppery arugula salad plus the starch. We shared the sticky toffee cake which was yummy. 3 cocktails, 2 dessert wines and it came to $220.00. Expected in Marin. Yes it was good, service was kind and prompt. Family took a trip to Mill Valley for a Mother's Day weekend getaway. Our vacation spot was directly across the street from Bungalow 44 so we had to give it a try (also recommended by rental owner). Ambiance was amazing, low but sufficient lighting and though a bit fancier of a restaurant they had crayons and a menu activity for the kids (2 and 4) to keep them entertained while we decided what to eat. The staff was friendly and helpful, immediately being greeted and served water with an option of sparkling (added cost). We ordered veggies for the kids, which were healthy with a wonderful dipping sauce. To try some new things we ordered three entrees and split them. Burger, lamb shank, and short ribs were all amazing. Preference here was the lamb shank and burger, though the short ribs were only last due to the high quality of the others. We ended the meal with dessert, the ice cream and beignets went amazing together and the entire family had an enjoyable and very filling adventure to this recommended spot. read more

I had high hopes for carry out here. The carry out portion sizes I was told are much smaller than in the restaurant yet the prices are just as high. I ordered cauliflower as a main course for $18 and I only got 3-4 little pieces which didn't cut it for that price. Why would I eat in the restaurant when the carry out experience was so disappointing? The buns and cornbread were extremely dry on top of everything else. read more

Went on a Friday night at around 6:30p and though we did not have reservations our party of 3 was seated right away at a fire pit outside. Our waiter Zakery was super nice and even though it was busy would occasionally come and check on us, which was perfect bc me and my girlfriends were busy catching up after some time of not being together. What we ordered: Hamachi poppers - our favorite of the night, flavorful and the crispy rice cake added a nice crunch Roasted cauliflower - very tasty! Charred rainbow carrots - cooked right and the goat cheese gave it a nice tang Shrimp and grits - pretty good Kickin' fried chicken - least favorite as the chicken was very dry I also ordered a cocktail (fo shizzle mai swizzle) which was not bad. Everything about this establishment was wonderful but the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the food wasn't anything special. First- the venue is really pretty. Located in downtown Mill Valley, they have an outdoor tent lit up with sparkly twinkle lights and heat lamps scattered throughout for warmth and comfort. We were seated indoors in a smaller room away from the main dining room with a wood burning fireplace. Dark wood and leather made the room feel warm and inviting. The drinks were definitely a highlight. I love a good hand crafted cocktail and the drinks did not disappoint! I had the Blue Crush and the Fo Shizzle My Swizzle, both of which were delicious. The service was great, and the food all came out fresh and hot. But the food to me lacked that "Oooomph". Everything tasted good, but it wasn't amazing. I had high hopes for the hamachi poppers based on reviews but those were just ok. We also had the steak tartare, Brussels sprouts, barramundi, and the bucatini and everything was good but nothing special. I would go back for the drinks and the ambiance and maybe I'll try different dishes next time. But this is definitely a solid spot to try if you're in town! read more

I had the best lamb shanks I've ever eaten in my life here. I've always had good food and incredible service at B44 - best burgers, scallops, fried chicken, but these lamb shanks last week were over-the-top phenomenal! A rich sauce with roasted interesting vegetables laced with a deep umami harissa spice that was spicy without overwhelming the succulent and tender lamb, falling off the bone. I'm sort of an Osso Buco (shanks) connoisseur. I've ordered it all over the world as a pet hobby of mine - kind of like Johnny Depp in "Once Upon A Time In Mexico" searching for the perfect Puerco Pibil. These were the best shanks in over 40 years of searching. Hands down. A beautiful restaurant too. read more

I would have licked my plate if it wasn't frowned upon in public. It's my new go-to meal for Bungalow 44. Finished with the chocolate mousse and sticky toffee pudding. I've been half a dozen times, and there's always something to enjoy - and to vex. The team behind Bungalow 44 have an apparently insatiable appetite for opening restaurants in Mill Valley, and whilst I don't hold any of them in particularly high regard, a lovely commonality between all of the restaurants in the group, including Bungalow 44, is that they unfailingly recruit and, more importantly, *empower* talented bar staff. Service at the bars is always friendly, the pours are generous, and the cocktails are invariably a delight. This isn't happenstance: the ownership team either has real chops in this area, or delegates it to someone who does. And happily, unlike their other joints, Bungalow 44 has some dishes I've genuinely enjoyed eating. Perhaps the best example is the fried chicken - which is so-so, but elevated enormously by the phenomenal accompanying mashed potato. I sincerely consider it to be second only to Joël Robuchon's, anywhere in the world. Alas, the service here is turgid. During one visit, a member of our party ordered a medium rare steak, only to be served a dense brick of seemingly roasted beef. When he politely showed the waitress and reminded her that he had ordered it medium rare, she - in front of six other people at the table - flatly told him that he was mistaken, and that he had asked for it to be well done. After some back and forth (during which everyone else at the table was exchanging puzzled looks at the open hostility on display), she returned with a better attempt, and threw in a sarcastic jibe for good measure. Not for the first time at a restaurant in the Playa/Buckeye Roadhouse/Corner Bar/Bungalow 44 quadrifecta, I had to be talked out of simply leaving immediately. On another visit, I was served bone marrow without the marrow: a solid piece of bone, overcooked to the point of being impenetrable: the medullary cavity as solid as the bone surrounding it, where instead there ought to be gelatinous oozing marrow. Despite the inarguable evidence in front of her, a waitress squinted at my plate and wondered aloud how she would know if I had simply eaten the marrow, before reluctantly bringing me something Fergus Henderson would recognize as bone marrow. It's so strange. Each time I've been, without fail, I've encountered a member of staff who says something oddly sharp to our party, or their colleague, or another patron. And then each time I've had a good drink, and some decent food, and almost - but not quite - forgotten about the hostility. All of which is a shame, because there are signs of something worthwhile here: the new patio area is much improved, there's a coherence of brand and menu and ambience not seen at other outposts from the same team, and the dishes occasionally impress. Maybe Bungalow 45 or 46 will be the one? read more

My wife and I dined at Bungalow 44 on Monday, September 8, 2025. Our review of this restaurant is a mixed bag of great and disappointing. On the great side, we received excellent service from the maitre d and bar employees. The maitre d was able to seat us on time and changed upon our request, our seating from indoor to the patio. On the disappointing side, we received poor service from our server and the meal (short rib) I ordered was very bland. Our server, a young female with dark hair never introduced herself and was less than helpful when we requested assistance with my wife allergies. The maitre d was the person who took the time with us and helped my wife to make a safe decision regarding her order. Given an almost equal amount of the good and the bad, I rated this restaurant only three stars. read more

Recently hosted a dinner here for clients and colleagues. Start to finish, our server was fantastic! I also thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere. Our group shared food throughout the evening. What an incredibly disappointing experience. I used to come here all the time but won't be doing so anymore. Our waiter, was pretty much nonexistent. While not rude, when he did show up he acted like he would rather be anywhere else than were he was. No smile. No, "hi how are you". Just, "do you know what you want to drink?" He was absent most of the evening. I was served the wrong dish, but not only did he never come check on the table to see if everything was alright, but he was nowhere to be seen. To add insult to injury, management adds a "4% "service fee" to bill. First of all, one would actually have to receive service to be charged a fee for, which we clearly didn't. Secondly, if management can't figure out how to properly price its products as presented on the menu in order to turn a profit, please don't insult your customers by sneaking a fee on to the final bill that disingenuously increases ALL of the prices! In the end, you are hurting your service staff as many folks like myself, just take the fee off of any tip. And by the time you do the math it ends up costing the server close to a third of a normal tip. read more

I wasn't sure how it was going to be because I saw a lot of four stars, so I thought good but possibly hit and miss. However, everything from the appetizers to the main course was amazing! For appetizers, we had several--cauliflower appetizer, crab cakes, hamachi and flatbread--all amazing! We shared three main courses because we had so many apps--ribeye special (melt in your mouth), fosh--forgetting the name--but it's a white fish like sea bass served over veggies--sooooo good! And then there was the best shrimp and grits ever! Beyond the food, the service was excellent... a rarity these days. the ambience was vibrant and fun, and there were different dining options in the lounge in the high seats by the bar and in the outdoor room. we were in a booth in the main part of the restaurant and it was lovely even though it was by the water stand. If I had to choose again, I might've opted for the outdoor room. It looked bright and fun and was actually covered and not truly outdoors. when you reserve, you get to choose...no bad choices. read more

What a gem. Bungalow 44 is so cute! Maybe it's the Christmas decorations. The outdoor seating is warming and actually warm with all the heat lamps. I love it. The food was good. My friends order 3 appetizers and 5 entrees for 4 people. My favorite was the hamachi poppers. Wooooahhh I can have an order myself. Well each order comes with only 3. Haha! It burst with flavors and texture. I just love it. My favorite item eaten at the restaurant. I really like the mushroom gnocchi. Normally I'm not a huge fan. The cocktails were good too. Friends of ours who live in MIll Valley introduced us to Bungalow 44. We were attracted to their menu which is international and eclectic. They have a beautiful and sunny outdoor patio, perfect for cocktails during Happy Hours when you can get $1 oysters (Sun-Thurs)! Our party of six enjoyed our foods, which included hamachi poppers, ahi crudo, fried chicken, Bucatini, Branzino. The cocktails and mocktails were also good. They do add a 4% living wage surcharge, so be aware of that. read more
