After a long hike in Muir Woods Monument, we're hungry and my family took me too this hard to find, hard to park restaurant in Mill Valley. The line was long but we got to order and had a table for 4 which was nice. There are seatings in the out door but also full. The service is great but extremely hectic, everyone is running like crazy. We ordered from the outside and the server brought the foods to our table. The prices are average $20 a plate. We ordered Fried fish tacos instead of grilled and a burrito. The chips and pico de gallo for $5 is very good, we ordered at the bar. The garlic fries are so good, every piece with great flavor and crispy. The burrito is huge and very filling, but our fried fish tacos are excellent, my wife really liked them, 2 on a plate with everything on them. It's quite messy to eat these tacos, they're big. Anyhow, compare to the Halfmoon Bay fish tacos that we liked, this is quite delicious. There are quite many beers served here but we didn't have any. First, I will say that parking here is a little bit crazy. I had to loop around a few times and finally found a place nearby. This is a hip area with surfing lessons, coffee shops and of course Hook Fish. I came here with a group, after a hike at the Tennessee Valley Trail (a beautiful hike to a beach, probably 1-2 miles away). At Hook Fish, you find a table, get in line and order your food with your table number. They bring it over (quickly!) and you get to people watch for your troubles. The dishes were a heavy mouthful, but delectable as expected. It feels East Coast West Coast to me in nature, but all pure goodness. The fried fish I had was crispy and tender, and the nachos and poke were fresh and crunchy chipped. We left with tight belts. This was a cute and tasty, casual fish restaurant! A small group of us went on a sunny Saturday afternoon. It was busy and lively (but not overly busy), and we enjoyed sitting outside on the large patio. In general, everyone enjoyed their food. I ordered the poke plate, my boyfriend ordered the two piece fish and chips, and we shared a half dozen oysters. The oysters tasted great (I thought they were briney and complemented well with hot sauce) but were small and probably not worth $4 per. I loved the flavor of the poke and the plate was a generous serving size. My boyfriend liked the crispiness and freshness of the fish and chips, but said there wasn't anything particularly special or standout. Our friends ordered various versions of the tacos and liked them, but they looked difficult to eat (small taco tortillas with heaping toppings!). We only waited about 15 minutes, but I heard some people were waiting 1.5 HOURS So I guess we caught them on a good day... or somebody upstairs really likes us. The energy here was pretty cool. Families, pups, people hanging out--it had that laid-back, "I'm just here to eat good food and enjoy the day" type of atmosphere. You really can't go wrong with that. Now, if you're doing keto like me, they're not exactly the most keto-friendly spot, but I was able to make it work with a salad and grilled fish. The vinaigrette was actually pretty decent, while the crema? ‍ It was giving... absolutely nothing. Definitely needed some flavor. The carrot habanero hot sauce was decent too, and honestly, I wasn't digging the whole dish. Was it the best thing I've ever eaten? Nah. I had Fish Hook before in San Francisco and got to try this location and the food is amazing! I got the oysters, the ling cod fish plate, and black cod tacos and my favorite is definitely the ling cod plate. The ling cod is one of my favorite fish they have there and the rice and the tomatoes on the plates are delicious!!! I wish the staff here are more friendly and the food can come out a little slow, especially on the weekends. The staff mentioned that we would have to wait for 30-45minutes for the fish and chips so I didn't get it and I wish I could if I didn't have to wait that long. I've been to the SF Hook Fish location, so it was great to visit another spot of theirs! It's more spacious with more seating -- with most tables reserved for dining, but there's other seats where you can just sip and chat with friends while drinking. We decided to dine, so we placed ourselves on their waitlist. They have a store and garden you can walk around while waiting, but they were closed when we went. So we just ordered some drinks and enjoyed the environment while chatting with each other. We didn't wait too long and got seated quicker than we thought. After sitting, you line up to order at another part of the restaurant. They have a selection of the types of protein they have available so you can order it in your tacos, burritos, etc. Our orders came out in a couple of minutes. I split a Cod Burrito with my boyfriend, and it tastes great with their Habanero Carrot sauce. But be careful, it can get quite spicy. We arrived five mins after opening and there was already a good amount of people inside! There is a small parking lot, but it does get filled super quickly. It is open seating and you go up to order. They have this housemade carrot habanero sauce on every table , and I was incredibly intrigued by it. It tasted super good! Not too spicy for me (I consider my spice tolerance pretty high). Fish of the day tacos - pretty good! There was a lot of flavor in the grilled fish. I definitely prefer this fish over the fried fish. Good balance of everything. The lime they gave me was a bit dry so I didn't end up using it much. I also found a fish bone in the fish while I was eating, so just be careful! Fish and chips - good, but not crazy good. Ambiance was super chill and inviting. Lots of outdoor, partially covered seating and a handful of indoor tables inside and by the bar. But the style of the restaurant left much to be desired. More below. The way this place works is: check in, wait to be seated, then once you have your table you can go stand in a separate line to order food and another line to order drinks. This aspect of the restaurant I think could improve it's a little clunky. 3 stars for this aspect of it. Wait on an early Sunday afternoon was 40+ minutes for 6 people to be seated. Luckily there's a cool surf/gear store next door to explore with tons of awesome items. As mentioned above after getting seated, it's another ~5-10 minutes to order drinks at the bar and ~5-10 minutes to stand in line to be able to order food. Then -20 minute wait for the food once ordered. All in all I don't think I was a fan of this set up. Fish and chips were okay/pretty good but nothing I would write home about. Oddly enough I think our table of 6 ordered five orders of fish and chips because we were that excited to try them out for ourselves. We've always wanted to try their S.F. location by the beach but it's always super packed. We also ordered a few Chips and salsa and guacamole. Salsa and guac were super bland, definitely would not recommend the salsa at all to my worst enemy. The beer selection on draft was extensive and bartenders were super friendly. Parking could be A LOT better -- we had to find parking all the way down the busy high speed road. They have their own small parking lot on site but it was packed to the brim. Originally I had this listed as a 4-star review because it truly is a nice layout and location with potential, but after writing this review I think it's more realistically a solid 3.5 star experience. We stopped by Hook Fish in Mill Valley after a day of hiking in Mt. Tam and it was bustling on a Sunday night. We put our name down and waited in our car for about 45 minutes for an inside table. There are outdoor picnic benches in the beer garden out back that are first come first serve, but it was a chilly December night so we opted to wait for indoor seating. When our table was ready, we took our number tag to reserve the table and ordered our food at the counter outside. The indoor bar area was warm and well lit, and the outdoor deck was very cute with string lights and a lively atmosphere. Definitely a great place to come hang out and have a beer. One minor inconvenience occurred when the staff forgot about one of our orders, but they were nice about it and made the food quickly when we brought it to their attention, so I won't dock a star. Built up an appetite with a hike, so we could try a few things here. The seafood plate with poke was solid. Fish and chips: the rockfish (daily fish) was to die for! Nicely crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside. However, the fries that came with it were some of the blandest we've ever had. Fish tacos were delish! They are appropriately overloaded for their price point; you'll need to use a fork. The aqua frescas looked refreshing but were also quite lacking in sweetness and flavor (coming from someone who doesn't like things too sweet). Sunday 3pm had a ~30 min wait for outdoor seating, or no wait for indoor table (which we chose). Single bathroom has a line. You order food outside and pay, then they bring the food to you. Self serve water. Seating can feel tight or close to others. Due to the location, drivers more aggressive than SF, and poor parking, accessing the parking lot can be a bit tricky. Came here after hiking in Muir Woods - been on a hunt for the best fish and chips in the Bay and heard that Hook Fish was one to check out. Got there around 3pm and was told that a table for two would be about a 30 minute wait, so it was not as bad as we thought it would be, considering that the whole parking lot (which was probably the only downside; it being made of gravel and without distinct parking designations making finding a spot incredible difficult and annoying) was full. The inside vibe was great, with tons of people drinking/eating and having a good time. When we got seated, we ended up ordering just a few oysters and a 3pc fish and chips. The oysters were pretty good and fresh, with a great vinaigrette on the side to pair with them. The fish and chips, however, were the obvious stars of the show. The fish were nice and golden, with a very crisp texture, and more importantly large and generous. The fries were nicely seasoned and plentiful. The fish was really tasty (you can choose the type of fish depending on what they have on hand, and some cost extra between $2-$10. We chose the standard option for the day: Rockfish), easily one of the better fish and chips I have had - just an incredibly simple, but well executed dish. While the tartar sauce was a good pairing, the real standout pairing was Hook Fish's own carrot habanero hot sauce with the tartar sauce and the oyster vinaigrette. I have never had something like a carrot based hot sauce, but it really works by contrasting the spiciness of the habanero with a slightly sweet carrot undertone. Strange, but it gave the classic fish and chips a unique twist that sets it apart from the competition. While eating we saw tons of different dishes fly out the kitchen as well, such as poke burritos, large portions of chips and salsa/guacamole, and fish tacos. After the experience we had that day, we will be forsure making another round back to Hook Fish to try some of their other options. Their fish and chips are a must. read more

Hook Fish has been on my list for a while but we definitely wanted to go to the Mil Valley location because it is just a bit more spacious with nice patio dining for my pup! We came around 130PM on a Sunday and I originally thought it was an order and go type of place but i guess because it was so busy, you still have to put your name down for a table and then after you're seated, you order outside and wait for your food. We ended up getting seated about a little over an hour later which was actually so long but we had nothing better to do than to wait. We made the drive from the city up. There are a few shops around where you can browse. They carry their own brands but also nice brands like Vuori, Patagonia, North Face, etc. Once we were finally seated, we ordered the fish and chips, poke, ceviche, and grilled fish tacos. I was most excited about the habanero carrot in house sauce. The battered fish was so light and crispy and probably one of the best I have tried. I only wish that it was a little saltier but the habanero carrot sauce fixed that right up. Such an interesting sauce combo but it works so well. We bought 2 bottles for home! Just FYI though, since there's probably no preservatives in the sauce, it does expire within a month. We didn't know that so we just bought 2; however, I've been putting it on everything and I mean EVERYTHING. The ceviche was so citrusy and refreshing but the star of the show for me was more so the poke. Very fresh and great flavor. I can't comment on the food because I never got the chance to eat it. After waiting in line, reviewing the menu, and finding options that worked with a temporary diet I'm on, I placed my order. Only when it came time to pay was I told they couldn't enter my order because I didn't already have a table. Apparently you're expected to secure a seat before ordering, and there was a wait. I don't understand this policy. One of the advantages of counter-service restaurants is that you order first, then find a table while your food is being prepared. That keeps things moving. Requiring people to occupy a table before they can even place an order seems like it would make everyone's meal take longer and reduce table turnover, which seems counterintuitive and inefficient. The bigger problem is that this wasn't obvious to a first-time customer. I had no reason to think that this restaurant operated differently than virtually every other casual counter-service restaurant I've been to in my life. You only find out after you've already waited in line and are ready to pay. To make matters more confusing, my husband had eaten here before and simply ordered first and found a table afterward, just like he would anywhere else. He had never encountered this policy. If it's only enforced during busy periods, that's exactly when customers should be clearly informed before they spend time waiting in line. I'm sure Hook Fish is popular with regulars who already know how the system works. For a first-time customer, though, the experience was confusing and frustrating. This is a really cool restaurant tucked away behind a building at Tam Junction. Mostly outdoor seating, but it is comfortable and protected with all wooden chairs. I know they have a location in San Francisco as well. The food is very local with a lot of fish served pub style with a lot of Latin choices. Big menu with a lot of options. One thing that I thought was unusual, but turned out to be really good and hard to stop eating was ceviche and chips, but almost a Korean style with lots of sesame oil. Unusual but good. This place on a Wednesday night was pretty full. You could tell a lot of locals go there but it's also in the corridor where tourist might stop by on the way to Mount Tam or the beach. Hook Fish is a good casual spot with more outdoor than indoor dining, so it's a place we tend to visit during good weather, which fortunately Mill Valley has plenty of. Favorite orders for us include their fish (add your preferred fresh caught fish) with nice salt flake alongside chips (fries), fresh poke with house-made tortilla chips, and grilled fish tacos with a creamy slaw with pepitas for texture and crunch. Found this beer garden while heading out to go on a hike and loved the atmosphere. The beer garden is outside with covered seating and a kitchen that you walk up and order at. Great spot if you're looking for a quick meal or a relaxing place to catch up with friends and try some local beers. We loved the grapefruit taste in the ceviche and we even threw some of the house hot sauce in to add a little spice. The poke was very tender and one of my favorite poke dishes that I have had. Fantastic food and such a cute, casual lunch spot with great outdoor seating. They were very accommodating to my allium allergy and have solid vegan options. Firstly this is an absolutely lovely place to come hang out in the evening, good (affluent) vibes and a nice outdoor space. Quite a lot of seating with many larger tables, you might have to share one if things get busy Poke and fish were great, though use sparingly! There was not enough poke for chips which sent me into a deep pit of despair UNTIL I had the fish and chips Try to eat the fish and chips sharpish, it's best when they are hot, for me I was climbing out of the pit of despair slowly so some of my food had already cooked. The fish had a nice crunch and a good inside, it was soft and not dried out. Great place albeit slightly pricier than spots over the bridge in the city. Lowkey I felt underdressed in this BEER GARDEN. Would come again if I'm over here though! read more

Delicious! We got the fish taco, grilled fish of the day plate, poke, and fries and loved it all. It was perfect after a hike! The service was a bit slow but the restaurant is very popular and busy. Came on a Saturday at 12:30 and managed to get seated for 3 at the bar, but around 2 pm, people were waiting 30-35 minutes for a table. Parked in the plaza across the street. read more

The food is outstanding and the service meets expectations. But the ordering process is absolutely chaotic. You get your drinks from one spot, you wait for your table, and you're not allowed to order until you get your table assigned to you, but then you wait in line to order. I really do love eating here because I love the food, but I visited today with a deaf friend, and this would have been absolutely a disaster had he been here with other deaf people only. The restaurant is clean, much of it is outdoors which is very nice. Also the location is an absolute chaotic disaster for trying to safely enter the parking lot, find a parking space. The location could not be worse from a road access standpoint. read more

What you see is what you would guess it tastes like. The fish rice plate is pretty much the deconstructed version of the fish tacos + rice. Honestly, mediocre at best. I also had the poke on the side (not pictured) and it just tasted like it was just mixed in only sesame oil. I couldn't even taste much of the fish at that point. If you decide to come, I would only get the fish & chips because that was the only thing that was actually really good. Lightly battered, super crispy, fresh fried fish! If I only had this, I would've given this place a 5/5. But because I had three other items that were just okay, not to mention we ended up having to wait 45+ minutes for a dine in order, did not serve this place well. All our other friends got their food within 5 min so idk what happened to ours. Can't say that I would recommend this place or want to really come back. read more
