The other half went with fish they recognized like salmon -- which was also good but good salmon can found in many places. I've been to the SF Hook Fish location, so it was great to visit another spot of theirs! It's more spacious with more seating -- with most tables reserved for dining, but there's other seats where you can just sip and chat with friends while drinking. We decided to dine, so we placed ourselves on their waitlist. They have a store and garden you can walk around while waiting, but they were closed when we went. So we just ordered some drinks and enjoyed the environment while chatting with each other. We didn't wait too long and got seated quicker than we thought. After sitting, you line up to order at another part of the restaurant. They have a selection of the types of protein they have available so you can order it in your tacos, burritos, etc. Our orders came out in a couple of minutes. I split a Cod Burrito with my boyfriend, and it tastes great with their Habanero Carrot sauce. But be careful, it can get quite spicy. We also ordered their Ceviche as an appetizer, and it's a great portion to share between 2 people before eating the main dish. I always enjoy the food I order from Hook Fish! read more

Hook Fish has been on my list for a while but we definitely wanted to go to the Mil Valley location because it is just a bit more spacious with nice patio dining for my pup! We came around 130PM on a Sunday and I originally thought it was an order and go type of place but i guess because it was so busy, you still have to put your name down for a table and then after you're seated, you order outside and wait for your food. We ended up getting seated about a little over an hour later which was actually so long but we had nothing better to do than to wait. We made the drive from the city up. There are a few shops around where you can browse. They carry their own brands but also nice brands like Vuori, Patagonia, North Face, etc. Once we were finally seated, we ordered the fish and chips, poke, ceviche, and grilled fish tacos. I was most excited about the habanero carrot in house sauce. The battered fish was so light and crispy and probably one of the best I have tried. I only wish that it was a little saltier but the habanero carrot sauce fixed that right up. Such an interesting sauce combo but it works so well. We bought 2 bottles for home! Just FYI though, since there's probably no preservatives in the sauce, it does expire within a month. We didn't know that so we just bought 2; however, I've been putting it on everything and I mean EVERYTHING. The ceviche was so citrusy and refreshing but the star of the show for me was more so the poke. Very fresh and great flavor. We arrived five mins after opening and there was already a good amount of people inside! There is a small parking lot, but it does get filled super quickly. It is open seating and you go up to order. They bring the food to you! You will have to go to the bar to order drinks. We ended up getting the fish of the day tacos, chips and ceviche, and fish and chips. They have this housemade carrot habanero sauce on every table , and I was incredibly intrigued by it. It tasted super good! Not too spicy for me (I consider my spice tolerance pretty high). Fish of the day tacos - pretty good! There was a lot of flavor in the grilled fish. I definitely prefer this fish over the fried fish. Good balance of everything. The lime they gave me was a bit dry so I didn't end up using it much. I also found a fish bone in the fish while I was eating, so just be careful! Fish and chips - good, but not crazy good. I feel like it lacked a bit of flavor, however, the fry batter of it was super well done. Super crispy! The fries underneath were delicious as well (seasoned). Chips and ceviche - this was very good! Built up an appetite with a hike, so we could try a few things here. The seafood plate with poke was solid. Fish and chips: the rockfish (daily fish) was to die for! Nicely crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside. However, the fries that came with it were some of the blandest we've ever had. Fish tacos were delish! They are appropriately overloaded for their price point; you'll need to use a fork. The aqua frescas looked refreshing but were also quite lacking in sweetness and flavor (coming from someone who doesn't like things too sweet). Sunday 3pm had a ~30 min wait for outdoor seating, or no wait for indoor table (which we chose). Single bathroom has a line. You order food outside and pay, then they bring the food to you. Self serve water. Seating can feel tight or close to others. Due to the location, drivers more aggressive than SF, and poor parking, accessing the parking lot can be a bit tricky. We came on a really nice day, so it was pretty busy, but the staff still managed to accommodate us quickly, which was great. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to your table. We shared the ceviche, fish tacos, and fish and chips. The ceviche was good and fresh, but for the price, I was expecting a bit more in terms of portion size. The fish was crispy with a great ratio of breading and finished with a nice touch of sea salt. The fries had good seasoning, though I wish they were a little more crispy. This is a really cool restaurant tucked away behind a building at Tam Junction. Mostly outdoor seating, but it is comfortable and protected with all wooden chairs. I know they have a location in San Francisco as well. The food is very local with a lot of fish served pub style with a lot of Latin choices. Big menu with a lot of options. One thing that I thought was unusual, but turned out to be really good and hard to stop eating was ceviche and chips, but almost a Korean style with lots of sesame oil. Unusual but good. This place on a Wednesday night was pretty full. You could tell a lot of locals go there but it's also in the corridor where tourist might stop by on the way to Mount Tam or the beach. This one has been on our list for a while! We stopped by over the weekend around 2pm ish and there was a 50min - 1hr wait. Of course, the weather was gorgeous, so we expected a wait, but what surprised us was when we asked the server taking our order if it was always busy like this, his response was "oh, actually this is pretty chill compare to how it usually is!". Wowza. So come prepared because it's popular! And why wouldn't it be? There's plenty of seating outside, the staff is friendly and welcoming and the food is great! Came here after a hike at Mt Tam and it was an estimated 90 minute wait. We ended up getting seating earlier than that which was great cause we were hungry lol. You are seated at a table then order at the counter and they will bring out your order. It was super busy on a Sunday afternoon. The food itself was super fresh. We ordered oysters, fish and chips, and fish tacos. Everything was so good, however I did think the fish lacked seasoning. I found myself using the hot sauce to counteract the lack of flavor. I love their chips, it's the thick and crispy kinds I like. Nice fish spot with indoor and outdoor seating. You pick a table and order outside at the counter. We got the fish and chips, guac, and the grilled fish sandwich. The guac was super mild and creamy. I personally prefer chunky and spicy but my mom liked it. Everything was cooked well and served quickly. The service was professional and friendly. We stopped by Hook Fish in Mill Valley after a day of hiking in Mt. Tam and it was bustling on a Sunday night. We put our name down and waited in our car for about 45 minutes for an inside table. There are outdoor picnic benches in the beer garden out back that are first come first serve, but it was a chilly December night so we opted to wait for indoor seating. When our table was ready, we took our number tag to reserve the table and ordered our food at the counter outside. The indoor bar area was warm and well lit, and the outdoor deck was very cute with string lights and a lively atmosphere. Definitely a great place to come hang out and have a beer. One minor inconvenience occurred when the staff forgot about one of our orders, but they were nice about it and made the food quickly when we brought it to their attention, so I won't dock a star. Grilled albacore tuna plate: Great portions of fish, veggies, rice, and beans. Everything tasted great after our hikes and the sauce/salsa that came with it was yummy. Amazing fresh fish served outside in a beautiful garden spot. There is a wait, but it is most definitely worth it. Service is friendly and efficient, and trust their recommendations. I had the poke platter, which was a massive amount of food, even for a big guy like me. The restaurant is clean, much of it is outdoors which is very nice. Also the location is an absolute chaotic disaster for trying to safely enter the parking lot, find a parking space. Ordered ceviche, a couple oysters, tacos with fried rockfish, and a burrito with lingcod per cashier recommendation. Ceviche came with oranges in it which made it pretty sweet overall. Not for me. Was missing the acidic punch a typical ceviche offers. Oysters were good! Clean taste with nice mignonette. Tacos and burrito were fresh with lots of bright slaw but way too bland. None of the fish tasted seasoned. Rice and beans in the burrito also lacked salt. One of my tacos was randomly missing the avocado slice. They had a habanero carrot sauce available at the table. Sounded exciting. Was not. Basically orange colored vinegar with a hint of spice. Got a few sours but none were sour and instead juicy fruit types. Nothing too exciting in our option. Food is brought out by folks in the kitchen and they run off speedily. Hard to get help if you need something. Note: We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was full of families and dogs. Typical for a beer garden but good to keep in mind. No knock on the restaurant but there were some leash aggressive and nippy dogs. More on owners for not recognizing their pets are stressed. Hook Fish is a good casual spot with more outdoor than indoor dining, so it's a place we tend to visit during good weather, which fortunately Mill Valley has plenty of. Favorite orders for us include their fish (add your preferred fresh caught fish) with nice salt flake alongside chips (fries), fresh poke with house-made tortilla chips, and grilled fish tacos with a creamy slaw with pepitas for texture and crunch. With popular hiking trails and biking paths nearby this place gets busy. We opted to order drinks while we waited for our table, and it was good that they had a decent selection of beers and drinks to choose from. Once our table was ready, we ordered a grilled fish sandwich, fish and chips, oysters on the half shell and a ceviche. The fish sandwich was good (I'd order this again), the fish and chips were mediocre and under seasoned, the ceviche was flavorful but a rather small portion, and the oysters on the half shell($4 each) were okay. The service was spotty with a busser clearing part of our table but leaving the other part for later. The food is reasonably priced for the Bay Area, but the portions are on the smaller side. So I live in the Peninsula, I came to this place twice in a row, once on 5/30 with friends who was familiar with the San Francisco location and the next day to celebrate a friend's birthday on the 31st. We had recommended our friends this spot because we enjoyed our first time there. It was amazing service, short wait time, great ambience, and great food and drinks. Oysters are also super fresh. On the 31st, we arrived just before 7pm, there was a 45 minute wait to br seated and we were warned that food would take an extra 30 minutes to prepare but we were allowed to enjoy the beers inside while we wait. We were seated in about 30 minutes which is not bad at all. We ordered food at 7:51pm and the appetizers were good (ceviche+chips and oysters) and came out fairly quick. We kept waiting for our the rest of our food, about 40 minutes from ordering time. I decided to go up to ask the cashier for an update. She then tells me its a 45 minute wait for the food and she would check on it for us. 10 minutes later, my other friend asked the server for an update and he said food is taking longers than usual because their fryer was broken. 5 minutes later, I had realized that the table that sat at the same time as us had gotten their food, finished it, and left. We go back to ask them at the counter and returned with the same response that they their fryer was broken. Another 5 minutes pass, the table that arrived after us had already gotten their food and left. At this point, we have been waiting for an hour for our food. My other friend decided to go up to the cooks and thats when they realized that the ticket was missed so they started the order for us. The food had arrived 5 minutes after and at this time it was around 8:55pm and they close at 9pm. I don't think the time was the biggest factor for my 2 star review, it was more so the fact that we were dismissed 3 times before they realized that we were not exaggerating. And out of the 4 people we talked to, only one person actually checked on our order. This was a sunday night and we had to drive back to either the east bay, the peninsula, or south bay. It was incredibly disappointing because we were celebrating a birthday and it was a place I recommended after having a great experience the day before. They did give us an extra guac and ceviche to make up for the wait but no extra food could have made up for the poor service that we were given and the amount of times we were dismissed that day. read more

Quite a lot of seating with many larger tables, you might have to share one if things get busy Poke and fish were great, though use sparingly! There was not enough poke for chips which sent me into a deep pit of despair UNTIL I had the fish and chips Try to eat the fish and chips sharpish, it's best when they are hot, for me I was climbing out of the pit of despair slowly so some of my food had already cooked. The fish had a nice crunch and a good inside, it was soft and not dried out. Great place albeit slightly pricier than spots over the bridge in the city. What you see is what you would guess it tastes like. The fish rice plate is pretty much the deconstructed version of the fish tacos + rice. Honestly, mediocre at best. I also had the poke on the side (not pictured) and it just tasted like it was just mixed in only sesame oil. I couldn't even taste much of the fish at that point. If you decide to come, I would only get the fish & chips because that was the only thing that was actually really good. Lightly battered, super crispy, fresh fried fish! If I only had this, I would've given this place a 5/5. But because I had three other items that were just okay, not to mention we ended up having to wait 45+ minutes for a dine in order, did not serve this place well. The upside is that you can shop at the Proof Lab stores until your meal is ready. I really enjoyed the seasonal halibut fish plate. There's lots of seating but with most of it outside, on a hot summer day, it's the luck of the draw to find a shady table. The umbrellas don't provide shade for everyone. Pro-tip get your burrito cut in half, it's easier to chomp on with a group..especially if sharing with a mate! We also tried the fresh watermelon juice, sooo good and kiddo approved! I've been to the Hook Fish Co location in San Francisco, but this one was slight bigger and had an aesthetic outdoor area. Inside, I ordered one of their lager beers. Outside, my friend and I ordered their fish of the day burrito along with fish and chips. Our orders were brought to the table we chose. The lager beer was tasty and worth its price point. The burrito was delicious and went well with the multiple sauce options given on our table. The fish plate and poke's are my go to, I always crave both and it's a great place where you can have a healthy but super satisfying dinner. Service is super fast and always kind. 4 star for the ambiance, 3.5 stars for the food, quick and polite service. They have a good size parking lot but it seems half of Mill Valley is eating here, so it can be packed and challenging to park sometimes. Everyone needs to line up to get a seat and for a party of 8 we were told the wait time was 45 mins, but we got seated in 15 mins. The other customers told us that the seating is not so bad even though they told people with a much longer wait time. The menu is small, we ordered fresh oysters, crab cakes, ceviche, and guacamole to share. The oyster is fresh but too small. The crab cake is too soft and seemed a bit bland. The salad that comes with it was fresh. The ceviche and guacamole are ok but nothing spectacular. For the mains, we tried the poke salad, grilled fish plate and fish and chips. The poke salad is the best; fresh, sumptuous and delicious. Grilled fish is a bit bland, everyone likes the pico the most. 3 pieces of fish and chips are sumptuous and the fries are spicy fries. The drink menu is quite interesting! They also have other freshly made drinks on the ice bed that is daily special and not on the menu. Today they have the watermelon and mint, and pineapple and mint. They are also less pricey, $3.5 a cup. The indoor seating was simple but has a bar area; I am most impressed with the patio area. It's spacious, casual and chill. You can bring dogs at the patio and there are tons of seating spaces. Prices are reasonable; $17-19 a plate in most options. read more

This place was craaaackin' on a Saturday afternoon; luckily they had space for our big (14) group. Super casual spot with lots of outdoor seating and is also pet friendly... or should I say animal friendly because there were lots of birds trying to partake in our lunch as well as many buzzin' bees. There is also a cute nursery next door that you are free to explore. The food was GREAT! Fish tacos.. bomb. Fish & chips... also bomb. The carrot habanero was interesting but I enjoyed it! We were only really disappointed with the ceviche and poke starters. They were both tasty but the ceviche/poke to chip ratio was ridiculous. Skip the starters and stick with the mains. read more
