TLDR: If it's your first time in Macon and looking for something to eat, or if you're just in need of a good burger, the Rookery is where you need to go. I was in Macon for the day and after talking to a couple of friends who lived here for a couple of years attending Mercer, The Rookery seemed like a place I had to visit. They described it as having the best burgers and shakes, so there were definitely high expectations going into the Rookery. I'm not from Macon and The Rookery is located downtown, and after my experience, it seems like parking for this place is pretty much wherever you can find it along the street. You may have to walk a couple of blocks after you find a spot, which was what happened to me. No matter though - you'll probably be eating a lot of calories here and walking off a couple isn't the worst thing. Anyway, I came here on a Saturday for lunch and it was incredibly busy. I probably had to wait 30 minutes or so for a table and you unfortunately cannot avoid this as the Rookery does not take reservations. I can't imagine how packed this place will be in the evening, so be prepared for that. If you do come here, it's most likely for the burgers. They do have some other stuff on the menu, but I think the burgers are the way to go. When we went here, we got the Jimmy Carter burger and the James Browns' black and blue burger. The Jimmy Carter burger has peanut butter and bacon added and if you're into that combination, The Rookery's take on this burger is absolutely delicious. If it's your first time here, I'd probably go with the Jimmy Carter. The James Brown was good too - it's pretty much what I'd expect from a good black and blue burger. Despite how busy it was when I went, service actually wasn't too bad. The wait staff didn't seem too rushed during out interactions and it made for a good experience. Overall, I think The Rookery's burgers live up to the hype and it's a must try in Macon. read more

It's unfortunate that places are under employed during this time which I completely understand. However to sit for an hour and a half and to see multiple parties who arrived after myself and friends and receive their food (especially when the items we ordered were similar, if not the same dishes as other patrons ordered) is rather upsetting. The manager did come out to speak with us, however no remediation was offered or reasoning to why we weren't served our food after the long wait, other than the kitchen was backed up. Maybe out order was forgotten all around... who knows.. Our server didn't seemed to involved with finding a solution as well. Great spot. If you are in Macon, you have to stop in for one or two meals. This is the place where locals go too, so you know it's good. Nicolas took care of us and he is great. Therefore, I cannot speak on the ambience of the restaurant b/c I actually never stepped foot into the restraunt. I can only comment on the food. The turkey-reuben sandwich I ordered was okay. The turkey was savory and the sour sauce on it excited my tastebuds. The turkey was moist. I liked the texture of the toast; it was soft. The sandwich came hot, freshly prepared from the kitchen. You get a big sandwich along with garlic fries for $8.50. The waitress attended our table fairly well. At times, I thought she was pushing us to hurry up and order while we were going over the menu. Quintessential Macon downtown eatery for a burger. My favorite is the Walden Greenback with a fried green tomato and goat cheese. It is a great place to start or end a night downtown, it is welcoming of all types of people, there is a wait during peak dinner times, but it usually goes pretty quickly. I had the burger special - it had a clever name, but I can't place it now... It was outstanding. This is what people are talking about when they say that something melted in their mouth. Really cool pub restaurant. We stopped in here before a show at the Cox Capitol Theater, which is just around the corner. The place was very crowded, and after discussions with bartender, the place stays crowded. We sat at the bar, due to lack of other seating.
