A legend in Abbeville for decades. Notorious for their hot dogs with a bottled Coca cola. If you grew up in Abbeville, you will remember ladies were not allowed to enter in the 1960's. We stopped in for a drink while we were in town so I can't speak for the food but lots of people were coming in for the hot dogs and ice cream so it must be good. I love a good dive bar and that what it used to be from what I've heard from family members. The workers were friendly and they have a decent beer supply. It was a nice afternoon break. read more

I come from Massachusetts and I've noticed that we just can't get a good hot dog down here. Although the rough house doesn't have good hot dogs (from a northerners opinion) to me the whole shop gives such a homey vibe. I love the rustic bar. The friendliest service. Rated 1 of the top 15 dives in SC by ThrillList. That is why I went (also the precious Yelp reviews). Very simple fare - hot dogs with chili. They were very good. The chili wasn't hot enough temp wise but the owner did ask me if it was ok and I said yes. He said it was an especially large batch that he was heating up so he was worried it wasn't to temp yet. I got there right around 11am when they just opened. Service was fast and friendly. I read another review that complained about that. Not me. Will go back when I'm in the area and in the mood for a chili dog. read more

Ice cream and chili dogs...simple...ordered at the counter and food was served in less than five minutes. It's a dive for sure but hey it's also fairly cheap for lunch. $5.50 for two dogs, chips and a canned drink. It's that just-right-amount-of-mustard on every hot dog every time we go that keeps us coming back. The chili, the wiener, & the finely chopped onions on top...we have never been disappointed! I'll never forget the day he dropped that glistening dog in front of me and said "one, all the way". It was the tenth of September, a burning hot afternoon in Abbeville. I strolled into the Rough House, ordered a hot dog - all the way and a classic in a can. That hot dog took me on a palatial adventure my taste buds have never imagined before. I felt like I had the world at my finger tips when I ordered. I could have it anyway I wanted it. All the way, no onions, extra onions, with mustard, without mustard, with ketch... I mean without ketchup. I grabbed a seat at the table in front - close to the Coca-Cola classic sign. I had a full view of the pristinely manicured square. Freddy gave me a wave and a wink as he strolled by. I was feeling good. Ready to order a classic in a can. The bar hand brought one over and I popped it open. So cold, like it had been plucked out of a glacier. Then my dog arrived. The mustard, the onion, the chili... the flavor profile of this hot dog was spectacular. I'll never eat a hot dog again from anywhere other than the Rough House. Go Rough House, Go Panthers, Go USA. Been eating here since I was 5, sitting at my grandfathers knee. Back in that day, proper women, such as my grandmother would'nt pass through the doors of the Rough House. It was a mans world 50 years ago. Fast forward to today. The billiard tables and the beer are ensconced behind a new partition wall, the racks of comic books are gone, my grandfathers favorite was "Archie." But the cold Cokes are still there as well as the "dogs." Steamed buns, generic frankfurters, and the finest grained chili, mostly meat with a whisper of spice. Throw a few diced onions on top and you have a southern classic. If I had encountered this dog anywhere else, I would be less than impressed. But at the Rough House, it is a blissful nostalgia trip back into a simpler time. I love how the main parlor displays the patina of it's age, from the photos on the wall, to the layers of paint on the peeling brick façade. This place has changed very little in the 50 years I've been sitting at the counter, and by no means am I a regular, but I hope it endures for another 50 years. read more

We had a horrible experience with this establishment. SERVICE WAS HORRID!!!The woman behind the counter was unfriendly and rude to all of us. I will NEVER go back again because of her ugly disposition. Its a shame because everyone else we met in Abbeyville was wonderful. I suppose since I have been in customer service all my life, i feel like customers should be greeted with a smile and an air of appreciation. We were not. The woman seemed very put out to take our order and she was complaining about the "crappy shake equipment" she was surly and we were her only customers.
