On the bottom floor of the Kales Building, Boo thing and I went here while waiting to meet up with friends. We went on a Wednesday evening - it was happy hour, and Royce also had a free tasting, hosted by the owners. They were kind and cool, and told us that The Royce welcomes affordable and family-grown boutique wines to their space. The charcuterie plate was also on point - we got Brie, smoked Gouda, a ton of olives, and prosciutto. There was an eclectic mix of people in the space, and it was just busy enough to feel abuzz. The staff also get a shout out for being friendly. They're paid a living wage, which also makes The Royce the place to be & support. We enjoyed our bottle of mead and our crackers and onion jam. It's fairly easy to get to from the people mover, less than a 5 minute walk. I hesitate to write this review because I don't want the secret to get out about this gem downtown! Truth be told, I cannot say enough good things about the Royce. Staff is always attentive, knowledgeable, and willing to help you find the perfect glass (or bottle) to enjoy. Craft cocktails are also on the menu and although I can't vouch for how they taste, when I've seen others order, they look beautiful. This place is gem! For the wine connoisseur and novice alike. Really cool atmosphere and fantastic happy hour. They maintain a great selection of wines that can work with most budgets. We've discovered some new favorites there for sure. The staff is super friendly and accommodating for parties big and small. I love sitting a the bar but there is a cool upstairs seating area that better accommodates groups. The wine tastings on Wednesday can be a little confusing because of the space but they really do attract some great vineyards. In addition to the wines, we love the French 75 cocktail. This place was great. I highly recommend this as a meeting place before dinner or group outing. There is plenty of room to buy a glass of wine (or a bottle with a small corking fee) and sit and chat as your group gathers. We had dinner reservations two blocks away and we stopped here for a glass of wine prior to going. There was a short list of cocktails and a few beers for those non-wine drinkers. There is a food list but this is more munchies with your cocktail versus a meal. There are a variety of cheeses and meats as well as olives if you are interested in a nosh with your drink. We spoke to one of the managers (I am assuming) and she had clear passion for the place and the people in it. It's not glamorous but it is easy to relax and I think anyone would be able to find a glass of something to enjoy. Remember you CAN buy a retail bottle and pay a minimal corking fee and enjoy it right then without the crazy restaurant mark ups!! read more

Amazing! Great selection of eclectic wines, very well priced. Had a wine and cheese charcuterie that was prepared by Jimmy ...all I did was tell him what I liked and didn't and he put together an awesome display of food! We cleaned the board, perfect!! Went here for a Yelp Elite event and it was beautiful. Extremely aesthetically pleasing and a very friendly owner and staff. Many great picture locations. The wine choices are beyond extensive; they cover an entire wall. However, the bathroom situation definitely needs to be fixed. There is one single stall bathroom, and the door looks like an outside door yet it leads directly to the toilet. I accidentally walked in on someone and while I was using it someone walked in on me. Last visit was not as good as first. Must have drunk a red glass of wine that remained opened for quite a while. Never tasted a Sangiovese wine that bad. Went to The Royce with a new-found friend last weekend after the Christina Aguilera concert was postponed. I'm originally from Rochester NY and was in DTW for the concert. My friend had been dying to go here for some time and since I was a newbie, was all in! The atmosphere was chill and glamorous, but without seeming too pretentious. I ordered a French 75 that was to die for! My friend ordered a moscato, but found it to be a little too sweet for her. The bartender was accommodating and switched it for a French 75. What I took most away from it was the fact that they had stainless steel straws, no plastic! I thought that was so awesome and is on point with being more environmentally sustainable. I actually now want to order stainless steel straws for rocks glasses so I can carry them around and no longer will need plastic ones. Kudos to you The Royce for treating your customers and the environment with respect and class! read more
