I had a wonderful experience at Ladder 4. I visited solo and immediately felt comfortable, which says a lot about the atmosphere. They offer great options for wine enthusiasts or the casual wine drinkers. The bar service was excellent. My bartender was warm, knowledgeable, and happy to answer questions and offer recommendations. I had the capellini al limone with a beautiful Spanish cava. The true standout, however, was the lemon semifreddo with pine nuts and olive oil paired with Kabaj "Konde", which easily earned a spot among my top five desserts of all time. The bright citrus and creamy texture of the semifreddo balanced the richness and fruitiness of the olive oil beautifully. The toasted pine nuts added texture, while the fresh tarragon brought a subtle herbal note that tied everything together into a remarkably balanced dessert. I highly recommend Ladder 4 for any date night, girls night, engagement party, etc. I'll definitely be back! read more

Ladder 4 provided a unique venue to start a night out in Detroit recently. Set in an old fire station, the high ceilings and large windows in the front gave the place an open feel. We grabbed a spot immediately at the bar and perused the wine list. Our server was generous with letting us sample before committing to a glass. I tried orange wine for the first time and decided to stick with whites. A Riesling from Saarland hit all the right notes. For food, we ordered shrimp cocktail. 3 plump shrimp over ice with a side of cocktail sauce and shavings of fresh horseradish arrived. We savored every bite. Next up was the venison tartare. It was a unique take on the meat, mild in flavor. I would absolutely order again and recommend. If ladder 4 is on your list to check out, do not hesitate to go. Such a cool restaurant - in a residential neighborhood just northwest of Corktown - not much around it! Beautifully renovated and decorated old fire station! Props to the interior designer. Came with a couple of friends. Seated promptly. Cool environment. Had the Sunday dinner - preset dinner. Venison was the main course the night we came. Supplemented it with scallops (amazing Hokkaido ones - huge and perfectly done) and a lamb ragu on pasta (so flavourful and rich) Service was on spot. Drinks were great. Explored the area behind the restaurant - would be an amazing eating and lounging area in warmer months! They have a small garden they source some of their veggies from across the street. I love coming to Ladder 4 with no idea in mind and always leaving more than satisfied and excited for the next visit. The space is a great open area with larger booths in the middle and seats along the wall opposite of the bar. Even when it's a slower flow, the environment and food always makes me feel energized. We came for a little after-happy hour glass of wine and ended up ordering some cheese and poached pear with ice cream for dessert. All of which were amazingly delicious. Had a wonderful dinner tonight at ladder 4 wine bar. We sat at the bar and I didn't grab the bartenders name but he was very knowledgeable and helpful. This location is an old fire house. It's super cool and still has the pole the firefighters would come down. We arrived around 545 and it was pretty empty. There was the regular menu and also a bar menu from 5p-7p. We ordered the shrimp cocktail and monkfish nuggets from the bar menu. Both were delicious! They grate fresh horseradish on top of the cocktail sauce. We also got the lobster salad, which was actually my favorite of the night. The lobster was cooked perfectly and tastes so fresh and light. I loved it. My husband got the pork chop and I got the lemon pasta, both were also amazing! Overall a great night. We stopped here for the first time and will admit the food and the ambiance was wonderful. We had the Sunday Roast dinner which features a leg of lamb for two people. We had ample food and it was delicious. Even though the food was delicious there were a few dissappointment. Even though the lamb was cooked beautifully, the preparation of the meat cut was lacking. I do think the membranes and cartilage needed to be removed before cooking because it was hard to cut and hard to chew. Along with this comment we were given a tiny appetizer-type plate to put a big cut of meat, potatoes, peas, salad and bread on. The plate did not work at all. We were also given a butter knife to cut the meat which didn't work. I asked for a steak knife which I was given. I didn't know there were bigger plates. (I was told that later on when I complained about the plate size. I was told to ask for a large plates). Now, how was I supposed to know there were larger plates. A server should have given a sharper knife and a larger plates without us asking. So even though the food was delicious, there are a few points to improve on which I mentioned above. read more

After many visits for wine and light food, we decided to experience a full dinner at Ladder 4. It started out fine--waters came out quickly, and our server introduced himself. It was downhill from there though. Selecting a bottle of wine was a challenge; our server was very limited in his knowledge and rather clunky. When I asked about a wine we'd had there before, he got uncomfortably close to my personal space to look at the wine menu with me, then grabbed it out of my hands. The only description he gave when deciding was that he "liked that wine" or the owner "liked that wine." The only real help was when ordering food--he said the wine we picked would pair well with the fish. That brings me to the next issue: the waiter waited until we were ordering to tell us they were out of the entree we wanted, then stood there while we uncomfortably switched our order. Then things got worse... The food was very inconsistent in every way... Bread and crudo came out fast, the crudo was very bland--little flavor besides a slight fishiness. It was cut in large chunks instead of thin slices, leaving mouthfuls of flavorless fish. The next dish, heirloom tomato salad, took an excessive amount of time to arrive--over 30 minutes. That said, it was delicious and unfortunately the highlight of the meal. Next, we waited for over an hour with no warning from our server, who actually seemed to ignore us during this long wait. We almost finished our entire bottle of expensive wine while waiting, with only a couple of water refills from a different server. By this point, we'd been at the restaurant for just over two hours. We overheard the table next to us, who seemed very miserable, mention they hadn't seen their server in an hour either! Finally, our main course of deep-fried skate with broccoli cabbage showed up. The fish wasn't cut correctly, so my wife's first bite consisted of bones and a hard nub of skull. She was so grossed out she didn't eat another bite. I thought it was okay; the peppers were full of seeds and should have been cleaned out, and the fish was basically a large fish stick. The highlight was the chutney, which saved the dish. The broccoli/cabbage was decent--I wanted more smoke and char from it, but it had a nice purée and balance. At this point, we had been at the restaurant for three hours and had to cancel plans we'd made for after dinner. Our server came over, wiped the table, and didn't even acknowledge how long we'd been sitting. He went straight into dessert. We had the cheesecake--it was okay, nothing special, a little lumpy. There was not a single attempt to make up for the excessively long dinner--no free dessert, no apology, not even a glass of wine to enjoy with our entree since we were out. They've been getting a ton of press lately, picked as one of the best restaurants in Detroit. Either they were ill-prepared for the influx of new customers or it was just an off night. The space is still one of the most unique and creative in Detroit. The other servers we've had there in the past were on point--knowledgeable and extremely welcoming. At that price point for dinner, there are too many amazing places I'd rather go to in Detroit. For now, Ladder 4 will go back to being just an amazing wine bar for me and my wife. read more

Had the privilege tonight to attend a private event for a special couple at Ladder 4 Wine Bar in Detroit...the food and beverages and inside/outside facilities were fantastic (the weather god cooperated too)...but equally and maybe more impressive was the service and the way the staff made the night so much fun for the participants and very importantly worked as a TEAM...each employee must have been highly instructed/seasoned in their responsibilities...the owner and manager watched over every detail throughout the night without seeming to micromanage at all...will remember tonight as a prime example of the BEST of DETROIT... read more

Recently recognized as one of America's most exciting new restaurants, Ladder 4 has certainly caught the city's attention. With its creative menu and buzzworthy dishes, expectations were high going in--but our experience revealed both flashes of potential and several areas in need of polish. We were greeted warmly but waited a noticeable amount of time before receiving water or being acknowledged by our server. While she was kind and tried her best, she appeared overwhelmed managing her tables. Her knowledge of the menu and wine pairings felt limited, and the overall presentation from the service team lacked the professionalism expected of a restaurant earning citywide recognition. Casual attire with visible logos and a somewhat disheveled look distracted from the upscale dining atmosphere Ladder 4 is striving to create. The food showed creativity but didn't consistently deliver on execution. * Hashbrowns with Caviar: A fun, high-low concept, but the hashbrowns were reminiscent of McDonald's--greasy and lacking seasoning. The caviar itself was lovely, but the dish needed more salt or contrast to make it pop. * Cabbage & Broccoli Dish: This course was a highlight--flavorful with nice Asian-inspired notes and depth. * Fish Course: The presentation was attractive, but the fish skin was soft rather than crisp, missing an important texture. The eggplant base, while creative, leaned overly sweet and didn't balance the dish as well as it could have. * Dessert - Cheesecake: After reading strong reviews, we were curious, but the texture was uneven and lumpy, lacking the silky smoothness expected from a standout cheesecake. Service pacing was another challenge. Dinner stretched over two hours for three shared courses, which felt excessive, especially for a small tasting-style meal. We also had to request silverware multiple times and noticed some inconsistency in attention to detail. On a positive note, the restaurant's ambiance is modern and inviting, and we'd love to have been offered a brief tour of the upstairs space or adjoining rooms--showcasing more of what makes Ladder 4 special could enhance the guest experience. Clearer signage for restrooms would also help polish the flow for diners. Overall: Ladder 4 shows genuine promise with its inventive menu and growing acclaim, but the experience currently falls short of the award-winning standard it's being recognized for. With improved service training, more refined execution on dishes, and attention to pacing, it could truly live up to its potential. Would we return? Possibly--especially after a few refinements. Absolutely, the BEST dining experience we've enjoyed in a while here in Corktown! Street parking on Vinewood is free. The old fire station space is so cool - wide open and inviting. The staff, everyone one of them were warm, knowledgeable and intend on ensuring a wonderful experience was had by their patrons. Jeff was our server this evening. We were thankful for his thoughtful recommendations for wine pairing with our meal options. We found the price point reasonable for the quality of the meal, the interesting wines, and the pours. Do order the sour bread appetizer. It is served warmed and crusty with salted butter on the side. The Tuna Crudo was so flavorful! Loved the warm Potato Salad with (omg!) White Fish and Pickled Egg toppings! My Duck was wonderful. My companion loved his Monkfish Kebob in Lobster sauce. We finished with a really interesting Pistachio gelato. The atmosphere was wonderful. Great lighting, beautiful details in the design and very relaxing but the food was disappointing. I wasn't happy with the combination of flavors and textures. It lacked balance and layers. Some plates more than others. Even though the plates were creative and beautiful, I think they need to redo their menu. I was very happy to see a lot of gluten free items though. That part was excellent. I also really enjoyed many of the items were not fried. Other than the food being not what we expected, the service was incredible. The staff was very professional and friendly. For the Ann Arbor-ites, this place gave me Spencer vibes which is a high high compliment as Spencer is probably my favorite restaurant in AA! Ladder 4 Wine also has a great wine selection/wine shop AND a small but mighty menu! I also love that Ladder 4 Wine is nestled in a lil' neighborhood and is in a converted Firehouse. The interior is impeccable - chef's kiss to whoever did the renovations & made the design decisions! Ladder 4 Wine has been on my radar but it blipped fast & furiously when it repped Michigan on Bon Appetit's Best New Restaurant list! We made a late evening rezzie and had a double date night! The food was really creative -- I'm literally NEVER going to forget that I ate chocolate with CAPERS for dessert. *brandade toast (potato, parmigiano, esplette) - First time having brandade toast! It was basically like a fancy AF tuna melt. Tasted really comforting yet novel at the same time. *burnt leeks potato, comté, spruce and brandade toast potato, parmigiano - I really enjoy leeks and I don't eat them often so this was a treat! Great dish - 100/100 - no notes! *sweet potato (stracciatella, tomato honey) - I could eat this ALL day. I don't know how they got such a PERFECT texture on this sweet potato but it was the perfect vessel for the cheese. *roasted cabbage (black truffle, celeriac, fried shallot) - technically an entree but we ordered it to try because we were intrigued. Didn't really taste the black truffle and generally felt a little underseasoned BUT it was actually a great pairing to the rockstar that was the pork chop schnitzel! *pork chop schnitzel (heritage berkshire pork, chili, mint) - cooking this thing must have been a BEAST. It was very well cooked given that it was pretty thicc. Really tasty breading! *burnt basque cheesecake (pedro ximénez, olive oil) - Great basque cheesecake! Loved the touch of sherry to add some brightness to an otherwise rich cheesecake! *chocolate cremeux espelette, capers, orange - this dessert was soo intellectual and unique. The flavors somehow WORKED. Worth a try but the portion size was perfect to share between the 4 of us. The pacing was a bit weird though as it seemed like the kitchen was pretty backed up. On a little patch on a block with apartments and houses rests a former firehouse thoughtfully converted into a dynamite restaurant. There's little going on in this area, with zero shops or other restaurants nearby. Park on the side street, it's fine. We went there for a special occasion. Make that reservation, you'll need it. Empty tables don't exist for more than a few minutes, and they are packed in. Servers are laid back, knowledgeable, and friendly. Not in the "corporate wants me to smile", but genuine. I think the employees like working here! The food was amazing. If you want to pair the wine, ask for a suggestion. I'm so glad we did, both the red and the white wines we had complemented the food perfectly. The menu changes regularly, so what we ordered likely won't be available next week. Except the bread - I rarely eat any bread, but I'm glad I did this evening. Tables are small, but so are the plates. Share your food, there's just too many good things to try. And yes, even dessert was amazing. Dress up or not, doesn't matter. Anything goes. A sport coat is fine, but so are sweaters and sneakers. Entrance is a really plain door on the side, not at all where we expected it to be - and with very little indication of where it was. Bun was perfectly toasted, sauce had the perfect tang, lettuce and tomato were crisp and the beef was terrific. Could have easily eaten three. Will absolutely not be back. Called in advance to see if they could accommodate a dairy allergy. I was told yes no problem. Upon arriving and telling the waiter I had a dairy allergy, she took the menu to the kitchen and came back with dishes crossed out that I could not eat. Unfortunately this meant I could only have 3 dishes - beef tartar, broccoli and a $169 steak dish. I asked if there was any way to leave dairy ingredients off or cook a dish in olive oil instead of butter and was told no. My next issue was when I did order the tartar that I was told was dairy free. They brought me bread with it that was covered in butter and blue cheese. When I asked if I could instead have bread without that, I was told sure for a fee. Overall I was very disappointed with the service and lack of accommodating when I had made an effort to verify in advance. I understand my allergy is limiting but then they should not have told me they could accommodate. The group I was with who ate a large portion of the menu found the food to be 'okay'. This place is absolutely fantastic. Vibes, service, food, wine, all excellent. Our server was so gracious and he let us try a few wines before we decided. We loved the wines he suggested. Since there were only 2 of us, we just ordered by the glass, but they have a great little wine room where you can just go peruse the bottles and grab whatever you like for dinner rather than just reading the menu. The lighting is very romantic - it would be a perfect place for date night. The food honestly blew me away. Their menu is small and always changing, which just makes me want to come more often to try new things. The scallop crudo with truffle was decadent, velvety, fresh & cold with delicious crispy bits and a yummy sauce. The sweet potato was huge and even better than I expected - made with fresh farmer's cheese that was seasoned perfectly and anything but bland. This awesome chili crisp type sauce was on top with lots of yummy seeds - tons of flavor and would make an excellent vegetarian entree. We also had their cabbage dish and the pork schnitzel, which went very well together. The cabbage has a smoky roast-y flavor with these awesome gems of golden raisin - sort of sweet and sour notes with white sesame seeds on top. Delicious flavor and texture. We also loved the schnitzel - well seasoned, perfectly fried and crispy with tender meat inside. Topped with a great fresh slaw and this yummy lightly sweet red wine transparent sauce on the bottom of the plate so the schnitzel stayed crispy. Honestly, perfect. We ended the meal with their cheesecake thanks to our server's suggestion and wow. It was so odd sounding but was one of the best, most unique cheesecakes I've ever had - it had this flavorful light caramel sauce and a burnt top that gave it the perfect flavor balance between sweet and almost savory with a perfect creamy texture. Yum! the perfect way to end the meal. If you're looking for a place to have a great dinner with friends or somewhere to dine solo at the bar or even just to have a couple glasses of wine after work, Ladder 4 is it. It has a neighborhood vibe that I love, and is upscale without being pretentious at all - it would be a perfect place to bring out-of-towners. It is a welcome departure from the downtown "scene," and I already can't wait to return. Came to Ladder 4 for a summer solstice celebration and it was such a great experience Drinks: The selection here was really cool. I got to try a skin contact wine that was absolutely delicious. My friend had a non alcoholic fermented tea that honestly stood up to the wine selection. So good it had me googling distributors at the table. Food: The food is excellent if not 100% to my taste. We shared the sourdough bread, raw Maine scallops, stuffed morels, snow crab capellini, ibérico pork, ice cream, and lemon posset. The stand outs were the scallops which were so decadent with pickled rhubarb and the ibérico pork which we all agreed was some of the best pork we've had. We also loved loved loved the lemon posset which perfectly balanced with the fattier meal we had and the pistachio ice cream was the most pistachio-y ice cream I've ever had. There were some details that I wish had been better like the beans with the pork weren't 100% cooked and the morels were slightly under flavored but overall I can't complain. Service: I cannot speak highly enough of the service. We came in super close to close and everyone was still so nice with giving recommendations and we didn't feel rushed out at all. The absolute best thing about this place is the wine list. It is eccentric and European and interestingly, unique. They sell wine by the glass you cannot buy bottles of anywhere else locally. A very enjoyable wine journey. Service is fantastic. Menu is extremely creative. Most dishes required explanation. Major complaint is almost everything is under seasoned, under flavored and just disappointing. The venison carpaccio is absolutely amazing. I will come back here just for that. The sweet potato dish is massively underwhelming. The wild boar Ragu is under flavored and underwhelming. The whole fish is mildly flavorful and underwhelming. The cheesecake was really good. I so want to give this place 5 stars for their service and their creative menu, and the wine list . However, their food deserves three stars. So averages to four stars. read more

I popped into Ladder 4 this past Saturday as a solo diner. I was able to get a bar seat after checking in at the host stand. The restaurant was lively with most tables being full with patrons. It is cool to see them maintain some elements of the old firehouse. Staff is very friendly and knows their stuff. The food menu is small with enough variety to please most palettes. I enjoyed the venison tartare which had the perfect balance of richness, acid and crunch. Really enjoyed the presentation on this dish. I also had the cappelini. I really liked the texture and thinness of the noodle. The brightness of the mint and peas was also nice but i felt it was under seasoned or missing something. Maybe just more salt in the pasta water? It also started to eat cold pretty quickly perhaps due to the straciatella. Wine menu by the glass has some interesting options from regions you often don't see. I do wish they had more full body jammy reds. The wine I had which was the "fullest" was just okay and didn't drink like a $19 glass. Definitely worth visiting again as they change their menu regularly. A friend and I first went to the wine bar after it was remodeled from a firehouse. At that time they only had a very limited wine list and some snacks. They now offer a dinner menu and while the wine list is short, they have expended it a bit, and have a small bottle room. We made reservations for a Saturday night, which was a good idea as they were busy, and the dining area is limited. The refurbished space is great, the high ceiling, and what appears to be the original bones of the firehouse. Low lighting and instrumental music. Our complaint in the design is that despite there being the space, many of the tables are incredibly close together. The person sitting on the booth side has to squeeze by the next table without knocking anything off the next table. The tables along the wall are also tiny, which was a bit annoying. Both the food and the wine menu are brief, and change regularly. I do not mind this, if the wine list is well curated and the food items well prepared, it is preferable to do it right. (Though for picky eaters, this may be an issue.) Be prepared for steep wine prices. As far as the quality of wine, both visits what we ordered was fantastic. (Regardless where you are from, if you like the wine, then it is good wine, and what you feel comfortable paying. There is such a variety in tastes that what one persons loves, another may hate.) My friend and I shared a couple, varied plates. Everything was wonderful, there was one dish I loved that my friend did not like part of the preparation. Going into detail is not helpful as the menu changes so often. The only item that seems to possibly be consistent is the cheesecake, and while I generally do not order dessert, this was worth it. Overall service was fine, as there was some great service, but also there was a minor issue, but it did not impact the experience. Seeing other reviews, I do hope that they can work out a better co existence with the neighbors. During a cold night, the noise was contained during our visit, but there appear to be concerns during warm weather. Really fun wine bar, and also they have a wine shop. Cool restored fire station. They were hopping when we stopped in on a Sunday evening. Outdoor space in front and back, and they apparently also have space upstairs, which we didn't look at. read more

5-2-24 Came for an early anniversary dinner. We loved it! Our server, Catherine, recommended a great wine, Breton Chinon, which was a wonderful pair with our bread (a must), asparagus salad, croquettes, and pasta. Happened to be a beautiful spring day and the garage door was propped open midmeal and the fresh air and great jazz soundtrack completed the excellent experience. Was obsessed with the interior- I thought it was so cool how they left some original touches of the fire station, especially the firefighter poles with the tile. I came from out of town and a friend wanted to meet here for smash burgers which from my understanding is an occasional thing. Last time I was here dinner was not on the menu, so we were very excited to try the new items. The wine here is always exciting and the food was just as exciting. We sat at the bar and had fantastic service. All of the staff had great knowledge and were really fun to be around. The history of the firehouse building is obvious and beautifully renovated. I will definitely come back, especially when the weather is better and I can bring my dog to the patio. P.S. We had the latkes with caviar and champagne while Sade was playing... it was everything! Our first time there to celebrate two birthdays. Ordered a bottle of champagne upon making the reservation saying we were celebrating. Our early 5:30pm reservation all four booths were available but they put us in a tight table saying booths were for special occasions - ummmm we had two special occasions! Such a hidden gem off the beaten path in Detroit. This renovated fire station has so much charm. Amazing and knowledgeable staff. They have a wine store where you can purchase your wine at retail and they will cork it for you. Great selection. The menu is eclectic but everything is perfectly curated and fresh. The sauce on the mushroom dish was exceptional. We loved the kielbasa. The shredded cabbage salad with horseradish is exceptional. Overall pricy but worth every penny. read more
