First time thrifting at any Salvation Army I can recall. This location is frequented by UVA students since just off grounds. My daughter was searching for a desk chair. We found possible candidates with great prices, but ended up not purchasing. We did talk with friendly staff. The store was clean, but inventory seemed low. No surprise with UVA move-in. So a 3.5 seems appropriate and rounding down. read more

This location is really well maintained - the staff are always super nice and almost everything is well appointed and color coded so it's easy and enjoyable to look around. I have thrifted a lot of art from here, I've noticed that a lot gets donated from older estates and this has been a good place to pick up cool pieces. Clothing wise the selection is pretty large. It is now a pretty popular spot for UVA students so just keep that in mind - they tend to clean out a lot of good pieces so stuff moved quickly. Furniture is usually in really good condition but the prices are very high - much more than Facebook marketplace. I think they have caught on to a lot of people buying and flipping furniture so a lot of the stuff here is priced fairly high. Overall the store is well maintained the staff are good and the location is safe and clean. Recommend if you are looking to thrift shop in cville. read more

This review is for their thrift drop off location just around the corner. I gathered up a ton of shirts, shoes, jackets, books, glasses, and other items I no longer needed and took them to the thrift store location on a Saturday. It was super easy to drop off the items, the folks were extremely kind, and answered all the questions that I had. Getting a receipt for the items donate was quick and easy. They had pads set up for me to be able to complete, get a carbon copy, and have to be able to provide for my tax needs. I like that when I drop something off at the Salvation Army, the likelihood of it, making it back in the local community is very high, so I know that the air fryer that I only used twice will likely find a home and bring somebody much cooking joy. If you're looking for a place to drop off your donate-able, this is definitely a place to consider. read more

Very disappointed with our attempt to do something good and donate some home and office furnishings for the cause. They took my nice office table and chair set, but wouldn't take my perfectly good file cabinet or two recliners. (Was told they don't take file cabinets, and that the recliners were too worn, although until a few weeks ago, we weren't ashamed to keep in our home). I wouldn't have been so irritated, except that the items were taking up space in my garage for three weeks waiting for SA to pick them up (they cancelled once after I waited on them all day, and tried to cancel again near the end of the day the following week). Next time I want to donate items or money, I'll look for a charity less... picky. read more

Having lived in the Fry's Spring area for 2 years, this Salvation Army was my conveniently located go-to for when I cleared out a closet and needed to donate some goods. I had not been inside to shop until recently. Large space, fairly organized racks, with probably 70% of the merchandise being clothing. There was some fun art and knick knacks at good prices, but not a huge selection of home goods or furniture. This will obviously shift some, but usually a thrift store keeps somewhat of a typical stock in, so I'm guessing this location usually stocks mostly clothes. That being said, there were some really cute tops and a few nice dresses that I saw. Some things new with tags or very lightly worn. I ended up getting a few pairs of pajamas for my toddler son, they looked like new and were good brands (one pair were Hanna Anderson, which if you have kids and have ever googled for super cute kid pajamas, you've probably seen her things and they are absolutely adorable but way more expensive than I'd ever buy for my son who grows faster than weeds in July), two pairs coming to a total of $1.50 --what?! I would revisit, if looking for second-hand clothing, but it was not the most well-rounded thrift store, therefore I can only give 4 stars. read more

the man on the phone said they only help homeless people on monday from 8-8:30?? if their mission is to provide emergency shelter for homeless people, then why can't i get this homeless boy off the street into a safe place? there is a flood watch tonight and my heart hurts thinking about how him and all his belongings will have to sit through it, and the next day. i wonder what the salvation army is thinking about. probably how to get more donations. read more

I love the Salvation Army. I know they had to remove some of their donation boxes around town because people were misusing them, and that is just too bad. I wish there had been another option, like better communication with doners. read more

Was so horrible. They said that they can't let my daughter in the restroom but another customer came in ten minutes later and they said it was fine. How could you do that to a 6 year old . If there were negative stars I would give negative 5 stars. Horrible would not recommend. read more

For the brave only. It feels a little depressing inside, the items are crammed together and the florescent lighting doesn't do anything for my complexion...but the staff is nice and greets regulars by name. If you like thrifting, then this is a can't-miss and my guess is that persistence is rewarded. My roommate found a great desk for $5. read more

There is nothing redeeming about this store, I have been to other Salvation Army stores and enjoyed them very much but not the one in Charlottesville. Where to begin? Let's start with the prices. I've seem items with price tags from Walmart, Target, and other large retailers, with a salvation army sticker next to it asking for twice as much. New clothing and shoes are priced ridiculously for a thrift store. Secondly the employees are extremely rude. I was browsing an aisle of clothing when an employee nearly knocked me over and screamed "get out da way" while pushing a cart of items. I was also shortchanged once at this location. I find it ironic that this store has signs everywhere about shoplifting, yet people in need could honestly not afford anything from this store. Maybe if you lower your insane prices your shoplifting problem would resolve itself! Bottom line: Only go to this store if you enjoy laughing at ludicrously marked up used items. Goodwill (on 29 and Pantops) is a MUCH better choice. read more

We bought a dresser that was in perfect condition for 60.00. We had to pick it up couple hours later and when we picked it up, someone stripped the top right drawer!!We will never go back there again !!! Just posted a picture of the dresser. read more

This is the closest thrift shop to my house, so I frequent it, even more so now since I don't want Goodwill to have a monopoly on the secondhand market. The regular prices are somewhat high, but the regular color tag sales bring them down to a competitive price. I went in looking for skirts and found 5 in great condition, so I bought all of them. Also found an adorable upholstered chair for $12. Not a very good shoe selection, but decent selection of women's clothing and household goods. I don't know that it's always managed particularly well (one time I went to donate a nightstand and the back room guy refused to help me get it out of my car because he hadn't clocked in yet), but hey! working at a thrift shop is grueling and thankless work. read more

I've been going to the Charlottesville Salvation Army store for years, and have purchased a lot of beautiful clothing, good books, and useful household items there at very good prices. I generally pay $1 - 4.00 for cashmere, wool, silk, high-quality cotton, and designer things. If you don't like searching through the dross to find the treasure, this store isn't for you; but if you like to browse, it's great! Clothing that hasn't sold in 4 weeks is 50% off and a sign at the front door tells you which tag color is on sale that week. The older reviews here are way out of date and no longer reflect the store as it is now. The staff deals with tons of stuff and lots of people very well. The lighting isn't lovely (this isn't a boutique second-hand store), but it's functional, unlike some thrift stores I've been in, and the front windows let in lots of natural light so you can see the true color of clothing. After another major shuffle in store mgmt. last year and now this Christmas season, another round of staff let go I have no interest in going into this store. It is poorly run and the staff that are still there are at war with the store manager or whatever they call her now. The store is a mess and the pricing is well beyond the means of the people who live around there. Have heard rumors that the store is going to close in 2018. Might not be a bad idea. They throw most of the donations into the dumpster and over price the rest. read more

I love this Salvation Army. I check it out frequently for household items. They can have some nice things come in periodically and the prices can be fair to kind of expensive. What I don't like is that there is one very wealthy local man who comes in quite regularly and grabs up all the good pieces to resell. He was a land developer and now owns a lot of lease properties but still he has to go buy everything of value out from under people who can't otherwise afford nicer things. I wish he'd stop, but I don't know what the store can do about that. read more

Really like this thrift. Much better than the larger SA in Richmond (and comparable to the RVA Goodwill stores). Clean, well organized, and I have never encountered staff who are not friendly and pleasant (though they are sometimes short-staffed). Only thrift I've found in town with working old style TVs. For great deals on basic furniture and household items, watch for their annual "yard sale" shortly after the UVA school year ends. read more

After Goodwill moved into town this store cleaned up their act a lot however it had been a couple of decades and they are still the slums of thrift shopping. But I didn't come here to talk about that. Today I was there with my 4 year old. He needed to use the bathroom but there was a sign on the door that said "out of order". I have my doubts about the truth of that claim but let's go ahead and give them the benefit of the doubt. So I took my son outside and across the parking lot to the most discreet section of bushes I could find. He dropped his shorts and let fly. I turned to see the donations taker unabashedly perving on my son. When he realized he was caught he said in a rude tone of voice that there was a bathroom inside. I am disabled, I use a cane and an assistance dog. I did not gimp my crippled self across this hot parking lot for shits and giggles. Obviously there is a reason we are not useing the indoor restroom and here is a hint, it is not so you can gawk at my son. I brought this situation up at checkout and got literally NO response. I will be a monogamous Goodwill shopper from here on out. read more
