What do you do when you're spent from a hike and need to refuel? Go to a bar of course! The Sandtrap is appropriately right across the street from the golf course and we were drawn to it because of the advertised happy hour with cheap drinks ($2 beers) and dollar tacos! Food/drinks: The beers here were mostly Mexican brands and my friends got happily buzzed off of them. The margaritas were also pretty good. As for the tacos, they made my stomach happy after the hike. There are three varieties of tacos: ground beef, chicken and chorizo. I opted for the chicken and chorizo tacos. You get your choice of hard or soft shell and then you get to put whatever assorted toppings and salsas you want. Oh and don't order the shrimp cocktail. It's $12 and as my friend found out, there were only 4 shrimps in there so she basically paid $3 per shrimp. Just go for the tacos! In places like these, simple is best. Service: Mostly self serve. We sat down at the tables until a waitress came by and said that if we wanted drinks or food, we needed to go up to the bar to order them. Ambience: Very chill place to have a margarita and relax. I mean, we really came across this place unexpectedly. After a bad day of trying to get to the flower gardens and finding out it was closed, we headed back to the mainland and came across this gem. Let's be honest, it looked like some person's backyard that turned into a sidewalk street taco and drink place. but the place was sooooo awesome!!! we asked for a pitcher of margarita. It's a bit of a locals spot. Someone walking by saw that we were checking out all the restaurants and told us about it. Since it was quite a walk from where we were we waited until the next day. $1 tacos and inexpensive drinks. Food was great! We were happy we found it. Seemed to be more locals then tourist but everyone was super friendly. The locals were giving us ideas of other places to visit while we were there. I would eat here again next time I visit. This place is legit. Take this for what it's worth, coming from a Mexican who knows good Mexican food: the Chile Verde Burrito with Carnitas is probably THE best burrito that I have ever had. This is not hyperbole. This is no exaggeration. The burrito, my friends, hungry folk, and followers, was extremely legit. Stuffed with carnitas. And they didn't just toss in some half-done, 'warm enough' carnitas, there were parts of the carnitas in there that were well done / crispy / bien fritas that completely set it off. The chile verde sauce was perfect. Not too spicy, and far from bland. You combine that with the cilantro, beans, onion, and cheese inside, and you have one incredible mouth watering burrito. It is worth coming out to Catalina for it alone. That good. I thought I could put 6 stars due to being elite, but 5 stars will have to do. If you're ever near this restaurant, you are literally doing yourself a disservice if you don't stop by and get some authentic and delicious Mexican food. read more

On a recent trip to Catalina Island, I was craving Mexican food, so I asked a local for a recommendation. Without hesitation, he suggested the Sandtrap. As the rating goes, "Yay! I'm a fan." This place is cute and chill and I liked that it was a short walk away from the harbor and all the hustle-n-bustle. Decent food (I had tacos) and BOMB chips and salsa. Sadly we missed out on the Happy Hour, which is EVERY day with food/drink specials. Guess that means I'll just have to make the trip back to Catalina :) read more

At some point, the term "happy hour" stops being useful. I think when your special spans five hours, you may have hit that time. The Sandtrap could call it "The Miserable Torture Experience" and I'd still want to come back for more, though. $1 tacos went a good long way to putting a smile on my face, and the $19 pitcher of margaritas sealed the deal, putting a capper on an excellent afternoon. I came to this establishment on Saturday July 13, we drove by it in our golf cart, and seen there happy hour starts at 2 which was perfect because everywhere else starts at 3 and our boat leaves at 4:30. Its a somewhat quiet place. Never seemed crowded when we were there. The bartender is friendly and serves good drinks. You choose between either soft or hard shell. We're usually more inclined for soft because we expect all hard shell to be like the ones you get from fast food joints, hard and near stale. But the lady told us to give it a try since they were homemade. So we each picked 1:1. Then we got to choose between chorizo, pork, or beef. The chorizo was well seasoned and tasty. The pork was juicy. After that, you add anything you want from the bar: lettuce, onion, cheese, salsa. The hard shell taco, expecting the worst, was splendid. Thin, crispy, little flaky and delicious. After gobbling down two tacos, what was supposed to be a light snack before dinner, I ordered a few more. The sopes does come with a lot of guacamole too, so that made up for it. I just didn't like the breading that they used.... it didn't taste like how a sopes was supposed to taste. Texture was different and it didn't come with feta cheese on top :( This restaurant is kinda hidden, it's definitely out of the way of all other restaurants. I was enjoying a lovely afternoon driving around Catalina Island in my golf cart when I came upon Sandtrap. Although I was sad that I missed the $1 tacos featured on their happy hour menu since I was a bit early, this place is still great in my book for a quick, affordable meal. Ok so if your a foodie like me, I don't recomend this place. 1st. The drinks I ordered orchata and jamaica tasted nothing like Orchata & Jamaica. 2nd. The tortillas were not good they tasted like bitter wite flower. 3rd. The meat had no flavor bouth the carne asada and carnitas. I also orderd a posole wich was flavorless, and I had to add onion lime and cilantro for it to b ok, I think I could of just bought that canned posole. My mom had the Chile relleno and she was disappointed she said it tasted like if it was microwaved. I don't mean to bash on this place but the flys were just 2 much as well. As far as I know, it is the best deal money wise in Avalon. $1.00 for tacos, three choices of meat like ground beef, chicken, chorizo, shredded beef. Soft drinks are $2, although sometimes the bartender only charged me $1.50. Not too bad, since he gave me 1 free refill. $1.00 for a taco is East LA street prices. Now, I wouldn't say the tacos here are quite that good - for example, there was some gristle in the chicken meat - but, it's still pretty good. I also ordered the carnitas plate, which was HUGE. Enough to feed two adults. The guy next to me ordered one after seeing mine. Location is nice, right across from the golf course. Nice outdoor dining, with a decent amount of shade. There is an indoor eating area, too. The music ranged from I can dig it Mexican party music to I hate it this is ruining my experience bad Mexican rap hip hop. Of course, everyone's musical tastes are different. Usually the music is fine. The women that work here aren't too friendly or seem very happy - but, they do their job, and it's not bad enough to stop me from coming here. Was ok, but what do you expect off of an island restaurant? It was a little further than the normal tourist trap area right as you get off the boat in Avalon, so at least the lines were ok. It was on the way to the botanical garden, around the corner of this big hill where you wouldn't think there would be a restaurant. Got the turkey avocado sandwich for $7 which was a normal turkey sandwich. Dad got an omelet, but all it contained was egg, cheese and potato...not sure that's worth 10 bucks. The outside seating is nice and i read they had happy hour ($1 tacos) after 2pm, which is probably why they had such high yelp ratings, but we were there for breakfast so no dollar tacos for us :( read more

So I heard this place was awesome, and we went for the $1 tacos and it was well....kind of a let down.... The $1 tacos during happy hour are decent and they are $1 and you have a choice of fillings. You pay at the counter and then go over to the taco lady and she will load up the taco and you put your toppings on. I felt a little awkward, since I had tipped at the order window, trying to be a good person, and then there was another tip jar with the taco lady, so I felt like I should tip at both and that made me think these weren't really $1 tacos then...But they were decent, but then the happy hour they said beer was on it so we ordered two and she poured them and then told us the price which clearly was not the happy hour price because it turns out only some of the beers are on happy hour special...you would think she would specify that since the whole reason people really come here is for the happy hour and $1 tacos. And this place is really awkward in the winter at least at happy hour. I guess no one goes to this place then? Yeah it might be a little bit of a hike/drive up to this place which is right across the street from the golf course, but the value can't be beat. They have 3 different types of tacos each day that are featured on the dollar menu and are quite tasty. During my time on the island, I had 4 different types of tacos. My favorite type was shredded beef, followed by shredded chicken, and chorizo. I was not that big of a fan of the ground beef, but it was still decent. Overall, this is a great spot to go for a little snack before hitting up other neighborhood happy hours and they have a bar in the back with a TV to boot.
