The food was great and the drinks were good, but the payment system made the experience uncomfortable. It seems like everything is tied to a specific server, so if you move around the restaurant, go upstairs, play pickleball or volleyball, or sit in a different area, you have to keep track of who originally served you. That can be confusing for customers and seems stressful for staff too. I felt embarrassed when I went downstairs to pay for the beers we had before going upstairs, and the waitress came down worried as if we had walked out without paying. I was honestly just trying to do the right thing and close out our bill. Then the bartender/manager asked me if I could point out who the original waitress was, but I didn't see her on the floor. That made me feel like I was being treated as the problem, when I was simply trying to pay. Overall, the food, drinks, and atmosphere were enjoyable, but the payment process could be much smoother. This is a cool place! Came here for the Office trivia. I like that they had the scores on the tv! No one greeted us when we came in so I was a little confused. Guess it's seat yourself! The waitress told us they were running behind so I'm glad she let us know. I love coming to The Sandbox off Barry Road in Kansas City! Every time we go, it's such a fun vibe. The burger I ordered was SO good juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Definitely one of the best I've had in the area! The service is always great too. The staff is super friendly, attentive, and makes sure you have everything you need without feeling rushed. At almost 30 years old with a bridal shower the OWNER came to our table, was so incredibly disrespectful, and claimed that the whole bridal party was underage. What a beautiful summer Sunday morning I have woken up to! And as I'm sitting around rubbing the sleep out of my eyes, I feel this rumbling, this shaking of the windows. rattling walls that were creaking loudly, and I'm thinking to myself "I'm in Kansas City we can have an earthquake." Then I realize it's my belly growling. So, I offered to give it its normal breakfast of a toasted English muffin with cheese and coffee and that was rejected outright. That means I have to leave my home and go out into the cold cruel world. So, I climb into the shower and put a spit shine on my behind! Getting dressed, I put on my best Sunday go to meeting cutoffs and a good clean t-shirt and head over to a box that is filled with sand. And as I arrive at my destination, I exit the car and walk up and open the door to The Sandbox! Strolling up to the bar I barely have my keister situated on a bar stool when the bar keep comes up and tells me "Welcome back hon, we've got some new items on our menu." Really! It appears as if they have added two burritos, some tacos and a pork chop for breakfast. I ended up going with the burrito, when I saw what it looked like. They had one of each of them out to look at for samples so you could see what you were getting. And I thought to myself I can polish that bad off, boy oh boy was I ever wrong! They take it tortilla wrapper, fill it with scrambled eggs, bell peppers, onion, ham, with some potatoes and then smothered in a sauce and serve it on a bed of breakfast potatoes. Don't even try to pick it up, don't even think about picking it up, this is a knife fork burrito only. And unfortunately, I could not polish it off the way I thought I could. Another case of my eyes being bigger than my belly. On this beautiful day they had both garage doors open and a gentle warm, comfortable breeze came through, making my breakfast even better. My family was going to try this place tonight. We sat down at a table, yes they were busy. We waited only five minutes and the waitress told us that she would be right with us. A couple minutes went by and she came back with menus and told us that kitchen was busy. I could understand because they were busy in a Friday night. The mixed drinks were made with far too much alcohol. They had 1 server and 1 bartender for the entire top floor during their end of summer Luau so it was taking anywhere from 15-30 minutes to get a beer even. The DJ was good. Then we woke up the next morning to find that the Sandbox had double charged the payment cards for the majority of the people in our party. We came in for NYE Brunch and Music Bingo. We sat back by the bar top at a high top table. Christy our server greeted us promptly and took our drink orders. She checked in on us frequently as we ladies were talking and Bingo had started. We finally decided on our brunch items. 2 of us got the Sandbox Chilaquiles(Chicken) it was cubed I think it would be better with shredded chicken but it was still good. Our eggs were a little over done but it was fine. My sister ordered the Breakfast Platter which was very filling. I had bloody Mary's which you could go garnish yourself at the Bloody Mary bar. They had mimosas, tipsy coffee and my friend ordered a pain killer. The atmosphere was fun it was a bit chilly inside so I ordered a reg coffee to warm up. When we ordered our food we were told the kitchen was backed up and it would be 30 minutes...not a problem. 45 minutes later servers tried to deliver other tables orders to our table. Outside games include pickle ball, sand volleyball and cornhole. We ordered two items for lunch and after 15 minutes the waitress came back to tell us most items were not available as they didn't have any. We could not get a Rueben sandwich, a Cuban sandwich, a French dip sandwich or salmon. So we settled for a burger and chicken strips. The burger was seasoned and cooked well. It was HUGE. I have been here a couple times but haven't left a review. I came on a very rainy Saturday evening. With the rain, all of the fun outdoor activities were closed. The parking lot was pretty full to my surprise and when inside it's seat yourself which I found to be a little crazy. I was able to find a table to wait for my friend to join me. I was immediately greeted and asked for a water. After that my server changed and my new server Makenna was super awesome! She was very patient and kept checking in while I waited on my friend. After my friend arrived we asked for Makennas drink recommendations. I ended up getting a shot of casaamiagos and my friend got their signature tropical shot. I also had a couple of Palomas and modelos and my friend had 1 summer Mai Tai and 2 blue mfers and modelos. We shared the loaded nachos. The nachos were very, very mediocre at best. The chicken definitely came out of a can and the salsa they provide is tiny. We got an extra salsa which they charge 80 cents for. I give this place a4 because they played good music, drinks aren't terribly overpriced and Makenna gave grade A service. The nachos knock down a star. If this is how Oscar behaves on the floor, in full view of customers, it's hard to imagine the culture behind the scenes. Yep, SANDBLASTING IS COOL. Don't park your car near this place; I did on a windy day, and with the way the place is built near the highway basically on a hill, the sand trap will decimate your face, you'll have sand in your toes, your hair, your eyes, your engine, your paint. I don't know who approved building this place atop a mountain, but they should be jailed. The inside feels like a bar on a lake somewhere. It's deep, you get lost, and when you make it outside their caged fire-hazard, single in and out point sand hole, you'll only find trash everywhere, and in my case a family of trapped Geese with no one concerned about it between delivering drinks and makin' them tips... If so, they will bring everyone's food out then tell you they ran out of your item. The ambiance is what you would expect from a bar with sand volleyball courts. It's loud, overly loud, and it's crowded. Also, if you want to bring your children in for food that won't happen. They don't allow kids under 10. However, if you want to bring your teenager in for a night of underage drinking this would be the spot for it. There's plenty of other underage age drinkers there for your teenager to hang out with. We tried to go here a couple weeks ago for brunch. As we walked in, an employee was walking out to take a smoke break...didn't acknowledge us. Thought we would try the Sunday Brunch menu. I ordered Biscuits and Gravy as well as 2 eggs over medium. My wife had the Mega Burrito. I'll start with the coffee. Was so strong and bitter even Chuck Norris wouldn't face it. Zero sausage in the gravy and it had a yellowish tint. Upon tasting it was obvious this was made with chicken bouillon. The eggs looked like they must have been put on first thing and cooked for 15 min. The yolks were as hard as Chinese arithmetic and the whites had more lace than my wife's underwear drawer. The Mega Burrito was meh at best. She had to use a knife to saw through the tortilla. Service was ok but they take your card and start you a tab like you're at a bar (which you kind of are). It's not like people are going to run out on a breakfast tab. Then no one explains that when you want to get your bill and pay it, you have to go up to the bar and request even though the servers use an handheld device to place your order and swipe your card. The place was rather loud as well. Probably would be acceptable place to dine if you had a raging hangover from the night before and needed something cheap to expel the demons. read more
