I'm normally an optimist, but in this case Seaport makes me optimistically pessimistic. South Street Seaport has been a mainstay of FiDi for as long as I've been born. Between the shops, the restaurants, and of course the Mall on Pier 17, the draw, at least for tourists are typically the boats docked here. Sure, I've been here since my childhood, but there isn't a single (native) New Yorker you can ask that can tell you Seaport is one of their destinations. That's sad given that there's so much potential. In the years GGP ran the mall into the ground, development had been stagnant, and truly a failure under their watch. Who can blame them? They were bankrupt. With Howard Hughes taking the reigns, new leadership will help drive redevelopment efforts to make Seaport actually cool to visit, not just for tourists, but residents. I'm actually more surprised there's no talk of a food hall here. It's proximity to Wall St is too close to ignore. That being said, you can still take in the great views of the city, New York harbor, and the Brooklyn Bridge from this vantage point. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed the south street seaport. This used to be one of my favorite places to visit in the summer. I used to attend the after work events here where they played different types of music and people danced or just chilled by the water. There's an array of restaurants that you can check out or bring your own brown bag and enjoy lunch/dinner sitting but the water with views of the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan skyline. The last time I was there I was surprised at how developed it was since Hurricane Sandy. They have a newer modern mall with typical stores you see in other malls. However, shopping is shopping and I love to shop. You can find all types of street entertainment, there are a few museums. Years ago I checked out Bodies exhibition with my godson and it was pretty interesting. There's always something to do, see or just being in the experience of people and the beautiful surroundings make this place a must see in NYC for the first time or must see again and again to observe something different. read more

I'm fairly certain that every single review of South Street Seaport on Yelp contains the word "touristy". This one is no different. I've lived in NYC for over two years now, and I somehow managed to dodge this "tourist trap" until just this past weekend. For the record, I'm upset that I didn't come here sooner. SSS* is unlike any other place in all of NYC. One step into these parts and you truly feel like you're in a different world. I LOVE living in the city pretty much more than I love anything in the entire world, but sometimes I need to get away. Or, in this case, fool myself into believing that I'm getting away. I had to dodge quite a few annoying tourists, but that's a small price to pay for a few hours of peaceful seaside bliss. I would imagine that the crowds are busier during the warmer months, so come take advantage of the "off season" while you can. There are cutesy shops, a few museums [namely the South Street Seaport Museum and the Bodies Exhibition], decent places to grab a bite, wicked photo ops [sailboats with the NYC skyline in the background?], and COBBLESTONE FREAKIN' STREETS. Nice collection of shops and cafes along the river. You can sign up for harbor tours and cruises, but come early as the buses of tourists drop off their loads throughout the day. The Seaport is one area and across the road is another area of more upscale restaurants and stores. Nice place to roam around in the evenings or for lunch. Nice views of NYC landmarks, like the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. Can be really cold in the winter with the wind blowing so you will appreciate the many places to have a coffee or other beverage while sitting to people watch from a warm interior table. read more

For my 300th review, I proud to discuss a lovely example of NYC's resiliency. The South Street Seaport, located way downtown, was all but ground zero during Hurricane Sandy. Not to mention being a stone's throw from the Towers. But it keeps bouncing back and getting better than ever. The Seaport is (kinda) newly renovated and soooo much nicer than it used to be. There's lots of stores, like Abercrombie and Coach, lots of restaurants and sometimes Smorgusburg is here! Criticisms of the Seaport might be that it's touristy and expensive but what the Hell isn't? The open seating promenade area is so much fun to sit and people watch or meet a friend for lunch on a business day. They also sell alcohol to make for fun outdoor promenade dranking. There's a couple fun bars just a block away to keep the party going. No longer exclusively a port to welcome ships carrying cargo, the Seaport has a rich history and evolution. Come, enjoy and take some amazing photos. read more

Interesting and fun place! They sell many unique and cool stuff - small tools, books, decorations etc. like carbon water filters, ceramic bowls, books on egg/ice cream/ etc.. It's fun to stop by and they allow you to play with stuff. A bit pricy tho. read more

Made it here for the first time last weekend... such a cute area to walk around. We found cute, crafty items to buy at Fulton Stall Market, amazing gelato, and lots of stalls to buy cheap purses, sunglasses, and touristy things. There was also a great view of the water, and a chance to trapeze (which we didn't do, but I wanted to!). It was a little touristy, and all the guys walking around bags of fake purses was annoying. It was really easy to catch a taxi once we decided to move on to the next item on our agenda. I agree with some of the other reviews- it reminded us of Faneuil Hall in Boston. Definitely worth a visit if you haven't been here before! read more

Running through the SouthStreet Seaport brings back some great memories. The landscape however, has completely changed. The old stone brick roads are gone; replaced with cement. A new FDR bar is built for nice outdoor after work drinks. The old South Street Seaport mall has been torn down and I'm hoping something greater will replace it. Goodbye Banana Republic, Uno's, Sharper Image, Structure, butterfly exhibit, footlocker and champs, candy store and the painting store where you tried to stare long enough to see an image. Hurry and bring back the South Street Seaport! read more

Mall on the East River. It is rare that you get to play tourist in your own city, but since I had to show some peeps around this weekend, I got to play one. We hit the South Street Seaport for some views of the East River and such. The place is really nothing more than a 3 floor collection of a crap food court and shopping, with a lot of tourist stuff tossed in along the floor for good measure. The pier itself also contains some small food joints and although the weather wasn't the greatest, there were a lot of people out. Really not much to do there other than shop or eat and take some pictures with the Brooklyn Bridge as a backdrop. Parking lots around the area. read more

It's certainly a total tourist trap but it's a bit of a guilty pleasure. Especially during the summer time. Perhaps it's the cobble stone paved walkways that remind me of an area of my hometown, but it instills a sense of warmth with me. Eh, to me, South Street Seaport is rather manufactured and too touristy. Plus, you can find most of these shops elsewhere. It just seems a bit too plastic, like Disney World. Then again, obviously you can bang out all your shopping in one afternoon with a great view of Brooklyn and some decent eats (if you use Yelp beforehand to find the good spots). Additionally, the Bones exhibit is pretty neat. Otherwise, I, personally, wouldn't go out of my way to hang out here. read more

Constantly crammed full with tourists, smelling of rotting sea on humid days, the epitome of rampant capitalism in the shining mall that is identical to all the malls in the rest of America. (Why come here if you're a tourist and spend money in the same stores on the same items that you know from back home?) The oversized nipple of an androgynous Abercrombie ad model watches you with its pale areola as you proceed along the cobblestones of Fulton Street toward the Seaport. This place is less like a collection of tourist traps and more like an entire war strategy. The food in the mall food court sucks as well, even with the people wielding toothpicks lanced with chicken morsels and shouting "yummy yummy!" enthusiastically as you pass. Still and all, South Street Seaport has got its hold on me. Beyond the brand name shops and pricey restaurants, it's hard not to see that the area has got history and character. The massive ships with their profusions of ropes, the East River fluttering disgustingly green, downtown buildings looming behind it all... But forget about coming here on the 4th of July for fireworks. You will probably suffer from panic attacks from the disgusting zoo that it becomes. read more

The South Street Seaport is a cool place to visit if you're in NYC in the downtown area. It's not a main shopping or eating destination per se (although you can get a decent drink). However, contrary to some reviews, I definitely think this is a worthy destination, especially given recent renovations post Hurricane Sandy. The seaport has had a facelift over the years, with some additions of new shops and restaurants. Many locals call it touristy and that's probably a fair description, but it's New York...tourists are everywhere, all of the time. Personally, I like the seaport for the views of East River, Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. There's a bit of nostalgia as well because I used to come here years ago and have fond memories. Depending on the time of day and the season, if you visit during off times it's not as crowded. This is also a great place to watch the 4th of July fireworks, which occur right over East River! Adios to Summer 2017 ~ it was fun while it lasted! Summer dinners, concerts, movies, Friday night ping pong - all in one area! Always a good vibe and a nice treat after a long day. Four stars because the prices are a bit steep. At the outdoor beer spot, I think I paid $50 for 3 gin and tonics served in plastic cups. But hey - it's Manhattan and I'm sure I have paid more for less. Service was always great and I would definitely recommend trying the bar in the movie theater. Yes - in the theater. The mixers are all made in-house and the mixologist made my girlfriend and I some really yummy somethings during a movie bathroom break. Definitely recommend and looking forward to seeing what winter offers :) read more

When it comes to tourists, it's honestly a love/hate thing on my end. On one hand, I adore the hell out of them, because they bring in a shit load of money for the city. Yet, on the other hand, they can be super annoying when they stop you dead on your track just to take a few freaking photos (understandably of course). But here at South Street Seaport, it a definitely exception because tourists and locals alike can positively and simultaneous enjoy this outdoor space without bumping into personal space. I usually don't come here offended, but when I do, I find myself enjoying their stores and just walking around and appreciating the history, architect and structure that helped built and expanded my beloved city that I call home. read more

I've been here many times and even came here on a school field trip in middle school. But I'm definitely not sick of it. The view of Brooklyn is always so relaxing and there's also a lot of stores around to shop. It is quite crowded since a lot of tourists come here. If you go here at night time when all the stores are closed, it's really relaxing to sit outside the benches and just admire the view of the bridges. read more

The south street seaport has been a great area for years. Right by the edge of Manhattan you can go shop, go to the mall, grab a bite, take a boat ride, or even go to the museum there. The port also has an amazing view of dumbo, which is only a bridge away! During the summer there are movie screenings on the pier serving for a good spot to hang out with friends. If you are tourist, you must visit this location. read more

It's quite a sight to see and browse in the daylight, but night might extend the shadows in such a way that you'll nominate this as the #2 spot to shoot a murder scene! (see my review of the Smith & 9th train station for #1 ::shivers::). The mall that is a quick left from the parked ships is really a great tourist trap to by all the same nick-nacks you can find in Chinatown but for wayyyy cheaper. Go see the Bodies exhibit if you haven't already, and then after, if you can bare to eat, take your pick! A great day out in the city! read more

Came here recently after not being here since I was a kid... South Street Seaport are one of those gems of NYC that you have to experience for yourself. Along the piers of NYC Harbor, you have previous used historical ships, nice restaurants for kids as well as adults and an AMAZING view of Brooklyn, Queens, Jersey and downtown Manhattan. First time checking out the Seaport District as a friend of mine recently moved down to FiDi. It's beautiful in the summer! Stone Street is pretty to behold with its twinkling lights and chitter chatter from young people in the bars around. Walking onto the pier, you pass by the really big "pirate boat" like ship that's parked in the water next to the pier, and you can look out at I want to say Long Island? Staten Island? Not sure, but there is a water taxi that you can take into Queens for the price of a subway swipe, which is pretty cool. It's very date-material, and beautiful to walk around in when the sun is setting or rising. It's pretty far south in Manhattan, but worth a stroll through if you're in the area! read more

South Street Seaport is certainly touristy which is why it doesn't overly appeal to me! It beckons why I went at roughly 830am on Saturday morning! I'd certainly rather have the more local food scene, and not that interested in the touristy gift shops. The views and history of the area are well worth your visit though, and should certainly guide you here.....early in the morning before the crowds show up! read more

Went to Pier 17 to listen to the remixed Billie Holiday show. The event was free and from what I understand, this is happens often. We sat on hammocks at the water's edge overlooking brooklyn. it was a great place to hang and get away from humidity and indulge in the hudson breezes. Really nice area in Lower Manhattan to visit and it's next to the Financial District. Quite a few historic buildings and the parts of the Seaport are still under construction and repairs due to Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Their historic ships are nice to check out as well. read more

Its one of Manhattan's biggest attractions and a portal to nightlife, shopping, boating, and people watching. Its one of the liveliest places in summer with a good presence of tourists and locals, and a secondary (preferred) spot to score TKTS Broadway tickets. Everything is expensive here from the boat tours, retail stores, to the eateries that exist in this one large pier. One thing that makes this area confusing are the lack of signs for various peers, restaurant directories, making this a not-so-friendly meet up spot. Nonetheless it has its charm and is undeniably one of the New York's most solid places to visit. Its family friendly and possibly even a good date spot. Its certainly an alternative area to soak in the sun or to partake in night time festivities. read more

Yes, this is just some commercialized place that's a big mall. Hey, at least it's a nice place to take someone if you're itching to do some shopping. NYC seems to be lacking in the department of huge indoor malls. The SSS attempts to fill that gap. They don't have any huge mega anchors (haha, pardon the pun) like a Macy's or Nordstrom, but they do have a bunch of smaller stores here. I think the biggest I saw was Express. The place kind of reminds me of the Baltimore Inner Harbor, or even Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco since they do have a few big ol boats you can tour and take pictures next to. Come here if you have a few extra days to spare and have run out of touristy things to do. read more

Always a nice relatively quiet spot to go all year. It's best in the summer because it's more lively. They have a good balance of small shops and restaurants along with outdoor venues (movie nights, ice skating, mini food fairs) The mall which I was never a big fan of is now gone and will be replaced with something swankier in a few years. In the meantime, enjoy it's quaintness while it lasts. read more

TOURIST CENTRAL, but close to home. Don't come here if you easily get annoyed by people looking lost, asking directions and millions of vendors trying to sell you things. I kind of am entertained by it. :) South Street Seaport provides many things though - gorgeous views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, water views, several spots for happy hour and mediocre shopping. I've tried several of the restaurants - not very impressed. Come here with a full belly, camera, and a good attitude. read more

I love South Street Seaport. There's a cute dog park that makes my dog smile and gets him exercise while i get to relax and stare at the water. There are constant festivals and foodie events where I can eat till I'm content (just recently they had food truck festivals two weeks in a row) Always has these sponsorships for races for different charities that start off at Seaport. The farmers markets on Saturday and Sunday are the cutest. I wish it was expanded more so we can be like Smorgasbourg but it has it's own novelty. I always see Food Tv stars strolling through Then now they built this great place to relax with benches right on the pier. If you're really in the mood for a run you can go underneath the bridge by the seaport all the way up the east side past the parks and loop around back to the amazing Seaport. read more

Seaport is PERFECT for an outdoor activity in NYC that is not Central Park. A group of us headed over for a Sunday afternoon and were not left disappointment. There's a light breeze coming off of the water so it's the ideal location for a day time get together. The location is perfect for practically everyone, 20 minutes from BK, 30 from the upper east so it was a great middle ground. There were a ton of food truck and sit town lunch/dinner options as well. Per usual, the prices for drinks were a little steep ($14-17) but that is to be expected when you have a view. read more

This is one of my favorite places to visit. It is like a small suburban mall with the various shops and food court. However, unlike a suburban mall, you have great views here, especially during the evening. On north side, you can see the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge. On the east side, there is Brooklyn with the parks and the promenade. On the south side, we have a view of Governors Island. The food at the food court is mediocre but that's sort of expected. Still have to try one of the sit down restaurants someday. read more

Not the kind of place I would go every weekend, but definitely a nice change of scenery. Well, it's all very um, hipster, bohemian, whatever it's called these days...but not bad. Lot more eateries, bars, pubs, sweet shops, cycle hires, etc. than before but it looks good. I'll spend a bit more time down here on my next visit and maybe the shopping centre will have some new attractions. read more
