On a trip to Memphis, my husband and I found this menu and were intrigued. We read that the chef who opened it 11 years ago was named o e of the top new chefs in the state I believe. It looks to be an old house converted into a restaurant, it is cute inside, they kept the fireplace. Awesome little outdoor patio in the back. Upon a quick yelp search for a lunch spot we happened upon this Memphis gem! What a lucky find! This elevated southern restaurant is located in a cute, converted home. It far exceeded most of the meals I've had in New Orleans or Savanna! We had The irrationally good BBQ shrimp (appropriately named), the andouille crawfish pimento cheese fries (yep) and the best debris beef roast Po'Boy. I would honestly fly back to Memphis for the food here. Kelly English I need a cookbook please! I was passing through Memphis on my birthday trip and excited to try Second line. When I came in, the host asked if I had a reservation. I said no and asked how long 2 for outside would take and they said I'd have to wait an hour. I said okay I'll go outside and they said we will let you know if it's earlier than that and I asked if they would notify me via text and the person said no were not going to text you. I was confused and then bewildered by what I read as annoyance but said umm aight I'll wait here then. Eventually a bar area cleared so I sat in anticipation for the patio. After waiting 20 mins (I got a mimosa and said f it ill do take out) a white couple, asked for seating outside and a the host (a different one than the person who greeted me, this person was Black, the person I spoke with was white) went and checked the patio and immediately sat them. I was fuming. Because I ordered food I made a note that I would directly inform the staff when my food arrived. As I waited more, another white couple came asked for 2 on the patio same result. I'm livid now. The white host who said they would inform me when the patio opened before I ordered was nowhere to be found and meanwhile 2 white couples got immediate accommodations ahead of me a Black woman. After they got seated the Black host came and delivered my order, and I let them know what happened the ish was racist whether the other person intended to ignore me or not and let them know I'm only telling that person not because a Black staff member owed me an apology but because their white staff person could not be located by me. This person was very kind, and graciously applied their employee discount to my order even though they were not to blame. To the disrespectful white host who ruined my experience this is on you. The shrimp and grits were phenomenal, a bit too salty but fire. The po boy shrimp sadly wasn't fried to my Moms liking but she was over it following the egregious behavior read more

A friend told me to try out another brunch spot- Second Line in the Overton Sq area, I am glad I did. Service was great, even when they were packed at a busy hour. We started with an shrimp appetizer which seemed popular on the menu. We had the BBQ Shrimp and it was amazing, especially the sauce!!! Omg so great! Came one Sunday for brunch with my mother. I love the atmosphere. They played nothing but motown hits. The patio looked nice but it was a long wait to sit there. Seemed to be a nice hangout spot. The food was good. My mother's beef poboy disappeared in seconds. She said it was absolutely delicious. We also tried the crawfish pimento fries and they were just ok. First time here for me and my friend, and everything we ordered was at the suggestion of our fantastic server, whose name I didn't catch. Got the strawberry orange margarita to start and then continued with the "Do You Think I'm Pretty?" -- don't even remember what was in it, but it tasted like a creamsicle. BBQ shrimp tasted different than I expected, had almost an Indian-esque flavor, but it was great and they serve it with a huge piece of bread for sopping up the extra sauce. So here is an update to my last review. I ordered most of the same items (minus the cheese grits...wasn't going to go down that road again). The new items I tried were the onion rings, which were pretty good, and the hot ham and cheese po boy. The po boy was completely lacking in flavor, so I can't say I would recommend this sandwich. The BBQ Shrimp appetizer was seriously one of the best things I've ever eaten! I think this might be my new favorite restaurant in Memphis. I also had the beef po boy and it was delicious, as well. A fun, charming spot! Update: We went to Second Line tonight to celebrate my birthday because it is (was) my favorite restaurant in town. However, they have changed their menu and increased their prices (none of this is reflected on their website). I tried to order the spinach Madeline as a side like I had in a previous visit, but it is now only offered as an appetizer in dip form with crawfish pieces mixed in. I asked the waitress if they could still do it as a side and she said it was "pre-prepared" like this and they were unable to. So for $14 we received a tiny skillet (smaller than my hand, legitimately) of spinach Madeline and maybe 4-5 small pieces of crawfish. Not worth the price at all! My husband and I each ordered the BBQ shrimp and although very tasty, not worth the $18 each for such a small portion of shrimp. I'm so frustrated by these changes in the menu and I write this not to slam on this restaurant, but as a plea to the owner to please revise the menu changes! We spent $64 and left hungry. This was our first visit and it was a mixed bag. The sweet heat wings as our appetizer were great. Nice size wings and the sauce was not overpowering...would definitely order those again. My wife had the catfish plate...lightly coated and cooked very well...the catfish was nice and tender but was very bland tasting. I tried the fried avocado "stuffed" with crabmeat. While the avocado itself was a nice size and just the right consistency, it was very lacking with the crabmeat. Probably had no more than three, maybe four bites where you can actually taste any crabmeat, let alone detect much of the meat itself...so that dish was disappointing. I have never seen anything like this in all my life...My buddy and I just left a U of M basketball game and went out on the patio to have a late lunch. We sat there for 23:45 and were never even acknowledged... no "be with you in a minute, or sorry we are busy" Just nothing...We watched as the table next to us was served and yet the waiter never even looked at us. It's like we never existed...After 15 minutes of being ignored, I went in and asked the bartender for some service and he said someone will be out there shortly...Nothing happened. When we arrived there was about a 1.5hr wait. I sat at the bar and tried to order 2 different drinks. They couldn't make either drink because they didn't have the ingredients to make them. I finally settled on the blackberry bramble. It was good and waay stiffer than I thought. I was semibuzzed off of that one drink and for $9, not too shabby. I and the cheese fries and meat pies for starters. Both were pretty good. A tiny bit greasy for me but not off-putting. For entrée I had the oyster poboy with cheese grits. I added the fancy ass coleslaw on my sandwich which was an excellent choice! The oysters were crisp and didn't taste overly "fishy". The cheese grits were on point. I'm on a grits kick right now so they satisfied it. For dessert we had the bread putting. That stole the show for me. I would come back and eat just that and be completely happy. The caramel sauce was perfect and the maple took it over the edge. I highly recommend the bread pudding. It could easily be shared by 2-3 people. Our waitress was awesome and attentive. She also knew the menu very well. I was happy to have her and would be happy if I got her again. We did experience the same thing many other people experienced where the chef come around and didn't stop at our table. I would have have given a 4 star but I was sad about the drink situation, no reservations, and wait length. It was also extremely loud inside the restaurant. Hubby & I had dinner there last night. Was fabulous. He had jambalaya and an oyster poboy. I had gumbo and a shrimp poboy. The gumbo roux was creamy and full of flavor. Jambalaya was great. The bread on the poboys is from a bakery in New Orleans and if you're a bread person you'd go just for this. We had high hopes for The Second Line. They were dashed as soon as the food arrived. Cute restaurant. Super friendly bartender. Ridiculously bad food. Now, we were there late in the afternoon. But, send us away if no one is left in the kitchen with any skills. We ordered the highly-touted Andouille + crawfish + pimento cheese fries and I didn't see a crawfish one in the over-heated limp pile of brown that was set before us. I guess they jumped ship for good reason. We ordered (also on recommendation) the Besh barbecue shrimp. John Besh would have a heart attack if he knew they had his name in the menu and were serving his recipe in such an apathetic fashion. They tasted like frozen shrimp boiled too long in a mixture of liquid smoke and sugar. Dear god. They were a mealy, malty mess. After registering our look of tandem disgust, the bartender did have the good grace not to charge us for the shrimp. I did not like the food at all. I am sorry we wasted any of our road trip minutes on this restaurant that obviously does not have kitchen staff who care a whit about their reputation. Having eaten here a few times, I was excited to try the Sunday Steak Night. We were seated quickly and Jimmy did his best to take care of us. The food overall was good, but the steaks and baked potatoes were awful. The steak was ordered "medium" but came out well done and tough. The baked potato was hard and not cooked completely. There also seemed to be some sort of snafu in the kitchen, as it took almost an hour for us to get our food after we ordered. Not my kind of food being very heavy, but it's very good for the cuisine. Many different varieties of creole basics from Gumbo, to BBQ Shrimp, to catfish. Various sauces from spicy to tartare and a decent selection of brews from in state. The food was very heavy and fried for the most part. Coming at about 5:30 on a weekday, Happy on from 3:00-6:00, it was surprising to see the restaurant all but empty. Service was great and the restaurant is very quaint with an outdoor area and long bar with 2 TVs. Although not my cuisine, the catfish plate was very good and the liver was interesting though wouldn't be my choice order for recommendation. The collard greens were plain but surprisingly tasty. The BBQ shrimp themselves were great, but the the presentation of the dish was poor with some very flaky bred accompanying the dish - not the best complimentary to a BBQ shrimp, soupy dish, in my opinion. Not sure if I would come back. But I would still recommend it if you're looking for some good, filling, fried Creole food that is run by a great chef an don the cheap for the quality. read more

Get you a wholeeeeee lot of the bread to sop up the juice is you get the BBQ shrimp. And the cocktails. Just drink as many as possible. Uber home. I don't know what took me so long to get here- maybe it's the lack of reservations (yes, that is the only factor). This is a Kelly English restaurant, so I came in with high expectations, and was not let down! We were on a double date before a Minglewood Hall show, and stopped in on a Sunday evening where we were delighted to find a semi-full restaurant with no wait. I knew it was a po-boy type restaurant, but these are more like rich-boys! The depth of flavor in everything we had was so deep I needed a scuba suit and head lamp just to find my way out of the lusty eyerolls and "oh-mah-gah"s. We ordered the Besh (NOLA-style BBQ shrimp) Shrimp, and brought the remaining sauce home to sop up with toast. The greens were delicious, my husband was so full that he only ate half the gumbo. I was so happy with the shrimp, and with prior experiences at Iris that I asked our server to surprise me for dinner. What I ended up with was this (here come the eye-rolls again) sumptuous, juicy, tender pot roast and swiss po-boy with a bigger-than-my-face bowl of horseradish and creole mustard flavored skin-on red potato salad. The decor is easy going, with stone, metal, and a handmade "chandelier" in front of some vintage blue bottles and rebar. The football game of the night was playing on a big screen on one side of a dividing wall. So this is what it's like to be inside Kelly English's brain. I like it a lot. Full disclosure: My first visit to The Second Line was extremely less than stellar from a food perspective. With this being an extremely popular spot in Midtown, I had to give it another try. The second go-round was head and shoulders above the first. I started off with the Jambalaya Balls with a remoulade sauce, and followed up with The Verno (made famous by Memphis Radio Personality and host of The Chris Vernon Show Podcast... Chris Vernon). The Jambalaya Balls have a crispy crust that encase some down right amazing jambalaya, and you can never go wrong with remoulade sauce on anything. The Verno was recommended by the bartender and did not disappoint. The Po-boy's main ingredient is chicken thighs paired with lettuce, pickles, and tomato. What sells this sandwich, other than the name, is flat-top toasted butter lathered with butter. 4/5 would recommend. read more
