Our two boys had a bad experience with this camp. One of our sons participated in the one focused…read moreon nutrition and cooking. He got very sick, and was one of three kids who were sent home in one day. We took him to the ER after learning he passed out at camp and after multiple calls with counselors and the owner, we still had no idea what happened to him. His symptoms were that of heat exhaustion or a concussion but the counselors' recalls of what happen were misaligned. In addition, from our son we learned that they had limited outdoor time and when he came home each day before his incident he said "I need to get my energy out, we stayed inside most of the day". I also noticed that the camper to counselor ratio was not great and was skeptical about sending both boys the following week. The next week we decided to send both boys to keep our schedules intact (I realize we should not have sent them after week one's incident) and they complained about the camp each day, saying they were stuck inside all day and they didn't do many activities. They also said the facilities were cramped and "dirty". On Wednesday there was a "suspected" lice outbreak. We pulled them out of the camp on Wednesday and they didn't attend the final days. Finally, unbeknownst to the camp counselors, our son exchanged one of his crocs with a new friends. We communicated with the counselors and owner to exchange the shoes and they were unwilling to help. They actually never replied to multiple emails and didn't return our call. Should my son have done that? No, of course not and I should have noticed before we headed home that Wednesday. But the lack of communication when we sought help, and the lack of oversight from their hired staff gives indication that the camp isn't run well and is overprescribed. The name SmartFit Kids is a misleading name for a camp that neither focuses on development, health or safety.

The staff are exceptionally caring and thoughtful in their guidance of my children. We love the Montessori environment because my children have thrived here for the last two years. Beyond the classroom, The Journey School had cultivated a nurturing community that brings the staff, students and families together. With community events, parent education nights, and so much more, we feel like we are a part of supportive family. Ms. Melissa and Ms. Hanna are amazing leaders who listen and pivot when needed. They really listen; the moral compass of the school is the child. Their communication has been excellent and they take great care of our son. We particularly like the SproutAbout app which provides regular activity updates on everything from bottle feeding to activities which makes us feel like we are involved even while away and provides a sense of security in understanding what transpires during the day. You know, actually having someone who LIKES babies taking care of babies! The new instructors were Ms. Cathy and Ms. Irene, both of whom seemed to care greatly for each individual baby and his/her needs. The care for better with them. My baby grew and started interacting better, and those two continued to encourage her to explore while maintaining a watchful, safety eye. I do still feel that the pre-toddlers are a little old for that room. I know some places move the babies out to a different room when they're 12 months AND can walk. My only other complaint, and it's not so much the staff, but in the summer, there are quite a number of ants inside the rooms. I'm sure that just comes with the location. Or maybe Fort Meade can put it in their budget to update the building.

The teachers are real MCPS teachers who know the curriculum well. A few days before camp started, the instructor called me and asked about their strengths and struggles. The daily activities and curriculum were tailored to the specific needs and capabilities of our kids. The staff was fully able to manage our energetic kids without a problem, and infuse fun into learning. At the end of the week-long session, I had a private conference with the teacher where we reviewed the actual objectives covered and specific feedback on each kid. I also received a written report, which was very useful. I highly recommended Winston Learning; not just to prevent summer slump, but also as enrichment to get ahead before the school year starts. As a parent, I was satisfied with the program, and, more importantly, my kids truly enjoyed their time at Winston Learning. They even asked us to send them again this summer!
