The Shady Llama is a great place to go check out! [[HIGHLIGHT]]This Beer Garden is located outside of Austin in Hill Country.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] When we were poking around looking for breweries in the area on Yelp we came across The Shady Llama! This place doesn't make their own beer but they have lots of guest taps for breweries in the surrounding area. It's a good variety of beers to choose from and it looks like there is at least one food truck available sometimes in case you get hungry. The main draw for why we came here was to see the llamas and indeed we dis see some. One of them gave us some attitude and then sauntered off down a hill, taking it's less moody companion with it. They were funny and with the attitude I got and the name of the place I posted the Eminem song "My Name Is" where the lyrics "Slim Shady" get mentioned on Instagram because I thought it was all quite fitting. I've wanted to come to Shady Llama for years, and we finally made it out yesterday. I am so disappointed in myself for not coming all the time before this, because Shady Llama is EXCELLENT! First, the staff members are very friendly and know everything there is to know about their available wine and brews. I love that almost all (if not all) are local sips - it's really great to see all of these different places in Wimberley/Dripping Springs/Spicewood support each other. Just another reason why I love Hill Country! When I saw Lazarus Rice Lager and St. Elmo, my gluten free heart skipped a beat, because both of those brews have been treated with the enzyme that makes the brews (normally) OK for those who are gluten sensitive but not for those with celiacs. I don't miss beer, but those two brews are too delicious to pass up when I see them on tap! We also tried the Spicewood wine flight, which was one of the best wine flights I've ever had, and I cannot wait to go buy bottles of each to bring home. All 3 were delicious, crisp, robust, and beautifully paired with each other in the flight. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The views were beautiful. Beautiful is honestly an understatement. What a special find! I can't recommend this place enough. We came really early on a Saturday morning and went on the guided hike of the property. They have an assortment of the Texas native plants labeled along the walk. It was a fairly easy walk. Some of it required good shoes because it is the Hill Country, of course. We didn't see the miniature donkeys or the llamas while we were walking, but they were all back in the pen near the bar and the seating area. So they gave us some feed to give the llamas. Everyone was just so friendly and kind. They put a great deal of thought into every aspect of the Shady Llama. Mark your calendar for a visit to the Shady Llama! This is a wonderful family owned beer garden that offers a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy a beautiful sunset, feed a llama, or watch the donkeys meander up the hillside. They don't make any of their beer, cider, or wine - but their rotation is always from Texas companies and the staff are very knowledgeable! I don't usually think about this place for a wine night it feels more "masculine, college causal, or kids playing" depending on when you visit. But next time I will try some wine and pick a spot to enjoy a romantic sunset. It would be nice to have a kid free wine night with some nice music. Trivia is on Thursday nights - the manager is very nice and does a good job but imho it could be more interactive and entertaining. It is your standard "read the questions kind of thing" and I think themed trivia is much more fun! With daylight savings trivia is now at 7:00 pm so it makes it a little easier to get there after work. There are 2 food trucks on site but it would be nice to have different food trucks rotate through or have the bar offer a variety of snacks. Definitely check IG for updates about music, hours, etc - but they do not answer questions from social media. And they don't really post updates to their website that often. Parking is Extremely limited on the weekends so be prepared. If the lot is full go down the road a couple of minutes to Ghost Note Brewing - they are a family owned beer garden as well but have much more parking. Very different styles but both are great and worth the trip! I would say the major drawback is they close very early. Just when the temp's finally cool off it is time to go! Please show your support for them to stay open later so we can enjoy the hill country breezes and not feel rushed. It would be nice to be able to schedule a "feeding" with the animals bc I have been a dozen times and have never gotten to give them a snack! The bathrooms are very clean but on busy days you might get stuck with a porta potty if you can't wait Overall a very relaxing atmosphere and something good is always on tap! We decided to checkout the shady llama yesterday after meeting for drinks in downtown Wimberley. It was nice to get away from the crowds and traffic and I really enjoyed our time at the llama. They have a huge fenced area past the seating area where the llamas roam as well as a fenced in kids play area near the parking lot. As someone who doesn't have kids, I appreciated not hearing screaming children during our visit. They have about a half dozen fire pits with chairs surrounding them and also a bunch of picnic tables with canopies. I'm not sure there is a better sunset spot in the area and we definitely enjoying watching it. For drinks, they have a solid selection of craft beer, as well as wine and recent made mulled wine, which was our favorite since it was a tad chilly out in the shade. They have different food truck options and we got the banh mi. It was good and overall the food was decent but likely not worth the visit on its own. read more

Visited this past weekend and fell in love with this family friendly brewery! Good brews, an on-site food truck, kids play area, and adorable llamas - what more can you ask for? The property is beautifully maintained with ample seating. They have a great selection of beers, wine, and non-alcoholic options. On a Sunday afternoon, my husband and I made our way to the Shady Llama to enjoy some local craft brewing. It was a cloudy and overcast day, with spots of rain, but we did not let that deter us. They do offer a wide variety of seating and luckily we found some that was protected from the rain. While we were there, we were fortunate enough to meet three different llamas, although they do not particularly like to be out in the rain. As for the beer, I absolutely enjoyed their variety and ended up trying two different fruited sour beers. My husband loved the variety of beer as well and chose a delicious amber ale. They had food trucks on site, but we were still full from breakfast so we just sat and enjoyed our beer while playing a round of cards. The service was fast and friendly, and the staff were all super engaging. The space is dog and children-friendly, but with the llamas, and rocky terrain, just be sure to keep an eye on both. read more

This place was pretty spectacular. I've been wanting to go for a while and it finally happened! It was in the low 70s and perfect weather. The hill country views are beautiful and I'd imagine sunsets here are gorgeous. Outdoor games available. Dogs on leash are allowed. Lots of seating and an interesting idea on how to hold your seats/table. It was nice not having to worry about somebody taking our spot while playing with the animals. You can also get food for them at the bar. They were pretty gentle and didn't mind selfies. Lots of beer, cider and wine options. I had the sweet Sangria (Messina Hof) and Cherry Cobbler by Martin House. Both delightful and fruity. They have 2 food trucks: Gringas Grub Shak and Kelly's Hill Country BBQ. I went with Kelly's and got the Brisket Elote Parfait and it was so, so good. I want to go back just for that! There were so many options to choose from. There's really something for everyone. (Water cooler is available as well) Seating is on a first come first serve situation went on a Friday during spring break and had no problems at all! The bar staff is very friendly and helpful. Had a great Cubano sandwich from one of the two food trucks, unfortunately the other food truck operator was MIA so we only sampled on of the options. After a long dip at Blue Hole Regional Park, the Shady Llama is a place to go for a quick bite, beer, and incredible views. As soon as you walk in, the chairs and hammocks out provide a nice campfire style vibe. There are a ton of trees to keep you cool, and the view of Hill Country is one of a kind. The Shady Llama, just west of Wimberley on the way toward Dripping Springs on RR12 is a gem of a yard bar offering Texas-based craft brews, soft drinks, & wines with a killer view and a few furry mascots to feed & pet. Our family loves this place. We can each enjoy a tasty beverage we like, have a good lunch from the Gringa's truck we like from Wimberley, and feed some alfalfa to some llamas and burros. There are plenty of socially-distanced places to lounge around the terraced & tree-shaded yard, and everything is outdoors. It's actually perfect for pandemic times. Pro-tip: do not try to come here during any weekend with special events in Wimberley, like Market Days or Rodeo. The parking lot has limited capacity. Lazy Sundays are the best time IMHO. read more

There is nothing shady about this brewery, because it is an absolute 5-star experience. Decided to make the trek to The Shady Llama with a few friends to enjoy some drinks while watching the sunset. Parking at The Shady Llama has a few spots but I can see it getting a bit complicated for parking on the weekends. So for those of y'all who don't like beer, no need to worry as they have a full bar available to your liking. What really makes this spot stand out is that it's spacious enough for you to enjoy your own private bubble even if there might be kids on the grounds. They have a few play areas for kids to explore so it's a great spot to enjoy drinks if anyone in your group has friends. Now the star of the show are the llamas. They have an open area/free roam philosophy so it's not guaranteed for you to see the llamas, but you'll most likely will. Tucked away in the back corner you'll see them hovering in their water pools and eating buckets. This is such a unique spot in the Texas hill country and one that I will visit again. I came here for a friend's birthday party last Saturday afternoon and fell in love with this bar's location and views. It is definitely quite a way out from the larger metro areas nearby, tucked in in the wooded hills of Texas Hill Country; but, the drive there is definitely worth it! The bar is perched on a hill slope with gorgeous views towards the west-southwest, so it's especially beautiful at sunset. The tables are dispersed under tree shades and allow for intimacy although they are easily accessible. The Shady Llama is also family-friendly with the large playground and the llamas that are roaming the property. There's plenty of (unpaved) parking out front. The bar serves an amazing selection of ciders, beers, and wines. Most of them are locally sourced, which is awesome! I tried two of the semi-dry ciders and loved them both. The bartender was happy to give suggestions and seemed very knowledgeable about what's on tap. There were two food trucks behind the bar serving Tex-Mex cuisine. I had the chicken quesadilla and the food was okay. Definitely come for the views, vibes, and drinks. And bring your friends! read more
