They also have almost anything needed for travel photography which is great. The person who helped us was helpful, nice and patient. My only complaint is the customer service is inconsistant. I have no doubt these are competent professionals. However the way i have been treated on the three seperate occations Ive used their services has left me with negative feelings and confusion. To walk in and have customers laughing only for me to be treated to ice and brutal efficency? Id chalk it up to one bad day, but three times in a row? Im not saying this is what it is, but: i am a poc i id like to encourage the workers to consider that for the white patrons to be treated with care amd for me to be treated like trash just raises a red flag for me. Again, im hoping thats not it cus they have poc working for them. But the enviroment just isnt for me anymore. On a technical level, any and all issues ive had with photos, scans, etc are my own fault. . I just cant risk going in there a fourth time and feeling they way i have. I hope i do not get anyone to come for me but my experience was just underwhelming. I was hoping to just get quick and easy service but unfortunately i was treated with the opposite, mind you i was only there to buy a couple rolls of 35mm film. I just was getting bounced around from employee to employee and by the time i finally got an employee to help me out they didnt really seem too interested on assisting me on the film i wanted so decided to just buy a couple but was planning to get a good bunch since i am in town for work. I do understand to an extent because they were busy but like i said i just wanted some 35mm rolls from their decent selections. My purchase should've been quick and simple but unfortunately i got to miss out on the reason why Shutterbug is #1 on portland's film store list. read more

I've dropped off film here a few times. The staff is always very kind, I get scans back the next day every time, and it's not insanely expensive (like some other local options). I'm also newer to film and they've never made me feel silly for not knowing the exact terms or things I'm asking for. I'll keep going here as long as Portland keeps them around! ty. read more

I've been working with Mel's Frame Shop on a framed photo collage. She recommended that I use Shutterbug to email my photos to. I'm practically a Luddite when it comes to uploading my photos to the Shutterbug platform. I had to do everything on my phone because, duh, isn't that where everyone's pictures live? I tried really hard to follow the instructions but things just weren't panning out for me. I had to call for technical assistance. The guy at Shutterbug was awesome and totally patient with me. He got me all straightened out in a jiffy and I was working the site like a pro. I had to order about 28 5x7's and 4 8x10's. The price was so reasonable. I bought my first Nikon camera years ago and since then I have purchased many other items like lenses, flashes, filters and the like. Most of the time it was at one of The Shutterbug stores - first in Salem, once in Lincoln City (now closed, unfortunately), and most recently in Portland. When I decided to migrate to a mirrorless camera I was kind of nervous because it was a big step for me, and kind of expensive. When I finally decided what to get, Sean at the Portland store was instrumental in helping me make the purchase, but more importantly, he gave me lots of help to get started using it. It all went so well that virtually all of my business is now with The Shutterbug's Portland store. Each time I need some help or advice I stop by the store or call and chat with Sean. The best example I can share was about a year ago when we were driving through Portland, and I stopped by to ask about a compact tripod for travel. I had my eye on the new Peak Design tripod, which they carry and had in stock. Sean showed me an alternative product by ProMaster that I was unfamiliar with. After thinking it over, I decided to go with the ProMaster, even though it would have to be ordered. It turned out to be just exactly what I was looking for and I am very happy with it. I am so glad I stopped by and talked to Sean. I have also worked with Kyle and a few others in the Portland store. I have lots of confidence in their expertise, and I have never felt pressured to buy a more expensive product. They don't do "up-selling", like a lot of other stores. All in all, I'm very happy with the service I get from The Shutterbug. I invested in an expensive camera. I was told to come back after Black Friday, and I would receive an additional $100 off. When I came back Shutterbug declined to honor the promise. I also was told that Shutterbug would match best price. Same camera sold for several hundred dollars less on Amazon. Shutterbug declined to match. 3 year warranty on Amazon was 189, 3 year at Shutterbug was 299. I won't shop here again. read more

My polarizing filter got stuck on my camera lens. Since The Shutterbug is around the block from where I stayed, I went there looking for a filter wrench. Unfortunately they did not have a filter wrench in stock, however. Erica offered to try to remove the filter from the lens. What she did was to put a rubber band between the filter and the lens. At that point, she was able to remove the filter from the lens. I asked her for a few rubber bands that she was glad to give me should it happen again. Thanks, Erica, you're a lifesaver. read more

This is the second review I'm posting since my quest saw me needing to pick up inventory at The Shutterbug in Portland as well as in Salem. Most of my business was conducted at the Salem location and Portland was told to hold items, I paid for the items in Salem, and picked them up in Portland. This aspect of the transaction went off without a hitch. Location is very small but well stocked, what impression I got of the staff was that they were friendly, helpful, and well informed, though keep in mind I basically popped in, flashed a receipt, the staff checked it, got me my bag of goodies, and I was off after some small-talk. Not the most thorough impression, so take that as you will, but the impression was a positive one. Location itself is clean, well kept, fairly well lit, and obvious from the street. The store is a bit cramped with inventory which is the flip side of being well stocked, but fortunately the store wasn't too crowded when I showed up, as it wouldn't have taken too many people inside to make moving around a bit of a personal experience. The above reasons are why I'm giving The Shutterbug (Portland) 5 stars, overall a great experience in the store with the staff manning it. The only negatives I experienced I can't blame the store for and are not calculated into the score. That said, these negatives are worth discussing given the location of the store. This is to make sure potential customers have a plan if they intend to visit and are not familiar with the area. Let me emphasize the "not familiar with the area" part: if you already know the state of Portland and are comfortable dealing with it, you can stop reading here. Parking is a pain, and you will pay for the privilege, but that's Portland's fault, and there is a lovely couple that runs a parking lot ("362 SW 10th lot" on the map) if you hang a right on SW 10th, one street past the Southwest Washington Street Graffiti Monument- I mean "park", gigantic "keep out" fences and all. It's a difficult turn to miss if you're looking for it when you take SW Washington past The Shutterbug's location going the only way you're allowed to go. This lot appears to frequently be full, but if you, like me, were only going to be there for around half an hour or less and drive a vehicle that can't get into a garage, they may be able to squeeze you in somewhere. If you drive a vehicle of a more conventional ride-height, there is a garage under the gigantic white building right before you get to SW Washington St (and thus The Shutterbug) via SW Broadway, which seemed to have spaces available. Check the street view on SW Broadway near the intersection with SW Washington where The Shutterbug is, the lot might not show up from the overhead but the massive white building and parking signs are very obvious from the street. If you can get in there, that's the ideal location to park. I also can't blame the business for the state of the city around them, as that would be the governor's, mayor's, and DA's fault. That said, the surrounding area did not feel safe, which is a real shame as the area clearly could clean up very nicely. Given that, keep in mind that it's best to visit when it's bright out and the streets aren't too busy, so after lunch but well before the twilight hours is ideal in my view. It's harder be surprised by potentially predatory eyes when those eyes on the street can't hide in a crowd, so keep your head on a swivel, open your ears to the sounds around you, and don't get too close to the walls when walking in Portland: the opportunist can use the walls against you before you know what happened. For reference, I passed exactly as many sketchy tweaker-looking people as I did normal-looking people while going to and coming back from the store, which given the price of the items you are likely to acquire at a camera store, can a bit of a hair-raising prospect during even the best lit times of day. The further away you have to park, the more of sketchy-looking people you will encounter, hence my suggestion of any lot basically within 3 blocks or less of the store, or by a more concrete metric, about as far as you would be able to sprint to get to your car. This is not a trip for high-heels, loose, or novelty footwear, wear shoes you can easily run in without tripping, just in case. Realistically, you may just want to bring someone with you as backup for the streets if you're unfamiliar with Portland's "quirks", especially if you're picking up some serious equipment. ...Or ask The Shutterbug about shipping options, they were very accommodating in that regard during my dealings with them. ;) Overall, a great little shop, in the middle of a city that has lost its way: 5 stars. read more

They helped us determine various factors that would let us know whether this camera was the right camera for us or not. They were not high pressure or pushy when it came to sales. We also took a photography class with Sean and we found him to be extremely helpful And enjoyable and knowledgeable. Lately I've been hearing people bow down to online while conveniently ignoring its decimation of in-person retail. Yelp is about reviewing and celebrating in-person retail. Shutterbug is an Oregon camera store with under 10 stores across the state. They carry the main lines at very competitive prices. They also have accrssories, bags, filters. They have C41 film processing and in-house printing. They can send out E6 and B&W. I needed a small item and it was under the online price. Some of their camera prices can be competitive with online too! They are a good store to make the acquaintance of if you are interested in photography. read more

At the Convention I attended, I took an investigated photography class and learned a few things I didn't previously know about cameras. The first is that point-and-shoot generated photos will often not meet legal scrutiny. The second is that in certain dirty site situations (e.g., arson, drug labs, etc.), film cameras are still the best. So after class, I headed over to The Shutterbug to look at a Nikon D90 DSLR Camera as a future work consideration. I'm not quite ready to shell out over $1000 for equipment yet, but what I most appreciated about the good folks here, was their problem-solving approach and practical advice that in the end will save me a lot of money. Not only did he take the time to walk me through all of my options including bodies and lenses(I was debating going Sony or Canon) he also supported me after my purchase and even helped me find additional discounts and sales allowing me to stretch my funds even further! I love to support local companies but often it is difficult as their pricing is higher than that of online stores, but that isn't the case here. I just moved to the area about a month ago, I had a bunch of undeveloped film I needed to get processed. This place is so affordable when it comes to film development and prints. And amazing quality too. Like, my photos of took on Fuji film 200 and 400 look absolutely amazing. And next day pick up? This is the only place I'll go from now on.
