In the 1980's when I was new to Portland I purchased equipment and had film developed at Citizens photo. I don't live in that area so a few weeks ago dropped a roll of Ilford Black and white film off at another shop in Beaverton. They do not have a lab but courier their customers film to Citizens. It is very clear it is Ilford black and white film. Citizens developed the film as C-41, a color film process! The film came black blank. I had spent quite a bit of time taking creative shots with my Hasselblad 500 C/M. The owner of Citizens told the shop that couried it to them that he would give me a replacement roll of film! After being very disappointed but courteous about the situation, I conveyed to the store to ask for 5 rolls of film and developing. He said he would discuss it with the owner of Citizens and get back to me. After 10 days I got a call offering me three rolls of film! Out of my frustration I agreed. I was not going to participate in a bartering of what would be fair. This is small thinking for a business. I will be taking my processing and digital scans back to NW Portland. read more

I had the best experience here - friendly folks, clutter (in the best way possible, so many things to peruse and see), and just some good ol' fashioned charm. After trying out everything from bigger conglomerates like Walgreens to other Portland business like Pro Photo Supply and Shutter Bug for my film developing/supply needs, I've come to the conclusion that Citizens Photo is the best. I have been dealing with citizens for many years. They are the best, maybe oldest film and photo lab around. Weird film ( I experiment a lot) shoot strange sizes, types, etc. Always came through. Even when I had my own lab setup, I used them. VIVA FILM!! digital is nice, but film is much better. They also have equipment. Stop by and get your camera porn fix. read more

Incredible place! They have a very friendly, patient (for us non-camera and film development versed people) and knowledgeable staff. We had a bunch of disposable cameras to develop and after looking at a few options in the Portland area I went with Citizen Photo because they were so helpful. They also have an awesome website with all their pricing and even if you don't understand exactly what the pricing means they are more than willing to explain. They also can put any film either onto a flash drive, CD or online which is AWESOME so if you have disposable film like we did and you're not sure how well some of the photos turned out you can be picky this way and print what turned out. Also, as a bonus it's not in downtown Portland but on the east side so parking is MUCH easier which always sways my vote as well. read more

Citizens Photo has been around since the film era. They just moved into this building, so you can scan their earlier reviews. Their focus now is fine digital printing, especially in large formats. I have not used their printing. They are also one of a handful of chemical developers of rolls of film. They run E6, C41 and B&W processing. They also do cross-processing. I stopped by to give them an opportunity to develop and mount some slides. Those are those image squares that older relatives tortured (or delighted) you of their vacation experiences. Seriously though, only the most expensive professional digital cameras today can equal the image quality of that format. Your phone will never come close. Citizen's joins a handful of local outlets have second hand old pro film cameras and the lenses. I think I have reviewed all of them. The old lenses can sometimes surpass today's lenses. Some are much faster (F2.8 and below) for the very low price, some are quirkier - in non-linearities like bokeh, flare and chromatic aberration, and a few are sharper. Most are also much heavier. Heavy metal and heavy glass. But there is a good argument that aluminum lenses will outlast plastic. You have to be able to use older lenses in manual mode or aperture priority on your auto digital camera, with no autofocus. There are websites devoted to using vintage lenses on today's cameras for still and video if you would like to explore that. There is great rivalry between the long-established German optical houses and the quality-obsessed Japanese optical houses. When I was there, they had a massive collection of filters they were clearing out. Filters are glass rings of different colors and coatings with precise threads and diameters in millimeters which screw onto the front of pro photo lenses. Polarizing filters and perhaps ND filters are some of the few that have a place in modern digital photography. There is a small argument that specific filters may be useful in B&W photography for contrast control. The counterargument is that there are inexpensive software plugins from the old filter makers for, say, Lightroom. But filters could be essential if you modify your camera for infrared or ultraviolet photography. But hey, filters could make a great retro Christmas tree ornament on that retro aluminum tree! Citizens also has a free box of old broken cameras, cables and the like. Those items might be good candidates for things children so inclined might want to take apart, or the parts could be good art and jewelry design components. I would also say that the shop doesn't rush anything. So probably not a good spot if you need something developed or printed like right now. "The we run process X on on Friday, picked up the same day" on their website translates to interesting logic like "but that doesn't include mounting, so better come back Monday since we are closed Sunday." But on the other hand you are getting some very experienced eyes on any hands-on corrections that need to be done. read more

Fool me twice. Iv been given the wrong film back twice now. Both rolls from irreplaceable moments traveling. Super bummer.

I came by here a couple times and was really disappointed in the service I received. The staff is particularly unfriendly, and they're 'helpful' only after leaving you feeling like an idiot for not knowing exactly what you need or what you're looking for. Worst of all, I dropped off a large amount of film to be processed by them and when I got it back every single negative was ruined. Like nothing I'd ever seen before kind of ruined. I called to ask about it and again I was met with an abrasive attitude. The only reconciliation they offered was to bring the negatives by the shop so they could "figure out what happened", which to me sounded like they thought it was somehow my fault and wouldn't be willing to consider otherwise. Go elsewhere. The more affordable cost for film developing is not worth the risk of ruined negatives and rude service. read more

I sent 20 rolls in for processing and had them all back in a week, all perfectly processed. I was using Dwaynes Photo in Kansas but Citizens is much cheaper and does a great job. I hope and pray that film will continue to grow in popularity again so they can stay in business. read more

I've used a few different shops around town to develop film, and they do a fine job with that. The last time I went in I made a large order of prints in matte and after I paid I noticed that all of the photos were glossy. I brought this to their attention and was told "that sucks", but not offered any remedy even though they admitted that it was their fault for imputing the order incorrectly. Make sure to double check what you are paying for before handing over payment. read more

I took 5 prints to Citizens Photo and a disc with one photo on it to be reproduced. I asked for two copies of each print plus two prints of the one picture on the disc. They gave me two copies of the print on the disc and two copies of each print. They also put all prints on a disc, which was not requested. Cost: $50. The ability of the people at Citizens Photo to understand basic English is limited. If you use their services, I strongly urge you to write your request in basic English and then insure it is understood. I will never go back. read more

I came here to get a roll of 36 exp film developed at the suggestion of a friend. I went to Blue Moon a few weeks back and wasn't 100% satisfied with how my film came out so I wanted to try this place. - Service was really friendly and prompt. - They offer to scan your photos onto a cd as either tif or jpeg files which Blue Moon didn't offer. - It took 5 days to get my film back which wasn't a problem for me at all. Good to know their hours are convenient to pick up at different times of the day/week. - For tif scans and prints, it cost me $24 which is much more than I was expecting to pay. Overall, I liked the service, and quality of my prints and scans but will try to find a place that can save me a few bucks. read more

I've used Citizens for years for E-6 and C-41 processing for all film formats. They do an excellent job and push processing is accurate. It's one of the few film processors left in Portland and deserves any business people can bring them. The used department has a lot of older equipment, and once in a while there is a gem to find. It's also a great place for spare parts. The staff is knowledgeable, and quirkily Portland. Try paying cash, and you'll get $2 bills and 50-cent pieces as change. While I don't shoot as much film as I used to, I couldn't get by without them. read more
