They did a great job getting me squared away with hands-on knowledge and understanding of one of the latest technology cameras. A long time, Photographer, but I was still bouncing around, looking for the right feeling on which unit to pick. After spending a couple of days going to different shops, I found some good folks at another one of their locations. The next day, I was planning to return to one of those locations when I found this one downtown. Really liked the folks there and they put various models in my hands and we're able to speak intelligently about them and answer all my questions even though I have a high level of knowledge. And they were so patient and helpful when I was starting out with shooting film. They get the job done and my film scans will take (at most!) 48 hours, sometimes same day. I purchased a vintage film camera for my daughter on eBay, and then I brought her here for film. It was a Saturday and only 30 minutes before they closed, but the employee behind the counter (Boyd, I think) was perfectly patient, knowledgeable, and friendly. He walked my daughter through loading a test roll, helped her pick out a good beginner film, and then oversaw her loading of the real roll. We will definitely return! read more

I love this store and this crew! They've always been so helpful with everything, whether it be guiding me on how to use my dad's old Minolta, recommending certain film types for certain aesthetics and lighting situations, or helping me with my photo editing, and not to oversaturate when printing. I purchased my Nikon Z 50 2 from shutterbug and it brought me so much joy so far. They even cleaned out my sensor when I was too hasty in changing lenses and got some micro particles on it. My next plan is to take lessons from the manager there. The best thing about them is the fact that they have zero attitude. I've been to other photography stores where it feels competitive, snarky, and just cold. They have no ego issues here and are just wanting to spread their love of photography and make it accessible to everyone. read more

So I came here the other day as I am visiting family and was interested in getting a new camera. I walked in and they showed me some really great ones and they happen to have a pre-owned one that was amazing for the price and looked brand new. I purchased it and a few accessories and went back to my hotel. The next day I pulled the camera out to put it together and do some test shots and the memory card wouldn't work. So I ubered my self over to the store and it turns out that there needed to be a firmware update, which Unfortunately they did not have the card for. These guys were amazing they called around to some of their other stores to see if they had one, and the one in Portland did. So I went on a little adventure and got my camera fixed. I really appreciate all the work that they went into to find where I could get that firmware update. I will definitely purchase things from them again read more

Another person mentioning the rude older guy is on point. I dropped off film back in December to be developed; they had to send it out which is fine, and I requested to keep my negatives since I didn't know if their digital scans were good quality (spoiler alert; they're not.) I went to pick them up the other day and was greeted (good,) but when trying to explain what I was planning on accomplishing the gentleman's demeanor changed to smarmy and sarcastic. I had to repeat myself and he went over to the desk to check, muttering that he hoped they kept them (to be fair it had been a couple of months but I figured they would have called if they were going to throw them away.) Luckily they were there. I asked if they had any 35mm film on special and he sort of snorted and said, "No, they never go on sale. The price actually just gets higher." Um okay? What about the emails I get featuring film on sale, and the occasional markdowns on expired film? I very much got the vibe I wasn't welcome and that I should be shuttled along. Lame, considering I shoot quite a bit of film and am now sending my rolls down to California where my new lab costs the same AND includes shipping. In a perfect world I would be developing my own film, but I'm not quite at that level yet. To follow up on the quality; the scans from Shutterbug are SUPER grainy and pixelated, while the scans from The Darkroom (mail order lab I use now) are very clean. I am actually going to send the negatives from Shutterbug to Darkroom and will update this review with side by side comparisons because the contrast is night and day. read more

So helpful! We just moved to the area and I was used to having access to several large, full service type camera and video shops in LA. I was pretty upset to turn my Fuji X100V on, even after charging, and no response. I didn't know if I'd have the ease to have someone troubleshoot it easily for me. I stopped in here hoping for the worst, since they didn't really carry or sell my camera here. Absolutely awesome people. Flew into town for a funeral with my Nikon which needed a good cleaning. I called the shutterbug in Salem Oregon to see if they could do the job. The guy said that I should go to their store in Beaverton since that's where the tech is. Called them and they said they might be able to get it done. Showed up and the Salem store had already informed them I was on my way. Gabe took my camera and number and I went to eat breakfast just down the street. Put in an online order for photo prints for our daughter's first birthday. Was emailed in the morning to say prints we're ready. Already rushed from the party prep, getting the prints right at store open fit right in our schedule. Got to the store, were told the prints weren't ready. Hurt our schedule a but but not the end of the world. But then we were told we misread the email and that it was our mistake. Showed the clerk the email telling us our prints were ready. She then told us prints would be ready in an hour and we'd get a discount. Okay, not ideal but acceptable. Two hours later the prints are ready and we're charged full price. Original store person doesn't say a word. Stores like this are the reason camera stores are disappearing. I'll drive well out of my way now so I can avoid this stop for any camera needs. read more

BEST CAMERA/FILM STORE! I will never go anywhere else ! I literally had 34 rolls of film that needed to be developed and after calling 5 other places that were either completely unhelpful or so expensive! I came across this jem! The staff was so helpful and knowledgeable! And not to mention extremely friendly. There prices are unbeatable and totally affordable. This place can be "OK" depending ion who happens to be working the day that you show up. I happen to be a Nikon shooter and it's not been uncommon to go there and find someone who only knows about Sony or Canons. The Manager (John) is knowledgeable across product lines so I try to only come by when I know he'll be there. Shutterbug sells at full retail so you can obviously save big bucks buying on-line. However, I value local businesses and local expertise and am willing to pay extra for it. That said, it's often difficult to justify not buying from Best Buy or Adorama/B&H since most of Shutterbug's sales people really aren't all that helpful or knowledgeable. UPDATE: 3/9/16 Review was 3 stars. Shutterbug rarely responds to my e-mail inquiries. If you go to the store you never know who's going to be working that day. Since I shoot Nikon, I want to talk to a Nikon person..... since it's a flip of the coin whether someone who knows Nikon will be in the shop when I come by and since they do not respond to e-mail, I wound up buying my new D810 on-line. My business was Shutterbug's to lose and they obviously did not value me as a loyal customer, so...... minus one star. Considering the money I spend on equipment, I expect better. read more

I like how fast they are with film development. I always goes to this camera shop because they're close to my house and probably the only camera shop around the area. I only give it 2 stars because of customer service . There's multiple employees working there and most of them are nice except for this one old guy. Every time I go in , I pray to not get him but unfortunately I've been getting him a lot. His attitude towards customers is unacceptable. He is just plain rude and have a frown face all the time. I do love coming here to get my film developed and I do love supporting small business but I might have to go some place else , I honestly don't mind driving far to get my film developed with a better customer service. read more

I have been a Shutterbug customer since the 1970's. Superior service. Most recently, I purchased a Nikon D610 for my daughter living and working in Myanmar. We met in London, and unfortunately the camera malfunctioned. After discussing the issue with the UK Nikon, the only resolution was to return the camera. Unfortunately, bringing the camera home then resending to a country with little assurance that it would arrive safely was a concern. The Shutterbug and in particular Mgr. David Lenker went well beyond what he and Shutterbug had to for me. I received a full refund even after the 7 days due to the unusual circumstances. My daughter repurchased the D610 in the UK and now has a properly working Nikon as she returns home. I was so happy with the service, I purchased a Nikon 3100 and 10-200 lens for my youngest daughter. I had purchased a Sony Nex6 in December '13 and am thrilled with it's performance. Needless to say, I want to thank David Lenker for his assistance in problem solving this issue for my daughter and me. I know I can buy cameras online but have found The Shutterbug to be very competitive and with service I have been receiving for over 30+ years, I only have to go as far as Washington Square-Tigard for assistance. I always feel like I'm getting cased when I walk into this shop. Customer service is generally good, but rarely goes out of their way. The prices are far above that of other camera shops in the area, but at least they are cheaper than the national chains. They need to move away from doing commission-based sales -- it shows in how they treat their customers. +1 star for one employee who was willing to help me out when I came in to try out a lens they didn't normally stock. -4 stars for the 10 other poor experiences I've had walking into this store. I've never purchased a camera before, always thinking oh I'll just take pictures with my phone. My wife and I are headed to Italy and our friends referred us here to pick up a starter camera. John helped us, and the service was amazing. He walked us through the most basic of cameras all the way up to something more advanced. Always giving us advice, not trying to sell. Then after we selected a camera, he walked us through way more functions than he needed to. It's the type of customer service that is lost in today's big business. So upset at this store. I called and ordered and pre paid for a 16-35mm Sony f2.8 lens and was told it was the only one in the store. I drove from Washington went in to pick it up for my Oregon road trip and all the time the staff was telling me what a great lens I bought and sold me a polarizer with the specific lens size. I know it's my fault I didn't check which lens they gave me but he seemed like he knew what he was talking about so confidently but he gave me a f4 lens!!!!!!! And I only realized when I'm here trying to take an astrophotography shot. I checked my receipt and I definitely ordered and paid for the f2.8 so now I have to drive all the way back, missed my Milky Way shot, delayed my trip and I don't even know if they still have the lens or gave it to someone who ordered a f4 one instead. If they seem like they know what they're talking about, they don't!!!! Don't be fooled!! So mad at myself and at them. read more
