Planned on buying a Fujifilm camera and lens combo from this dealer. Advertised price for the last week has been $1799.00, anywhere from $50-100 less than Local shops in Seattle and B&H as well as a camera store south of Portland. Called to check if it was in stock and was told the advertised price was wrong (they discovered it 2 hours prior to me calling) and it would be closer to $1999 or ""maybe" $1950..I wrote on their comment form about the experience and the answer I received was that they "discovered" the price had changed, blamed the tariffs, wouldn't honor the advertised price and even right now (9 hours after initial contact) it is still advertised on their website as $1799. Really does feel like I'm being played for a fool and they're hoping I'll pay anything for it. Too bad; I have bought Cameras, lens, and supplies from them over the years. I originally went in sniffing around for a used camera and boy do they have a selection. In conversation then about my 40 year old Nikon that had been damaged I discovered they do repair work as well. I came back with my camera and felt good about leaving it with them for an estimate. They were able to source parts quicker than I expected and suggested some other age related maintenance it needed and came back with an estimate which I found more than reasonable. As well as a surprising time frame to complete. 2-3 weeks later as promised I got notice it was done. Went in to pick it up and am feeling emotional because my camera which I purchased new in 1985 is once again beautiful! read more

I was attempting to place an order for a camera and was told it had to be completed through your website. I followed the instructions given by your employee, but the order would not go through. Instead of offering helpful guidance, the young man I spoke with became impatient, used inappropriate language, and spoke to me in a way that was both disrespectful and insulting--implying that I was incapable and suggesting I find someone else to help me. To make matters worse, I later discovered that the issue was not user error at all, but rather a limitation in your system--it appears you cannot bill an order to one state while shipping it to another. That is something your staff should be aware of and able to communicate clearly and professionally. Experiences like this are exactly why customers hesitate to support local, small businesses. Courtesy, patience, and basic respect go a long way, and unfortunately, none of those were demonstrated in this interaction. This place is great! I went in with an older Lumix camera, inquiring about replacing the internal battery. Jaden, the young man who helped me, said it was a capacitor, not a battery, that was faulty. He said given the age of the camera, it probably wasn't worth fixing just to change the clock every time. He showed me how to override that function each time. Then he went above and beyond by helping me factory reset the camera so that the zoom function worked across all settings. He probably spent close to 30 minutes with me, and even recommended a better bridge camera when I'm ready to upgrade. His level of knowledge and professionalism was incredible. Gave them the Leica M3 I have owned 52 years for some simple topside work, but the technician lost a part and I had to wait for it to be ordered and the camera reassembled. The repair, far short of a CLA, was $380. I was told that the exorbitant price was "because it is a Leica. The Leica afficionados have really bid prices up." I am NOT one who has bought one of Leica's new-standard "camera/jewel of the moment" toys. My M3 and I have survived real, awful situations together. It has a spot in the rangefinder that is probably a bit of fungus from our years in Asia together, but for $380, that was apparently not worth cleaning. This inane willingness to apparently pay any price, real value bedamned, for a red-dot piece of fanboy costume jewelry is beyond silly. No truly professional camera shop should be part of it, in my humble, aged, but deeply experienced opinion. read more

I dropped off a digital camera with them to see if they can tell me why it was making such a horrible gear grinding noise. They diagnosed it within 25 seconds of me handing them the camera. It turned out to be the gears inside the lens. So, they let me know they would look into the costs of the replacement parts and share that with me as soon as they got that accomplished. 5 days later they told me the costs to repair the lens and what a replacement of comparable ability would be. Their repair pricing is a good deal compared to replacing the lens with a new or a used one. I appreciate the integrity and honesty that this place of business displays. I spoke with Nate this afternoon, and he was awesome! I came into the conversation thinking about an $1,200 camera, and a $1,300 camera, for a very niche purpose. I was thinking used, and in no hurry... as in I have time to wait for the right camera model to come along. Another shop has one of the models I'm thinking about used for $800. Nate was incredibly patient with me, and honest. He pointed out some particular needs I have, and had mentioned myself. Then brought up a 3rd more reasonably priced camera. After getting off the phone with Nate, I looked into Nate's recommendation. Seems like a great fit he's come up with for me. I spoke with a second Camara Solutions employee over the phone today named Will. Will likes Nate's recommendation, and has another camera model he thinks I should look at as well. I am going to drop by the shop likely today to look at both models, and greatly appreciate all the input, thought, and time both employees from Camera Solutions have put into helping me. I absolutely will end up buying a camera from Camera Solutions rather than a big box store. I love to support local, and these guys go way over and above typical customer service with knowledge and help making sure the potential buyer ends up with what they truly need it... I went to Best Buy to see what was wrong with my camera. It's a 3 year old Canon and it stopped working randomly and I was upset because it's a $600 camera. Obviously there's MUCH more expensive cameras out there but this camera is my favorite. Anyways when I went to Best Buy and had the "Geek Squad" guy check it out he was at a loss. He didn't ask for second opinions. just flats out tells me that something catastrophic has happened to the motherboard in my camera and it'd be a good idea to just get a brand new camera. Obviously I was upset at hearing this because it seemed like he didn't even try to see what was wrong with it. He just looked it over, looked up how to reset my settings on his phone randomly hoping it'd start working magically. When he saw it didn't work he basically gave up and said "yeah I have no idea". I was nervous about going to a repair shop because I was thinking I'd be paying so much to have my camera repaired but I went anyways. Embarrassingly it was just my SD card that was acting up. Not only was the employer really nice about it though and never made me feel like an idiot for not knowing this, he explained everything to me. Makes you wonder what credentials you need to work at Geek Squad if the guy didn't know himself. I feel like they just help non tech savvy people turn on their phones and what not. I really like Camera Solutions. They had no problem repairing my 35mm Canon. It did take a while but I appreciated the updates they provided. Photography is almost entirely digital these days and I am a old school C-41 girl. They certainly stock digital but have a few special treats for us 35mm lovers. Plenty of bodies and lenses for new and older models. Prices are competitive. I second Camera Solutions only to Blue Moon on the East Side for my camera needs. Blue Moon still processes C-41 and E6 on site. If you're solely digital, Camera Solutions is a great bet. read more

Super shady repair practices! Brought a camera in for a repair estimate. After receiving the estimate I opted against having the repair done. Not a big deal, the cost just didn't make sense vs. the value of the camera. When I went to pick my camera up, the tech who did the estimate wasn't in and they were unable to locate the faulty part to return it to me with my camera. Aggravating, but again, not a huge deal. There was some initial confusion amongst the staff as my camera was bundled in a box with another similar camera. I was told this camera was to be the donor camera for the part that needed to be replaced on mine. The issue is that nowhere on the repair estimate I was given does it make mention of their intention to use refurbished/used parts in my repair. The itemized cost breakdown of the estimate lists what I've found to be the typical retail price of a new, OEM part. I mentioned this the following day when they called to tell me they had located my missing part and was given a vague apology. When I asked about their quoted repair costs (the quote they gave me had the labor cost listed as 6.5X the parts, thus the refusal to have the workdone) it was explained to me that it was a delicate procedure and removing the part from the old camera and installing it in mine was the reason for the high price. So if you're following along: their intention was, without consulting me, to charge me 2-3 times the cost in labor to remove a used part from an old camera, rather than ordering a new replacement part, as well as charging me new/retail price for the part itself. That is ridiculous. Disingenuous at best, if not straight up deceitful and predatory. I recommend you take your business literally anywhere else. read more

My Canon 5D needed its sensor cleaned, and there aren't many places in Portland to get that done. Pro Photo Supply recommended I go here, so I did. Upon entering the store, I was greeted with many signs behind the equipment for sale that read, "If you plan to buy *online*, don't waste our *time*." I suppose that is supposed to be a clever rhyme. Not to mention that "online" and "time" don't actually rhyme -- but my reaction was, "Maybe the reason I go to online storefronts is that they don't antagonize their potential customers." So I walked up to the counter and said I needed a sensor cleaning. The fifteen-year-old behind the counter told me it would be $65. I asked, "Can you tell me about the process you use to clean the sensor?" He was confused by this question so spun around and asked the woman in charge. She replied, "We don't tell you how to clean the sensor. That is a service we charge money for." This frustrated me even more than the rude signs. All I was asking for was a description of what I was paying $65 for, but she assumed I was trying to learn how to clean a sensor for free. Once I corrected her that I just wanted to know what I was paying for, she gave me some marketing mumbo-jumbo about how cleaning a sensor is veeeery complex and complicated and should not be approached by amateurs. Basically, her answer to my question was designed to scare me into paying them rather than trying it myself. So, in fairness, they did clean my sensor, and from what I can tell did a good job of it. But the whole experience left me feeling unsatisfied as a customer. Next time I need a sensor cleaned, I will seek out other local options. read more

Sending it to the Canon Factory Repair in Illinois is free) 3) It takes about 3 weeks to get cameras fixed (took me 2 business days at Associated Camera Repair, Canon Factory Repair in Illinois is 7-10 days) 4) Camera Solutions estimated cost to fix my camera was more than Canon Factory Repair in Illinois and much more than Associated Camera Repair. Support local business, get your camera back much sooner and pay less to have your camera fixed by going to ASSOCIATED CAMERA REPAIR. Or, you can ship your camera to the company's factory repair and get it fixed faster and cheaper. read more

I took my Canon PowerShot SX10IS into Camera Solutions for repair because I kept getting a lens error message. I left it there and was told that I'd get an email with an estimate within about a week. I was pleased that they were on time, and gave them the go-ahead to fix my camera. I was told it'd be about 10 days or so, and was again pleased that that's just what it took. I picked it up today, and cleaned and fix. The problem was the optical circuit board, and the repair is under warranty for 90 days. That's fair. I've had this camera for 7 years and absolutely adore it. I appreciated the fact that the lady at the counter told me there's no sense getting a new camera if I love the one I have; she didn't try to sell me a new camera. Major points. The technician who waited on me today was very pleasant; he had on a Hawaii t-shirt, which I loved, and we talked about our love of Japanese food while he finished up the transaction. He was the one who fixed my camera, and I really liked the personal contact. I'm really pleased with all aspects of getting my camera fixed, and I know that this is where I'll go if I need more repairs or more camera equipment. It's a long drive for me, but definitely worth it. read more

Camera Solutions, in many ways, blew me away. I generally have stayed away from the Portland, OR camera stores for reasons ranging from insane markups and unprofessional car salesman like staff, to poor selection of professional level supplies. Camera Solutions definitely did not fall into this category. I actually stopped by simply to meet up with a friend and help her select some lenses, and get a lens cap to replace one that I had lost earlier that day. While there the salesman who assisted me not only did so while politely demonstrating his exhaustive knowledge of the equipment, but also took the time needed to get to know my needs as a photographer, and my friends needs as a photo enthusiast, simultaneously. His recommends were concise, to the point, respectful, and not based on the cost of the equipment. He was even kind enough to provide me with information regarding repair services and CLA services for my 35mm film camera collection. The most surprising result of this recommendation was to learn that their location provides full service, using OEM parts, for the cameras I own which range from the more common Canonet's all the way to vintage Leica SLR's and rangefinders. To top it off the pricing was very reasonable as well! Will I go back? Hell yeah I will! I love their service, selection is limited due to space but of good quality, and pricing is more than reasonable! read more

I after many years of needing to get my camera video fixed from clicking during the recording, I finally did it and took it to the only place in town that I could find. The man really made me feel bad about the camera that I was bringing in. Canon SX10 IS. I love my camera! He actually made several comments during the transaction that anything else I would buy would be better than what I had with a hand toss toward my camera (I never asked him!) I guess it just didn't instill a lot of confidence that they are going to take good care of it. Additionally strange behavior from the employee was I bought a cord to attach my lens cap to my camera he went ahead and opened up and put it on without asking me if I wanted him to do that. I had a broken mount on one of my lenses and went here to see what it would take to fix it. The guy there was really nice. He took the lens to the back and upon coming back out front said $55. Unfortunately, money is tight for me right now so I asked if I could just get the part and if he thought I could replace it myself fairly easily. The part was $18 and he said that I should be able to do it myself. He did remind me that if they worked on it they would be able to identify anything else that may have broken inside so I wouldn't be frustrated if my repairs didn't get it all. I was very tempted to have them do the repair but overall cost dictated just buying the part. I was a little disappointed that their lead time is 1-2 weeks which also played a part in my decision. As a side note, what impressed me the most was upon leaving, my 8 year old son started asking questions. He asked the lady that works there if they had any books. She stopped what she was working on and answered him, yes. My son said, I was hoping to find a book to read about photography while my dad is at work so I can learn more and also so I can use it for my reading time everyday. As she was walking around the end of the counter to show my son their selection of books she asked, what kinds of things do you like taking pictures of. My son answered, outside stuff like birds and sunsets. She took him over and showed him two different books that looked like they would be a perfect fit for him. Cool, he said. Um, how much are they? She walked back behind the counter and as she scanned each one and set it on the counter she told him the prices. What was cool about this is that she dedicated her attention to my son and not me. She treated an 8 year old with the same respect that any customer would expect. While our purchases there today were not large, I am expecting to shop there in the future and will definitely recommend them to others. read more

I went into Camera Solutions the other day to look at my options for a new lens fr my Nikon camera. I spoke to not only a sales clerk who was well versed in "camera speak" but also the store owner and repair technition himself. Each employee had plenty to say as far as imput to find the perfect lens to fit my needs as a portrait photographer. I was able to try out lenses, and find out every bit of detail I would possibly need to know about each lens. Every question I asked was answered with an extensive explanation. Even though I wasn't planning on purcahsing a lens that very day, but to go home and do more research, I felt as if the empolyees had done my research for me! I felt very comfortable purchasing a new lens based on their recommendations. One of the empolyees had studied photography, and understood exactly wat I needed. I am so happy with my purchase, and feel so comfortable with Camera Solutions to also clean my lenses as well. When I have an upcoming shoot where I might want to use lighting equipment, or higher quality lenses out of the ordinary, I visit the shop for a detailed explanation of what to rent, and then I am able to do so right there at a very reasonable price! I am able to take on bigger jobs, and do so succesfully, without cutting into my profit so considerably with the purchase of all new eqipment. Instead, I just rent from CS! This place is top notch, really good customer service, and they go above and beyond to help get things fixed within your budget, their rental equipment is far more accessible then prophoto supply. Don't listen to the few complainers on their review page, look at most who are complaining, they are dealing with broken or outdated equipment that is fairly difficult to find parts for these days and or their equipment isn't working and they take it into these guys looking to get it fixed for practically nothing and then claiming other things are broke after they receive their equipment back trying to be scam artist. I been shooting for 30 years and these guys at camera solutions are number 1 at customer service, the only con is they have 1-2 new front desk people quite often because honestly it's hard to keep long term good employees and usually the new guy at the front desk has less experience and not very knowledgeable to answer in depth questions, but the manager and the owner there are first class. read more

I get my cameras cleaned once a year, and I always bring them to Camera solutions. Most recently they also updated my firm wear and give a shutter count for both bodies. For two digital SLRs the cleaning, shutter count, and firmware upgrade was over $200. I am happy to pay to have my cameras cared for by an expert. Their turn around time was one day. I'm unable to afford expensive equipment for my camera, but love the ability to try out new lenses. They have the option of renting a whole new set as well. Obviously, you'll need to put down a deposit, but it's just a hold - not a charge on your card. The service is attentive, the owner is a kind gentleman. The place is in a good area, but I HATE having to rush myself there to return my equipment after work. I do like the fact the weekend is considered 1 day when renting on Friday to Monday. Went in to look at a couple lenses that I am considering buying. I called a few stores ahead of time and discovered that Camera Solutions had both in stock, unlike most of the few remaining camera stores stores on the west side of town. The service was excellent. They let me try them out with my camera body, and answered my questions without making me feel like an idiot, or trying to pressure me in any way. Pricing on the lenses was equivalent to what I've seen online, give or take a little, and the pricing on the filters was as good or better. I was considering purchasing online, but as I just discovered, the number of camera shops has been dwindling (most likely due to online sales). It is getting more and more difficult to find a good camera shop to have cleanings and repairs done. Also, being able to try out new equipment is critical IMO when purchasing such expensive and delicate equipment...and you just can't get that online. If anything is wrong with the equipment and it needs to be returned, I'd MUCH rather have a local shop to support my return or exchange than have to hassle with RMA-ing, re-boxing and shipping back. Even if it's not as convenient as ordering online has become, it is important to invest in the local shops that provide good service so they stick around and return the favor by supporting us. I was definitely impressed with the service, and plan on making my next purchase here instead of online. read more

This summer I wanted to check out Oregon International Air-show in Hillsboro and since I had my stock 18-55mm lens on my Canon, I thought that if it didn't cost too much I should rent a "better" lens. I came across Camera Solutions when I Googled camera lenses for rent in Portland, OR. There, I was able to rent a really nice zoom lens for about $30 -35. I picked up the lens on Friday and had to return it on Monday (since they are closed on Sundays). Thats almost 4 days of shooting!! To say the least, pictures from the air show turned out better than I anticipated. Thank you Camera Solutions!!
