Super friendly service, great collection of kitchen and home decor items, wine, very come-in-and-we'll-treat-you-well kinda vibe. The first time I picked up some Swedish sponges, at just under $7.00 ea for most of them (depending on sizing), that's approximately $3.00 in savings from the grocery store in Toronto. Points for Ellena's. Not a top, top fan of these sponges though. This first visit also allowed me to purchase a berry pie (not Saskatoon, similar to blueberry however I can't recall the name). This pie was delicious. I knew I had to return to pick up the Chicken Pesto sandwich that was calling my name, yet I needed to leave behind due to my bank card not working. So return I did, and that chicken pesto, was so scrumptious. Would likely have been more enjoyable had I eaten it when it was warm, yet I wasn't all that hungry when I arrived and ended up eating it about 2 hours later. The person who brought it out to me was lovely, he hand delivered it and said, "enjoy". I was waiting in the store. It was such a nice thing for him to do. Above and beyond! I picked up 3 more pies: pecan, blueberry and raspberry. I am obsessed with raspberries, seriously so tasty. This pie is up my alley, the filling is rather generous and the crust is an ideal pairing. It was light in colour, which gave me the pondering of how cooked it was, yet there weren't any raw dough bits. In fact, it was pretty good. The pecan pie is, well, gone. It was also really very good. I tried to make pecan pie once, it didn't have the same flavour most pecan pie has when its made by others. There is a reason Ellena's pecan pie did not last long with me. The blueberry pie, has yet to be tried. This crust also looks on the lighter side. The pastry I picked up was the Pain Au Chocolat. They looked too good sitting next to the cash out. I was definitely buying with my eyes that day and that croissant was flakey, buttery, that strip of chocolate down the centre, rich, delicious, memorable. Very, easy to devour. If I were a glutton, baked goods and treats is definitely the way I would go. I was tempted to get more, the excitment of trying a new place out when I'm in the area infrequently, was present, yet I held back. Needed to spread the money & love to other local shops. :) 100% a spot to hit up when you are in the lil' township.

Today I treated myself to their beef barley soup and found it to be rich and satisfying. For dessert I had a slice of excellent carrot cake with a cream cheese frosting. So yummy! Sweet enough, but not cloying. And it's carrot cake - carrots are veggies! I felt quite virtuous while I scarfed it down.

But they also have nearly peerless homemade pastas (of which the smoked paprika linguine is my favourite, though they often only make it by request), spectacular prepared sauces, and regular specials on essentials that will get you things like premium olive oil or balsamic vinegar* at supermarket prices. * Genova is one of the few places I've regularly found a variety of pure, aged balsamic vinegar free from sulphites. AWESOME. So, here's some tips: 1) They ONLY TAKE CASH, no exceptions. I once witnessed a woman curse them out for this fact and declare she'd tell all her friends not to shop there; when she left, everyone in the tiny shop, myself included, burst out laughing, and one of the guys declared "we can barely keep up with the customers we have, we don't need her!". Very jovial, and they took her bitch-fest so perfectly in-stride they could give lessons on how to turn the other cheek. 2) If you need a quick lunch, pick up a focaccia sandwich -- they're about $4 if memory serves, with salami, lettuce, tomato, and mustard, and they're fantastic! If you want to suddenly realize you're hungry, walk down Wellington around 11:00am for the wafting glory of baking focaccia and just try to resist the pull. 3) When ordering pasta instead of ordering by weight, order by serving size. Say things like "I'm having a dinner party for six, four big eaters and two regular", and they'll give you an incredibly accurate amount of what you need, plus a little extra (because people WILL want seconds, believe me!). 4) Their homemade calabrese olives are out of this world good. They use a puree of oil-marinated chilis, oregano, fennel (I think), and oil, and very, very good sun cured olives... and damn, these things are so good I eat them until I hurt. 5) Ask what's on special, or if they have any leftovers. I've scored half servings of pasta, day old (but still delicious) focaccia, and nearly expired but still awesome cheese for cheap. Finally, I'll also mention that the staff here are fabulous -- very nice people who greet with a smile, always bid a good day, and work diligently to help provide you with exactly what you need to hit a homerun with whatever it is you're cooking. I haven't had the chance to dine in the cafe yet, mostly because it gets extremely busy, especially on weekends. That said, the bakery/store has so many great finds. Their bread is excellent quality and a great value for the size, at around $5 for a small loaf and $8 for a larger one. My favorite is the olive rosemary sourdough, which is absolutely delicious. The saucisson sec is another great local find. The baked goods offer a nice rotating variety, with everything from Québec maple chômeurs to Italian maritozzi. On my last visit, I tried the Vietnamese coffee panna cotta, which was excellent. There's also an large gluten-free selection, ranging from breads to fresh-baked goods. The gluten-free scones are a particular standout. Beyond the food, Pan Chancho also has a great selection of kitchen and pantry-related items, including spices, pasta, sauces, hand towels, reusable bags, and more. It's the kind of place where you can go in for a loaf of bread and easily leave with a whole bag of interesting little things. Definitely worth stopping by if you're in downtown Kingston! The bakery alone is reason enough to visit, even if you don't get a chance to sit down at the cafe.
