4 stars on pizza! Ordered the large MEAT LOVERS PAN PIZZA. A true pan- not deep dish and not thin crust. The crust was perfect! Mouth watering golden crispy on the outside and soft bready chewy on the inside. Evenly hand rolled edges and lightly salted. The pizza was adequately topped with meet and cheese. The tomato sauce was sparse as most of the tomato taste came from chunky stewed tomatoes on each piece. The person next to me at the bar ordered a personal pan and it looked like it was all crust with little toppings so I ordered the large and decided to take the rest home. It says on the menu that a 14" serves 3-4 people. Not a chance... with an above average appetite, me and a good beer drinking buddy could polish the large off with no problem! There was a wide variety of offerings on the menu. The bartender said we're known for our pizza so I went with that. Some of the items made me wonder if they proudly create it or simply offer it so theu can sell it. Woodsy warm cozy atmosphere with charm indoors. I was comfortable hanging out here. Approachable and unpretentious. I'll be coming back to this unique find. Next time, I'm interested in trying their award winning chili and maybe the huge loaded baked potato (it better be darn good for 10 bucks!) Overall, the menu is reasonably priced but you have to know what you're getting. Pizza has the best cost per person. Sandwiches at 10, entrees, pasta, and ribs are 12 -20 bucks. 8 beer taps of mostly domestics, There is a more then adequately stocked bar and wine list. read more

Stopped at The Silo on my way back to the city last week. Oh man, it was just as good as I remember. I couldn't stop eating the sidewalk fries with ranch. I thought I wasn't going to have room for pizza, but we were alright. Absolutely delicious tomatoes on top of the pizza. Parmesan and crushed red pepper to top it off. Thought that a trip to the Silo would be an appropriate reward after clearing the fallen tree's that I had climbed as a child at my parents from the snow a few weeks back. Right call for sure. It has been decades since I last walked through the familiar door that greeted me so many times as a child when walking up. Potato skins and their signature pizza were great, lighting was a little brighter than I remember (but that could just be the rose coloured glasses of childhood memories), quick and friendly service made for a happy return. What a sad day at this great establishment. From the moment I got there to the moment I left I was dissatisfied with the service and food. I arrived on 10/20 around 2pm. When I arrived I saw 3 employees (2 heavy set Latina women and 1 Hispanic male). Right away I was not greeted with a "hello" or "Thanks for coming in". At that point I felt like this place is losing its personal touch to its customers. Jokingly I said to the hostess table for 2 please(since I was on a date), I'm on a date for sweetest day, attempting to get a laughter since they employees looked so miserable to be there and said "wow you guys need coffee" and was still ignored. As I was directed to my table my waiter, Brian came by and was polite but his hygiene was not professional as I noticed warts on his hands and a peculiar smell coming from him (no big deal). As I ordered my food, my burger (the big bull) had no flavor so I took it home as I don't like to waste food. I asked Brian for napkins and he never came back to drop off my napkins but I noticed him hanging out in the kitchen. Not once did he come by to check on my food or my dates food and he didn't offer refills until I had to call him over. Also, as I was getting ready to pay the pen didn't work and my date called over one of the heavy set employees but she ignored my date smh. Silo's I hope you invest into your training program for your employees and the concept of customer service as that will make you a key gem in Lake County. The parking lot is always packed, which deterred us from trying it initially, finally stirred up the courage and actually had no problem parking. Now I understand what all the fuss is about, fun family restaurant train set running around the ceiling, you can advertise on the train :) and a huge tasty menu. Magicians on Sunday, haha! Next time I need to try their pizzas, they looked good. I opted for the Philly steak sandwich, SUPER yummy, but not at all healthy they use a lot of butter, which was tasty, but put a dent in my diet. I have no will power, so my fault. I love you Silo, oh yes, I do...I love you Silo, and will miss you... You see, it's not that I can't go any longer, but I won't be quite so close and it will be a haul up there. However, I'm sure I can squeeze in a few more visits. Anyway, the Silo is my old favorite. You see, this is the spot where we used to have work lunches, dinners, happy hours. As interns, we visited there for a 'fancy' dinner (vs the food court at the mall) and sat for hours, munching on their delicious pizza. My mentor would take me here for lunch for our regular meetings, or when I needed a pick-me-up. There's nothing better than a fresh from the oven, deep dish pizza from Silo. I'm a purist...I like deep dish CHEESE please...but I'll also eat other toppings when my family or friends insist. The large is the best size...because those leftovers, when put in the oven for a few minutes are divine as well. Don't forget some ranch or blue cheese to dip in (thanks to my sister for getting me in to this horrible habit...). The atmosphere is definitely an old barn with plastic picnic tableclothes, but walking in, I just feel a sense of calm. This place makes me happy - and I can't describe it. Some of the servers are great, some cranky (I think my dad gets pleasure from getting the cranky ones to smile...). Their salads are homey and wonderful (extra homemade dressing please!). Wine/Beer - all priced well (and generously poured). I can't say enough about this spot - but visit and you won't be disappointed. Hopefully you, too, can feel calm here in the bustling, loud, Silo! This is my favorite reasonably priced restaurant in the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff area! Thin crust pizza is very good. Nice tasty crust and sauce is slightly sweet. Try the onion rings. House salad is one of my favorites Last 2 times we were in the area we took home their half-baked pizzas and finished cooking them at home. GREAT option! read more

Best Pizza in the North Shore. Possibly all of Chicago. The pizza that I've enjoyed over the years at the Silo is some of the best deep-dish pizza I've ever consumed. I have fond memories of going on dates here with my high school sweetheart. It always came out thick fresh and steamy, and never disappointed. It's pretty much a given that you'll be taking home leftovers. The atmosphere is great, too. It feels like a hollowed out barn, with an upstairs dining section in the rafters. The wait staff is friendly, and the service is quick, as far as deepdish pizza is concerned. This is the first restaurant I visited after spending 8 weeks in Navy bootcamp in Great Lakes, IL. Recommended by one of my RDCs, I made it a point to bring my family here to try my very first "Chicago style" pizza. I knew pizzas in the Chicago area were famous and well regarded by countless food publications, but I didn't realize how unique they really were until I finally saw them here. Shaped like a bowl with the clear advantage of topping retention. . . I just thought, this is GENIUS. Here I ordered the Grilled Garlic Chicken deep-dish pizza since I was in the mood for something salty and garlicky. Plus, every pizza ever served at bootcamp was either cheese or peperoni, so I wanted to steer clear of anything so basic. But what I got wasn't exactly what I expected. . . The description of the Grilled Garlic Chicken pizza, per their menu both on site and online goes as follows: "An Enticing Blend of Fresh Spinach, Roasted Red Peppers & Sliced Red Onions with Garlic Roasted Chicken." They make no mention of marinara sauce, but there was so much that my pizza ended up both looking and tasting a lot like a Margherita Pizza. Meanwhile, my deprived taste buds were still yearning for something more focused on the chicken and garlic part. I thought it was a mistake so I asked the waiter, but apparently it was what I had ordered (I also posted a picture of it on Yelp for reference). The name given to the dish was misleading, but still, it was a leap away in quality and flavor from bootcamp pizza, and I loved every bite I could manage to stomach (I got excited and filled up on the antipasto a liiiitle too much). The roasted red peppers were sweet and juicy and a perfect compliment to the pizza dough as much as you would expect tomatoes would be. It gives me ideas for home cooking whenever I might want to substitute tomatoes with something a little more crunchy when cooked. And oh, the cheese. . . There are 18 specialty pizzas ranging from Buffalo Chicken to Seafood, and even one that's called Taco for those of you who can't decide what to order at the Pizza Hut/Taco Bell hybrid restaurants (see menu here: http://www.silopizza.com/html/pizza.html). That's a lot of pizzas that I won't be able to try anytime soon since I now live in Virginia, but if I was in the neighborhood, I would so have loved to come here every weekend to conquer them all. With the option to buy them half-baked to finish at home, trying them all is made that much more easier, and because of that option, you know they want to give you the freshest dining experience possible. It just makes you think they really believe in their product that much. I want you so bad, Silo! Ugh. . . That's what happens when you review on an empty stomach. Did I mention the restaurant has train tracks hanging from the ceiling? I wondered if the owner is a railroad enthusiast. Good food but really poor service. The individuals at the front desk really struggle to determine how to perform their job. Waited 20 minutes after submitting my name for a pick up and then waited for the host to seat 5 different tables, clear checks for 2 services then come back and ask my name again. Finally the pizza comes with other pizzas for individuals who came in after me. I waited another period of time to check out other customers then they couldn't determine how to clear my order after it was paid on line. I'd just like to make everyone aware that the owners of this restaurant don't care about their customers. We've had numerous situations where they've gotten our order wrong and each time proven they don't care. The final straw was our last visit, which of course our order was wrong. Their solution to the problem was the owner suggesting my boyfriend go in the back and speak to the cook himself. The owner walked my boyfriend back to the kitchen to talk to the cook. The owner Dave then proceeded to physically push my boyfriend out the door. Then I went in to confront him and he called me a fu*%ing bi@*h and told me to get the F out. I love silo. I've been here multiple times. We drive about 45 minutes to get here. My family and I went for my 24th birthday and it was probably the best birthday dinner I've had. We got a deep dish cheese pizza and a thin mushroom/onion pizza and the four of us almost finished it. We usually just get the pizza because we know it's so good. Had a couple beers in tall glasses, too. Best part was when my waitress and about 4 other waiters sang happy birthday to me and clapped their metal pizza servers for effect. I was so happy and slightly embarrassed, but in a good way. They even played happy birthday on the speakers. The free brownie with ice cream they gave for us to share was so good too. I came here on a Sunday evening with my family and we had a nice time here. We started with their homemade chips which may be different than the fries option so next time I should get both options as who doesn't like any version of potatoes in some unique dipping sauces. We also got the onion rings as a starter and they were very tasty. Then we got the grilled shrimp salad which I thought was okay, not sure if I would get it again. Now the pizzas, what the Silo is known for. We went with their version of Hawaiian which had ham, pineapple and some jalapeños and it definitely had a kick which is great during the winter time when you need some extra heat. Then we got another vegetarian pizza which was also very tasty but wasn't as unique as the other one. Overall, everyone liked the food here. It was tasty and different than the other places. How can I forget to talk about the atmosphere which is the whole reason we went here-for our kids. Loved the barn like setting, yet it was definitely spacious. My kids loved the train that goes by so that was really nice to look at as it made its run. We also got to meet the balloon guy who apparently is only there on Sunday evenings, so we caught him right in time and he was super nice and made the girls some pretty balloons that actually made it home with us and through the car ride. Been here twice. My husband grew up in the North part of Chicago, so this place is nostalgic for him. The pizza is super tasty! We also like the ribs, but the pizza is where it's at. They also have a good Caesar salad too. The place is decorated cute too. There is a train that runs along the ceiling in the pub area. The restroom floors are decorated with a ton of pennies! A well established and loved pizza restaurant for many reasons. Their pan pizza is something unique and the restaurant and it's history provide an interesting backdrop. Growing up in Chicago and being exposed to many different pizza joints from tiny mom and pops to chains, to the deep dish powerhouses, to pizzas on the West Coast and down South... the Silo was good, but it's really bread-y- which goes along with pan pizza. Don't get me wrong, their pizza is done well and they use excellent ingredients, but it just wasn't my thing. On Fri/Sat night their carryout business is slammed and on more then one occasion I was "lost" in the mix of overly anxious people waiting for their carryout order. (Think of the last time you tried to board an airplane.) Also, they have a bit of a niche, so their prices are higher than a lot of other comparable pizza joints in the area, which I get, but at the same time, I will take my money elsewhere. It's worth checking out at least once, I encourage you to give it a go and then make your own call. read more

The Silo is a family-style pizza institution in Lake Bluff. I've been here a number of times over the years, and it doesn't completely disappoint. The interior is a rehabbed farmhouse with a cute train running over the middle dining area and other train paraphernalia lining the walls. There is no dearth of little ones scrambling around the premises. Because of this, I'd liken the place to a bourgeois Shakey's. Our service was great this last time, with a chummy server who had a great sense of humor. They have an okay selection of draft beers with three sizes, a small, pint, or a large frosted 32oz. mug. We tried the fried artichoke appetizer and these weren't so memorable: they were basically pickled artichoke hearts stuffed with cream cheese similar to a jalapeno popper and fried. The vinegar from the pickling interfered with the taste. Pizzas come in two types, a thin crust or a pan pizza. I prefer the thin crust-- these are classic pizzas served with a lot of nicely browned cheese. We also tried a house specialty seafood pizza in a pan style. The pizza toppings were quite tasty with the white clam sauce, shrimp, fish, and crab. The pan style was too bready for my taste, however. Our server warned us that there was a roving magician who might visit our table, and unfortunately my dining mate really dislikes magicians. This "magician" was really a balloon artist more geared towards children. I think he got the message and never visited. Just as well, the only balloon animal I like is a snake, because they scare away children. read more

This is one of my favorite pizza places around. Love their deep dish! The restaurant itself is an old barn shaped building and has plenty of charm. Lots of outdoor seating which I prefer if not bellying up to the tiny little bar. The menu offers a large variety of food options other than pizza too which often time spells trouble but they do a nice job with lots of food options. I went here with my family about a week ago and boy do I have a lot to say... from all the reviews I've read, I thought this place would be great. We order our appetizers and the wings we ordered were dry and the sauce was just not it. Not to worry however, we have some pizza coming in. We get our pizza, each costing about $20 each and it was just an underwhelming experience. It was soggy, sloppy, tasteless, overpriced and a threat to society. Went to The Silo about a month ago while I was in the area on business. The Silo has really good pizza! We went there twice for the week and ordered the deep dish pizza both times. The pizza is topped pretty generously with cheese and toppings. The marinara sauce is excellent! The pizza isn't overloaded with sauce as well. Both times, the waitresses were great. Been coming here since I was a youngster, about 40 years. Always loved the pizza so much I don't recall having anything else off the menu other than the legendary sidewalk fries. The patina'd pizza pans are awesome and really give the deep dish the carmelization you want on the crust and cheese. I had the specialty deep dish 9" Country Italia.
