Find the Silo On a holiday visit with family, we make our way to The Silo on a weekday night. This place is busy, a full parking lot, and, a restaurant packed with people. Our large group was seated rather quickly. This place has an inviting vibe that just exudes in anticipation of all of the good stuff coming our way. Our selection that included a Meat Lovers and Country Italia deep dish pizzas were excellent. Served in a deep dish at the table, the pizzas were bubbly hot and full of an aroma that wafted over the table. I heard many good things about this place so my wife and I decided to try it. I made reservations just to be safe. We arrive and we sit down we order our drinks with one being a water and it tasted super metallicy. They told us once we got there that their burgers, sandwiches and pasta wasn't available due to staffing issues in the kitchen only leaving appetizers, pizza and salads. We ordered 5 specialty pizzas which all were delicious. They also took care of us as first responders. Every time we order they always find a way to make us feel very well appreciated. Ordered a personal pizza with mushrooms and chicken. Ended up getting chicken and onions. I informed our waitress that I can't eat onions. She took my pizza and told me she'd get me a new one. About 20 minutes later she gave me a pizza with a ton of red sauce over it. I had to take some off cause it was excessive. As I start eating it I started finding onions. I asked my waitress if they just gave me the same pizza I had earlier and she stated she wasn't in charge of the kitchen, she told them to fix the mix up but they had already turned off the oven. I told her she should have just told me that vice trying to trick me into eating a pizza that she said they had just finished making. There are two things to order at silo: pizza and sidewalk fries. The silo has not changed since however long it has been in existence: Sticky, dark wood chair and tables, stucco walls, wood picture frames and model trains; Call it character. I honestly am not sure how to even rate this place because I hate dining in: the service is average, the food takes forever, and the dominant flavor notes of the house pouring water are sulfur. But the pizza crust is quite unmatched in flavor and I will always recommend trying some if you like pan pizza, also, awesome diversity in specialty style flavors. read more

The Silo treats their customers horribly. After ordering two pizzas for "pick up" we arrived before the order was ready. We then decided to dine inside rather than bringing the food home. Much to my AMAZEMENT we were told that we couldn't do that because the order was placed "to go". We were a party of 4 with elderly parents of 87+84 yrs old. The hostess snarled and said she'd get the manager and ask for "special permission". After our conversation with the manager she allowed us to stay and dine just this one time. She came across as doing us some tremendous favor. Had I been alone I would have simply left without the order never to return. Who needs this? read more

Tonight my family had dinner at The Silo for my grandmother's 89th birthday. Dinners out with our whole family, about 25 people, can be chaotic and stressful. At The Silo they accepted a preorder of food by family. When the food started coming out our server knew which family each item belonged to. When the checks came they were all already separated by family. Everything went so smoothly without any family needing to assist. Thank you Silo staff for such an enjoyable dinner. I grew up in L.B. and came here several times years ago. I went back with my family last night. Our waiter, Joe was great. There were a gaggle of rotten kids running all over the restaurant and going in and out of the door to the patio right near us. Without a skip, Joe brings them in and locks the patio door. He recommended the sidewalk fries, which are amazing! My husband is from Chicago and is VERY picky about pizza. We got a 14" pan with pepperoni and bacon. My husband said that Silo has to have the best pizza in the suburbs! We will definitely be back! Update: We have been back several times since this original post and each time, the food is consistently amazing, the service is always good, and the atmosphere is comfortable. Love this place! Delicious Chicago style pizza with fresh ingredients. There is definitely more on the menu to explore. The entire family can enjoy the cozy ambiance if dinning in is what you prefer. Also, there is outside seating if you decide you don't want to eat inside the establishment. If you decide to order to go, the wait time is very reasonable and worth the wait. This place has delicious food!! Ordered as carry-out and wasn't disappointed. I would recommend the fold-overs - soooo yummy and stuffed full of deliciousness- way better than calzones (or pita sandwiches). Liked the atmosphere inside the place, feels like a hometown restaurant. However, the value of the meals are outrageously overpriced...we got a 9" pizza (basically a personal pizza) which ended up costing $17.99. The pizza was fairly good but did not match the price at all. The service was good to start but it took forever to get our check and a different waiter ended up having to help us. I am putting 2 stars simply because I would feel bad giving them a 1star. 2 salads, Sausage Pasta dish, and 9" pizza for $43 so it's safe to say we will not be returning lol read more

Carry Out Service, not so Good. Our office is located close to the Silo restaurant. It is our busy season right now and our Boss decided to treat us by ordering carryout lunch from the Silo. We had ordered their regular sized pizzas in the past and had not been disappointed. This time we decided to order individually off their menu. OMG! What a mistake! I ordered the hand carved steak sandwich, which is basically like a Philly. The meat was chunks, not thinly slice. The sandwich was drowning in onions and to top it off: NO horseradish sauce. I substituted onion rings for the fries. Well, I got an entire order of fries plus, they charged my Boss extra for the onions rings. The onion rings were pretty inedible; half the batter had oozed off the rings, they were a thick, gloppy, greasy mess! No crunchy, battered rings here. My co-workers were equally disappointed in their entrees. Personal pan pizza, all dough. Coworker tossed the pizza after he ate the toppings. Another coworkers burger was over cooked and dry. She also substituted her fries for the onion rings. Same thing; charged my Boss for her greasy, slimy rings. We tossed both orders of rings. Another coworker ordered the pork cutlet sandwich, umm... she ate half and tossed the rest. My Boss ordered a Caesar salad which was so over dressed and a very small portion. They even gave him 2 extra side dressings, not sure why? A big thank you to our Boss for being generous in ordering us Lunch, but next time NOT The Silo :( read more

I don't get the appeal of this place. 3 visits at random times of the year and there's ALWAYS gnats flying around. The pizza is bland, the greens in the salad are cut using a meat slicer which makes long, stringy lettuce/romaine that hangs from the fork making for a sloppy mess. Service is mediocre at best with one late night, with the place nearly empty, we ordered an appetizer and a pizza. Finished the apps then waited for our server for over 20 minutes ... dropped cash on the table for the apps and walked out. With so many other pizza places upping their game, I've no reason to go back there again. read more

Generally if there's an agricultural reference tied to a north shore one thinks of Farmer Ted from Sixteen Candles. But nestled in the halcyon posh area is curiously a barn with a silo, hence, The Silo. I've eaten here/got carry out 316.5 times. I guess that means I like it. My favorite things on the menu are the sidewalk fries. Deep fried bits of potatoes with skins on cut small all haphazard shapes, sprinkled with Parmesan liberally and homemade ranch dressing on the side. Amazing. They have infinity kinds of pizza, by the way, that are all good but I like the thin crust with spinach souffle topping. Perfect crust and it's good with or without cheese. The grown up grilled cheese sandwich with melted Brie cheese, pepper jelly, on Parmesan crusted bread and the soup side. The grilled cheese is heavenly, I like Brie and the cheese crusted bread and bite from the jelly take it to another level. Those are my faves for now but there's a lot of interesting items offered. The atmosphere is kinda bland but it's very spacious. There's a party room upstairs and a parking lot. Generally you'll see couples and families dining. This is a tricky review to write, because in light of what other Yelpers are saying, I found this place to be only A-OK. Saturday dinner with the kids, I was super excited to visit this place because the North Shore reviews say it is such a great family place...and it is. My overall family experience sharing a dinner together was great! The model trains that run on a ceiling track surrounding the middle of the upstairs and downstairs are super cool and make for a memory alone. As far as the service is concerned, everyone who works here is beyond friendly. The service is quick, and the place was jam packed with a bunch of other families, which added to the overall great atmosphere. Though we had a bit of a wait time, it was less than what they said it would be. This was a relief, because the front waiting area is not the most accommodating (they pack everyone in) and a nightmare for those who hate crowds, like my husband. But we found a place off to the side where we could breathe and wait. While we were waiting, a large plate of onion rings passed by us. I knew we were going to be adding that to our order! Stealing a sneak peek of the menu, I couldn't get over the most interesting pizza specials. Classic Rueben-hello sauerkraut lovers! Chicken and Broccoli Alfredo-need I say more? Vegetarian Souffle-carrots, zucchini, and spinach (Popeye would approve)! The food. Well, I think you don't really come here for the food. It's just OK. We started with the onion rings. They were lightly battered, which I liked at first. The BBQ dipping sauce was really fantastic and the ranch dressing was the kind I like. After the onion rings fell apart quickly, I had hoped they had more batter on them (not like we needed the extra calories). As far as the pizza, we ordered a deep dish pizza with half sausage and half cheese. The sausage reminded me of breakfast sausage. Not what I expected. The pizza was generously covered with meat...no skimping. The cheese side was very basic. But, the most disappointing thing was the crust. It was flavorless. There's a lot of competition for deep dish pizza on the North Shore. My advice would be to go for a thin crust special. Honestly the first time ever that I didn't finish pizza crust. Make sure you order a drink, because it might be hard for some to drink the water...I think it might be well water. The good thing about ordering a drink there is the fact that you get free refills. Reminds me of the good old pizza parlor days when they would leave a pitcher of pop on the table and keep filling it up when empty. All-in-all, the experience was OK, and worth it for a great night out with the family. As far as the pizza, it wasn't my favorite. DISGUSTING!! This place is an overpriced shack with nasty food! I didn't want pizza but bf did, so we tried this place. Preface: I don't like pizza. Yes, you may revoke my Chicagoan badge. Bf ordered the Italian thin crust pizza. I had a piece and it tasted like Dominos- no joke. I MUCH prefer Viccinos pizza! This stuff had rubbery cheese, a sweet sauce and low-quality meat. My meal was the biggest waste of money. I ordered a burger, which tasted just like Wendy's- fried, not grilled. Plus, the fries were burned!!! Only one cheese choice- "American"- tasted like a Kraft single to me. Oh, the drinks: I ordered a chocolate martini because they had a martini list. I'm served the poorest-quality liquor I've had since college in a TINY glass. And bf's beer was warm. In general, this was a COLOSSAL waste of money. The Silo is, surprisingly, a great place to eat American food. It is surprising though because there are many caveats to its dining experience. First, Silo's curbside appeal is lacking: its parking lot looks like a mess of gravel and haphazardly-placed cars and the building is a freakin' barn and silo. I don't want to use the phrase "eye sore," but it's appropriate. Further exacerbating the situation is the restaurant's interior. It looks like a barn. The only really cool thing about the inside is the two-track miniature train encircling the middle of the restaurant. My inner 5-year-old went nuts when I saw the trains. My inner college-business-student went nuts when I saw real advertisements on said trains. The last bad part of the dining experience is the drinking water: it tastes like run-off well water from Russell Brand's latrine. Do yourself a favor and order a beer or soda. But once you get past all of those things, you'll find that the Silo has excellent food. Their pan pizza is top-notch. They actually have a lot of specialty pizzas; all the ones I've tried were excellent. Their ribs are tender, although not incredibly tasty. Their burgers really hit the spot. And from what I've seen, their fold-over sandwiches are humongous. I really enjoy going to the Silo, especially for pizza -- just don't drink their water and have very low expectations of their wait service. read more

I was born and raised in the north shore and I have to say these guys still have the best pan or deep dish pizza in the entire north shore. Ownership has changed hands a couple of times in the last so many years - but the last time I ate there it was the same pizza I grew to love so much. I can't wait to visit my family this summer and stop in for a fresh pizza pie. Better than anything in Lake Forest, Highwood, Fort Sheridan, Highland Park. I was born in New York and raised in Boston, so I know pizza. Before The Silo, my only experience with Chicago Deep Dish was UNO (yuck) ,so I was honestly prejudiced against giving it a go. 'Glad to say my assumption was wrong. Positive: Evereything they make is fresh and in-house. The sauce is simple, but delicious. The crust has a nice flavor and just-right-consistency. They cook it to perfection and they're not cheapo on toppings. My wife and I would get the large Pepperoni and Italian Sausage Pizza, and it's heaven. We can never finish the whole thing, though we try every time. They have some good aps, great burgers, and yummy side choices for those not feeling pizza... but, you go here for the pizza. Negative: It's not cheap, and they have no problem saying that to you, but in all honesty, what they charge is worth what they serve. This is plain to see because it's always busy with alot of repeat and loyal customers. Hosts are friendly, waitstaff varies, but I've always loved the food. 'Been here a half a dozen times and always left more than satisfied. Decor: Wooden farmhouse converted to a family eatery. They have a garden-sized model train running around the ceiling in the main room if you like that sort 'a thing. The Silo is under new ownership. It's not the same. From the minute you walk in the door, it feels like something is missing. You now pay at the table and front register is void of activity. It feels like it's lost it's personality. The food is the same, but the help has turned over. It's hard to put your finger on what is so different. It's just not the same. I hope the new owners make good choices. They really need to hire some personality to work the front desk. This place has so much potential. Hire a someone who can update the look & feel of its rustic charm. I don't want to stop liking this place, but I'm afraid it might be too late. read more
